MPG video plays but no sound - in Media Player 12

I have files s.o. that play video, but with sound in my new Windows 7 PC with wmp 12.  Strange thing is that files play without this problem in Windows Media Center and in the Sony Vegas Studio software I have installed.  DVD play so I know that I have a DVD codec.

While I have workarounds, it's frustrating.  How can I have it working fine in my previous machines and not in the more recent and Win7 and wmp12?

Hi Scphoto,

(a) who is the manufacturer of the audio device?
(b) only update you the latest audio drivers on your computer?

Download the latest codec from the Microsoft Web site and search for the issue. Now, you download the latest codec for media player from the Microsoft Web site and install it on your computer, to visit the link below.

For more information on the types of files supported by Windows Media Player, you can also view the following link: information on the types of media files that supports Windows Media Player

If it still does not work, try re-installing the driver of sound card as below:

Reinstall the driver

==============

1. click the Start button, type "devmgmt.msc" (without the quotes) in the search box and press ENTER.

2. double-click to develop of "audio, video, and game controllers.

3. right click your sound card, and then click on uninstall.

4. check the box "delete the software driver for this device", click OK.

    Hello Jorstar1,

Thank you for your message.  Windows Media Player 11 supports .avi, but compression can dictate whether he will play or not.  This is very probably a Codec issue, you can perform a websearch for a Codec that will play any avi compression.

  • video player has sound on movie maker, but not on the media player, why?

Just got some video files that have been created using the DV 48 kHz PCM codec by a third party for audio.  In Windows Movie Maker I can see and and here the audio.  Media Player will not open the file.  Pinnacle will allow me to have the video but not the audio.  All of the suggestions.

    Hello
    1. What is the file extension for the video files you are trying to play in Windows Media Player?
    2. the other videos and music properly in Windows Media Player?
You may need to install codecs appropriate to read the types of specific files in question. You can check with the party who created videos to find out what codecs may be required and where you could get those.

  • DVD video disc play is not in Windows Media Player, possible decoder problem

A DVD was made product with a video camera of the dance show to my child. However, the dvd on my hp Pavilion 772n burner will not play it. The operating system is XP and when I try to play the DVD in Windows Media Player, I get a message "...". compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer. What should I do to play the dvd on the pc?

On XP you must install software that can play DVDs. Both Vista and Windows 7 that include by default.

Here is a (quite old) Microsoft article describing what you see: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/expert/bridgman02april15.mspx

On XP, I used to use the card nVidia PureVideo Decoder for playback DVD with Media Player. It seems to still be available, but is chargable:http://www.nvidia.com/object/dvd_decoder.html

When I try to play the file, WMP shows error then update says "video codec".

How then can I get this update for the video codec?

    Thank you, Michael Phelps 907

    Hi Mike,.

an .asx file is not a media file. It is a file that contains a pointer to a content online. So if you are unable to read a .asx file and are able to play other files using Windows Media Player so the best thing is to open the .asx, a Notepad file. When you open the .asx using Notepad, you will see a link that starts by http: and so on. Please copy this link and go to Windows Media Player. On the Windows Media Player window, press the Alt key on the keyboard and click file and Open url. Paste the link and check if Windows Media Player is able to open the link. If she opens the link this is a problem with the formatting of the .asx file and if it does not open the link then it is a problem with the server online of the .asx file. It could be that it is deleted from the server.
