  OK, I found the answer. It was a hard reset. Just hold the Start button for 20 seconds (or until it no longer flashes) then wait a bit and you can restart the laptop.

  Battery re-gauge it's self when starting back from an engine out of State. An accurate reading of the battery can take up to 5 minutes.

• Windows XP SP3: Hang all night @ "Windows is shutting down"... "Start button / stop is my only option?

  I don't know where else to ask this... been going from one site to the other, books, etc., for hours looking for titles of threads that fit, but always leave out this something... medium or average power down.  do not use the power button, except if no other option out there.

  When I left my pc last night, everything seemed fine.  I decided to leave it on and not yet started to disconnect, etc..  Not sure if there was anything during the night (update?) which requires a reboot, but, when I'm happened to pc this morning it was hanging at the "Windows is shutting down" screen... "Windows and continued so for a few hours I tried to understand.

  This happened to me for the first time last week.  I don't have another source to the internet at the time, so I have 'given' and ended up using the power button.  I rebooted and immediately stopped to see if it would happen again, but everything was fine.  (Knew I should have troubleshooted!) The pc seemed so far.

  I read a number of suggestions to solve problems in other posts, but they all begin with the assumption that the pc is in a State of "exploitable".

  Step # 1 is need now is my only option to turn off, forcing a stop down with the power button?

  I'm going batty at this stage.  Any guidance appreciated.

  Yesterday, I bought the Z5 and if I hold down the power button, my ringtone started playing.  If I pressed again, it will start playing again on the other ring and my only option is to use the key to toggle to turn off the sound, but when I turn the volume to the top it will still play so my only option to stop it is to restart.  It is whenever I have press and hold the power button.

  1. Download version 9 or 10 of the Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI) driver.
     • Navigate to HP Software and Driver Downloads site (http://www8.hp.com/us/en/drivers.html) to find the last pilot approved for your model.  Filtrer filter by version, select Microsoft Windows 8.1 on the menu drop-down.  Find the download in the category 'Driver-Chipset'  If a pilot of MEI with a version from 9 or 10 number is listed, download.  [9.5.24.1790 version 1.5 M (http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp66001-66500/sp66228.exe) works for most models.]
     • If a pilot of MEI with a version from 9 or 10 number is NOT listed, download the driver appropriate directly from Intel (https://downloadcenter.intel.com/search?keyword=intel+management+engine).  [9.5.24.1790 version 1.5 M (https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/23091/Intel-ME-9-Management-Engine-Driver-for-Intel-NUC) works for most models.]
  2. Download the Package of troubleshooting Windows 10 "show or hide updates" (http://download.microsoft.com/download/F/2/2/F22D5FDB-59CD-4275-8C95-1BE17BF70B21/wushowhide.diagcab).
  3. Change the Windows Update Services automatic (delayed start) parameter to the manual.
     • In Control Panel, select administrative tools, and open Services.
     • Go to Windows Update and double-click it to view its properties.
     • Click on stop to stop the service to run.
     • Change the Startup Type to manual, and then click OK.
  4. Install version 9 or 10 of the Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI) driver.  If you receive a warning dialog box about the replacement of a newer version of the software, accept it.
     • NOTE: You have NO need to uninstall version 11 before installing version 9 or 10.  The presence of a version of the driver is required to 'upgrade' (or demote in this case).
  5. Run the Windows 10 Troubleshooting Package 'Show or hide updates' and hide the updates of the Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI) driver.  (This will block your system automatically reinstall or display of updates for version 11 of the pilot).
  6. Change back the setting of Windows Update Services to manual automatic (delayed start).
  7. Restart your computer.
  8. Rejoice!  You can finally sleep and stop again.

  I had a problem where my printer would not prevent printing, even though I cancelled it.  I watched and followed these instructions.

  From the desktop, hold down the Windows key and press R.  In the run window, type services.msc and press to enter.  Scroll down to the print spooler service, right click and select Properties, then click the Stop button.  Now search for C:\Windows\System32\Spool\PRINTERS, then delete the work inside this folder - you may need to click a command prompt to get the authority to open the PRINTERS folder.

  Restart the computer and you should find that the documents have been deleted.

  I didn't know that one to remove, so I deleted everything in the folder.  Now, my printer prints, but whenever I try to scan something, my power button flashes and it won't scan.   Help, please!

  My Toshiba Qosmio f15-av201 does not turn when you push the power button, even if the lights of ac adapter & battery are both on (on). Indeed, the yellow light that is supposed to turn on the power button when the laptop is turned off does not appear. The laptop was recently dismantled (open) to clean the fans, who made the famous monstrous noise which toshiba qosmios are apparently well known for.
  Everything seems to be connected correctly in its correct place. Nothing seems to be damaged. So, I have no idea where I can get out of here. Pending issue.
