  Thank you for posting.  I'm sorry for your loss.  But the nature of formatting is that it erases all data from a drive completely and he prepares for new data.  Everything gets wiped from a disk or a device when it is formatted.

  Why HP says these sorts of things in their manual so we don't have to go on the forums? That would be because learning things about the operating system of your PC is your own responsibility. HP provides a practical guide that explains things in general terms. I recommend you take a couple of PC course at your local community college.

  All this formatting is confusing. Where can I get information on this subject? What format do I need for my computer? Some great resources are, it's the internet and your local public library and bookstores. Because you are using a Microsoft Windows operating system and you want to use a large capacity external storage device, NTFS (new technology file system) is the preferred format.  exFAT format is also supported by 10 and Windows 7/8/8.1. Manufacturers of memory cards also provide explanations many type of format, including why do not use certain types based on the capacity of flashcard sd media.

  You are able to use any other memory card with no problems on the same computer?

  Try to format it on another computer and check. If you are unable to format it on another computer then it is perhaps because of the corrupted memory card. You will need to contact the manufacturer for assistance.

  Also check if the device is detected in Device Manager. Follow the steps to go to the Device Manager

  a. Click Start, type devmgmt.msc and press to enter.

  b. Locate the device name in the list of Bus USB controllers.

  c. If you see the item on to the SD card, right-click on it and click on uninstall.

  d. restart the computer and check if that helps.

  You can also connect the USB cable for the canon camera and see if it helps.

  What method of formatting you used? FAT or FAT32? I think that FAT32 is the correct way to format your computer.

  If you look at the adapter supplied with the micro SD card, there is a "lock" button label  Make sure that it is not in the 'lock' position and try again.  You might want to try to format with another application like sd formatter or something similar...

  Some memory cards note their speeds by a "class." Canon cameras are recommended to be used with nominal class cards 4 to SD (Standard-definition movies) and class 6 for HD (high definition movies) or more because of the large amount of data written to the card. As long as map meets the following standards for the card, the memory card must be compatible regardless of class or the speed rating.

  SD	Standard Secure Digital card supports up to 2 GB capacity.
  SDHC	Secure Digital High Capacity currently supports up to 32 GB capacity.
  MMC	Multimedia card supports up to 1 GB capacities.
  MMCPlus	MultiMediaCardPlus supports up to 4 GB currently.

  What write speed cards do you use? I vaguely remember reading somewhere that the t3i wrote about 40 MB/s, so if you use cards with speeds slower than that negatively affect your max burst until you hit that buffer writing dreaded.
