mSATA SSD as cache

Hi, guys.

I'm debating getting a mSATA SSD. Is it possible to to use as a cache for the hard drive, rather than as a boot device, a concept similar to Intel's SRT? What software does take?

Caching is read-only, but reduces the beating disk significantly at startup and when congested.

ROMEX has FancyCache which provides the full read/write caching:

I do not trust caching of the Scriptures, good things.

    Hi all

I intend to buy an SSD mSATA disc to my desire, because I want to improve the response time at the opening of some programs, improve the General performance of the operating system and to access files faster to big (read and write).

I searched several readers mSATA SSD in the Web and I chose a P830 Series128GB mSATA SSD Samsung miniPCI-E disk (SATA III 6 GB/s, read 500 MB/s, writing of 400 MB/s).

But I'm asking about what might be the best option to use the SSD mSATA so suitable as a primary drive (operating system installation and leaving 1 TB of HARD drive for storage and applications) or use it as a cache to improve overall performance.

I do not envy for IE play or video editing, but I work with VMWare Workstation, and most of the time I need to use about 2 or 3 VM at the same time (sometimes during the recovery of a virtual Suspension of machine it take a long time, the virtual disks sizes about 40 GB). Another use for my desire is to play movies/series HD / 3D 0 and mirrored them for my Smart TV (via Miracast)

I read something on Intel Smart Response Technology (SRT) and I heard some benefits for use with SSDS as cache memory but I am still confused the best option.

Any suggestions you may have? It might be useful for me!

    Kind regards

    Hello @cchoiz ,

    Welcome to the HP Forums!

I understand that you have questions about the installation of your mSATA SSD.

The mSATA slot is designed to only be used as a disk cache. You may experience problems starting in the mSATA SSD as drive. For this reason, I recommend to use it in its configuration provided; as a cache drive.

The decision is entirely at you in the end. If you are able to configure the BIOS to use the mSATA as the main drive, this will help improve your system performance in addition to using it as a cache drive, especially if there is enough space to install your VMWare on the mSATA SSD after you have installed the operating system. Use it as a main drive will also increase the life expectancy of the SSD.

I can only offer you my personal and no suggestions 'official response HP' in this regard. As previously mentioned, it is entirely up to you.

Hopfully, this helps at least a little.

  • Envy 15-j051sa mSata SSD Cache TS

Envy TS 15-j051sa mSata SSD Cache for the 1 TB 5400 HGST HTS541010A9E680.

The manual States "Support for the SSD drive 24-GB mSATA (not available on computer models equipped with system - 16834 memory or 12288-Mo)". As I have all the conditions, Intel processor, 8 GB of ram, the question is can I just install it and everything works as if by magic?

Or what I need to do anything about it, or to perform any installation? I noticed Intel RST is running and that the system is working normally.

Any help or experience would be helpful (apart from the disk of 1 TB of pit and replace it with a large SSD!).

    Thank you.

OK, for someone else to end up here

    It worked for me:

    • Bought a 24 GB SSD mSata off eBay (very cheap).
    • Make sure that it is the type of partition MBR (I used an external box with Mini PCI-E to SATA 22Pin mSATA).
    • Make sure that the Intel Rapid Start technology is disabled in the Bios. (Appears only if the mSata is installed).
    • Windows 8 (.1) boot in SafeMode (this is where I'm wrong).
    • Run the Intel Rapid Storage Technology-> Performance-> activate acceleration.
    • Reset (it works!)
    • Activate the technology Intel Rapid boot in the BIOS (I don't know if it improves things, seems to work OK without him)

A start power button to start screen for ready office is 17-18 seconds. Note that I have several services running SQL 2008 R2 Server and all the HP utilities installed as new.

  • Satellite U940 - 11 d - 32 GB mSATA SSD use

    Hello world

I bought the week last Toshiba U940 - 11 d and I would replace the drive HARD 750 GB with 120 GB SSD. I have a question. I would like to install Windows 8 in SSD 120 GB drive and use another DDD which is mSATA for swap or my documents. Is this possible?

What can I do for my application? Can I use 32 GB mSATA as normal SSD SSD or I can use only to the cache?

    Best regards.

    > I have a question. I would like to install Windows 8 in SSD 120 GB drive and use another DDD which is mSATA for swap or my documents. Is this possible?

It would be possible if the system of Windows 8 would recognize the mSATA 32 GB as an additional drive. I m not 100% sure of this, but I guess only in case this is not possible, you could use this drive for caching mSATA SSD.

  • as additional storage mSATA SSD

    Hi all

    I have a touchsmart Envy 15-j003ed E4A07EA #ABH with a 4700mq I7, HP mainboard 1963.

The laptop came with a rather slow disk 5400 RPM. I changed this to a Kingston Hyper X 120 GB SSD sata 3. Which works very well. However, I would like to have some more space on board. Also only 4 GB of ram is installed I would spend it.  Related to it have 3 questions:

    (1) can I put a 120 GB or more in the slot msata SSD and use it as an extra hard drive? Not as a cache or almost...

    (2) or that it will be fast to do the startup disk msata ssd and use my current SSD storage?

    3) associated with the RAM, the specs give 1600 mhz speed, but the site of Kingston gives 1866 mhz as on option for the replacement, I use 1866 mhz?

Thank you very much in advance for your answer!

Yes, you can install a card from the WSSD in the slot mSATA for additional storage, but if you think that you can pick up just a larger SSD standard for less money extra. mSSDs have not yet appreciated the fall of wholesale prices we are seeing on 2.5-inch SSD. The WSSD cannot be a boot disc if you also have a standard 2.5-inch drive in the machine, which would be faster is a bit questionable. If possible, a WSSD would be a bit faster, but both are fast, it isn't a big deal.

    Here is the Service Manual:

    Manual

See page 44 for instructions of the WSSD.

The memory just be sure you get 1.35 volts or DDR3L memory. The manual says that it runs at 1600 mhz, so if you install the variety of 1866 he will just downclock.

  • W540 mSATA SSD as data along SSD into the main slot drive

Can I just install an mSATA SSD along my main SSD in W530 to use the old as data storage? He will see it not as a single cache? Thank you

ExpressCache is something that must be put in place.

By default the mSATA SSD is just storage.

When you put it in, it is not formatted and does not appear in my computer, so you must go to disk management to format it in NTFS so it appears.

  • mSATA SSD to Y480

I have a Y480 and I would like to add an mSATA SSD.

According to the 128 GB of Crucial m4 mSATA reader is not compatible with the Y480:

    http://www.crucial.com/store/partspecs.aspx?IModule=CT128M4SSD3

I also watched the 80 GB drive mSATA Intel:

    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/796905-reg/Intel_SSDMAEMC080G2C1_2_5_mSATA_MLC_310.html

who is 4.85 mm thick against 3.6 to 3.8 mm for some other devices. I'm afraid that Intel may not match.

    Question 1:

What mSATA discs are known to work with the Y480?

    Question 2:

I want to do the new SSD my system disk. So no worries with special BIOS need not required to use the SSD as drive caching.

Lean towards performing a clean Windows Installer using a generic Windows 7 ISO of Digital River (against the existing HARD drive cloning). Assuming that this will require some messing around with drivers and let me without the Lenovo tools, like the Onekey Recovery, I have not much to care for and would be happy to jettison.

Everyone thinks it's a bad idea or have any useful advice?

In the end, I installed a Crucial M4 mSATA reader:

    http://www.crucial.com/store/partspecs.aspx?IModule=CT128M4SSD3

    It works very well!

  • ProBook 6470b: mSATA SSD in a Probook 6470 b

    Hey

I just want to tell you is possble to install an mSATA SSD in a HP Probook 6470b. While I don't see a present pci slot which can be adapted for an mSATA ssd, I don't want to face any questions that he might not be guilty or bios regonise the reader, etc.. My idea is to have the mSATA SDS which will serve as my boot device and have a 1 TB or 2 TB 2.5' HDD for data. Right now I use a samsung 840 EVO SSD 2.5' as my boot drive.

    Kind regards

    Nick

Here's what it says in the Manual:

Flash module 24 GB of cache mSATA Intel (Intel Smart Response Technology (SRT), not available on computer models equipped with WWAN or SSD)

So yes, you can insert a disc of the WSSD in the pci-e slot you see. However, it is designed only to be used as cache acceleration and not as a main boot drive. This means that it will be bootable, but only as long as a regular SATA HDD or SSD is not present. It is the oldest mSATA material used with the Intel Core processors 3rd generation on business models and processors of gen 4th on consumption patterns. Later models can use the slot of the WSSD to boot, but not yours without significant configuration involving a bootloader installed on the SATA drive.

  • EliteBook 8760w: can I put my EliteBook 8760w with an mSATA SSD hard drive using the slot mSATA

I wonder if it should be possible to use an mSATA SSD by installing it in the slot mSATA?

    Product number: LG673EA #AK8 (EliteBook 8760w)

I inserted an mSATA SSD and it fits, but after booting, the computer gives the following message:

    No wireless module supported

The system has detected the wireless installed in the system module is not supported and disabled.

    WWAN Module ID (703)

    I hope it's just a matter of configuration/drivers, etc...

No, it's a physical barrier. Is the accommodation that you turn the player mSATA in p.50 indicated on the manual here? :

    Repair manuals

This port is a card WWAN (cellular modem) only. Your laptop is the Intel Core 2d era generation and utilization of disks mSATA even for cache acceleration did not really catch up to the 3rd generation. The circuits to see and make use of the mSATA drive is simply not present in this laptop. I'm sorry.

  • HP Pavilion DM4 - 3002TX Beats Edition supports mSata SSD 128 GB?

    Hello

I want to install a SSD 128 GB mSata in my HP Pavilion DM4 with 1 TB of HDD.

I already read the document "HP Pavilion dm4 Entertainment PC Maintenance and Service Guide"

It is said 'Supports a 32 GB mSATA SSD' and «a 20 GB mSATA SSD»

and when I read on combination mSata SSD with HDD.

"Support either a 750 GB, 5400 RPM, 9.5 mm hard drive + 20 GB mSATA SSD drive
configuration combination or a 500 GB, hard drive 7200 RPM, 9.5 mm + 20 GB mSATA solidstate
    combination drive configuration "

the document does not mix with 1 TB HARD drive.

The laptop supports SSDS this size and combination with 1 TB of HARD drive?

    Thank you

Yes it supports. See page 44 of this manual:

    Repair manuals

Check the service bay to be sure, you have the slot depicted on page 44.

The usefulness of the drive cache mSATA also depends on how much RAM you have, but I guess you have the 4 original concerts or at least no more than 8. Buy a 32 gig WSSD and install it. Restart the computer and let Windows load a driver. Now open the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Console. Go to the performance tab and activate the acceleration. You will be able to choose how many the mSATA to use for acceleration and you can so use it all because that anything left over will not do much good. Restart once or twice to leave the files to migrate the mSATA reader, you should notice a lot, a lot more quick time startup and better performance in general. There is no other practical use for the reader of the WSSD as an accelration cache. It is not really possible to use it as a boot drive, but install the accelerator cache is well worth.

Where do you live? All over the country. We can help you find the drive of the WSSD.

  • HP ENVY 15 notebook PC TS: mSATA SSD compatibility

Hello!  I was wondering if my laptop is mSATA compatible III for my mSATA SSD slot

I am installing a new mSATA and the manual says (page5) laptop computer supports up to 24 G only, so does this mean I can't add more than 24 G?

is there any recommendation for what mSATA module which can I buy?

My product name: laptop HP ENVY 15 TS

    My product number: J1Y24EA #ABU

Any help will be very appreciated!  Thank you!

Hello! Well here's how it goes

The mSATA Slot is only used for as acceleration for A HDD Cache for better system Performance for anything else however you could reformat it for storage if you want, but 24GO is not that much

If you want to upgrade to an SSD to replace your HARD drive you buy a SSD SATA 2.5 inch

Who will go in place of your HARD drive in the Bay to start the computer and plug in the SATA cable

Now to start until the new drive, you must reformat so you have to make or buy a HP recovery for your computer media

Here is a link on how to do recovery HP Media
