Move bookmarks etc to new PC which direction set up Sync?

I have Firefox put in place just as I am it on my old PC. Now I have a new PC with Firefox and all move. I looked at the articles on Firefox Sync, but I am confused on how to specify the direction in which I want the data to be moved. Must set up Sync on the OLD PC first and then attach a new one, or set up on the NEW PC first etc. ?

I could be wrong on this, but my impression is that it may not matter that you set you up first.

To be on the safe side, I would be set up on the old pc first.

You can use the copy / paste command to copy your files from the external hard drive to the folders such as Documents, pictures, videos in Windows 7.

When you copy and paste a file, you make a copy of the original file that you can then modify independently of the original file. If you copy and paste a file to a different location on your computer, it's a good idea to give it a different name, so that you'll remember which file is new and which file is the original.

To copy and paste a file:

    1. Open the location that contains the file you want to copy.

    2. Right click on the file and then click on copy.

    3. Open the location where you want to store the copy.

    4. Right-click on an empty space within the location and then click on paste. The copy of the original file is now stored in the new location.

    5. Select multiple files or folders

There are several ways to select multiple files or folders.

      • To select a consecutive group of files or folders, click the first item, press on and hold down the SHIFT key and then click the last item.

      • To select multiple files or folders that are near each other, drag the mouse pointer to create a selection around the outside of all the items you want to include.

      • To select nonconsecutive files and folders, press on and hold down the CTRL key and then click each item you want to select.

      • To select all files or folders in a window, the tool bar, click on organize, and then click Select all. If you want to exclude one or more items of your choice, press on and hold down the Ctrl key and then click on the items.

Your Firefox data are stored in the profile folder. You can copy the contents of the old profile folder in the new.

  • If I install a newer version (38) of FF, it will allow me to import my passwords, bookmarks, etc.?

I'm in Italy, but need to FF in English. The shop that built my PC to install it in Italian.
Since I'm now on 37 FF, I thought I could just download 38 English and install it. But that's assuming, of course, that during installation, 38 FF will ask if I want to import my passwords, bookmarks etc. of 37 before overwriting.
BUT... I don't know he will ask and fear that 38 will overwrite 37, until I realize he won't ask.
(In research on language issues in FF, I discovered tools > Options > content > language, which I guess - now, it is set to EN - me 38 FF will fetch in English).

Hello FxFx, the language in the options option > content will report only to Web sites what is your preferred language.

You can switch from an Italian firefox 37.0.2 to a generation of 38.0 English by downloading the latest version from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ and install just on top of your current installation - this will not affect and keep all your data such as bookmarks or passwords automatically, because they are stored separately in your profile folder , which is independent of the version of firefox you are running...

  • How to create a default profile for all users of a computer under Windows 7/Vista for Firefox versions greater than 8? I would that all new users on a computer to get the same values by default, homepage, bookmarks, etc...

I found some help on older versions of Firefox, but I can't seem to find anything for the latest versions greater than 8. There must be a way to do this for imaging large scale.

Have you created a defaults\profile in the folder of the program Firefox (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\)?

All files in this folder will be moved into each newly created profile folder.

To give the prefs a default, it is best to do this via a mozilla.cfg file.

Use a mozilla.cfg file in the Firefox program folder to lock the prefs or specify default values.

Place a local file - settings.js in the defaults\pref folder where you will also find the channel - prefs.js to specify using mozilla.cfg file.

    pref("general.config.filename", "mozilla.cfg");
    pref("general.config.obscure_value", 0); // use this to disable the byte-shift

    See:

You can use these functions in mozilla.cfg:

defaultPref(); // set new default value
pref(); // set pref, but allow changes in current session
lockPref(); // lock pref, disallow changes

  • Need simple explanation - move iTunes library to new PC

I'm looking for a simple explanation of the functioning to the iTunes library to MOVE from one PC to another. The current/old computer will go far. KEY: need to keep notes of the song and playlists.  The last time I did I lost the scoring for thousands of songs and lost all the selections.

    Old computer is Windows 7

    New is Windows 10

Is there a software that will do this for me?

    THANKS FOR THE HELP!

    • Where appropriate, consolidate your library so that all media included in the library are stored in iTunes standard media folders
    • Copy the complete library (whether as a result of the default values of iTunes, this will be C:\Users\username\Music\iTunes) from the old PC to the location on the new PC
      • If the library is small, if would be possible to copy over a network or using a USB
      • for large libraries, use an external hard drive as an intermediate storage device
      • Although the Windows copy and paste standard functions ' should be enough, third-party utility (I use Terracopy), or the method described in the user tip of turingtest2 on the backup of your iTunes for Windows with SyncToy library, may be more resistant to errors possible/interruptions during the copy process
    • If you have already installed and launch iTunes on the new PC, you need to overwrite all the files/folders is already present in C:\Users\username\Music\iTunes (this implies that you haven't added all the new PC which is not present on the old media).
    • Now launch iTunes on the new PC - the method described above ensures that data from the old PC iTunes (which is where are stored all your playlists, ratings, etc.) is available on the new.
    • An additional advantage to do this correctly, is that the new PC has now a physical copy of the same logic of the old library, so all iDevices will see this 'the same' library and you can continue the synchronization operations without risk of deletion of the device.
  • my profile to update automatically when I add bookmarks etc.

I read on the profile and where to find it. It updates automatically every time that I add new bookmarks etc AND how should I back up my profile on a key whenever I have add bookmarks etc to the profile please. I just changed for Firefox of IE8.

    Thank you
    Pingu70

I know how to find my profile, it will automatically update each time that I add new bookmarks etc AND how should I back up my profile on a stick:

The files in your profile are updated When you close Firefox, and your backups/restores/renames/deletes of files must be made when Firefox is down. Once a day early morning when Firefox is running, your favorites are saved by Firefox in the bookmarkbackups folder.

You do not want to save your bookmarks, whenever you have changed the (at least I don't). You can create your own backup of your bookmarks to your USB drive at any time through Firefox and restore this backup at any time through Firefox perhaps half a minute to make either once you press the button.

What I really recommend that when Firefox is declining would backup not only your current profile, but all your Firefox profiles and that should fit on most USB sticks that you can buy today.

    Profile - backup:
You should support your Firefox profiles, there is not a lot of data, and you should be back up frequently. There is much more data to other applications in your Windows user library and you should be backup data there, too.

When you back up all your data to external hard drive (500 GB to 3 TB) user profiles Firefox would be included.

But it's about Firefox. For Firefox, a USB key would probably suffice to backup one or more profiles.

backup of your Firefox profiles (the following is all on one line)

    xcopy C:\Users\< user name>/d/h/y/c/q/s \AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\*.* g:\profiles\*.*

If you want to carry your bookmarks with refer you to them you would not use the backup .json because it is only for restoration with a complete replacement of your bookmarks. If you want something you can see elsewhere that you might want to put a file to bookmarks exported on your USB key as well.

Don't know if you know how to use XCOPY to a .bat file or not, but that's how I got all my backups made with applications not least not applications that use files running. The following will not help much if you are not familiar with them.

For those who may not know how to find their profile just type on: support support on the address bar, and then click the "Open folder containing" in the troubleshooting information page. If Firefox does not work, you may need to use other means.

  • I have upgraded to Windows 8. I had to download firefox. I have connected to my account, but my passwords, bookmarks, etc. are not there.

After that upgrade to Windows 8 FireFox wasn't on my computer so I downloaded it. After have downloaded you I've logged into my account but my password, bookmarks, etc. were not there. How to bring back my profile? I changed my folder view to include hidden files. The only file in the folder of my profile is xxxxx.default with the current date. I have my favorites on my iPad, but I'm afraid to synchronize for fear that it will overwrite the ipad with empty profile rather than the reverse. And I don't think that my passwords are on the Firefox ipad - are they? Help!

Hi belindawolfe, there is a file a high level called profiles.ini. After you have copied your old profile folder over to the new profile folder, you must add the name of the folder to profiles.ini in order to be able to use it. I think that there are other threads with advice on the best way to do it.

First, unplug your old computer of Firefox Sync, so you do not accidentally delete data synchronization, but yes, you should be good to go.
