ESX to ESXi upgrade
Hi all!
So my question is:
Is there a way to easy upgrade from esx to esxi? or it will reinstall anyway?
No way to upgrade. You must reinstall the host. The host document, reinstall it and configure it again :-)

Licenses vs Upgrade vSphere ESX to ESXi immigration?
Hello
The current environment has three hosts ESX4.0 with the Advanced license and vCenter Standard. Upgrade to Enterprise Plus, is little pain due to costs involved that. Each CPU will cost about $ 2400, which will include the support of the company "Active Advanced Support of license will not be considered, it is directed by represensitve sale."
Because eventually retired ESX and ESXi will only be one, I think migrating to ESXi. But, what I have to buy a new license for the ESXi or existing vCenter license will be able to manage ESXi hosts?
If I'm going to buy a new license for the ESXi, what are these licenses and what will be the cost of it?
Thank you
ESXi is a constituent of the vSphere4. You will still need to upgrade your edition of desire, as advance to normalize or all at the same company for storage vmotion & DRS.

Upgrading ESX to ESXi 4.1 3.5?
I searched through the release notes, and it seems clear to me that I can go from ESX 3.5 to ESXi 4.1.
It is specified that you can go to the ESXI have 3.5 to ESXi 4.1, but only as of ESX 3.5? Can I upgrade level, or what I have to do a fresh install?
ESX 3.5? Can I upgrade level, or what I have to do a fresh install?
Cannot mix types i to i or ESX to ESX, you cannot 'upgrade' (i) ESX to ESX or vice versa. So a new installation is necessary.

No direct upgrade from ESX to ESXi?
Am I right that you cannot run a simple update to ESX to ESXi? Talking about versions 4.0 ESX to ESXi 4.1 here. I can do a new installation easily enough, but I'd rather not.
Also, just as a question, is there a way to check if a host ESX or ESXi vCenter? It seems like it should be obvious, but I can't find it there.
Thank you.
Hello.
Correct, there is no simple update to change versions.
If you select the host in vCenter, examine the area above the tabs to display the version information.
Good luck!

Hello all;
Well as the title says, I'm really confused.
I got vCenter 5.1 for 3 guests. 1 host has been implemented with VMware ESX4.1, build the 1363503. I'm finally upgrading of the host, but I do research & find contradictory stories then maybe someone can help?
On a different topic about DCUI, another Member pointed out that you can not upgrade, it had to be a new facility that is NOT an option because the guests are sharepoint, sql, web servers, etc..
You can connect to the Service Console but keep in mind there is no way to do an in place upgrade from ESX to ESXi -either 4 or 5 - it has to be a fresh install -
But if I google the topic, I find several results with:
- vSphere 4.1 and 5.1 in place upgrade by using VMware Update manager - YouTube In this video, you will see that it starts to ESX 4.1 and ends with ESXi 5.1

- Adrian Costea & amp; #039; s blog & amp; raquo; Upgrading ESX 4.x to ESXi 5.x using VMware Update Manager & lt; / title & gt; & l... This is a tutorial using vCenter Update Manager
Anyone can shed some light on this discussion? I can't afford to lose all the guests for a new installation is not an option but I need to upgrade to 5.1.
Thanks in advance!

Supported on ESXi 5.5 upgrades
You can upgrade an ESXi 5.0.x and 5.1.x host directly ESXi ESXi 5.5 and in most cases, you can migrate a
ESX 4.x or upgrade an ESXi 4.x host directly to ESXi 5.5.
The details and the level of support for an upgrade or migration to version 4.x, ESX and ESXi hosts and
version 5.0.x and 5.1.x ESXi hosts to ESXi 5.5 depend on the host to be upgraded and the upgrade method
you are using.

Updating ESX to ESXI 5.1 4.1
We currently use ESX 4.1 and want to upgade ESXI 5.1. Are there instructions available through video upgrade or documentation? Also, how the new licence with respect to the use of memory and CPU in ESXI 5.1. What are the benefits of upgrading to 5.1?
Thank you
Scott
Hi Scott,.
Check this box:
http://www.VMware.com/files/PDF/Techpaper/VMware-vSphere-50-upgrade-checklists.PDF
In ESXi 5.1, this link will give you a quick way to see license restrictions. Moreover, like a physical processor of rule 1 = 1 license (no carrots or vRAM limitations).
http://www.VMware.com/products/Datacenter-Virtualization/vSphere/compare-editions.html
In the advantages, firstly, a change of ESX to ESXi. You will get a smaller and more secure hypervisor.
Since version upgrade from 4.1 to 5.1, this will depend on what version you have... for example, if you use now 'advantage' you will have "business" in version 5.1 as advantage licenses no longer exist.
Then you have many new available technologies, better technology HA that uses the heartbeat data store, you have more features such as VSA, vSphere replication, features improved, such as the Protection of the data instead of retrieving data... and the list goes just. Oh, you also have VMFS5 which is more flexible and optimized than VMFS3 (ATS instead of lun level blocks, only 1 block size, the larger capacities of data store, etc. etc.)
Know that when the upgrade of the service console ports will turn to ports (perhaps you need to enable HA on these manually later). Beware if you are using third party agents that maybe they do not work in the new hypervisor, check your scripts in case you have also some commands no longer exist, no VCB more, Manager update won't let you patch your virtual machines. So, carefully read the upgrade guides
Best regards and good luck!

DRS cluster: You can mix 4.1 ESX and ESXi 4.1?
Not very complext, but we have a DRS cluster of 8 hosts x 3850 of IBM on ESX 4.1 and we will upgrade them both to ESXi 4.1 update 1. There will be questions mixing a cluster of ESX and ESXi servers?
Yes, 100% supported! both are the same hypervisor, so you should have no problem running in the same cluster. After all it is the best way to do a upgrade spread, and how we made our move between ESX and ESXi.

There is no upgrade path between classic ESX and ESXi. Thus, a clean install is your only option.

vSphere ESX or ESXi? Only one to choose...
Hello
I have to make the decision between the two, currently I have a mix of ESX and ESXi installed in my infrastructure.
I heard we should all 'UPGRADE' to ESXi, well I thought that ESXi is that the poor cousin of the ESX ESX was the version to be on!
And how would finance ESXi, work permit?
Thanks, Julien
Hello
We have the ESXi since ESX 2014 will be step by step more vmware support.
and according to the licenceing is worrying choose from standard, walking, enteprise and wide + .whichever is suits your infra... all have their characteristics to distinguish and costs.

I have 3 ESX hosts and vcenter 1 host (running in a VM). My plan for the upgrade to ESXi is to:
1. the active 4 vm Vmotion and vcenter for an ESX host.
2. install ESXi host with no VM
3. Add the new vCenter Cluster ESXi host (so now the cluster would be 2 ESX and ESXi 1)
4 repeat the steps above until all of the hosts are the ESXi
The guys you see no problem with that?
Can I mix and match ESX and ESXi in the same cluster?
Can I vMotion between ESX and ESXi?
Thank you guys!
You can do a VMotion between ESX and ESXi (and vice versa) as long as all of the hosts are all the amendments or Intels processors only. In addition, each host must be able to have access to the shared too much storage.
Finally if you cpu are too much difference, you need to enable Enhanced vMotion. http://KB.VMware.com/kb/1003212

May 4 ESX and ESXi 4.1 exist in the same Cluster?
Hello all-
Installation program:
vSphere 4.0 Infrastructure
CLUSTER1 = 2 ESX 4.0 hosts (Enterprise license) (HA/DRS)
Networking is standard vSwitches
Storage is Compellent SAN Fiber Channel
About 20 mV
2 = 2 ESX 4.0 hosts (EnterprisePlus licenses) cluster (HA/DRS)
Networking is Cisco Nexus 1000v Distributed Virtual Switch
Storage is Compellent SAN Fiber Channel
About 15 virtual machines
The question is this:
How can I upgrade correctly these four hosts 4 ESX to ESXi 4.1 with very little or no interruption of service? Yet once ESX 4 & gt; ESXi 4.1
Notes:
Assume that I already have vCenter Server 4.1 installed on Windows Server 2008 R2 with a compatible SQL database.
More information? I can provide. Can I just disable HA/DRS, upgrade to a host at a time and then add it to the respective cluster and configure? What difficulties will be the Nexus switch vDS cause?
-Matt
Yes, the exception would you use FT - http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1013637.

Move from 4.0 ESX to ESXi 4.1 possible?
Hello
I'm shure, that this question was asked several times already, but I was looking for a long time now and I have nowhere found an answer. The question is simple:
Is it possible to update via update 4.0 ESX to ESXi 4.1 Manager?
I discovered, that (of course) an upgrade is possible from ESX 4.0 to ESX 4.1, but can I upgrade to Version '' i ''? As we know, ESX will soon stop developing the classic version... This is why I'm starting to think of migration...
Best regards and thank you
Roland
I discovered, that (of course) an upgrade is possible from ESX 4.0 to ESX 4.1, but can I upgrade to Version 'i '.
You cannot change the type without a reinstall
As we know, ESX will soon stop developing the classic version... This is why I'm starting to think of migration...
It's almost a certainty, he's not going to happen tomorrow, and when that happens they will always support the ESX version.

Store of data sharing between 4 ESX and ESXi 5
Hello
I have a vSphere environment 4.1 with a vCenter and a cluster of 3 ESX 4.1 access to the content of data through fiberchanel (type scneario) warehouses.
And now I need to install a new ESXi 5.x (cannot be a different version) in a separate environment, outside of the current vCenter, BUT to access the warehouses of data even as the cluster of vSphere 4 current.
Anyone know if there should be no problem sharing between 4 ESX and ESXi 5 access to the same data storage?
Thanks in advance
As long as the FC zoning is configured properly, avoid all the problems. ESXi 5 will be able to see the data created by ESX4 VMFS3 stores, it will not be able to create the same size of virtual machine he can on a 5 VMFS datastore.

Hi all
If someone can help me with a powercli script to create a new account a local administrator on all ESX and ESXi hosts in the vcenter, create a role called admin and give all access except the root. This shoulb be past by a virtual centre.
Very much appreciated to help him.
Kind regards
MelLvin
I suspect that you posted your question to the wrong thread
This requires only a minor change to the script above actually.
Something like that
$groupName = "group"$accountName = "user"$accountPswd = "password"$accountDescription = "A user" $esxlist = Get-VMHostforeach($esx in $esxlist){ Connect-VIServer -Server $esx -User root -Password "password" Try { Get-VMHostAccount -Id $groupName -Group -ErrorAction Stop | Out-Null } Catch { New-VMHostAccount -Id $groupName -GroupAccount | Out-Null } $rootFolder = Get-Folder -Name ha-folder-root Try{ $account = Get-VMHostAccount -Id $accountName -ErrorAction Stop | Set-VMHostAccount -Password $accountPswd -Description $accountDescription -AssignGroups $groupName } Catch{ $account = New-VMHostAccount -Id $accountName -Password $accountPswd -Description $accountDescription -UserAccount -GrantShellAccess -AssignGroups $groupName } $rootFolder = Get-Folder -Name ha-folder-root New-VIPermission -Entity $rootFolder -Principal $account -Role admin Disconnect-VIServer -Confirm:$false}

Difference between ESX and ESXi in production?
Hello
I was asked to meet my client from my manager what difference does it make if I used ESX or ESXi in our world of production.
Except I can't think of a logical reason to use on ESX ESXi... Any ideas please?
Thanks in advance!
PS - I know the basic difference between these two have read a few articles, but nothing gives me a practical reason to choose ESXi.
Since reliese the Service Console on ESX - which is based on RHEL - the reason that VMware moves to only ESXi is it eliminates the need to patch the Service Console and makes it more secure host.
