Migrate the virtual machine fails - "a general system error occurred.

I have a host in my cluster which I am unable to migrate all the machines. Migration always fails at 13% with the error "a general error has occurred: There is no message after the colon. In tasks and events, I see the following under events:

  • "Migration error" warning: a SNMP trap was sent
  • Alarm "migration error" [name of the VM] action
  • Alarm "migration failure" changed from gray to gray
  • Cannot migrate to [NEW HOST], [STORAGE]

The substantive test on the list is the first.

VCenter is version 5.5 and ESXi is 5.1 on the source host and destination.

The lack of information in the error message let me very well what to do next. It is a cluster of production so I'd like some suggestions that don't involve slaughter the hosted VMs. thanks in advance for your help.

  • vSphere device instant Reversion fails: A general system error occurred: could not remove change tracking file

Many people, I'm a little in the soup this time!

My goal is to improve of vSpere 5.0 to 5.5 has. I have the new device ready to go, but the old device just not show me the upgrade tab. Because I had already taken a snapshot, I thought that I would give to the 'update' a go. Then I changed my mind and tried to go back to the snapshot and received the error in the title:

A general system error occurred: could not remove the file change tracking.

I wonder if there is a difficulty, I can try to get back to a good functioning device 5.0 before I retry upgrade - or if I should just set up my new 5.5 a device from scratch. I use only 3 guests on more Essentials.

    Thanks for all the tips!

When I have a virtual machine to export to the FVO on an ESXi 4.0 and then try again to import the FVO on VMware Player or Workstation 7.1, I get the following message:

«Could not open the Virtual Machine: failed to query the Source for more information.» I can successfully re-import this file OVF in an ESXi server without any problems. Anyone know why this is happening and what can be done to remedy this?

    Good luck!

  • Migrate the Virtual Machine Linux to ESXi

    Hi all

I have VMware Server 1 base on CentOS as operating system with a few VMs, VMS spot on my map of storage with NFS.

I start converting those VMs with vmware converter 4.0 beta, I convert ESXi virtual machine move to storage even but with iSCSI.

So far I have only converted machines Windows without problem, now, I try to convert the Linux (ContOS 5),

After the conversion, I try to turn on the machine, but get a "Kernel Panic"

    Impossible to mount the SYSROOT.

    Please see attach.

Until I find a solution I return to this virtual machine to the old vmware server 1 and then it works.

    Any idea?

    Thank you.

    Hello

I don't speak of computer virtual SCSI controller, you can get to know that this process.

    (1) select the virtual machine.

    (2) right click go to properties.

    (3) select the Hardware tab, check for SCSI controller entry there you can see if it's the logic Lsi logic or bus controller.

Once again something that I want to confirm, during the conversion, you had a SCSI disk for this virtual machine.

    Thank you

  • A general system error occurred after the P2V conversion

    Hello

I have trouble starting a virtual machine right after P2V with VMWare Converter4.3 conversion.

My infrastructure is ESXi-4,1 to connect using vSphereClient.

The material is: Dell Power Edge T310 - 64-bit; 4 GB of Ram; CPU intel Xeon 2.4 GHz 4 cores per socket.

Already running 2 VMs - MS Server 2 K 8 64-bit, DC and File server.

Just added one more VM workstation XP Pro 32-bit and the cant restart it. Error I get is: a general error occurred: the virtual machine could not be started.

    any help with it?

It uses IDE or SCSI controller?  If IDE, I'd do the conversion again and move the SCSI controller

  • Migrate the virtual machine for Exchange 2010 from one host to another

    Dear members,

Please let know us if the migration of a virtual machine for Exchange 2010 is supported to an Esxi host to another, the Esxi version is 5.0.

There are unique Exchange environment with the role of hub, CAS and mailbox on the same virtual server. We have a maintenance window and we think moving exchange virtual machine from one host to another, but before that I need to be sure if it's supported my MS and do not want to have problems after, because I have also gotten to know here in the forums this snapshot for Exchange 2010 is not supported by Ms.

    Please notify.

    Kind regards

I'm not aware of any limitations with VMS Exchange migration. Anyway, you can consider running the migration during the low workload.

  • Same material, cannot vmotion.  Stops at 13% with a general system error occurred: invalid argument.

I have four IBM (now Lenovo) x 3550 M4 (7914AC1) hosts that have been purchased by groups of two, several months apart.  Those purchased at the same time can vmotion between them but they cannot vmotion with those bought later OR with one of our older infrastructure (Nehalem IBM level - x 3650 M3, M3 x 3550, etc.).  The most recent M4 can talk to the fine old hosts.  Can I migrate invited powered down.

VMware support was not able to give any help on this matter and have lost instead of my time (including do not contact me for weeks and also current exit without changing to another engineer; manager failed in this regard, too).

I pulled the material apart - I can say it's all the same material (looks the same, has the same numbers and RUF).  The machines were configured the same.

Firmware isn't exactly the same thing on the material but is VERY close.  I have one of each generation updated with the same Xpresspacks of IBM, and so except for the image diagnosis of pre-start, I think that they are the same.  I'll check this again once then.

VMware drivers are the same.  They were not.  They are now.  I got 5.5 latest drivers for everything that I can find a driver for (including cards CF - using the driver Qlogic native VMware NICS (igb); approx 10 GB (not being use IGB but fact still); the provider CIM, MegaRAID controller.  I used VUM update their last 5.5 (standard license) with all the patches.  vCenter is a 5.5 vCSA was last updated.  I went into the BIOS settings side-by-side and ensured that everything is the same.  I did the same thing with everything I could think of in vSphere (found about 5 differences, but nothing fixed).

Management is the network of vMotion.  It's on the same VLAN as one of those guests are on (the clients are spread over 5 different VLAN).  VMware support put in place a different vSwitch for vMotion with no luck.

The symptoms are the same regardless of their orientation (old to the new, new to the former) and don't care about the type of virtual machine (Windows 2008R2, CentOS 5.5, RHEL 6.7) or at the level of the material (VM 10 or 7 VM).  It also fails if it is standard or high priority or if it is with the web client or the Windows client.

The place with the most characteristic symptom that doesn't show anywhere in googleland except to the pastebin is in the file /scratch/log/hostd.log of the host.  The host that sends the guest throws a vmsvc.vm error VMotionCmdCb [1461010590046389] 'a': error - 6: invalid argument.

If anyone else has seen this (obviously someone because it is on pastebin) and understood, please enlighten me.

    Thank you!

    Jeff

  • Cultivate the hard drive for the virtual machine fails but customer VI indicates successful operation

I tried to cultivate a 1 TB drive of 100 GB on a block size of 8 MB LUN with still 117 GB of free space. I thought that 17 GB of free space would be sufficient.

I had a successful operation task in VI Client after resizing this vmdk to 100 GB, BUT no real changes.

I tried adding 50 GB (117 GB of free) and the same result.

Only when I tried to increase 20 GB, then it worked fine.

    QUESTION:

What is the percentage of disk space must be available on the LUN to cultivate a vmdk to 1 TB? It is a percentage of the vmdk file?

Why the VI Client would be a successful operation, but no change?

    Your help is most appreciated.

    Thank you

Bottom line first: you won't be able to easily overcome.

The reason is the large block size.  If you choose blocks of 8 MB, that's fine, but the trade-off is that even if a sub-block is used, the entire block is considered as unavailable for growth.  So, you have the space wasted in many of your blocks of 8MB.  It is considered as free, then you think you have enough space to grow, but in reality, there is very little, if any, blocks that are completely empty.   Unfortunately, there is no easy way to "squeeze" the blocks and/or move the white space in the 'clean' for growth blocks.

A lot of people think 8 MB is the way to go and use it all the time.  Not the case.  As with most things, there is a trade-off space-time.  Personally, I use 1 MB of size; It is a good choice of 'medium', memory load balancing and free space.

For myself, I don't have if worry VMFS, increasingly because if my store of data starts to be complete, I just grow on the fly with my Xiotech.  Can't use VI at all.

  • Storage test 55 certification vmotion, storage vmotion fails with "Could not lock file" on the virtual machine during storage vmotion

In my view, that it is a known problem in ESXi 5.5 Update 2 release notes, someone knows a solution yet? This is an excerpt from the release notes:

    • Attempts to perform live storage vMotion of virtual machines with RDM disks can fail
Storage vMotion of virtual machines with RDM disks can fail and virtual machines can be considered in turned off of the State. Attempts to turn on the virtual machine fails with the following error:

      Cannot lock the file

      Workaround: No.

VMware support for the record said that the patch will update 3, it is known as an intermittent problem. Finally, it happened to me on the 9th attempt.

  • Error! The CPU was displayed by the operating system of Fords. Power off or reset the virtual machine

Why when I try install Mac Os Yosemite in VMwareplayer when the virtual machine starts, I get this error:

The CPU was displayed by the operating system of Fords. Power off or reset the virtual machine

I have an AMD A10 processor

VMware does not support the operation of Mac OS X in VMware Player/workstation!  Also, legally virtualisables versions of OS X running in a Virtual Machine can be done when done in the Apple brand hardware but when done while running under OS X, and for that, you need VMware Fusion not VMware Player/Workstation (or use ESX/ESXi on Apple brand hardware) you violate Apple's SLA for this product.  So any help can you provided for OS X in this use of the scenarios that it would violate the community VMware operating conditions to do.

What is different when migrating a computer running and an engine out of VM migration?

I've attached screenshots of the network for guests and the VSA Cluster configs.  What other information can I provide for troubleshooting?

Thank you very much for your help!

If ESXi hosts are still able to communicate with each other via a network that is enabled for management, the host is not partitioned.  Do you have other vmk interfaces enabled for management traffic?  If so, the two hosts would still be able to communicate with each other and would not be considered an event of host isolation.

Take a look at the excellent deep dive HA post of Duncan.
