Mgmnt network vCenter question 5

Our VMware environment is expanding - we are currently redesigning the network connections.  Can anyone offer recommendations or best practices on the following questions.
(1) on new construction of host can use another range of IP for the management network without causing problems with already used by existing hosts subnets?  Can I change the IP address of the existing hosts without a reconstruction?
(2) we are very shortage of Cisco ports.  My Network Services team asking if we can combine the network traffic with vMotion traffic on the same physical connection management.  Which would have ramifications

be if we allow at the same time?  Unless you have a failure of the host all vMotion activities is controlled manually and very light.  We work (ongoing project) on a DR plan, but have nothing in place.

Is it 2x1GbE or 2x10GbE?
If it is 2x10GbE and that you have vSphere Ent +, I'd go for the unique design of VDS using NIOC

  • Network configuration question

    I'm one of our 5.5 hosts replace with new material and want to make sure that I get the right networking. We have unit vcenter and a HA cluster with shared on an EQ San storage and complete double switches for redundancy. My old hosts have 2 quad port NIC, so configure each vswitch with double vmnic for a total redundancy was easy - I split each pair on the physical network interface cards. If one of the physical network cards is dead, I was still all my connections.

    The new host has 1 quad port nic and dual 2 network cards to port. Network interface cards double port match and have tcp offload capabilities, but the quad port does not. I want to use the dual port 2 for my iscsi and vmotion, so that leaves the quad port for my public connections. What happens if the public NIC dies, especially if they vcenter on this host? I know that all the virtual machines will still work, but will they automatically vmotion to other hosts if only the public network fails?

    Thank you.

    NIC failures are very rare. So, I would place too much emphasis on this scenario.

    Is the answer to your question, it depends. HA has a configuration option called isolation response of the host, who controls what happens when the host loses connectivity management. By default, it is configured to leave it powered on. You can change it to Shut Down, which makes sense in your scenario, as the loss of connectivity management means the loss of connectivity to the virtual machine as well. And in this way when management network goes down all your virtual machines is gracefully closed and restarted on another host.

  • EA4500 + ADSL router: networking noob question

    Then... I'm not sure of the right words to use, but this is the case I would appreciate the help. I tried to figure out how to survive myself, but I find it a little confusing - however, if you think I just need a networking 101 do not hesitate to send me to appropriate information sources (I've tried a few, as I say, but I have not yet found a place where my situation fits!).

    Quick back story: I have a cheap TalkTalk ADSl router (D-Link 3680) where the Wireless does not properly in the House. So I just got a DSL EA4500 router for better strength/speed/compliance wireless - you'll just have to forgive me for not having an ADSL router, which I realize may have been a simpler solution!

    First of all, I put the (D-Link of TalkTalk 3680) ADSL router in Bridge mode and got this and the EA4500 work together which was great as it goes. However, I would be hard...

    I have a tower PC and wish to receive wired ethernet network. While I know in the set - up above I can run a cable from the 3680 to the EA4500 and then another cable to the PC because the PC is closer to the telephone (with the ADSL router) Jack, physically it seems wiser, if I take the PC of the 3680 ethernet connection (along with a second cable 3680 to EA4500 connection for the wireless). It may or may not be relevant that the 3680 is a Fast Ethernet output, as is the network PC card (i.e. are not Gigabit).

    I don't know (a) whether the above configuration is possible and if yes, how, or (b) the question whether in terms of networking, it is best to cable to the EA4500 computer (even if this will create a longer path to the PC and the wiring more).

    Meaning, and if yes maybe someone could give me also a term for what I'm doing?

    Help gratefully received! Garreth

    3680 port LAN (bridge) => EA4500 Port WAN (router)-online PC peripherals and wireless

    It's the best configuration and nothing should be connected to the 3680 other than the EA4500.

    The physical location of the electronics is not important, unless you can not run cable or wireless signal is low.

  • VCenter question 5.5 installation!

    Hi ~ ~ all the:

    I want to try installing vCenter 5.5 on windows 2008 R2 X 64 edition.

    and I use the VMware Workstation 10

    When I installed the vCenter 5.5, I can not connect by vShper Client 5.5.

    I can connect by vShper Web client, but it is seems cannot do anything in the web client.

    My question is:

    1. vCenter should be installed on the windows domain server?

    2. can I install the server vCenter on stand-alone windows server?

    3.I found if I did install vCenter 5.0 then install vCenter 5.5, I can connect by customer vShper. Why?

    4.personly, I think that the web client is not a good tool for vCenter management as so far!

    5. If I download the VMware vCenter Server 5.5 device, will face I have the same problem?

    Dear all:

    After testing, I found my problem,

    If I want to login using vSphere Client,.

    the account must use [email protected], we can't use the local administrator of the server, or use the windows logon credentials,

    but once the connection with [email protected] and giveed the roles of administrator local administrator permissions.

    then the local administrator can connect to vCenter Server.

  • New to VM, network config question

    I have a question with networking on a virtual machine host. IM pretty new MV so forgive me if this is a stupid question or if its in the wrong forum.

    I have a single host VM with ESXi 5 turn several Win2008 server. The physical network switch is a 48-Port 10/100 but a 2 gigabit ports. The physical host has 4 gigabit NIC. Is it better to launch 4 NICs to 100 MB/s or two Gigabit? What happened to run 2 network cards in each (2 gigabytes) and 2 in 100? How do I configure?

    Im just trying to see what options are avilable for me with this and what is the preferred configuration.

    Thank you!

    So you can plug them into the ports of 1 GB as if you don't need all the traffic flowing on routes rising 1 GB and host to the same new host which will be at least 1 GB speed.

    Your army to the workstation traffic will flow to 100 MB max.

    Personally, I would look to pick up a new switch if budgets permit.  You can get a switch 48-Port gigabit for £180 all about, or if you do not use the 48-port you can get a smaller much cheaper.

    Kind regards

  • vmotion - box connected network card question is uncheck after vmotion

    Hi all

    I have a strange problem in Cluster DRS / rules of VM, we do vmotion

    After doing vmotion, VM addresses don't not ping, in the first time I think it's trunk network was not good.

    Do vmotion on the source host and not work.

    After checking configuration of the virtual machine, I see that "Connects" network adapter box is not checked.

    The box was check before, because the ping response machine before the vmotion.

    My question is very simple you already have this behavior?

    I use the following script to facilitate the operation.

    Thanks for your help

    Ludovic112

    $pViServer = '< servername > '.

    If ($viCon.IsConnected - eq $false - or $viCon.IsConnected - eq $null)
    {
    $ViCred = get-credential
    $viCon = Connect-viServer-Server $pViServer - Credential $viCred

    }

    $vmName = "< vmname >.

    $maVm = get - vm $vmName

    $cluster = get-cluster "< NOMCLUSTER >".
    $Listvmhosts = $cluster | Get-VMHost

    foreach ($vmHost to $Listvmhosts)
    {
    If ($maVm.host.name - eq $$host.name)
    {
    Write-Host "nothing to do" $maVm.host "-" $vmHost.Name
    }
    on the other
    {
    Write-Host 'migrate' $maVm.name 'to' $vmHost.Name
    Move-VM - VM $maVm - Destination $vmHost
    sleep - 60 seconds
    }

    }

    If the connected box gets uncheked after vMotion, looks like the maximum number of ports configured for your vSwitch on your target hosts is exceeded...

  • Virtualized vCenter Question

    I know there are a lot of debates on vCenter server virtualization, but I have a question in particular. It used to be that if you had a virtualized VirtualCenter server and it stopped, you wouldn't be able to bring up because the ESX Server reports that there were not enough licenses to start the virtual machine. I was wondering if it is still a problem with VMware ESXi 4.0 or 4.1? From what I read in the manual, the vCenter license inventory gives a key that is stored locally on the ESX Server so that it will follow the server anywhere where he can go, even to another server vCenter. This is why the ESXi server, once he had a key, would always its own key, eliminating the above license loop. Can someone tell me if I'm wrong or has any detail more than what I have?

    Sincerely,

    Christopher Beard

    vSphere4 is allowed by key, so you will have no problem by rebooting your vCenter VM, as it's just another guest on a host ESX (i).

  • Help! Network newbie question

    Hi Experts,

    I just started using VMware and I had a simple kind of question. I inherited 4 Dell R900 x servers. Each server has fiber 2 x 10G, 2xHBA cards, NIC integrated 4 x 1 G and an additional 4 x 1 G NIC. I built all the 4 ESX servers and sort the storage that is be an EMC DMX. The only problem I have now is that I am wise networking? Clearly, it would seem logical to Crete the VLAN of server on 10g cards, but what to do with the other?

    Help, please! Thanks in advance.

    James

    Misread the post above...

    Since you have a sound network cards, you might want to consider this:

    vSwitch0 (Service Console)-> onboard 1 G NIC1 and 1 G NIC1 PCI as a failover pair. The best practice is to have the Service Console on a segment controlled far from virtual machines and networks vmkernel

    vSwitch1 (VMS)-> the two cards of 10 G in a connection to very. Use VLAN tagging to provide access to multiple networks

    vSwitch2 (vmkernel/vMotion - if used)-> onboard 1 G NIC2 and PCI 1 G NIC2 as a failover pair. This should be on one VLAN isolated to enhance security while ensuring that all the bandwidth is dedicated to vMotion

    In addition, make sure that all network adapters are on the VMware HCL.

  • watching storage NFS since FC storage, have network config question

    I have a lot of hosts running ESX3.5 U3. 4 network cards each have... 1 SC, 2 for VM, 1 for SC2 and VMotion. My question is when I go to use storage NFS I should use the vswitch which has the port of VKernel configured on it, correct? and I can only have a VKernel port on a host, correct? If those who are both good while I have my storage VMotion traffic and NFS on the same vswitch (NIC), correct? for my tests, I added a quad-port nic to a couple of hosts and predicted the addition of these NICs to the existing vswitch SC2/VMotion.

    current:

    vmnic0 = SC (vswitch0)

    vmnic1 = VM (vswitch1)

    vmnic2 = VM (vswitch1)

    No nic (vswitch2) network

    vmnic3 = VMotion/SC2/NFS (vswitch3)

    Futures:

    vmnic0 = SC (vswitch0)

    vmnic1 = VM (vswitch1)

    vmnic2 = VM (vswitch1)

    No nic (vswitch2) network

    vmnic3 = unassigned or add to VM vswitch network

    vmnic4 = VMotion/SC2/NFS (vswitch3)

    vmnic5 = VMotion/SC2/NFS (vswitch3)

    vmnic6 = unassigned or add to vswitch3

    vmnic7 = unassigned or add to vswitch3

    control at will!

    You can have multiple vmkernel ports, but not on the same subnet.  If you segment your NFS traffic in a separate network, you can create another vmkernel port to take advantage of this way.

    In addition, the only reason to have multiple sc ports is if you didn't trust your configuration VLAN switch.  To provide redundancy, I pair a 2nd NETWORK card with the first port of sc and get the hardware redundancy rather than adding complexity with a 2nd service console IP.  Then use a 2nd pair for vmotion, a 3rd pair for the vm traffic and a 4th pair for NFS.  That would give you redundancy at each layer, and if you use separate network segments with each type of data, provide you a better level of security as well.

  • network linking questions

    I just bought a new Capsule 2 G and I tried about 30 x to set up and connect to my network without result.  Why is it so * difficult? I should just be able to connect this thing in and extend my existing network.  However, every time, no matter what, it will not apply, and only wants to create a new network.  Help, please!

    Please specify if you want the time Capsule to "extend" your existing network by connecting to your main router using a wired wired Ethernet, Permanent

    or

    If you want the time Capsule to "extend" your existing network by connecting through a Wi - Fi connection.

    IF... you want to the time Capsule to connect to your existing network using a wireless connection, your 'main' router is also an Apple product?

    or

    Your 'main' router is a product of part 3?

    Should we guess you use a Mac with a current or recent operating system installed to configure the time Capsule?

  • New Network Configuration Question

    Out of my element here, have a new building we are evolving towards and want to check the right way to install our network. Rooms include 1 - TZ-200, 1 - LAN + Modem wireless switch dell 1-2824 (data), switch dell 1-2824 (voice), 1 - security DVR. If I configure the TZ-200 to the dhcp server, remove the dsl, taken in the wan port modem dhcp will be the sonicwall pick up the wireless and purge the IP for wireless addresses, as well as configure the remaining ports on TZ-200 LAN will all devices to be on the same subnet/nat for easy access? can provide simple schema, if that helps.

    Forget the feature wireless modem from your Internet service provider. You cannot have two routers 'work' (not in this configuration in any case). The only jobs of the modem is to feed the WAN in the Sonic and the Sonic is one that will manage all SonicOS is designed for, such as the creation and serving Dhcp. unless you are forced by the ISP contract to use the material they gave you, it may be more easy to get just a modem ADSL2 + regular that you can find in any * sale because they are unpopular with the houses of our days.

    To get WiFi in your network, you will fill a WiFi 'something' to one of the LAN in the Sonic ports. It can be of any router wireless of quality home set in Bridge mode (all DLink, Netgear, Linksys, etc, they can all work such as bridges), or a wireless bridge of commercial quality (as Unifi AP).

  • Help an admin! Earn points with a network card question.

    Hello

    Network interface seems to have gone wrong on one of my systems. Had comcast out watching some packet loss and we have started seeing losses of packages ranging from a computer to the router. Day after his departure, he simply stopped ping anything.

    Stopped by bestbuy today and picked up a new NIC $ 20, but when I went to only install, no go... New PCI card and this computer (Pavilion special edition, but who knows what's really inside) has only these few slots long 3/4-to 1-inch that a card can go in. A video card uses plus a slot I.

    What is this called crack and what is the best source for a cheaper 10/100 card. I don't think I need a 1gig network card.

    Thank you!!

    Park

    I worked for HP.

    Garen,

    Probably you need to use a NIC PCI - E 1 x or PCI-E x 4.  What model of PC you are using? What is your motherboardmodel PC?  Have you tried to update the driver?

  • Some Server vCenter / vCenter Questions

    Currently, we run ESXi 4.1 without a license and will move into the Kit of Essentials ESXi 5.

    We have 3 physical hosts with 2 CPU each.

    (1) can be installed vCenter Server on a virtual machine that lives on one of the physical hosts, vCenter Server going to manage? Is this a bad idea?

    (2) if the physical host that has the virtual machine with vCenter Server fails, the other two physical hosts continue to run? Can always to connect us to them directly for basic through vSphere management?

    (3) what is the recommended way to connect to vCenter Server from a workstation? With a local installation of vSphere 5 or via the Web Client?

    (4) the only time we would have more than 3 physical hosts is when we buy a new server and retire an old.  Using the license of ESXi 5 Essentials Kit, can we install ESXi hypervisor 5 on new server, remove the old physical server licenses and then move the licenses to the new physical server?

    (5) because we never exceeds 3 hosts connected to vCenter Server, and we never exceeds 50 VMs, would it not better/easier to use vCenter Server Virtual Appliance? The ESXi 5 Essentials Kit License allows us to use the vCenter Server Virtual Appliance?

    1 - vCenter VM is fine. Not a bad idea. In fact, you'll be able to release the physical server, so you can use it as a host.

    2 If the VM vCenter fails, you can always access all hosts directly via vSPhere Client.

    3 - the vSphere Client

    4 - Yes.

    5 - vCenter device does not support the Update Manager and has other deviations

  • The upgrade to vCenter Question DB

    I'll create a new server vCenter for v5 instead of upgrading my current v 4.1.  The Act of installing vCenter 5 and say things to use my current DB upgade the DB?  Or do I need to upgrade my vCenter 4.1 for the DB upgrade, and then create the new server and that it points to the DB?

    No, you do not have update the vcenter server - when you connect the vCenter Server 5 to the existing database, he will see the database must be updated.

  • ESXi 5 Networking newbie question

    Hi all,

    I'm new to ESXi and I need some advice from experts on the network on the ESXi 5 host configuration.

    The installation program looks like this.

    A HP DL380 G7 server running 3 Server ESXi 5 company 2K8R2 VM, 4 LAN ports on the server, one dedicated to the management network.

    I want to set up the connection in the following way:

    Each VM should have access to the physical network, but I also want that all three VM will not communicate via physical network interfaces but by intra-Server network basically do not touch physical network for VM VM networks.

    If I understand correctly, networking in ESXi if I attribute same vSwitch to all virtual machines they will speak between them via intra network server, but then I'll be able to only affect that one LAN card physical to the vSwitch if my physical switch does not support teaming them and in this case I'm stuck at 1000 Mbit/s for a total throughput of all three VM?

    Then I thought to create three vSwitches, assign a physical LAN card to each vSwitch and each VM to his own vSwitch, but in this case each VM will communicate with each other through physical network right?

    Next idea was to do it the same way as previously mentioned, but also to create a vSwitch more without a physical NETWORK card assigned to it, connect all three of the computer as a virtual card on VM virtual LAN and have a different for this second network subnet and set up all services on all VM to communicate with each other through this (other) network. Then I would have a few problems with the resolution of name between VM if I reference VM by IP? Or maybe not because they are all in the same field of broadcast just to put another network adapter intra-host higher on the priority list in VM network settings physically map network related?

    Thanks for help.

    Tim wrote:

    If you had 1 vSwitch with 2 exchanges, that traffic would be let through the network adapter.

    That's right if you have different VLANS on trade, but if they are the same then the traffic will also remain in the vSwitch.

    You can have several VMNIC (physical ports on the physical network card) connected to the same vSwitch without problems, even if your physical switch does not support grouping. Just leave politics to the default id 'port' of load balancing.

    So create a vSwitch, add vmnic as much as you like, and then connect your virtual machines to the vSwitch. Note that a single virtual machine will not be able to get more than 1 Gbps in flow, but the different virtual machines will span outgoing ports.
