Missing icons in preferences in the Apple menu

I have an end 2013 27 "iMac 3.5 GHz I7 with 3 tb drive of Fusion in OS X 10.11.4

When I try to open my system preferences in the Apple dropdown menu all that get is an empty box named system preferences and the icon in the dock looks like a text file icon.

If I right click on the icon in my dock while the empty box is open, I can click on anything whatsoever that I'm willing to do.

Now if I open system preferences in the applications folder in the finder, it opens and looks as it should without any problems at all...

I'm stumped...

I tried to fix the permissions, but that did not help.

Please read this message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don't be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

Step 1

The goal of this step is to determine if the problem is localized to your user account.

Select the feedback connections* and log in as a guest. Do not use the Safari connection only 'user comments' created by 'find my Mac '.

While signed in as a guest, you will have access to your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you use them for the first time. Do not be alarmed by this behavior; It's normal. If you need any password or other personal information in order to complete the test, save, print, or write them before you start.

Test while signed in as a guest. Same problem?

After testing, log on to the guest account and in your own account, disable it if you wish. The files that you created in the guest account will be automatically deleted when you log out of it.

* Note: If you have enabled 'find my Mac' or FileVault, then you cannot activate the guest account. The login 'User comments' created by 'Find my Mac' is not the same. Create a new account to test and delete it, including his home folder, after testing.

Step 2

The goal of this step is to determine if the problem is caused by changes in the system of third party that load automatically at startup or logon, by a device, by a police conflict or corruption of system files or some system caches.

Please take this step regardless of the results of step 1.

Disconnect all devices wired except those required to test and remove all the expansion cards from secondary market, as appropriate. Start in safe mode and log on to the account of the problem.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or an earlier version, or if a firmware password is defined, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can not do this. Ask for additional instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to boot and run as normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things work at all, including an audio output and a Wi - Fi connection on some models. The next normal boot can also be a bit slow.

The login screen is displayed even if you normally connect automatically. You need your password to log on. If you have forgotten the password, you will have to reset it before you begin.

Test in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and make sure you always have the problem. View the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Does not open the system preferences of the Apple menu

Anyone know of a good solution for this?

A few weeks ago I started noticing that I couldn't open my application system preferences in the Apple Menu bar (via the Apple logo > system, or via the WiFi icon Preferences > network, or even Preferences by right-clicking on the desktop to change the desktop background, etc.).

    WHAT WORKS:

I can open the system preferences if I click directly on the application icon or you try to open it from the dock.

I can open the app in the Apple menu if I register as another user.

    WHAT DOES NOT WORK:

The problem does not go away when I restart in mode 'start '.

The problem does not go away when I run disk utility.

The problem does not go away when I remove the "Finder" and "System Preferences".plist file in the Preferences folder in the user's library.

The problem does not go away when I remove the files "Preferences panel" bury of the Cache in the user's library folder.

The problem does not go away when I zap the PRAM.

The problem does not go far if I replace the system preferences application from a recent backup.

I was about to just try and re-install the MacOS, but thought I would try the forums first, since the Apple Support site said that it should not be necessary if the problem is only limited to a user's profile. I found a lot of entries in the forums for this issue dated a few years ago and have tried most of the solutions, but I don't think that you can repair the permissions of the disc more on El Capitan.

Anyone have any ideas? Thank you.

Given all of the things you tried that don't work, over time it would take to troubleshoot more, you could restore OS X in 45 minutes to an hour on a broadband connection using OS X Recovery.

Start your Mac while pressing the command + R keys. From there, you should be able to access the built in utility to verify and repair the disk from startup (if necessary) and OS X using OS X recoveryof restoration.

  • Remove the username from the Apple menu

I have a name of user account displayed in the Apple Menu at the top of the screen on my MacBook.  How to hide this projection?

    Thank you

    Lute,

Go to System Preferences > users and groups > Connection Options >... and uncheck "Quick change of user show." You may need to unlock the preferences panel to apply the change.

  • Software update in the Apple Menu

Update of OS X Mavericks a week ago.  My printer Photosmart C4750 print however, the following message has been displayed - "you must install the software to use this printer.  To install the software, choose software update from the Apple menu.  If the software for your printer is not available in software update, contact the manufacturer of your printer. »

Apple has no update of the HP printer software.  I went to the HP download site and I quote:

"NOTE: If you have recently updated your computer with the mavericks a previous Mac OS, there is no need to install additional software."  Send a print job from your computer, and if the printer prints, you don't need to continue these steps. »

Again, the printer works but the "error message" about having to install the software is not going away.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hello

First restart your Mac, try resetting the printing system and check to see if that can help you:

    * Be aware that reset the printer system will eliminate any existing queue and reset all custom settings driver.

Click on the Apple menu and then click on System Preferences.
    Select Printer & Scanner.
Right click (or Ctrl + click) your product with the Printers list in the left panel and then click on reset printing system.
Click OK to confirm the reset.
Type your user name and password.
Click OK. The printing system resets.

Now, try to add the printer again and check for the difference.

If the same behavior persists, try to install the following package and check any changes:

  • Turn the off "Stop" in the Apple menu?

The power button on my MacBook Pro mid-2009 no longer works. I accidentally closed my Mac and would not restart. After searching the Web, I finally managed to restart it short-circuited something inside the computer. I would like to disable "Shut Down" in the Apple menu, so he won't be stopped by chance. Is this possible? If so, how do you?

    Hello

It is possible, but by modifying the system files can be dangerous. First of all, make sure that you have a backup of your Mac.

All the desktop icons are missing, unable to create desktop shortcuts, without run command in the start menu... no info

If system restore is turned on and you can go back enough, restore the computer to an earlier date using Safe Mode.

Restart the computer and start typing the key F8, select Safe mode with command option. If you are prompted to select an operating system, use the arrow keys to select the right pair and press ENTER. Log in as administrator or with an account that has administrator credentials. At the command prompt, type % systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe, and then press ENTER. Follow the prompts to restore your computer to an earlier date.

Can someone please tell me how to get all the options on the start menu to close it has changed over the past week and shows just the icon arrow where I can choose only log off or lock and locking. to stop, I have to wait for th computer to disconnect and then when the screen saver appears click on the close button.

When I use to close before that I would have the standby key who showed during updates would be installed before the computer turns off. This has disappeared and now I only have a lock icon and the arrow which only gives me the option to log on to the wide or lock. all other options have disappeared for some reason that I'm not able to choose to change username, stop hibernate sleep etc.

  • Lag/slow loading icon in "Programs" in the Start Menu

Why should he wait a few seconds for the icons in all programs to load up in my menu start? I forced a rebuild of the cache of my icon, fresh win7 x 64 on AMD Phenom X 4 9950 4 GB RAM so no reason for this slow right?

It will be still much slower at any time rebuild you your icon cache: because rebuild the cache clears all the icons.  Then the next time, they should be displayed, the system must open each file in the menu start one by one and read the icon.  Because the hard disk is the slowest part of any computer, this causes a very significant delay.

The icon cache is also rebuilt (erased) when run cleaning disc and some other 3rd party systems cleaning.

It should be slower after any kind of reconstruction after the first screen, there should be a snapshot whenever you open the menu (unless you rebuild your new icon cache).

  • I don't have the desktop icons, task bar or the start menu. All I have is my wallpaper.

I think I'm done inadvertently the Explorer.exe process when trying to figure out which bogged down my laptop. I have now no start menu, no desktop icons, no task bar... nothing! The paper just painted. When I right click on the wallpaper I get nothing. I have no idea how to get that back. If I had not left my email up, I wouldn't even be able to access the internet!

    Hello.

You should be able to press Ctrl + SHIFT + ESC to open the Task Manager.
From there, click on file > new task (run...), then type "explorer.exe" in the dialog box and click on enter.
Of course, should explore back upward during restart as well.

  • Why is the Favorites icon is more in the Favorites menu bar in the 23.0.1 version

The icon was on the right side of the toolbar of bookmarks with the tag "bookmarks" beside him. In the 23.0.1, version it is moved to the right of the home page icon and the label "bookmarks" is no longer displayed. It seems that IE10.

The "actions" based on the location of the bookmarks toolbar button changed to Firefox 23.0. The new default location seems to be on the Navigation toolbar; For me, it was with a new profile to the right of the search bar and to the left of the "arrow" to download / download progress display button. When he is on the Navigation bar "Bookmarks" tab is not shown, but an arrow 'drop-mark' is here. As well as the Bookmarks button doesn't automatically move himself when the personal bar does not appear as with previous releases since Firefox 4.0.

You can move this button anywhere you wish through the Customize feature to the toolbars.
