  I wanted to just warn you that there is a scam email autour, supposed to come from a "Windows Live Account" saying that your about to be closed if you do not provide account details [name of user, password, date of birth, etc.] so that your account can be "improved." The email is poorly written [bad grammar, etc.], but lists the corporate name of Microsoft and the address at the bottom.

  I just received an email claiming to be from Apple in the form of an invoice of iTunes for a purchase that I did not. He was transferred too an old email address that is no longer, I use and is not connected to my Apple ID. Is this likely to be a scam email? I didn't click on the link provided in the email, that I can use to check my subscriptions.

  Hello, I got 2 phone calls this week to an Indian sounding man claining it is from Microsoft and that my computer is attacked by a massive virus. It then asks me to check start / my app work/manage/computer/management and says you can see the warnings that we sent you. There are warnings, so the first time, he did, I thought but has no confidence in him, even if I did say that he had arrived since I downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials, which he found very interesting. Then, I finished the call and removed MSE and reinstalled AVG free. I scanned the PC (with MSE previously) and AVG and no threat or anything found. He or someone similar - rang again this morning with the same terrible warnings, but my wife ended the call quickly. Are you aware of this presumable scam? Or was it authentic? Please notify.

  I received two emails claiming to be from Microsoft Support Center tells me someone in Tokyo tried to access my account.  After the first I called my computer support person, he said it's probably a scam, delete.  Today, I got the same message with the same information.  How can I know if is is legitimate or not?

  Think of your tech support person.  Microsoft does not contact individuals by e-mail or telephone to tell them that their computer has been attacked, his account has been compromised, or something similar.

  If you are unsure of the foregoing... what email told you to?  Call a number without fees or go to a poll official website?

  If it's a phone number, enter the number in a Google search and see what the results are.

  Links in emails are trickier because they can be disguised.  Just because a link says www.microsoft.com, click top can take you somewhere else entirely.  Try clicking on the link in the previous sentence (it's safe).  You can see the actual code behind any email, but the techniques to vary depending on what mail program you use.

  I got an email from PayPal saying I paid for a subscription of 39 dollar to Skype, but I don't even have a Paypal account, it is a scam, right?

  I have checked our records and you are right. There is no recent orders in your Skype account. If you receive an email that you suspect fraudulent, please DO NOT open the attachments to the email, the response to the email, or click on the links in the email.
  
  I suggest you contact PayPal for more information on the e-mail you received.
  
  Regarding e-mails from Skype, they never address anonymously. They will always contain your name or Skype name. The information they contain are either on skype.com site, or on your account page.
