  The laptop has Intel GM45 chipset and the chipset supports up to 8 GB of memory. This means that you can install 4 GB module in both memory slots. As you already wrote DDR2 800 MHz is the correct specification.

  Theoretically, each module with this specification will work, but I recommend the purchase of high quality of Kingston for example modules. I have good experiences with this brand :)

  Updating the BIOS is not necessary for the upgrade of RAM so you can keep the current version.

  As I know the update of the BIOS will not increase possibility of RAM and it depends on the chipset. According to specification for laptop, that your laptop can be upgraded up to 8 GB and no more than as long as the use of modules of memory 2x8GB will not work.

  If you have a 4 GB module inside just buy another with PA3918U-1M4G part number and you get max 8 GB of RAM in your machine.

  Above all Equium M40x can be upgraded to 2 GB of memory. You need to the MMAR DDR SO-DIMM modules with specification PC2700. You can use up to 1 GB in each of the slots.

  Furthermore, I checked the Web of Kingston site because it has Configurator memory. If you are looking for satellite M40x-189, you will get two compatible memory modules:
  KTT3311A/512 (512 MB SO-DIMM)
  KTT3311A / 1 G (1 GB SO DIMM)

  So in your case I would buy one or two of these modules because they seem to be compatible with your computer satellite phone. ;)

  I have a 320CDT Satellite with the latest BIOS (v8.00) and Windows 98 Second edition installed. There are 32MB memory base and a 32 MB module in the single expansion slot. If I change it to a plug-in 64 MB I see that 64 MB of total memory reported, not 96 as expected; the specification for the machine indicates that the admissible maximum memory is 160 MB (32 MB base + 128MB expansion). Does anyone know if there is a problem with the maximum memory size for this model and if there is a solution or workaround?   Satellite 320CDT supports an internal memory of 32 MB and a single slot can be used!
  You can improve it to max 96 MB (32 + 64 MB)
  I found a few old memory modules. You can use the modules SODIMM 144 pin EDO PA2043U 32 MB or 64 MB PA2044U
