Manage another iMac on the Internet?

Is there a software that would allow me to manage another iMac on the Internet?

It would be to help a senior relative when she has problems with her iMac.

Thank you.

You can use an ethernet cable between the modem (= the internet connector) and the iMac.

WiFi is like an invisible computer thread worms (among others) the modem. When you switch WiFi off, your computer cannot reach the modem and so there is no internet on your computer.

  • Can I connect my old iMac (with no wifi capabilities) to the internet using the cable to my MacBook?

I have an older iMac (PowerMac 6 bought in 2003) that only connects to the internet via a cable directly to the router. I moved this computer out of the range of the router and you want to connect to the internet again. I also have a MacBook (late 2009), which has Wifi capabilities. Is it possible to connect the old iMac to the internet via the MacBook?

Yes, this should be doable. On the MacBook, go to the system Pref > sharing > turn on internet sharing via the Ethernet port.

    Hi MP,.

Based on the configuration below, only traffic since the possible management interface to access the internet.

    Global interface (Interface_to_router_Cisco) 101

    NAT (management) 101 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0

You must include your inside interface in the nat statement if you want to have the traffic within the internet go.

    Example:

    NAT (Int_Internal_domain) 101 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0

Our internet service is too slow them download Adobe Creative cloud to another computer and burn a DVD to install in the iMac on the right. Could you tell me how can I download the suite?

    Hi daniela34135887,

I'm sorry but it is not possible to download Adobe CC and burn it to a DVD and then transfer it.

Only, it downloads a small setup file and on executions of this entire process of download, extraction & installation file begins that requires the internet connection. At the end of the process of the application is installed and ready to use.

So, you will need to do it on your computer.

  • Manager profile and updates the server imacs

We are new to this rehabilitation so much ignorance.  We are implementing in our public library 30 off a server imacs mini mac OS X Server (El Capitan).  We have MDM, VPP and the Profile Manager.  Using the Profile Manager, we can get the updates for the programs Apple or operating system to deploy about 30 imacs.  Imacs keep asking apple ID and should not do.  Since these imacs will be out for use by the public, we don't want people by connecting you with their own accounts on itunes/icould kind are locked down, so the updates that need to be pushed from the server.  We followed all the directions in which we can find, but so far without success.  Anyone know the answer?

    Thank you.

    Susan Dillinger

    Director of the library

    New Port Richey Public Library

    Hi Susan,.

Welcome to the forums.  If you are one of those borderline cases where the VPP doesn't really help.  As you deploy systems of shared use, and as you said, you don't want visitors enter personal data on the machine that are public terminals, they does not really benefit you in the collapse of the licenses in the VPP program.  VPP works very well if you have unique Apple IDS on each of these devices and each device has a user invited to the VPP.  But, I guess, you have a local administrator account and possible you are exploiting the guest account or using something like Deep Freeze to protect the machines of significant change.  If this is the case, the last thing you want to do is to manage manually 30 Apple ID each machine which means you would end up with 30 catalogues of app store.  Messy.  And very manual.

You can provide compliance with the VPP program (you have 30 licenses of each application), you will probably have to fudge the distribution of the software.  For example, the last update to iMovie.  You bought 30 Apple machines.  Each machine came with an individual license of iMovie.  You converted to the VPP seats.  Ah, but you do not have 30 users to invite to the program to claim each seat.  I suggest you fudge it a little as you can always stay in compliance.

Download the update for a single machine.  Suppose that you have a "master".  It could even be your server.  Patch iMovie on this machine.  Then, use a tool like Apple Remote Desktop (retail $ 80 on the App Store) to push the App update for 29 other machines.  The application is nothing more than a bundle of the application.  You don't need to do something special for the app get her as a source in the functionality of the copy of the elements or the ARD.  Now you download the application once on the internet and put it on other devices.  Bind the iApps a identifier Apple is a thorn in all shared device deployments.  The key is to stay in compliance of the software.

Don't forget.   The Profile Manager is any device monitoring and management parameters.  The Profile Manager can not deliver software to devices.

I hope this helps.  Looks like a good library to have 30 ready to use Mac.

If the children are, I would suggest installing zero from MIT, Lego Digital Designer Lego, Meshmixer from Autodesk and even the unity game engine.  All are free tools and can provide interesting opportunities for youth programming.  Scratch for the Foundation in computer programming, LDD for the architect budding in each of us (and it's Lego), Meshmixer is a modeling tool from Autodesk, which is free and the unit for those adolescents who are seeking to build their own games.

Oh, and you should probably set a firmware password or activate the full encryption of the disk on machines to prevent visitors curious to play with your machines.  Encryption will require a member of library staff unlock the device at each reboot.  Who can get boring.  A firmware password would be only necessary if someone was trying to use modifiers to boot (which is what you're trying to prevent).

These Macs can open up unimaginable avenues of learning for your community.  Be creative.  Push the limits.  Don't let them collect dust.

  • Instructions for managing macs w ARD on the internet (no static IP address)

Please excuse me if it's asked all the time, but I searched and can not find detailed instructions for this.

I need to manage more than one Mac, on connections to the internet, the devices will not be on the static IP, they will constantly be moving around.

All the videos I have found online seem to show how to connect and manage Macs on LANs w ARD.

    Details:

    ARD v3.8

    All Mac on El Capitan

    Very appreciated for any help!

This question is not particularly related to Apple Remote Desktop; for ARD.  This is a configuration of generic firewall and networking question, so good enough instructions for your specific firewall will work here, as long as the firewall can redirect ports - port TCP 5900, in this case - or if your particular firewall has a VPN - Firewall Server average range and high-end frequently - or if you can implement a VPN server behind your firewall and configure the firewall to forward the VPN protocols (different ports) and ports necessary for the particular VPN.

In general...  I would suggest three ways...   1: set up your firewall to port before port TCP 5900 to the client target.   Maybe TCP 5988.   Or set up a VPN server in your firewall and connect to that and use ARD via a VPN.    If you want to access more than one system on the target network, you will need to either use a range of ports to forward to specific systems behind your firewall and happens to be a problem with many customers - I don't know immediately off-hand if the ARD client allows even to select different target ports - or to set up and move to a VPN.    2: creation and configuration of the VPN server in the firewall allows access to all systems on your network target - a VPN connection makes your local system as it is directly connected to the target network.  3: If you have the VPN server running on a target system and accessible through the firewall port forwarding, this target system must always be available, and all VPN traffic is routed through this system.   It is more complex and can also be a bit difficult to set up.

If you directly expose ARD ports to the Internet via port forwarding, you'll want to either restrict the available source IP ports (to reduce the magnitude of the attackers), and you'll want to be very careful about passwords on target systems.   Ports of the ARD are detected very fluent, and several people and botnets will attempt to access the system password-baited; trying to guess the users and passwords on the target system.   Once attackers have a login and a password, they will then try to spread throughout the rest of the network.  (It's part of why I prefer to use virtual private networks).

Sierra of MacOS support PPTP VPN, so I wouldn't go with any configuration of VPN that you considered it.   I'd probably use L2TP/IPsec, because the customer is generally available in most of the other operating systems, Mac OS and iOS.

There is information available on the network ports used by Apple devices.   If you enable VPN port forwarding, there are discussions on the ports and protocols required to according to VPN you use posted around the ' net and not all firewalls is particularly good to port-forwarding, the protocols and ports VPN. "  Low-end older firewalls and firewalls tend to have problems here.

To locate on the networks of the target systems, you get to use dynamic DNS from client devices or other means to identify the public IP address that is associated with the target customer.   If customers are roaming on disparate networks and not simply roaming IP addresses on their private networks (these addresses can be fixed through DHCP configurations, too) and if you don't have access to intermediate firewalls, then you will probably have to rethink the entire approach, unfortunately.    Connection to mobile systems distance arbitrary is not especially it is possible, he must do something on the client that "tags" or "ad" its network metadata to your own server from tracking client or server monitoring of some other entity (for example messages to the DNS servers used by the dynamic DNS providers), or the management connection must be initiated from the client.    ARD does not support these mechanisms.   Discussions here can get pretty complex, too--in terms of network configuration, both in terms of security for the clients and servers.

There are a few related discussions this general topic in the forums. See here, here, here, here or here.

    Hey again,

  • Firefox does not connect to the internet on this computer, if it does on another computer and Internet Explorer connects also with no obvious problems.

About 1 year ago, I helped set up Firefox on my mother's computer. It worked fine until a couple of days. Now, he is more connected to the internet. The system is Windows XP, service pack 3. Internet Exporer connects to the Internet on this computer. Also, I have another computer with Firefox and it works without problem, wireless. We tried to remove Firefox and then reload and which did not help. We receive no error message. Internet and Firefox simply do not seem to see each other.

Sounds like a firewall issue, seems to affect
More than the other browsers, Firefox.

  • iMac causes the connection to Time Capsule Internet to lock up

Whenever my iMac wakes up and connects to my Time Capsule via a Wi - fi, internet connection the TC freezes immediately for all connected devices, including the iMac.  I first noticed the issue on the iMac where internet was not accessible through any application on the system.  Then I went to my MacBook Pro, I found the same problem from happening.  Even on my iPhone and iPad.  I assumed it was an ISP issue and abandoned.

A few hours later, I went back to my MBP and found the internet connection has been re-established and working properly.  I then went back and woke to my iMac and open Safari.  The field of the internet to a halt.  Back on my MBP connection was suspended again.  Now I think that my iMac was the problem, I turned off wifi on the iMac, and the page that I tried to load it on my MBP immediately came.

Then I tried don't start the iMac in Mode safe mode to see if I could eliminate the problem... no chance.  Even in safe mode, when it is connected to on the wifi time capsule, the internet connection for the entire House grinds to stop.

So, to summarize, when my iMac is awake and connected to my Time Capsule via wifi, internet connection for all devices connected to this wifi network hangs up completely.  The moment I turn off wifi on the iMac, the internet connection is restored immediately at full speed for all other devices on the network.

I'm at a total loss about what to do next... any ideas?
