Management of Windows hotfixes and snapshots

Before you install Windows patches I will take a snapshot of my Windows servers, then I install the patches. Once I have check all patches installed correctly and I don't see the blue screens I remove snapshots.

If I understand correctly delete snapshots actually leaves me with a good OS currently connected.

Someone has another method, that's how "correct" to do and if not what is your opinion?

Nice day...

Yes, it's really the only time when to use snapshots, as a temporary backup of a virtual computer before changes/updates

Have fun

  • Freezes on Web sites in flash like Youtube. The Watch Windows Task Manager process FlashPlayerPlugin opens and crashes again and again. Up to date - how can I solve this problem?

Firefox crashes whenever I open a site in flash like Youtube. If I open to the process task manager, then I see that flashplayerplugin will try and start over and over again and seems to hang over and over again. My Firefox and flash player are up to date. I tried to uninstall and reinstall firefox and flash player. I tried to turn off all the other modules. I even tried to install older versions of flash player, and nothing has worked. My wife uses Firefox to work, so is it possible to fix it?

You can check for problems with the latest version of the Flash plugin and try these:

    • disable an eventual extension of the browser for Firefox Plugin RealPlayer Record and if installed RealPlayer update
    • Disable protected mode in the plugin Flash (Flash 11.3 + on Windows Vista and later versions)
    • turn off hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin

Alternatively, you can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

  • Power Manager 8 (.1) T420 and windows

As a user of two years of the T420, I'm pretty used to the Manager of power and its extended options. When I tried Windows 8 a a few months I noticed that there are only standard electric Windows Management options available. Mind you, it has worked well, but they were not nearly as good as the power manager Lenovo.

My question is whether or not this (Power Manager) feature is available for windows 8 (.1) or will be available in the future?

There is no ThinkVantage Power Manager for Windows 8.

Power Plans and slow down timers are managed by the operating system itself.

Lenovo power options such as battery Stretch and 30 days of standby can be configured in the settings of Lenovo.

What specific feature of Power Manager you think you miss on Win8?

  • Management of user accounts and Parental control in Windows 8

    Hello

I'll post a thread on how to manage the user accounts and Parental control in Windows 8.

A user account allows you to connect to Windows 8. By default, your computer already has a user account that you have been
needed to create when you configure Windows 8. If you want to share your computer, you can create a separate for each Member of your household or office user account. You can also choose to associate any user account with a Microsoft account. Signature with a Microsoft account will bring all your SkyDrive files, contacts and more in the start screen. You can even connect to another computer that has Windows 8 and all your important files will be there.

Here is a video on how to manage the user accounts and Parental control in Windows 8.

Also, here is a document showing you how to manager Our user on Windows 8.

If you have any questions let me know.

  • Error Windows XP and Windows Management Instrumentation

I am running Windows XP Home Edition (32 bit).  I have just installed SP3 and now all my system tools have disappeared.  Any time I try to access system information, I get the message "cannot gather Information - cannot access the Windows Management Instrumentation software.»  Management of Windows files may be moved or missing"I'm not a computer guru, can someone help me? Thank you.

You hear the message says this:

    Cannot collect Information
Unable to access Windows Management Instrumentation software.  Management of Windows files may be displaced or missing.

When you run msinfo32, you see:

    Cannot collect Information
Unable to access Windows Management Instrumentation software.  Management of Windows files may be displaced or missing.

Either the Windows Management Instrumentation Service is not running or your information from WMI files are missing or damaged. It is easy to rebuild the WMI information files and replace all the files corrupted or suspicious.

To solve your problem, stop the Windows Management Instrumentation service, rename the folder suspicious or with WMI, restart it your system.  When the system restarts, the WMI service will start automatically and rebuild the WMI folder and it's content automatically.

Click Start, run and enter in the box:

    services.msc

Click OK to launch the Services applet.

Locate the Windows Management Instrumentation Service.  If the status column indicates that the WMI Service is started (ongoing), right-click on the WMI Service and choose to stop the WMI Service.   Do not again try msinfo32 or the Service starts again (you don't want that right now).

Answered in the affirmative, if requested to stop Security Center and Windows Firewall Services (with stopped services, your system is vulnerable to attacks from the Internet, so do not receive is not on the Internet again until you reboot your system).

Now would be a good time to check also the properties of the WMI Service to make sure the startup type is set to automatic for the Service WMI will start automatically the next time the system is restarted.  Make the necessary adjustments to the Service startup type is set to automatic (do not restart yet however).

The Explorer, navigate to the following folder (assuming that your boot drive is C):

    C:\Windows\System32\Wbem\

Locate and then rename the folder "Repository" to something, as you remember, such as:

    Repository.Old

Restart the computer, and then make sure that the WMI service is restarted automatically and that a new repository folder has been created to replace the one that has been renamed.  It may take a while to completely rebuild the file storage (several seconds or minutes) so expect it ends.

After the reboot, you will notice the wmiprvse.exe Service running in the Task Manager and it will continue to run until it completes the reconstruction of the repository (this may take a little time).

The rebuilding process could take several minutes depending on your system, but eventually the wmiprvse.exe Service ends and disappear from the Manager tasks.

If you then look at the Event Viewer Application log, there may be some error messages like this:

    Event type: error
    Event source: WinMgmt
    Event category: no
    Event ID: 4
    Description:
Failed to load C:\WINDOWS\MICROSOFT.NET\FRAMEWORK\V4.0.30319\MOF\SERVICEMODEL MOF. MOF by retrieving the file from the repository.

This is normal because when the system restarts, the wmiprvse.exe process has to rebuild parts of the repository as well. It is a mistake to sequence as shown below. You should not see these mistakes again after the system has been rebooted and catches up and finishes rebuilding the WMI repository.

Explanations for errors encountered in the case of the Application of visualization of the newspaper the WMI repository is rebuilt:

    Explanation
Windows Management Instrumentation could have tried to compile the file (mofcomp) a .mof marked for ASR, but compilation failed. This is probably due to a sequencing problem.

    User action
To correct the problem, try to compile the .mof again. If this does not resolve the problem, contact the provider of technical support for the program in question.

You shouldn't need to do something about these error messages and do not see again them after that XP has finished rebuilding the WMI repository.

I can't say how long this will take to rebuild, maybe 10 to 15 minutes until it settles completely.

  • Desktop Window Manager has stopped working and was closed

One of our machines (HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook PC running Windows Vista x 64) will receive the error "Desktop Window Manager has stopped working and was closed" with lots of close error. He reappears (as well as all windows flasher to non-aero, then back to aero) in a few minutes, spends about 5 times per hour.

I did some research on this and have already taken the following measures without a bit of luck:

1 run the command chkdsk / SFC scan - nothing found via chkdsk, SFC found some issues fixed, and some, it did not set. Them that it solves not all related to Windows Sidebar, which I do not / does not start.

    2. put updated drivers for ATI Radeon 3200HD - this had a lot of new questions. Installing caused newer drivers ATI catalyst to no longer work with errors during installation and popup errors at startup. After trying several solutions workaround to try to get installed it, I ended up coming back to the driver that came with the laptop, that are properly installed and working without error. I am skeptical of update of this stable driver as a solution to the dwm.exe error.

    3. this problem just started yesterday, that occur with not a lot of changes. Other than updates of windows (I think that .NET framework and a few other updates installed), I replaced NOD32 antivirus with Bitdefender antivirus. The system was stable with bitdefender for about 2 weeks, so I'm not convinced that this program is causing the error.

    4. the event viewer shows the following:

    Failing application Dwm.exe, version 6.0.6002.18005, time stamp 0x49e02696, failed module ntdll.dll, version 6.0.6002.18881, time stamp 0x51da3d16, exception code 0 x 80000003, offset 0x00000000000461f0, process id 0 x 124 error, start the application time 0x01cea0365a457adc.

Offset, process id and start on time all vary, but there are a lot of these application errors in the viewer all screaming Dwm.exe like the failing application.

What should be my next course of action?

You do not receive an error but a caveat. NTStatus results (the set of codes execption used by ntdll - the failed module) begin to 0 for no error, 4 for information (you should never see this), 8 for putting guard and C for error.

    It's your specific error.

    A breakpoint has been reached.

Problem is, you shouldn't have breakpoints. Breakpoints are set by debuggers and stop the execution of the program to the State of the program can be examined. There should be no breakpoints in a retail system. More breakpoints are inserted into memory during execution of the program in a debugger. They tend not to do in the actual file.

So here are two assumptions, either you have no exit code, IE test code (driver?). Or you have a running program that behaves like a debugger (which is suspect).

Each of the three towers of programs, services, and drivers in increasing amounts. So restrict the possible culprits.

    Clean boot

Click Start - all programs - Accessories - run and type

  • my task manager on windows vista family premium does not show the tabs before and used to work properly.

my task manager on windows vista family premium does not show the tabs it used to, when I used to open the Task Manager it would be things like 'process' 'services' 'preformance' ect. in the tabs. but now when I open it it shows just a window that has two columns, one labeled task, and other labeled status. It shows what im running, but there any options at all as the winger treat ect. the window is not even an exit or minimize the icon as other windows are in the upper right. the only way to close it alt f4 do - what I do? Ive already tried to restart the computer, and I'm on the only account to administer it. I have a screenshot of the new manager of task here: http://i1119.photobucket.com/albums/k621/a_bakedpotato/vistataskmanagerisue.jpg

Looks like you may have a virus or other malware. Get your updated antivirus program and boot into Safe Mode. Note that some viruses can hide from your normal antivirus program, so you really need to scan in Safe Mode. To enter in Safe Mode when you turn on first, press F8 on every seconds until you get the menu, and then select Safe Mode. Then run a complete system scan.

If that suits him fine. If this is not the case, use system restore to go back to an earlier date at the beginning of the problem. To run system restore, click Start-> programs-> Accessories-> System Tools-> system restore. Click on the box that says show more restore points.

You can check the corrupted system files. Open an administrator command prompt and run SFC if the above does not help. Click START, and then type sfc in the search box, right-click to SFC. EXE and click run as administrator. Then, from the command prompt type sfc/scannow.

Finally if all else fails, you can look at the rather cryptic system event log. To make, click Start-> Control Panel-> administration-> event viewer tools. Once in Event Viewer system log-click and scroll entries looking for these "error" with indicator see if you can find guidance on where the problem may be.

  • How many fonts can sit safely on Windows 7. And is a necessary like Extensis Suitcase font manager with windows 7?

I had problems with too many fonts in Windows XP, but now I'm wondering if Windows 7 can handle more.

Currently I have about 2000 fonts managed by Extensis Suitcase and wanted to know if I should stay with that or just add them all to Windows 7 fonts?

Any help would be greatly appriceated.

    Thank you, Ryan.

    Hi Ryan,

Addition of extra fonts could not cause problems in windows 7. There's more 100 000 existing digital fonts that you can add to windows 7.

Your best choice is to contact one of the fonts listed on the Microsoft Typography Web site.

  • DVD RW drive disappears from the computer and the Device Manager on Windows 7 ultimate 32 bit

After upgrading Vista to Windows 7, my DVD RW drive will disappear from official view and computing device and a scan for changes on the material or use of the player will not solve. Resolves a reboot of the PC (HP - Sony DVD RW desktop computer).
It appears in the BIOS and when the first install Windows 7 found and the device manager reported everything is ok. It seems that after a power management feature has occurred and the PC wake up the disc is missing and the only way to return it is a restart.
    Help, please

Thanks for the info, I had seen it work elsewhere on the net for similar problems with Vista, but not of joy as the either the upper or lower part reg entries appear under this subkey. They do it for the disk subkey but no CDROM

Hibernation is disabled and I use power management to High Performance with only a screen sleep as a default 20 mintes and the hard drive after an hour of sleep. I upped since the two of them to see if that helps.

I am trying to configure our environment so that users can open the Identity Manager web page and be automatically authenticated via their currently logged on credentials of domain.  I activated the Windows authentication and configured Kerberos in Identity Manager.  However, when you select a pool of offices a command prompt is received always ask the user password.  I read https://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 2143567 and understand that maybe expected behavior.  True SSO would solve this problem?  I read that true SSO supports Kerberos.  Is there another way?  The general objective is to allow the user to log on to Windows and be able to access the office pools and applications through identity web page Manager uninvited credentials again.

Policies automatically goes to "off" If you have your screen as working RGB profile - what is something that you should never do. Always have a standard space like RGB work.

And Yes, "preserve embedded profiles" is the only sensitive parameter. Others are best for special purposes where you really know what you are doing - at worst they will transform your archive in a unrecoverable mess.
