Move your VirtualCenter SQL Server without a network, SAN, HA or DRS

Hi all!

I have several servers ESX w / their own storage, a VirtualCenter VM virtualized and a virtual SQL server server that contains its performance data.

I need to migrate from SQL server to a new host, and to make that (inside virtual center of) wo / SAN, HA and DRS, network I need to stop SQL server.  However, this brings me to the problem, when I stop the server SQL, VC, kicking me service accidents and impossible to migrate the virtual machine.

Is there an easy way to do this in VC?  If not, where can I find best practical instruction on the migration of a VM between ESX servers in VirtualCenter even manually?

Thank you!

Stop your vCenter Server Service, use VMware Converter to do a V2V. Turn off the VM SQL and 'copy' in its new destination. Power on the "new VM" and start your vCenter Service again, and then delete the "old" VM

  • The SRM database move to another SQL Server?

If I needed to move only the SRM database of there is already a SQL 2005 cluster to another SQL Server, it could be realized without a re - install the MRS?

    Thank you

Yes, you can make a backup and restore to the new DB or detach and re - join the new DB. From there, just repoint the DSN to point to the new SQL Server and all should be good. If I'm not mistaken, there is a SRMUser that is created in security roles in SQL that will have to be moved also.

  • Move the vCenters SQL Server to different hardware

I have two clusters.  An AMD and another is Intel.  We are trying to remove the blades from AMD, but I get to a point where I must pass the SQL VM that hosts the vCenter DB.

How would I be able to do it from vcenter will be down, because SQL server needs to be powered off to move from AMD to Intel? I guess I have to remove the inventory then just connect to a host of Intel directly and re - add inventory?

    Hi all

I want to migrate from MySQL DB to SQL Server without loss of data. Is this possible?

In general, it is possible to move easily between the embedded MySQL and more robust external MySQL, but moving between database types is generally accomplished by standing the new FMS next to existing and, if necessary, put a unifier in front of both.

  • ODI: Mapping SQL Server datetime field to Date ORACLE

    Hello

I tried map a datetime (SQL Server) field to a Date field in my intermediate Oracle DB table.

The format of the source (SQL Server) is 2014-08-12 15:04:48.927 and in mapping for the intermediate table, I use the function TO_TIMESTAMP (sql_field_name, 'YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS.ff')

When executing the interface, it fails with the error: ORA-01843: not one month valid

Is there an error in the conversion?

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Thank you.

    Hello

    Thanks for your help.

@Mahak VARCHAR2 conversion also did not work, kept getting is not not a month error invalid. In my view, that move data between SQL Server and Oracle there are some questions in the format and precision.

I have now resolved the issue. It worked by using the CONVERT (DATETIME, field_name) SQL Server function in the map and put it to run on the Source (a MS SQL Server DB) instead of the target (which is an Oracle DB).

  • SQL Server edition full for vCenter Server 6.0

    Hello

Just learn that vCenter 6.0 does not support SQL Server Express.

We intend to use SQL Server 2008R2 as the database of vCenter Server 6.

We would like to ask for your opinion if we should use the full 32-bit or 64-bit SQL Server Edition?  For SQL Server Express, 64 - Bit is used, I think that we need to use 64 bits one, is this correct?

    Your opinion is requested.

Just learn that vCenter 6.0 does not support SQL Server Express.

The Windows 6.0 vCenter dropped the integrated SQL Express, BUT instead, it comes with a SQL database vPostgres shipped to replace it with similar restrictions. You don't need to install your own SQL server if you're ok with these limits. See the following article:

vSphere 6 - clarify misinformation. VMware vSphere Blog - VMware Blogs

Databases are supported for installing windows SQL 2008 R2, 2012 and 2014, Oracle 11g and 12 c as well as the possibility of using an embedded database vPostgres on windows vPostgres is limited to 20 guests and 200 VMs. Upgrades where SQL express is installed will be converted to vPostgres. The vCenter Server Appliance supports the vPostgres shipped to full scale, the host of 1000 and 10,000 virtual computers and is the database recommended for vCenter server unit. Oracle 11g and c 12 external databases are also supported for this version, look for these to drop in the future releases.

It is also possible to keep an existing SQL Express DB when you perform an upgrade:

  • Virtual Center can run on SQL Server Express

Hi, I currently have Virtual Center running on SQL Server 2005 Standard.  I would like to move databases to SQL Server Express.  Virtual Center run on SQL Server Express?  Y at - there any restrictions that I can hit?  We run ESX 4.X and a few 50 VM environment.

Thanks in advance for your help,

    Terry

the limitation to Express is 5 guests and 50 VM.  However, the biggest concern may be the restriction of size of 4 GB of your DB.  May I ask why if you are already running on the standard 2005 would return you Express?

  • SQL Server (disabling the Balooning pilot?)

    Hello

I heard something about 'disable your balooning for your production SQL Server driver'?

Is this true? Should I do this? (My ESX Server has enough free memory, the server should not put any pressure on my sql servers)

is there some other best practices of the SQL 2005 server virtualization?

    Any help would be appreciated!

What's the point? It will serve only when it does not have enough available resources or when you set a lower limit on the amount of memory put into service. And even then, if you have uninstalled it the next step when there is not enough resources would be the vmkernel swap that always means a performance decrease. I prefer to have the operating system choose pages that share the VMkernel this randomly.

If you want to continue to do an article that explains how without uninstalling the driver here:

  • Installation of SQL Server for the virtual Center Server

    Hi all

We bought 16 x 2 for ESX server CPU licenses.  So, I will prepare a database of virtual server of the Management Center 16 guests. As SQL Server 2005 Express is installed during installation of Virtual Center Server but VMware is recommended for use only for 5 guests.

So I would like to prepare a database of SQL for VC server, please help me how to make the database to the virtual Center Server. Are there special tables, configuration, permissions. I have no experience with databases then how should I go with it. Is there a guide for it. The ESX Server installation guide explains only create ODBC connections.

Please help me with this I would be very obliged.

I know that the procedure is restrited 2 steps (1 and 2) on page 68, but you need to install and configure SQL Server for your business standard (I guess asking the C: or D: and data/newspapers on E :). I'm not going to explain better how to install SQL Server on a server. For the SQL Server database:

    • Step 1: you create a database storing the files on the right disk (with at least 30 GB) with a default database size to the size defined by the "Calculator" (value of + 15% on the line of your choice statistical level).

    • Step 2: On your Microsoft SQL Server, create a user of SQL Server database with the database rights of operator (DBO). The default database for the DBO User is that you defined in step 1. Make sure the database user has a role of sysadmin server or the role of database db_ownerfixed on the VirtualCenter database and the MSDB database. The role db_owner on the MSDB database is required for the installation and upgradeonly. This role can be removed after installation or upgrade process iscompleted.

The user must be created for your standard business as service account (password never expires) with a long and complex password.

Other steps in the document are for the ODBC connection.

Creating the tables is made during the installation of VC. Nothing to do. A characteristic is not to stop the SQL Server agent because some tasks are scheduled in the database to 'compact' statistics.

For the record, the database is upgraded when installing patches VC creating of new tables, updating of data type or...

  • SQL server with controller ParaVirtual

We are running sql server 2008 2008 uses iscsi initiator connected to drives for our readers to log files and database. It works very well for us, but we are implementing replication Zerto and move readers for vmdk files.

We went from 2 of our databases a bit less used and the disks are connected via a controller unique paravirtual for all 6 discs: OS, swap file, database, newspapers, TempDB, SysDB. Everything seems to work properly. We now seek to move our main SQL server that holds 90% of the business activity.

  • moving my SQL Server to another host (with vcenter database)

    Hi all

I am in progress to improve my environment at ESX4.0. Now I have to move my only SQL server VM to the new host, who is already on ESX4.0 level. My only SQL server hosts the vCenter as database. I don't have a vMotion.

To move my SQL vm, I need to turn it off and then migrate my ESX 4.0 host. The problem: when the SQL Server is disabled, I lose connectivity to the vCenter server and therefore cannot migrate the virtual computer to another host.

Is there a way to fix this, or is my only option to move the virtual machine in question off vCenter SQL database?

  • Developer SQL, SQL Server and the ampersand

    Hello

I am connected to a SQL Server database (2008) and has difficulties to get a query runs correctly in SQL Developer (3.1.07).

    Simplified example

    Select table_field
    table
    where table_field <>'This & That ';

    Expected results

    table_field
    Other stuff
    Other stuff
    Other stuff

    Actual results

    table_field
    Other stuff
    This & That
    This & That
    ....

I can't get SQL Developer to recognize as a literal ampersand &. I tried it out in many ways, but he still thinks it's a variable.

The query works exactly as expected in MS SQL Management Studio and Toad. Of course, I can just run it in one of these, but I would try to get this working with SQL Developer. Suggestions?

Please let me know if I can provide further information. Thank you.

    Hello

SQL worksheet to developers is designed for Oracle, but we allow you to execute instructions SQL Server and other databases Oracle not.
This can lead to some quirks, such as the one you met.

Oracle SQL * Plus uses and commercial for define substitution variables.
Oracle SQL Developer has implemented the same concept.
Unfortunately there is no sense when something is running on an Oracle database no.

To work around the problem, you can run the following SQL * Plus command in SQL Developer, before your query SQL Server.

  • How to send the SQL for SQL Server statement and return data without using database connectivity Kit?

Hi, I tried to figure out how to extract data from my SQL Server databases and reading messages and to do some tests with examples, I can get data connection type in my SQL server, but so far nothing helps.  Is it possible to get data from a SQL Server database without using the database connectivity Toolkit?  and if so, how?  are there whitepapers and/or examples of this?  So far, I can't find something that works.  Thank you.

Jesse - what is your reason for not using the database connectivity Toolkit? It is by far the best way to recover the data.
