Movement of the tool from Windows Update troubleshooting

If you have a problem with Windows Update, please note that the links to the updated Windows Diagnostic tool (the tool for troubleshooting Windows Update akas) have changed.

Can now access using the link below:

Troubleshoot Microsoft Windows Update:
https://support.Microsoft.com/en-us/GP/Windows-Update-issues/en-GB

The new direct link to the tool is:

http://go.Microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=231149

This isn't an official announcement from Microsoft. I'm just afraid that, with so many current users of the problems of updates, to spread the word widely as soon as possible.

Noel Paton recently posted on 'bad' go.microsoft.com links to old/obsolete versions of the tool of diagnosis of MGA. I tend to not display these links unless I tested just them. [FWIW http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=56062 is always good.]

Also, FWIW, KB836941 is since 26 Feb-16 - MIA here but Google Cache still has https://goo.gl/02hltP (dated April 12-16.)

Chances are that Microsoft will continue to "rearrange the chairs" in the coming months, especially for Win7 & old stuff.

  • KB2442962, KB982214 and KB2345886 updates fail in code 800b0100 and 8007065E. Upgrade system preparation tool does not resolve. Windows Update Troubleshooter does not solve.

Hello. I recently acquired a new computer with Windows 7 Home Premium x 64. At first startup, I ran Windows update. As usual, a large number of updates have been downloaded and installed. Reboot, Windows update run and failed with the failure of the code 800b0100 and 8007065E. By clicking on the error codes led to a suggestion that 800b0100 could be solved by downloading and running the "System Update Readiness Tool" (KB947821). The help text for 8007065E says nothing useful.

I have downloaded and run the tool preparation system update, but after that Windows Update has failed once again.

Deselecting all individual updates but I finally managed to get everything except three to install. The other three are KB2442962, KB982214 and KB2345886.

I ran the system update tool several times.

I ran the "Windows Update Troubleshooter". He noted that he has made no changes to the system.

I downloaded the updates individually and run them manually.

    They do not always succeed.

    Grateful for any suggestion.

    Hey, Marc P

Thanks a lot for your offer to help. If I had checked this thread earlier I would have taken you to this topic.

However after trying various other ineffective solutions proposed by MS supports (such as installation of downloads in 'safe mode', which produces the error message "this service cannot be started in safe mode") I ended up doing a reinstall instead of the BONE. That fixed it.

Thanks for all your attempts to help.

Yes, I'm familiar with your recent discussions on this particular computer as well as the fact that he gave to your son as a used computer. Be so familiar with the history of this computer, I feel confident in saying he was already infected when he gave your son.

I fear that the only way to get this computer secure and fully patched to Windows Update will be formatting the hard drive - and then do a clean install of Windows.

Since you don't have the disks that originally came with the computer (and assuming that the original owner would have given them to you when gave you the computer if there were), we must assume (or at least to cross our fingers and hope) that there is a hidden restore partition that could be used to return the computer to the condition it was before first it left the factory. I can assure you that can support Dell & will help you, if not directly through the Dell Community forum:http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514.aspx

    Follow the instructions below:

Personal data backup (which none should be considered 100% reliable at this point) then format the HARD disk and do a clean install of Windows.  Please note that a repair installation (upgrade AKA on-site) won't fix this!

You MUST uninstall the trial for free AND download/run the removal tool appropriate prior to installing the updates, Windows Service Packs or IE upgrades AND BEFORE installing your new anti-virus application (which will require WinXP SP3 must be installed).

    2. What are the failed updates?
3 have there been any changes made on the computer before the show?

I suggest you try the steps to solve the problem with the installation of printer.

    Method 1:
Run the Fixit and check if it helps.

    Method 2:
Put the computer in a clean boot state to see if there is a software conflict as the clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.
    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: After completing the steps in the clean boot troubleshooting, follow step 7 link to return the computer to a Normal startup mode.

    Method 3:
    Temporarily disable the security software.
    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/disable-antivirus-software

Note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you should not disable the antivirus software. If you do not disable temporarily to install other software, you must reactivate as soon as you are finished. If you are connected to the Internet or a network at the time the anti-virus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

    Method 4:
You can also manually install updates (KB number) by downloading from the Microsoft Download Center.

  • "Windows could not get a list of devices from windows update"

I've been looking for a solution for several weeks now. Many people seem to have the same problem. But no one has yet been able to solve the problem.

First of all, let me clarify the problem explicitly:

In the Add Printer Wizard: "Windows could not get a list of devices from windows update"

Specifically, the problem is that Windows Update *broken* in the Add Printer Wizard. (Windows Update, otherwise works fine. But not in the Add Printer Wizard.)

Find a workaround to add the printer, which mostly does not work what I have read, would be only to solve the secondary problem of the addition of this printer. Except, it would not solve the main problem which is Windows Update *broken* in the Add Printer Wizard.

    Details:

I have been setting up three new PC running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit. I had to add an old LaserJet 5if connected to a former print server. I created the IP Standard port, then clicked on the "Windows Update" button to update the list of printers. It worked on the first perfectly, as it has in the past with other computers to this place. Then I started to work on the other two at the same time. I'm lazy and started to perform several tasks such as installation of MS Office, Security Essentials (less than 10 units at this office, BTW), etc. while the Add Printer Wizard was updating the list of devices. One of these things, I can't remember which, required a reboot.

And that is where I am certain that things broke. Restart has occurred while the two computers are in the middle of the list of loading from Windows Update System. I not interrupted the first PC. But the other two were interrupted and now they can't get a current list of Windows Update.

I tried the FixIt tool at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 . He says he detects a problem and claims to have fixed. Except, it isn't - little matter how many times I run.

Ideally, the FixIt tool above must be updated or a new tool must be created by Microsoft to resolve this particular problem. Type of the error in any search engine, and you will see this question from several years back. It's happens often enough to justify the creation of Microsoft or update a FixIt tool.

    Any thoughts would be helpful.

I have exactly and that no ONE reads what you say or what other people say everywhere. Only the upgrade Assistant printer does not... The update of the Printer Wizard do not work. Windows Update works fine.

    Ronday,
You are right that if few people read what they respond to these forums. That's the kind of non-response, I found everywhere on the Internet about this issue. (The value of the community is sometimes over-rated, if you ask me). Apparently, using characters fat is not enough to focus on the fact that the issue is not with the printer compatibility since, as I said clearly A) this printer has installed fine several times in the past with the same OS and in the same office and B) that I clearly THE issue is that updated the list of devices , in the Printer Wizard, *Do NOT*!
However, I came across a suggestion on another site. I haven't had the chance to try it at the location of this particular customer - I'll do it later this month. Here is the link to the suggestion for you to try as well. Scroll to the end to ignore any non-response:

Hi, most likely caused by one installation failed (not the Wizard), you need to do a bit of detective work, lets first try the easy solution: -.

    HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\current version\installer\inprogress.
    3. click the inprogress key and note the name of the file contained on the
right to databasepath (must be .msi extension).
    4 rename inprogress oldinprogress.
    5. close the registry editor.
    6. open my computer.
    7. navigate to C:\Windows\Installer (Installer file is hidden by)
par_defaut, views folder check "show files and folders" also uncheck "Hide protected system files", do not forget to cancel it when you're done)) and rename the file noted in step 3.

-rename c:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution in c:\windows not worked

-using the subinacl has failed (interesting subinacl has me some registry keys cannot be changed: access denied)

-J' have frees as much space as possible, with as much as 5 GB free before you download sp1 from windows update

-J' tried to stop my firewall and antivirus and even windows defender to not available.

The following is a typical c:\windows\softwaredistribution\reportingevents.log line:

    01:58:15:055 2011-02-23 + 0100 1 161 101 {E308C4CB-8026-4C9F-8F81-067D4F3A4966} {9CAA0B4A-025E-4531-B969-AA268F32D86F} 101 80070005 AutomaticUpdatesWuApp content failure download error: download failed.

My system is a windows 7 64 bit, up-to-date business, I had a few problems with windows update before but nothing I could solve not like this (I have my old reportingevents.log however if this can help you to help me).

Thank you in advance for your help!
