• I'd hate for the Mrs to say "I told you so."

  I recently had to reinstall xp home.  When I had finished I was somehow as the administrator, which is fine.  However, the files in my old folders under a different user name are "access denied" which is not very well.  After finishing of reistalling xp, I also have a slave drive that is not recognized.  As it is not there.  I am an older guy (78) and I really don't want to tell the Mrs.that that I messed up this somehow.  If no solution to this problem would be greatly appreciated.  I'd hate for the Mrs to say "I told you so."

  The answer you gave me (on taking possession of the files) did the trick, thank you very much. I now have my old files in return.  The response of the slave drive does not recognize the drive as being there at all.  He was not on the list of the dives that came.  Have suggestions?

  About your old records where you are getting "Access denied", you need to "Take Ownership" of these files and folders:

  On the slave drive, check if appears in disk management:
  Start-> Run-> "diskmgmt.msc".

  If you see there, try right-clicking on it and assigning a drive letter (change the drive letter and paths).

• Long distance vmotion and cross-vcenter vmotion are incompatible, with MRS?

  We plan our updates of 5.5 to 6.0. Two sites have involved SRM. We would like to be able to deploy to make long distance and cross-vCenter vMotion possible in the future. However it seems that these may be incompatible with MRS.

  Cross-vCenter vMotion requires enhanced link mode. Improved link mode requires the vCenters using the same PSC. A dependency between the protected site and recovery site that would be created by putting the two SRM vCenters in bound mode is a non-starter. You must be able to connect to your vCenter site recovery if the protected site is swept away by a tornado.

  The answer is maybe; Cross-vCenter vMotion is not compatible with SRM unless you create the deployment model with PSC servers redundant load balancing. Locate a CFP that is geographically separated from the protected site. Even in this scenario, it is clear to me if you would have to re-pointer the vCenter site disaster recovery. Again, I think that increased vMotion requires literally the 2 vCenters to be directed to the * same * PSC, CSP not only in the same SSO domain.

  I have a box to open with VMware and I'll share the results if it is useful. The two protected site site and recovery use our company Active Directory as an identity source, but I don't think it will help us if we are in bound mode and lose a PSC.

  Well, the weakness of my logic is in bound mode extended vCenters must point to the * same * PSC.  At least in SRM 6.1 there is some good news here.

• If anyone can help with MRS implemented

  I'm trying to implement a SRM 5.5 environment and I'm having some problems:

  The production site is set up with VC and SRM installed and worked.

  When I connect now although I can't connect to the VC. (this is a timeout error and I have reset the timeout in the registry so that this problem can be solved)

  On the production site, I installed the VC and SRM.

  But trying to start VC once again, I get the attached error and event log indicates the error.

  Another problem is that after installing SRM on the reocvery site, I can't download and install SRM of the plug in Manager.

  The error states that "he cannot connect to the vsphere client.

  Any ideas on this would be appreciated.

  On the first problem, it seems that vCenter cannot connect to its database and therefore cannot start. Things to check:

  1. have you installed VC and SRM on the same machine

  2. have you created a separate for MRS database if you use a shared database server?

  I was watching my MRS a Setup today and found the services had ceased.

  I tried to start the service and I see these errors.

  We found the problem, the MRS on the primary side server had problems connecting to the DB server and the remote SRM was not able to access on the primary side.

• Cannot migrate the MRS server to the data store different

  Our SRM server is a virtual machine.  I need to pass the different VM SRM to a data store, but when I do a migration, it allows me to choose the data store, but then I get an error

  I had solved it.  I tried to stop the SRM server, but I couldn't move it yet.  I found myself by opening a ticket with VMWare.  They come back with a 2008957 knowledge base article.  Although this article does not reference the same exact error, the workaround solution provided (remove from the VCenter inventory, browse the data store and make a 'add to inventory' on the VMX file) seems to have taken care of the issue

• Relocate DC using MRS?

  Hi people,

  Currently, my company has 2 data centers. One in New York and one in MY. A decision was made to close the data center of MY and I was instructed to get the virtual environment moves on the DC to NY. Some time, I would like to just physically move the ESXI hosts via UPS , the other decision that was made was to add new hosts esxi for the DC to NY. We will be upgrading the liaison network between the two sites.

  
  My first thought and maybe a bad one, was to use the converter and try to V2V from one domain controller to another. Now, I wonder if perhaps SRM can do this? I know that is not the purpose of SRM, then perhaps that my hypothesis is far fetched. If MRS can be used, just can it with the host replication? I don't know if the array based replication is an option yet.

  If I'm missing something and there is an easier way, please enlighten me

  Actually from vSphere 5.1, replication of vSphere SRM functionality was broken off SRM and is now provided with vSphere (all except Essentials license levels) as a stand-alone feature.  So, Yes, marknashe pouvez use 5.1 replication of vSphere functionality (assuming you are using vSphere 5.1?).   He works under the control of a single virtual circuit and does not need 2 VC (one on each site) as is the case with MRS. What is missing from this approach is automation for the migration process, the migration speed and a test feature (but maybe it's not important in this particular circumstance), however it does not cost anything and is a much better solution than V2V - ing your VMS, because downtime will be considerably reduced (VMs must be down to the final judgment & incremental synchronization).

  Second, the planned migration of SRM workflow is designed to meet for exactly this datacenter migration use case.  Several of my clients have used it for exactly that.   Initially, VMware didn't want RS to make use of, but it turns out that about 1/3 of SRM clients exactly what were doing anyway.  So now, VMware has blessed this particular use case with its own workflow.  In fact, it's exactly as a failover, except priority #1 is the integrity of the data; If there is no problem in the case of virtual machines on the live site or if there are final data synchronization (assuming async) then the workflow paused to allow the issue to be addressed before proceeding.

  Invest in RS is useful if you plan to operate in the future for DR automation... If not then vSphere 5.1 replication might be good enough.

• NEW MRS. 5.1 with NETAPP SRA 2.0.1 get the error allowing matched table.

  I tried to install VMWare SRM 5.1 with netapp 8.1.2 with netapp SRA 2.0.1 Simulator.

  I created two sites and synchronous sites and installed MRS. After that added two sites and tables. The sra has successfully added to these two sites. But when I tried to allow the tables associated with, I am getting error on the DR sra as follows.

  SRA command 'discoverDevices' failed. SAN or NAS device not found

  Make sure that the SAN device is configured and mapped to a Group of ostype vmware and NAS device is configured and exported with the rules of the rw.

  I have check the logfile DR sra, it list due to error.

  We must protect a production site that vSphere 5.0 as a virtualization infrastructure (very tres peu little VMS, say that 10 to 20).

  Let's get vSphere 5.1 (for the recovery site) and 5.1 SRM (both, of course).

  We are planning to use replication based on the Bay (ABR).

  Now, we wonder how this situation can carry some problems or limitations.

  For example, it must take into account the fact that, to the protection of the Site, all virtual machines are of type 8. So, can't they be upgraded to version 9 for backward compatibility with vSphere 5.0, you did?

  To all those who are already working in a similar situation?
  Any advice or suggestions are welcome.

  vCenter and MRS. versions must be the same on both sites. Guests can be 5.0 or older still.

  No problem to have hosts of your DR site to the more recent version than the protected site. Just do not upgrade the hardware version of your virtual machines (to version 9) after the failover, or you will not be able to failback.

• What happens if you're underlicensed for MRS.

  So I'm a consultant, and I just finished a SRM installation for a client who still uses the old by proc license model, which has two licenses for more that he needs.

  He asked me 'what happens to my existing configuration, if I add a 4 socket to the cluster server, it would break everything and if not, he would break, which would be protected, which would not be.  If I had a disaster which could I see any more, anything / any thing/nothing? »

  If anyone knows the effect of hitting SRM licensing limits in each CPU model your info would be thank you very much.

  SRM 4.1 if you use a proc license so if you try to protect a virtual machine on a host which until now has NOT hosted any other protected the computer virtual hosting will have been allocated MRS. keys... SO... when you are trying to protect a virtual machine on that host THAT SRM will try to assign the exact number of keys per-proc to the host. If you have not enough keys to allow fully all procs on the host, the task will succeed, but from that point on the client will be harassed by SRM (event generation in vCenter) permanently, to remind them that they are now in the violtation of the license and need to allocate more keys.

  If you had the same scenario but they key in use were eval keys NOT buying keys then when the eval expires his game more than you would NOT be able to protect ANY more VM and you would again be harassing messages to tell that you are now in violation of the EULA. Note If your EVAL key expires in production it's a BIG problem if you have 'forgotten' to buy a real key because we will also prevent failovers occur.

  According to the MIS Program administration guide, you must be administrator to install SRM.

  In addition, my experience on Windows 2008 R2, you must click on the installer and choose "Run as Administrator", otherwise intallation process will be blocked.

  I know that the most obvious, and I was able to get the answers below.

  (1) you have two sites prod & dr (YES)

  (2) you have two environment vSphere, including vcenter servers in both places?  (YES)

  (3) do you have licenses Aat sites (YES)

  (4) what type of SAN?  (NetApp 3240 / 3140)

  (5) is the SAN replication configuration? (SNAP, MIRROR)

  (6) what is the speed of connection between the two sites?     (100 MB)

  (7) you bought licenses SRM?    (VC - SRM - 25VM - C VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager (1) - license - 25)

  What else do I need to ask to make sure that they have everything in place for a deployment of MRS?

  Go to the section of NetApp and find the table with appropriate SRM version, Protocol and check if your storage space is listed.

  I have no knowledge of NetApp berries, but I see entries for tables V31xx and FAS31xx. This suggests that your tables is supported. Make sure that you run version ONTAP support.

  Does anyone know if the latest EMC MirrorView SRA has been certified for MRS 4.1? I checked the release notes on powerlink and there is no mention of MRS. 4.1, 4.0 only.
