Migration VMkernel VDS1 to VDS2 e-cards

What is the best way to add VMkernel virtual cards when a host migration using VDS vCenter1 to vCenter2? I have attached a sample script that I use for the process. The last command Add-VDSwitchPhysicalNetworkAdapter fails with an error "value cannot be null.

For background, I have a source vCenter Server (version 5.0) and a target vCenter Server (version 5.5). I have a hot migration from a host that uses VDS between vCenter1 and vCenter2. If I run the script step by step, everything works as expected until the command Add-VDSwitchPhysicalNetworkAdapter. I can then complete the process manually by using the following in the vSphere Client process:

Hosts and Clusters-> select host-> Configuration-> network-> vSphere Distributed Switch-> manage e-cards (for the appropriate VDS)-> add-> existing migration of virtual cards

After completing the manual steps above, I can then remap the VMs and then remove the old VDS (which no longer exists).

Something like that

$vdpgNames = 'Network management', 'Network storage', 'vMotion Network. "

$vdpg = get-VDPortgroup-name $vdpgNames - VDSwitch $TargetVDS

Add-VDSwitchPhysicalNetworkAdapter - DistributedSwitch $TargetVDS - VMHostPhysicalNic $vmhostNetworkAdapter - VirtualNicPortgroup $vdpg - VMHostVirtualNic $vmk0, $vmk1, $vmk2 - confirm: $false

  • datastore idle after you migrate vmkernel

    Hi all

After you migrate a port vmkernel for storage NFS to a switch to distribute to a Standard switch, I am unable to vMotion VMs to the ESXi host were I made the migration. The data store switches to inactive mode and the failure of the operation. Just after the operation fails, it made a datastore has groups and he returns to the active state. If I create a vNIC in a server test and added to the Port NFS group, I am able to use the NFS network without problem. I also noticed that happens when I tried to browse the store of data as well. the vNIC is that all the same configuration in gossip the dSwitch and the encrassante. Any help will be be appreciated.

    Thank you!

This problem was solved by changing the MTU value of 1500 to 9000 since my vmnic came to 9000.

  • Card NIC for FT assignments: where is Ko 1011966?

I'm on a quest to find KB 1011966 as shown in VMware vSphere 4 Fault Tolerance: Architecture and Performance white paper (see excerpt below).  Anyone know where I can find it?  I searched vmware.com without success.

Anyone can join me in this quest?

2.6 NIC assignments for logging traffic

    *

FT generates two types of network traffic:

    • Migration traffic to create the secondary virtual machine

    • FT logging traffic

Migration traffic happens on the NETWORK card that is designated for VMotion and it cause bandwidth utilization of the network boost for a short period.

Cards separate and dedicated network is recommended for FT logging, and VMotion traffic, especially when several virtual FT

resident on the same host machine. Sharing the same NETWORK card for FT logging times and VMotion can affect the performance of virtual FT

machines whenever a secondary antibody is created for another pair FT or a VMotion operation for any other reason.

VMware vSwitch Networking lets you send traffic as redundant for VMotion and FT to separate network cards using the links

NIC failover. See KB article 1011966 for more information.

  • Multi-NIC vMotion with ESXi/vCenter 4.1

We take running ESXi and vCenter 4.1 and after the secure Channel secure Channel 5.5 class and sitting for my exam in a few weeks, I have actively tried to improve our environment. Previously, to the study and trying to learn more about VMware, we were in pretty bad condition. Relevant material (AMD, Intel CPU, generations of Intel CPU, amount of RAM and CPU), versions hyperviosr Mismatched ESXi and ESX and no redundancy, vmotion and TONS of snapshots as backups.

In the two weeks since my course, I have eliminated all snapshots (performance daily vCheck to check on the health of the venvironment), emigrated to 5 similar hosts (and memory/cpu configurations) that we had to drag do not, connected to all ports card NETWORK 6 to 2 x 3560g cisco switches and connected the second switch updated ESX to ESXi 4.1 and patched all hosts with Update Manager (nobody used), created the host profiles and compliance on the cluster and hosts, activated DRS and HA, set up a couple of VAPP for STM systems... the list is long

I still have a lot to learn, but now I'm a bit confused about one thing...

We use Fibre Channel SAN, one side get our second Fibre Channel switch hooked up for redundancy and I guess that Multi - pathing (?) I have a couple questions question...

    1. set up the second fiber switch would give me several warehouses of data, correct paths?

2 can I create and separate vMotion in our configuration, using the CF WITHOUT? Any flow of traffic (for vmotion) through the vswitches or he remains behind the FC switch?

-I know with iSCSI, you want to create a vSwitche separated and installation multi-nic vmotion

    3. in the configuration of the redundant management interfaces do I need to create two vSwitches with vmkernel with separate IP addresses management ports or just create on vSwitch with a vmkernel port and two network cards is assigned to the (two different connected to 2 physical switches physical cards)?

-We will most likely use VST if we can get the trunk ports to pass traffic defaullt VLAN, so I think it is still acceptable to create separate vSwitches for management, vMotion (if necessary because of the CF) and port VM group? The designs I see online usually use only a vSwitch for VST and multiple is.

That's all I can think of for now... Just some things that need to be clarified on... I guess I still need a vSwitch vMotion (allocate 2 of 6 network adapters in it) because some type of traffic would pass over him, but I think that most of the vMotion and all the SvMotion would remain behind the FC switch.

    Thanks for any help!

With regard to the topic of discussion: Multi-NIC vMotion introduced with vSphere 5.x and is not available in earlier versions.

1.) Multipathing is not related the number of FC switches, but only for the number of initiator and target. However, using several CF toggle availability increases due to redundancy.

2.) you must differentiate here. vMotion is a live VM migration process to other hosts, i.e. only the workload of the migration. vMotion only uses the network. Storage vMotion on the other side generally used storage connections - i.e. the CF in your case - to migrate files/folders to the virtual machine.

3.) redundancy for management traffic can be reached in several ways. The easiest is to simply assign multiple uplinks (vmnic) to vSwitch network management. So, a simple 'Netowrk management' will do, and redundancy is made based on recovery of the vSwitch.

From a design point of view you can use multiple vSwitches for different traffic types, or combine them on a vSwitch by configuring the failover policies for groups (Active/Standby/Unused) port for example.

  • Several groups Etherchannel summary

I have a strange problem with a port-channel configuration on my 6509 (IOS 12.2 (33) SXI4a) with redundant Sup720s.  Before going much further to try to remedy through experimentation I wanted to receive feedback from others, in case anyone has seen this behavior.  I think I know why it happened, but I would have preferred to better understand the reasons and also the best way to solve it.

We have a lot of servers in our environment configured with double copper 1 GB interfaces running in a configuration of Etherchannel delivered to our core 6509 switch.  We use LACP (assets) to support reunification between switch and servers

We started with some WS-X6148A-GE-TX-line cards installed in order to support the lower flow of our servers at the same time and save money.  These line cards are oversubscribed on a ratio of 8: 1 as far as bandwidth goes, and we received with this for quite a while.  It emerged last year that we had heavy - hitting a few servers that receive many a fallen executives as contactors interfaces were not able to follow, if we bought a WS - X 6748-GE-TX line card that is almost full-speed capable line by port.

Because we wanted to migrate these servers to the new card online with minimal downtime I thought the easy way to do the following:

    (1) put two interfaces on the line-new map in the same group of port-channel ports currently in use for this server.

    (2) move a cable in one of the new ports and wait to get online in the bundle of this port.

    (3) move the rest of the cable in the port of other new and confirm that it delivered.

    (4) remove the two old ports on the map in slow-line of the config of the channel port.

Using this method with two servers to work pretty smoothly without breakdown in communication to servers.  However, I seem to have some odd leftover information in my config bothering me.  Here is an example:

    den-sw35aa #sh etherchan 36 short

    Flags: - Low P - D bundled in port-channel

    I have - autonomous s - suspended

    H Eve (LACP only)

    R - Layer 3 S - Layer2

U - N running - is not in service, no aggregation

    f cannot allocate an aggregator

M not in use, no aggregation due to minimum links has not met

m don't use, port do not associate due to not meeting minimum links

u - unfit to tied selling

    d default port

    w waiting to be aggregated

    Number of channels: 35

    Number of aggregators: 37

Protocol for the Port-Channel port group

    ------+-------------+-----------+-----------------------------------------------

    36 Po36 (SD) LACP

    Po36A 36 LACP Gi2/9 (P) (SU) Gi2/19 (P)

Last applied Hash Algorithm of Distribution: fixed

As you can see, I have now two groups under this configuration of etherchannel port-channel.  No ports are assigned to the original Po36, and the new Po36A contains the two new ports.

It also shows that I have 37 aggregators and only 35 groups of channels actually in use.  I wonder if this is going to happen with all the servers that I have to do and, ultimately, reduce the port channel groups total I can configure and I used.

My idea of why this could have happened back to fundamental differences in the line cards themselves.  Going enabled card of tissue non-tissu a permit probably was a little too wait for a package of four way occur when I put all four ports in the group.

As much as to get rid of him, I think to close the interface port-channel itself, then physical, then all ports put up in reverse order.  I hope that it would not come down to close the ports and left-hand config port all channel and reconfigure.  At worst a switch reboot, but it's absolutely a last resort, and if I were to conclude that it was to have some sort of negative performance impact.

No previous experience or input would be appreciated.  I was unable to find anyone in the forum regarding documentation and a similar story has not received me any where.

    Best regards

    Ty

    Hello

The following documentation talks about the behavior you're seeing. I do not know if you already took a glance at this document, but I'm still posting here for others who were not able to find it.

    http://www.Cisco.com/en/us/Tech/tk389/tk213/technologies_configuration_example09186a0080094470.shtml#po1A

And for you to remove the aggregation switch reload or flapping interface would not help. I'm afraid you will have to reconfigure the portchannel again. It's the only way you can get rid of it.

    I hope this helps.

    Kind regards

  • Update for vSphere 6.0 U2 with FC SAN

    Hello

starting in January, I have created a new environment with 5 a cluster and SAN FC connected host.

For now this forum Works 6.0 U1 and I want to upgrade to U2 with the Update Manager.

KB 2109712 I found more note: "If a Fibre Channel SAN network is connected to the host, unpin the fiber connections before continuing with the upgrade or migration...". »

First of all, I want to update one of the five hosts to check if all goes well.

I really need to disconnect the FC connections for a U1 U2 update?

If a San is connected to the host, detach the fibers before continuing with the upgrade or migration. Do not disable HBA cards in the BIOS.

I see this in ESXi 5.5 and 6.x ESXi Upgrade best practices documents and KBs but that is really not necessary.

I have improved many hosts from 5.x to 6.x and installed 6 patches with FC SAN storage connected and without any problems.

If we still need to put host in Maintenance mode to install updates and who also unplug all IOs with san storage.

Disconnection of SAN is recommended when you use a scripted installation or manual or boot from SAN, to ensure that accidentally any other LUN Prod didn't get selected during installation.

as long as you use the update for the upgrade Manager, you're good.

  • ESXi 5.1 to 5.5 update

    Dear Experts,

We currently have a version of ESXi 5.1.0 1065491 installed with a customized Image of Dell. We would like to update to VMware ESXi 5.5 Update 2 (build 2068190). We downloaded the custom image VMware ESXi 5.5 Driver Details Dell Update 2 | Reference Dell U.S..

Is it just a matter of starting the host VMware .iso and then selecting Refresh as opposed to install? What we should consider before updating?

    Thanks for your help.

    Oliver

you're all set, but I still love allows you to check if you check these things before upgrade.

    1. Ensure that enough disk space is available on the host for the upgrade or migration. Migrating from ESX 4.x to 5.x ESXi requires 50 MB of free space on your VMFS datastore.
    2. If a San is connected to the host, detach the fibers before continuing with the upgrade or migration. Do not disable HBA cards in the BIOS.
Note: this step does not apply to the ESX hosts boot from SAN network, they the Service Console on the SAN LUNS. You can disconnect LUN that contains the VMFS data store and do not contain the Service Console.
    • VMware strongly recommends that you back up your host before you perform an upgrade or migration, so that, if the upgrade fails, you can restore your host.
    • After the upgrade or migration, test the system to ensure that the upgrade or migration completed successfully.
    • Apply your licenses from the host. For more information, see Reappliquant Licenses after upgrade to ESXi 5.5 in the vSphereUpgrade Guide.

Also I suggest you to read the KB article. VMware KB: installation or upgrade to ESXi 5.5 best practices

And Yes, good luck for your upgrade

  • NFS and LACP

I have a 5.0 vSphere deployment where I take advantage of NFS.  I forced sub and I wanted to share my approach to see if someone has a strong feedback or could play the Devil's advocate.

    Constraints:

    (1) protocol choice NFS

    (2) a single switch cisco 3750 for small sites and (2) 3750 MLACP for large sites.

    (3) all the only 4 cards available for storing copper.

    (4) provider Netapp

For sites with a single physical switch, I create two separate vmkernels on the same subnet (VLAN) on a standard switch and each vmkernel will all have two cards.  VMkernel port groups will hash IP, as load balancing strategies and physical switch will need ports configured with LACP (802.3ad).

For sites with two physical switches I have each spread vmkernel on physical switches.  I'll also have two vmkernels on the same subnet on a standard switch and each vmkernel will have two active network cards.  VMkernel will hash IP balancing political and physical switches port groups is configured to support MLACP (802.3ad).

NetApp will be alive to NFS in Multimode support to allow multiple IP addresses.  Each data store will have a different IP address.

I was planning to use several subnets for the VMkernels, but still have not completely made my mind yet.

    Thank you

    Hello

Yes, if you mount two data warehouses using two different IP addresses, you will use only two links of the ESXi hosts to the switch.  If you use only two links from a controller, you will use so the two links on the way back.  Remember that each device in the path (the host ESXi, the switch and controller) using its own hashing algorithm to determine what port or uplink to send traffic.

It is a fine design, even if you use only two data stores at first.  If you are planning on using all four links at the beginning, then look at how you use your data warehouses.  You're breaking up to .vmdks by the operating system and data? VM and ESXi host .vswp page files burst you? Maybe you should.  You replicate between sites? If so, you can separate data storage for these types of transient data.  In this way, you can create several data stores more and spread over the bandwidth.

    All the best,

    Mike

  • A VM NIC connected to 2 switches?

After you migrate a VM (with 2 network cards) of vSwitchs for a new dvSwitchs of the host is connected to two switches.

    Before:

    NIC1 - vswitch network 1

    NIC2 - vswitch network 2

    After:

    NIC1 - vswitch network 1 & 1 network dvSwitch

    NIC2 - vswitch network 2 & dvSwitch network 2

Why the virtual computer is connected to both switches? (Each NETWORK adapter is connected to 2 switches)

Not when you look at the view of VM, from this point of view it s only connected new dvswitch ehe, but the svitch discovers its connected at a time.

    Jan

The virtual machine has snapshots? As long as there are snapshots that were created while the virtual machine was connected to the vSwitches, they will appear in the virtual machine of summer. This information is retained in case you want to revert to the snapshot.

  • Question on the iSCSI initiators and several NIC

    I read the attached document.

The document speaks to create more iSCSI initiators to talk to the SAN (I understand this bit).

Page 15 step 4: VMkernel Ports associated with physical cards

The document speaks about 3 network cards that have been attributed to a vSwitch.

The document then continue to talk about the creation of links to individual access to a network adapter for each VMkernel path.

    My question is:

    Why do this?

Why not create three separate vSwitches and create an initiator iSCSI for each vSwitch?

    VCP3 & VCP4 32846

    VSP4

    VTSP4

Why would you not create a vSwitch for each iSCSI NIC and VMkernel port. Why the document insists on putting all the NIC in a vSwitch?

The number and type of vSwitches is not interesting.  You can use a vSwitch or vSwitches as much as you have physical NIC.  It works as well for the former two vSwitches static or vDS.  The configuration example is just one of the ways that you can do.  Any combination is supported.

  • Advice on how best to configure the network adapters and virtual switch in ESX host

I'm new to VMware and am its implementation.  I got my training a few weeks ago, and now I'm configing my hosts.  I have 3 guests, each have 2 network cards.  There is a virtual switch that ESX creates when it is installed (vSwtich0).  The books said that it is advisable to delete the VM network port of virtual machine that is assigned to the value group default virtual switch and put it on another virtual switch so that you keep your management network separated from the network of the vm for performance and security.  If I do this, all my virtual machines will have to go to 1 NIC b/c I only have 2 NICs per host.  I thought that I have just to keep all my groups of ports on the default vSwitch0 and add my second NETWORK adapter so that I can take advantage of the Association of NICs for redundancy and load balancing.  However, I'm not sure on the performance and the security risks.  Do you have any ideas or advice?  I could also create two virtual switches and put my virtual machines on one which would have a NETWORK card dedicated and put my service and Kernal VM console on another virtual switch with a dedicated network card.  However, in this scenario, I have no fault tolerance or load balancing.  We are a small shop and we have about 10-15 VMs on each host.  I don't have access to b/c distributed switching we paid only for the company (not more).  Thank you.

Hi and welcome to the forums,

With 10-15 VMs per box and I guess that I would seriously consider adding two extra cards for each host in the production machines. You could then do something like:

    vSwitch0 - vmnic0, vmnic2, vmnic3 - Console of Service, VM LAN network

    vSwitch1 - vmnic1 - VMkernel

That would give you redundancy and performance to access your hosts (SC) and also for all your virtual machines. The VMkernel would get a NETWORK card dedicated for vMotion and could be on a separate network. He didn't need redundancy really as if the NIC sank the only issue is that you cannot vmotion virtual machines. In this case you would just move one of the NIC workgroup through to those switches manually.

If you only have 2 network cards, then I would say having a vSwitch with two attached network adapters and VLAN the VMkernel may be off. I want absolutely to the redundancy of having two cards together.

    Hope this helps,

    Dan

  • VSphere4 network settings

    Hello!

We got our new vSphere4. I have not yet worked with network settings and need the "best practice".

We have 3 ESX host with 4 NICs physical.

Also, we have 2 redundant pSwitches.

    my Concept:

vSwitch1 (2 NETWORK cards): ServiceConsole, vmKernel

vSwitch2 (2 NETWORK cards): Virtual Machines

    is there a configuration?

and how do I make the vSwitches settings?

    Hello

This seems good for the physical connection. I would further like to indicate the following: If you want to use for VMotion VMkernel port in the future, I must set up a dedicated card active and reserve for the SC port and VMkernel port. This means, the service console has active adapter 0 and 1 mode standby, vice versa VMkernel. It is that VMotion has the full bandwidth available during a normal behavior. It can be configured on a port group basis. However the configuration seems very well for me.

  • Locations saved in the card module not migrated

    Hello

I copied the mac to PC win10 Lightroom Catalog.

Everything seems fine, except that my locations stored in the card module are not there.

    Where these are stored?

I looked through the tables with a browser of SQLite, but I have not found where location data is stored.

    Thank you

    Stefano

If you have the store pre-configured with the box checked catalog then you would have it transferred with the catalogue.

Now you can simply migrate Mac locations for windows in the following locatioon:
