Manage ESX 5.5 host with VCenter

I encountered problems when trying to add 5.5 ESX host to my VCenter server.

It's my last rows on my log file:

Thanks for the help!

(1) see the vcenter and esxi version, you cannot add higer version esxi on low vcenters version. and also 2) check the dns resolution on the two esxi as well vcenter.  (try adding with the IP address of the host). If it is not the case, check the logs of Vpxa

We recently inherrited 2 4.1 ESXi hosts and wish to manage these hosts with the server vCenter 4.0.

Have you read the manual?  You must be at 4.1 to manage 4.1 hosts, period.

Is it true, what keeps you upgrade to 4.1?  It is a piece of cake, takes every 10 minutes.

  • Cannot add the ESX 6.0 host to vCenter Server 6.0

OK, I'm testing laboratory a vsan 6.0 cluster.

I have my running 6.0.0 esx hosts and vcenter server is 6.0.0 also.

I have the services platform on a virtual machine and vcenter on another. I was able to create a data center, then a cluster below.

Then I went to try to add a host to my group and I get this error...

Failed to contact the specified host (hostname\IP). The host may not be available on the network, may have a network configuration problem, or that the management on this host services may not respond.

Per this KB: KB VMware: Add a host VMware ESXi/ESX from VMware vCenter Server fails

I confirmed that my vcenter server and platform services server can see all esx hosts. From the vcenter server, it can ping the host esx and PuTTY can access all of them. I even installed the client and it can connect to all esx hosts. I used the netbios name, IP and FULL domain name and they all work.

I have only a single subnet, so this isn't a problem. DNS resolution works in all areas of both sides, vcenter esx hosts and host esx to vcenter.

    I am quite puzzled.

OK, after working with VMware on this issue, I think that I thought about it.

All my hosts are DL360 G6 servers.

My hosts are run the same build «VMware-ESXi-6.0.0-2494585-HP-600.9.2.38-Mar2015.iso» ESX Downloaded from HP.

All buildings are in trial mode.

After placing a call to VMware, they had me build some ESX VM, the services of the platform and the vcenter VM on an ESX host. We suspended because it took all day to go upward.

Once I woke up all the parts (sql server, esx vm, server platform & vcenter) in virtualization nested, I created my data center, then Cluster then added the ESX host.

The hosts added properly, no error. Then I remembered when I installed ESX inside a virtual machine, I am angry that the iso, I had the habit of HP does not work in my VM nested due to virtualized hardware.

Then a fire came into my head. We will rebuild all of the physical cluster but NOT use the CV provided the iso file but use VMware provided iso file "VMware-VMvisor-Installer - 6.0.0 - 2159203.x86_64.iso".

I did it today. I have rebuilt all hosts with the provided iso file VMware ESX...

Spun SQL Server vCenter, service platform, all VM VM VM you need. My AD & DNS VM are on another server, so he has been upwards all the time.

Connected to the web interface (yuck!).

    Created my data center...

    Created my Cluster...

    Add all my Cluster hosts.

    All of this worked!

Therefore, if you encounter the same problem, I'm plan to generate your with the provided iso file VMware ESX hosts and try it. In my case, the provided HP iso file didn't work properly for me.

I also downloaded the iso file of HP 2 other times to make sure and do a validation test and it did the same thing.

  • ESX 4.1 works with vCenter 4.0?

    Hello

ESX/ESXi 4.1 works with vCenter 4.0? My understanding is that ESX4.0 works with vCenter 4.1 or higher. Thank you!

You need to have your vCenter server during the highest broadcast. It is possible to vCenter 4.1 to manage hosts 4.0 and 3.5. It is not possible for vCenter 4.0 to manage guests 4.1.

  • Displacement of the ESX 4.0 host a VCenter server in different Windows domain

    Hi people,

Current situation: two ESX 4.0 host controlled by a VCenter 4.0 Server (Cluster) within a Windows Server 2003 - field. All the user access control is done with the users in the domain of the old domain. The cluster and all the VMS are running fine without any problem.

There is a Windows 2008 domain. We want to set up a new server VCenter 4.0 inside the new domain and move both ESX 4.0 hosts to the new cluster / VCenter Server 4.0.

What is the right way to do it without block me out Vcenter / ESX?

    1) implemented the new vcenter one create a cluster

    (2) removing both the old cluster ESX servers

    (3) joining the two ESX servers to the new cluster

    (4) granting the domain users from access to the new domain to virtual machines...

    Is it really that easy?

Should which accounts I include both ESX hosts to the new vcenter/cluster? The root-password? We have forgotten, but there is a way to reset it (single user mode), this shouldn't be a big problem.

Thank you for your kind support,

    Wolfgang

You must add the hosts to the new cluster through their DNS names and supply the root password when prompted.

Make sure that select "piggyback pools of resources of the host" If you want to keep your pools on the new vCenter. To do this you must enable DRS in the new cluster too.

  • moving my SQL Server to another host (with vcenter database)

    Hi all

I am in progress to improve my environment at ESX4.0. Now I have to move my only SQL server VM to the new host, who is already on ESX4.0 level. My only SQL server hosts the vCenter as database. I don't have a vMotion.

To move my SQL vm, I need to turn it off and then migrate my ESX 4.0 host. The problem: when the SQL Server is disabled, I lose connectivity to the vCenter server and therefore cannot migrate the virtual computer to another host.

Is there a way to fix this, or is my only option to move the virtual machine in question off vCenter SQL database?

The physical files of the VM for SQL server on an iSCSI box and will not change the location of the data store.

Open the browser of data store, right-click right the VM's vmx file and choose "add to the inventory.

    Hi all

I have a question I need help with that.  We have 4 standard Vcenter and we have some 3.0/3.5 hosts old, that we're going to retire but want to manage in Vcenter until we do.   I Vcenter configured to use the same licenses as virtual Center 2.5 server, [email protected].  It is also checked to "Reconfigure the ESX hosts to use this license server."

  • Process of upgrading 3.5 host with vCenter server Virtual

Hi I have recently updated my old server from client to vCenter 4.1 virtualized VI, sitting on my 3.5 cluster.  I intend to use the Update Manager to upgrade my guests, but I don't know how the virtual vCenter server is going to face?  The plan was: 1. move all the virtual machines off-host 1.  2 put the host in maintenance mode 1. 3. on the vCenter server, create a base, then line at host level 1 to 4.1. 4. now - at this point add this host in the cluster? And migrate the server vCenter top, so I can upgrade the other two hosts?  If the works above, then it should be quite a nice update, if you cannot add the new version of the host of back in, how you vMotion the vCenter server off so you can keep control of the cluster.

IMO, it should work. To upgrade from 3.5 to 4.1, your ESX host must be in 5 update (see http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r41/vsp_41_upgrade_guide.pdf) already.

If VMotion or migrate the server vCenter Server - for some reason-does not work, you can delete vCenter Server of the inventory of the old host and add to the inventory of the new host.

  • Strorage VMFS on ESX 3.5 host with multiple disks

We have an ESX host configured with 2 discs: the first is mirrored (raid 1) 230 GB for the host operating system. The second is a 4 TB raid 5 for VM.

When we look at the host "Configuration tab - & gt; Hardware - storage adapter - & gt; Target component"SCSI 0 reflects the mirror (230 GB) and SCSI target 1 reflects the Raid 5 (4,09 TB) correctly.

If I go to "Configuration tab - & gt; "Hardware - storage" curiously the vmhba 0:0:0 (230 GB drive) does not appear in the listed storage pane.

    and

When I try to 'Storage to add' the greatest player, I can create on vmhba 0:1:0 (4to) is a vmfs3 96 GB partion.

I would use the partion full 4TB! I can do this with vmfs3 or am I still limited to 2 TB without point. (Prefer not to use the extensions)

Finally 'and how' since when adding storage gives me only 96 GB as "Max capacity"?

Your help is needed and appreciated muchly.

    MR1Y

    Each drive must be< 2="">

So divide your RAID5 volume in 2 virtual drive.

  • How to add additional sas drive to an existing IBM midsize V3700 and do like being active in all hosts with vcenter server devices

    Hello team,

In our infra we have 8 node of the flex IBM x 240 and 1 IBM midsize V3700 host as storage device. In this 19 storage hard drives busy with 600 GB 10 k 6 GB SAS drive and 5 locations are still, that storage is divided into 2 for test and Production. Now we expect for resizing the activity so that we plan to add more 5 hdd storage, can someone guide me how do it properly without any problem.  If I add the HARD drive storage how to initialize and map to the existng storage. If someone has done this before please guide me to continue.uat.JPGPro.JPG

What you have to do is create a new disk (mdisk) group and add to your existing (mdiskgrp), to make task record the following:

    1. click on internal disks and then bind o pools:

    2. click on configure storage:

    3. on the storage configuration wizard, you can select use recommended Configuration or select a Configuration different, but the most important is to select your existing disk group RAID level:

    4. then select the Expand existing Pool:

Once the capacity of the new disk has been added to your existing pool, you can create new volumes to expand your existing volumes (LUNS UAT or logic of PRODUCTION unit number).

Let me know if you need additional assistance.

Hello, I have an existing the vcenter server install managing two esx 3.5 hosts. The vcenter is version 2.5.0.x. I want to manage my new hosts of vsphere 4.1 esxi through the vcenter. I would check that if I improve my vcenter 2.5.0 for the last version vcenter Server required for the 4.1 that I will be able to manage my old esx 3.5 hosts? Will be an upgrade inplace vcenter 2.5.0.x support now the license server in place or I will have to manually install this after? Thanks for any info. Doug Dorbuck

You can mange ESX 3.x host with vCenter 4.x - you can't manage ESX 4.x, vCenter 2.x hosts

I think that in a place of upgrade will keep the license server - otherwise you will need to reinstall the server-licensing

  • ESXi Update 2 work with vCenter 5.1 5.1 update 1?

We had some communication problems this past weekend, and our team Windows have not upgraded vCenter 5.1 update 1 to 2 of the update. While my team upgraded from some of our guests GA 5.1 ESXI Update 2 to fix some bugs. The hosts are still in maintenance mode.

We heard vCenter must always be a newer version than the hosts. Yet, the VMware compatibility matrix says may manage ESXi 5.1 5.1 vCenter update 1 update 2.

We use the DRS, HA and 1 FT vm. We distributed switch and switches Standard.

We will have problems? Which statement is accurate. vCenter must always be a newer version or the matrix?

    Hi Rutager,

You can manage the host with vCenter 5.1 U1 U2 5.1 ESXi no impact on Production or the DRS HA nothing. Please find the screenshot for your reference

This shows vCenter version 5.1 U1 can support up to 5.1 U2 ESXi host.

off experience only question we face is that the Update Manager will not be able to download patches beyond the U1 5.1 patches a few shots in accordance with baseline

Note: 5.1 U1 and U2 each thing will be same agent FDM. no change in architecture HA

  • How to install 5.1 VSA with vCenter virtual?

    Hi all

The organization I work for is planning to install a cluster VSA 2 server in a remote site (ESXi 5.1, 5.1 VSA). To reduce costs, they want to have a virtual vCenter on the cluster. I guess that the virtual vCenter also runs the VSA cluster service.

How the hell can I install this? So far, I have:

-built 2 5.1 with 1 local datastore ESXi servers each

-built a vCenter 5.1 on the ESXi server and installed the Manager of VSA on it (which includes the cluster service)

-joined the two servers ESXi, vCenter inside a data center

Have a running VM (the vCenter) forced me down the road of installation "Brownfield". Very well... I created 2 vswitches and groups of ports and launched the installation wizard. Everything in the wizard seemed ok and he started to install. He has done many things (clearly, it's a very clever installation program) and after some time he put the host without vCenter in maintenance mode. I watched with my eyebrows getting higher and higher... probably soon he would put the host with vCenter in maintenance mode, what magic he would do to manage loses its vCenter (and the cluster service)? No of course, and it has failed with an error message "cannot create the cluster VSA: Add Cluster HA hosts failed.

There is a lot I don't understand about a virtual vCenter on a VSA cluster out of the way to install it.

The vCenter may be on the VSA data store? The install doc does not, it is said "vCenter Server can run locally on a host in the cluster VSA ESXi." vCenter Server can also run remotely and manage multiple VSA clusters. "

But if it's on a local data store, how to manage servers wearing down for maintenance, updates etc? And that does not turn the host it is running in a single point of failure, if it fails the cluster breaks down? The point of the entire cluster is to avoid this.

Am I missing something? I would be grateful if anyone can clear this up, and if he's not going to be an option, can anyone recommend a small iscsi SAN or NAS? It is perhaps less than a 3rd Server vCenter, the VSA cost plus the cost of the internal hard drives in 2 guests. In the remote site, currently, there are only a few physical servers, I don't really have the possibility of the vCenter relying on another host and then moving to the VSA cluster that was an option I read on a forum. Don't really want than wan connects either.

    Thank you

    Matt

The VCS must be outside the cluster.  It does not need to be on a server, it can run on windows or Linux systems class office.  Small footprint PCs are available for ~ $ 200.  It has to be in the same subnet as the cluster nodes.  If the VCS was done in a cluster node, you actually lose the tiebreaker vote and if the node hosting the VCS were to fail, you would lose the quorum of the cluster.

VC running within the cluster will work, but it is complicated on a cluster 2 knots because you may lose the ability to manage the cluster if the node hosting the Victoria Cross were to fail.  You want to have the DB Backup VC and a strategy to recover.
