Mixed versions of ESXi cluster

We started a project driver Nvidia GRID with our VDI. We have a cluster of three servers with two IBM x 3650 M3 and M4 3650 x. After having modernized our VDI and vCenter to 6.0 u1, we discovered that servers M3 had fallen out of the 6.0 compatibility matrix. Right now our ESXi are 5.5. I need a host of 6.0 to continue the project of GRID, so I wonder if I can upgrade to 6.0 u1 ESXi server and run the cluster in a mixed configuration of ESXi?

Only, we would need to upgrade the virtual desktop that use GRID for 11 hardware version. I am concerned of vMotion. I already know that virtual desktops to access the GPU GRID is vMotion, so not worried about that. However, I'm concerned by the servers being able to vMotion between 5.5 and 6.0.

Thank you!

If you are looking to vmotion of virtual machine between hosts 6.0 and 5.5, then this is a supported use case.

But make sure that the virtual machine running on 6.0 hardware 10 (do not upgrade the hardware version to 11 which is the compatible version to 6.0)

In addition, do not enable the new feature of 6.0 esxi on VM.

You can upgrade vmware tools to version 6.0 because the tools are completely interoperable across different version

BTW, when you upgrade a cluster of vsphere 5.5 to 6.0, during the upgrade process, some of the virtual machine will be 5.5 and some in 6.0 and you will transfer them through different version when you put them in maintenance mode. It is therefore fully supported configuration.

The processor affinity is available in the entire edition, but it will be disabled on a cluster of VMotion.

  • Compatible version of ESXi for PowerEdge 860?

Are you looking for my current configuration of the virtual machine to a re-usable, configuration of the VM and I try to be on the latest version of ESXi who will consider my PE 860, and if there is anything in particular, I have to do to make it work.

I found the custom Dell ESXi files but I don't know if I should use these versions or just stick with a version of VMware.

    Thank you.

ETA: PE 860 to the 1 x 2.4 GHz Xeon Dual Core and I'm only under a single SATA HDD inside SATA_0, can add another in a clean future.

    Hello johnnydotexe

We have not validated the 860 for any version of VMware. I just searched and found messages from customers installing up to ESXi 5.0. There is not much difference between 5.0 and 5.5 latest about hardware compatibility, so I don't see a reason why you cannot install 5.5.

I suggest using our ISO custom. Even if we do not support VMware on the 860 many pilots are used across multiple products, so there may be drivers for the 860 material available on our drive.

Since this is not a validated configuration I suggest you be aware, there will likely be some quirks, and it is not recommended to run configurations not supported in a production environment.

  • replication between different versions of ESXi vSphere

    Hi all

Is it possible to use replication between different versions of ESXi vSphere? the scenario is as follows.

    Source site:

    vCenter 6

    RS 6

    Replication Unit 6

    5.5 ESXi

    The target site:

    vCenter 6

    RS 6

    Replication Unit 6

    6 ESXi

I understand that vCenter, SRM and VRA must match and vSphere replication 6 is compatible with ESXi 5 upwards and it is the vSphere host in the source location that replicates on the VRA rather than a host of ESXi target so it should work, but I wanted a certain Yes/No.

    Thank you

    Definite yes.

  • Same version SRM between sites, but different versions of ESXi

Like many people, my recovery site is filled with older hardware. And now we have developed on an issue where ESXi hosts on the recovering site cannot be upgraded to the same version of ESXi as a protected site (protected site = 5.5 U2, recovery site = 5.1 U3).

The vCenter site recovery is the same as the vCenter in the protected site (5.5 U2), and the SRM on the two sites is the same (5.5).

Question: this should be OK, right? as long as the vCenter and RS versions on both sites are the same, I have different versions of the ESXi servers, without problem? (assuming that I keep an eye on the VMtools version and versions of VMS virtual material, so I do not use anything that is not supported on the recovering site)

    Thank you

    Hello

You can have different versions of ESXi server, but you should check if these versions are supported by the version of MRS who is 5.5 in your case.

SRM 5.5 does not manage ESXi 5.5 u2 and u3 5.1.  SRM 5.5.1 supports ESXi 5.5 u2 but it does not support ESXi 5.1 u3.

If can use SRM 5.5.1 and downgrade 5.1 to 5.1 u2 u3 which is supported.

BTW, vCenter version is 5.5 u2 is supported with MRS. 5.5.1.x.

  • Migration of virtual machines to vCD and again in a standard ESXi cluster itself?

We currently have a relatively small cluster of ESXi (5.0.0 1489271) which uses a dedicated installation vCenter (5.0.0 1300600) and an instance of vCD (vCD 5.1.2.1068441).  Our goal is to move the virtual machines running in this configuration to our standard ESXi clusters (5.5.0 1892794) supported by installation of different vCenter (5.5.0 1891313).

The instance of vCD seems to add additional parameters to the level of the virtual machine that prevents the VM of to be easily transferred out of the instance of vCD.  What we are looking for is a way to easily migrate these servers on and completely remove the vCD of the equation.  The only details around that we found cause downtime for exports out of vCD can be extended to reason the total amount of drive to the VM and VM level, which we really do not think it is an option to open a window of time to stop long enough to work through this process.

Did someone went down this road before?  We have approximately 120 virtual machines in the cluster vCD using about 52 TB of disk.

Maybe we're wrong understand something fundamental about the nature of migration of VMs on the vCD instance, but we have not been able to find many details on what options exist to make this move.  We have spoken several times with VMware support in this regard.  They mentioned a potential tool in the work within engineering migrate vCD to vCAC (which isn't really fall under our goal unless vCAC would then provide a clear path to return the virtual machines to a standard ESXi cluster).

Any suggestions or ideas are appreciated.

I am a colleague of GTC and wanted to just sent to our discussion of this topic with the help of VMware.  Basically, we should be able to Setup VMs in vCenter, outside of vCloud Director, pointing them to the same files VMDK and MAC then power off VM vCD and power on VM vCenter.

Severity of the request for assistance: 4 - low

Description of the request for assistance: we are looking for ways simple and less disruptive migrate VMS off vCloud Director and vCenter management.

We have the advantage of a single principle in vCloud, managed by a vCenter and the network configuration is simple with no VXLAN.

What are the problems with the realization of the following?

vCD 5.1 is managed by vCenter 5.0, the final result will move VMs in vCenter even

-Create a new virtual machine in vCenter that points to the same vmdk files as virtual machine in vCD you want to migrate, allocate same configurations of processor, memory, and network (we do not use the vCD with advanced networking)

-Turning off the virtual computer in vCD

-Once the vCD WHAT VM is off, power on VM in vCenter

We must ensure that the VM vCD never gets turned on again and then when we are completely finished with all migrations of VMS in vCenter we abandon vCD.

Of course there are details to help users migrate to how they use the vCD to vSphere vCenter client web interface or web interface.

    Entry date: 04/09/2014

Since the opening of the case, I had interviews with several members of VMware support staff and these additional points were added.

-Configure vCenter VM with the same vNIC driver MAC and like vCD VM vNIC

-Rename VMDK files to make for easier management, or if not renamed then detach from the propelled out of vCD VM

Prices (not storage vmotion) vmotion, DRS (Distributed Resource Scheduler) features available in ESXi cluster?

I thought that ESXi is a correct free download?

Yes and no. ESXi Hypervisor binaries are the same for all editions (free and paid). It depends only on the license key that you have what features are available and if you can add an instance of vCenter server host.

If you just want to test vSphere, you can sign up for a free 60-day trial (no required license key) during this period, all the features of the 'Business Plus' edition are available.

I need to download the old version of update 1 ESXi 4.0.

Why? Because is one of the software applications that we plan to use Host Media Processing (HMP of Dialogic) on one of the virtual machines and it has only been tested with this older version, and they specifically claim that the version of ESXi in their documentation as the only supported version.

  • Free version of ESXi 4.1 CPU with 8 cores

    Hello

I would like some advice on the question of whether the free version of ESXi 4.1 supports servers with 4 CPU core CPU 8, because I find some contradictory documents on some he said supports only 6 core CPU and not 8. Can someone advise or confirm.

I think the EULA may need to be clarified.  If we ignore free ESXi for awhile, this document - https://www.vmware.com/download/eula/multicore.html - suggests that it's OK to run vSphere Standard for example on processors with 12 cores.   I only give 2 CPUs per physical CPU licenses as each license would cover only 6 of the 12 hearts.  Here is the example that includes the document

    > Example: A customer has already purchased vSphere Enterprise license. Remember that each license of vSphere Enterprise can be deployed on a > processor with up to 6 cores. However, the customer now wants to use these licenses on a newly acquired server with processor with 12 cores. > The client has two options:

    > Upgrade from the company of vSphere vSphere Enterprise Plus license, which provides a right to 12 strands and extra GOLD

    > 2 two vSphere Enterprise licenses for each processor with 12 cores.

It would not appear that vSphere 6 basic editions are hard coded to ignore carrots on it 6 but rather you must just the correct license in place.  With ESXi free since you can register an unlimited number (99 I think?)  processors and in essense, you have enough licenses processors to double for each physical processor.  It would not be what they want and it can be "fixed" in the future, but I'm not sure it would be a EULA violation vSphere.  The doc covers products 'vSphere '.

    This affect which products VMware?

    > This strategy affects the VMware vSphere products i.e. vSphere Essentials, vSphere Essentials Plus, vSphere Standard, Enterprise vSphere, vSphere > advanced and vSphere Enterprise Plus

so maybe they need to clarify their position for free ESXi.
