Machine virtual SQL & vCenter (easy points)

Asked at a meeting today about our plan to upgrade to vSphere (ESX4).  Our biggest hold back is an expired SQL Server that can accommodate the vCenter DB.  We will set up a new SQL 2008 Server, I want to be single VM stand instead of the way we now installed it on the physical server vCenter.

Respect to water them with the possibility of having a host to sleep that running this SQL server computer and the DB vCenter and she would all bring to its knees.  I know there are a lot of documents about vCenter running as a virtual machine, and if a host falls down running it HA is already configured on the host to restart the virtual machine on a different server, and life is good.  I said I was sure that would be the same thing about SQL server than relys vCenter but wasn't sure at 100% to 99% because we never tried it nor have I tested it yet.

So easy points, are valid thoughts, or am I missing something that the SQL database for vCenter is more important and could cause problems down the road if it disconnects?

  • Kyle

Yes, HA will restart the virtual computer, it doesn't care the application inside. Thus, if the ESX host that hosts your vCenter or VCDB goes down, it will be restarted on another host in the cluster.  Yes, manual intervention of the vCenter Server Service may be necessary.

A good way to backup the SQL backup.

One thing to consider, if you have the admission control located on your cluster, you might consider affecting the restart of high priority for vCenter and the VCDB, just so that if there are claims to resources, they will start first.

  • Database SQL vCenter that is running on the virtual machine within vsphere

Hey guys, I was wondering how many of you are running your database remote vcenter on a virtual machine inside your vsphere environment? We always ran the vcenter db on a physical remote outside the vsphere group box, but I am considering the upgrade to sql 2008 R2 and I already have a virtual sql server computer running within vsphere.

Pro/drawbacks to be aware of the db running on a virtual machine?

    Thanks in advance

    Kevin

We rotated our SQL database in a VM for a while now.

Some advantages are for example the wide use of HA and the ability to easily extend if necessary resources. In addition, if you use backup as Veeam software a restore takes only a few minutes from a physical configuration.

There are a few things when you have to keep in mind:

-Make sure that your SQL VM database begins before your vCenter (the service does not start if it cannot reach the database), even if it can be fixed manually it might be something you want to keep in mind

-If you use the distributed switches power risk since data is stored in the database, of course there are solutions for this (keep the traffic on a standard switch management)

-If you use HA make sure you modify the priority of restarting HA for the virtual machine (you don't want a reboot suddenly)

  • In the virtual machine running to vCenter

    Hi all

We plan to install vcenter in a virtual machine. It will be connected to a SQL Server that will also be a virtual machine.

Everything is looking for attractive about this config but we have some questions about VUM and other patches and upgrade which will take place.

    My question are as follows:

-If the vCenter and AUVs are virtual, what will happen during a deployment of patches for these servers?

-Si SQL is also virtual, what will happen during the correction of the virtual server?

Thanks in advance for any suggestion or answer

    Michel

Uh, excuse me, but I can't quite follow your 2 questions.

Execution of vCenter with VUM in a virtual machine is a fully supported configuration where you can enjoy features such as HA for increased availability, instant etc..

I'm running a vCenter virtual with VUM and other optional packages of a virtual machine, 8 host management and 130 machines virtual too without any problems.

This guide is for vCenter 2.x, apply but to 4.x for the most part too: http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi3_vc_in_vm.pdf

  • go esxi hosts and virtual machines in one vCenter to another

I built a new vCenter (Windows vCenter), I intend to move on ESXi hosts the old vCenter (Virtual appliance vCenter) to the new vCenter. I don't know if it's feasible, please notify my step is correct or not: 1) build a new vcenter 2) create a cluster with two esxi hosts first 3) Mount data (NetApp Filer Storage) to the new vCenter warehouses 4) add an empty host for the new vCenter VMs) 5 download then upload to the host in new vcenter

    Hi friend

    Its doable without any problem.

    Please follow the procedure below.

1 build a new vCenter (your first step is correct)

2 creating a cluster (because it is new vCenter there will not be any available host.) That is why cluster creation wizard will not get to add in the new cluster host). While initially empty cluster would be created.

    3. once the cluster is created, immediately do a right-click on the cluster and add your hosts one by one. Not necessary to cancel the registration and the VM. Virtual machines will automatically be added who were there on the data store available with all guests.

    Don't forget,

    1. we do not mount any store data in vCenter, we assemble the data store on the host.

    2. If you mount the new data store (which did not exist before), you can mount once the new hosts are added to the new cluster. (Your SAN admin help)

    3. If you want to move your virtual machines from data store before the newly added/mounted data store, please SVMotion these virtual machines (by right-clicking on the VM > migrate > data store > select the data store that is new)... Please follow the same procedure for all virtual machines.

    4. you don't need to add empty hosts to the new cluster, add just as soon as all guests without you register VMs. Later, you can migrate to other store of data according to the requirement. NO need to download or download the VM.

    5. Please make sure that your ESXi hosts will be compatible with the new vCenter. Old version of ESXi always compatible with the new version of vCenter. Just check if you have all valid licenses.

Please let me know if you need any clarification

  • Best practices - addition RDM to the second node (W2K3) MCSC Machine virtual nodes on the physical host computers

Addition of RDM to the second node (W2K3) MCSC Machine virtual nodes on the physical host computers

Unable to find another thread on this

When you add RAW disks to the second node in Virtual Machines across physical hosts in the Cluster / Cluster across boxes,.

VMware said shared point of the storage drives in the same location as the first node sharing storage disc *.

-Select use an existing virtual drive...

-In the drive path, navigate to the location of the disk (quorum) specified for the first node

-Select the same virtual device node you chose for the first virtual machine shared storage disks, IE SCSI (1:0)...

    In other words to add the RDM to mscs-node2, navigate to/vmfs/volumes/lun1/mscs-node1 / mscs - node1_2.vmdk (mscs-node1_2 - rdmp.vmdk)

For years we have directly added the ROW the second node specifying RDM disk not existing does not, in general we do directly from the host, not the vCenter, it seems to work fine.

For what is the safest way, the official method can cause all sorts of problems if you need to cancel the registration of the ROW on the first node (here's where I found no official documentation).

Delete you or keep the file descriptor? We tried to keep him, but ended up with several mappings to la.vmdk/rdmp.vmdk, so now, this system has disk2_.vmdk / disk2_ - rdmp.vmdk and disk4_.vmdk / disk4_ - rdmp.vmdk pointing to the same RAW.

What really bothers me is safety, these are very important boxes, I prefer to continue to have the VMDK and rdmp.vmdk in separate data warehouses, and do not have this dependence on the head node

Your comments please, we are viewing the store only setup of MSCS clusters with lanes separated from RDM and are there risks associated with this?

    * Ref: "Setup for Microsoft Cluster Service - 4.1 and Failover Clustering".

I realize there was an error in my logic

When you work with the main node, if there is a requirement to unmap drives ROUGH (move to another cluster vmware, cloning the system etc.)

Take note of the location of all the rdmp.vmdks

Remove each rdm disk without deleting

    To add

Add "Use an existing virtual disk to disk" (yes I know its bad, but once you create the host calling now think its virtual)

Navigate to the mapping of existing raw device, appearing like a vmdk * and add using the former location of scsi

    Graphic interface hides the descriptor

    A virtual disk has a vmdk and a flat.vmdk

A CRUDE disk has a vmdk and a rdmp.vmdk (the dish is replaced by vocation)

A suggestion of one of my companions is to locate the al the ROW in a single data store small, visibility of virtual machines with raw disk went like this

  • Machines virtual pretty bad performance but...

    Hi guys some info fisrt

    • 6 3.5u4 ESX - 1 Cluster - 1 resource pool all default values

    • 32 GB of RAM each ESX = total of 192 GB

    • 8 x 2.9 GHz CPU - Intel Xeon X 5770 eachESX.

    • See 3.1.1

    • 270 virtual machines virtual Windows XP SP3 - 1 vCPU - 512 MB RAM - power on throughout the day for the maintenance of workstations for customers light Wyse. Software used: Internet Explorer - third 2 apps - Word/Excel viewers

    • IBM DS4700 7 L EACH storage about 150 GB of available for each LUN - connected using Fibre Channel.

This question is for 2 weeks now,

07:00 - some people start work - they take calls and Clients use light Wyse - 30 people - so far everything goes well

08:00 - daily to the Thin Client - 30 people - So far so good

09:30 - nothing changes as people connected but start VM applications run slow victory, by clicking menu takes much displayed, Internet Explorer is very slow to is to open, if they try to enter the third-party application that they cannot see the application update - basically, they cannot continue worlkin.

Interesting point here is and it has nothing to do with Vmware View is when you restart a virtual computer that is problem of you it takes about 10-15 minutes to be up and running again I want to redisplay the prompt for the user/pass. not all machines are restarted, juice 3 or 4 because they are completely unnecessary.

11:00 - the virtual machines that have not restarted back works well and during the day stay VMs works very well although it has even more users since at 13:00 more than balls people to systems. Yes, it's a call center

Any pointer what newspapers should check? or where to start Troubleshootin

I don't really see any high use of the processor or memory.

Is this OK this all power 270 VMs on even if only a maximum of 120 can be actually used.

Any idea what could be the problem?

and the most important fact here every day is he at the same time abot 09:28 - 09:32?  :| weekend even when the number of people is like 20

    Thank you very much

I noticed you use Symantec.  Here's what I had to do to fix this problem in my ESX environment:

-Plan the AV definition updates arrive after hours on the server.

-Disable the 'quick scan' what happens when a client downloads the new updates of AV: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/docid/2006032313184248?Open&src=tranus_con_sl&docid=2005052514152448&nsf=ent-security.nsf&view=docid

-Reduce the number of concurrent clients updates the AV server performs, as well as the speed at which the AV server sending each update of butterfly.  I think I put mine 2-wire and a 750 ms delay: http://service1.symantec.com/support/ent-security.nsf/854fa02b4f5013678825731a007d06af/2e726ee5a5d07e538825740c006700cb?OpenDocument

-If you have any regular customer AV scans, stagger their schedules so that you don't have multiple customers on the same LUN scanning themselves at the same time.

  • "the machine virtual source is not recognized" using VMWare Converter stand-alone 4.01

    All,

Shadow protect IT edition allows us to create backups of image files from our servers. We need the ability to convert files Shadow protect (SPF) in VMWare Server 2.x. files about half of our servers do not convert. We get a message that says: "the machine virtual source is not recognized. What gives? I know image backups are fine because I tested.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you.

    vmnoob

We support only a few specific versions of ShadowProtect.

    > StorageCraft ShadowProtect 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.1 and 3.2

There may be additional restrictions when you attempt to use these types of files, such as the following from the Manual:

    1. dynamic disks are not supported.

    2. all the images in the backup of a machine must be in a single folder, without other images placed there.

    3. for incremental images, so 16 incremental backups are supported.

    4. images of systems with logical drives are not supported if the logical drive is also a system or an active volume

    5. for volume-based cloning, all volumes on the disk until the active devices and the system must be saved.

5.1 for example, if a drive has four partitions, 1 to 4, with the partition as the active volume 2 and partition 3 as long as the system volume, the backup must include 1 to 3 partitions. (ShadowProtect only).

    Kind regards

I use a Win7 box with a Machine virtual Win7 on it.  When I started using the VM, it should start and login and work very well.  Shortly after I started having the following problem.  It loads in windowed mode, so I me the welcome greenish\blueish after cutting inside.  If I wait for the Office to load, when I do the full VM screen, it goes full screen then the screen goes to the Welcome screen again, but it's just a static image.  It won't change until I have send a Ctrl-Alt-Del command.  Can I get the normal window with options for logging, start the Task Manager, etc..  If I press ESC or click Cancel, it will show the office and I can work on it without problem.

If I leave full screen mode windowed after that, the same thing happens, except instead of the Welcome screen, I get the screen of Ctl-Alt-Del as a static picture.  Once again, if I send the Ctrl-Alt-Del command, then cancel, I get the office as usual and it will work until I have try to resize the screen again.

Can someone help me understand what is happening?

The maximum size of the virtual disk that you can use depends on the size of the selected block when formatting of the data store. With the default of 1 MB block size, the maximum size of virtual disk on a VMFS-3 datastore is ~ 256MB.
