MSKB article delete C:\Windows.Old?

Can someone point me in the direction of an article (with the number) in the MSKB which tells you how to remove the C:\Windows.Old folder with a command prompt? This is for a school project. I searched the MSKB and can't seem to find anything that tells me how to remove this folder, only the restoration of this folder. Any help is appreciated.

Here is the process (although I don't know how he uses the command prompt): http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933212.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

    Hi Conner,

Thanks for keeping us posted and share this information with us.

As Palcouk suggested, you can remove the "Windows.old" folder if you have saved data on the computer.

It is not possible for the drive to shrink. I would like you to check the amount of space on the hard disk after you remove the Windows.old folder.

Let us know if you have other questions about Windows in the future. We will be happy to help you.

I have a h8-1000z HP running Windows 8 Pro (a domestic installation). I recently cloned just my hard drive to a Hitachi 1 TB to a 120 GB Intel SSD Cherryville. Such a small disc, I'm looking to get as much room I can release. My windows.old folder is about 10 GB of space lost at the moment. I tried to adjust the ownership of the folder and the files contained in conjunction with change permissions. My account is an administrator account, but even when I adjust the permissions to allow full access to the admins, I always get the following error message:

You need permission to perform this action
You need authorization of josh-HP\Administrators to make changes to this file.
(josh-HP is the name of my rig).
I tried to give permissions to users, administrator, administrators, and all, but nothing seems to work. I even tried to delete the file in safe mode, nothing works. If anyone has any recommendations he could do, my ears are large open.

  • VM not releasing a space between Windows 7 deleted files (windows.old)

I have an upgrade to windows 7, I bought, and I also have the disk installation, but windows 7 makes me upgrading to vista 64-bit.  I basically install vista 64-bit and in the end upward with a 8 GB or VM.  Then I do the upgrade to windows 7 and my windows.old folder, I'm about 20 GB.  I need to get this to 10 GB or less.  I can delete the folder windows.old together with or without using the recycle bin feature.  I may stop or suspend several times.  Windows 7 sees that he has a 40 GB partition and uses about 10 GB of it.  The problem is that my virtual machine is always 20 GB on my mac.  No matter what I seem to do, I can't delete those data.  I'd like to just cleanly install windows 7 but it wont let me since I was an upgrade, it makes me actually upgraded to vista.  He can not update me for XP or even use this installer since XP is 32-bit.  I don't have all the data on the virtual computer, I want to just end up with a cost of windows 7 64 - bit VM without data on it, but that takes only 8-10 GB on the mac (or less).

I also tried cleaning the virtual machine and it helps not at all. VMware fusion 3.0 does not get the memo from windows, these files have been deleted actually.  Does anyone else have this problem?

I'm under VMWare fusion 3.0.0 (204229) under Mac OS X 10.6.2 on a Macbook pro system, 8 GB of RAM, 256 GB Solid State HD.

I tried to delete these files many times by reinstalling windows from scratch, then I started the backup of the VM and try to delete the files using various methods (with trash, not trash, etc.) and I'm never able to get VMware to clean virtual machine.

All you have to do is just create a virtual machine in Windows 7 and you walk through the Wizard New VM just to leave the empty Windows product key on the Easy Install sheet and keep moving forward.

Then once you have installed VMware Tools just follow the steps in Clean install Windows 7 with upgrade media to activate Windows.

  • delete windows.old

I upgraded Windows 10 on my Jet 7 HP. However, now drive C is dangerously low on space. I tried to delete Windows.old, but many items require authorization of the system to do. I'm the administrator, the file seems to be configured to allow me, administrator and full access to the system, but I can't delete this folder. Y at - it something to remove it?

    Hello:

    Yes, there is.

    Run the disk cleanup utility.

Once you get to the disk cleanup window, click the button files cleaning system on the lower left side of the window.

The utility will run again and display the same window, but now you will be able to check the box of files from a previous Installation of Windows (as well as the other boxes to check), and you will then be able to get rid of the Window.old file.

Note: If you do this, you will not be able to easily return to the previous operating system, so make sure you W10 works right in all respects before you delete the Windows.old folder.

  • Is it safe to restore the Windows.old folder?

    BACKGROUND:

I have a Dell Studio 540 in Windows Vista Ultimate which suddenly crashed, then wouldn't restart, saying: "no available boot device." Apparently, the hard drive boot sector had been corrupted. After of the painstaking efforts to save as many as possible training and have unsuccessfully using CHKDSK or Seagate tools to repair the drive, I finally resorted to a clean reinstall using the Dell OEM Windows Vista reinstallation disc. I chose the option to move all old files/folders in a folder Windows.old and I am now able to start Windows. However, all settings prerequisites, programs, files and folders from the previous installation are still in the Windows.old folder. For now, I run a full CHKDSK again (and he says 'Corrupt file attribute Deleting the file record segment X X' so I hope that some repairs happens)...
But what I would do, if possible and if it will not cause problems, use the instructions in this MS support article "how to restore a computer to a previous Windows installation after you install Windows Vista." But before I do that, my question is the following:
    QUESTION:
If I had to do a reinstall of Vista due to damage/corruption of the hard drive, and if all what information has been moved to the folder Windows.old during this process, is it possible that restore the folder Windows.old to the previous installation would restore any damage/corruption existed, thus causing the problem to return or make things worse? Or should I not worry about the restoration of the old "problem"?

    Hello

You can use the restore feature if the previous installation was good.

It is not in your case; If this isn't an option for you.

You can use the windows.old folder to retrieve your data.

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/932912

But the programs must be reinstalled form the original media.

And when you're done with the windows.olf folder you can delete.

"How to use the disk cleanup feature to delete the Windows.old folder after you install Windows Vista"

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/930527

And it is perhaps an idea to run Dell Diagnostics and eventually replace your drive hard if it comes up with errors.

    http://support.Dell.com/support/eDOCS/systems/WS340/en/UG/DIAGS.htm

    See you soon.
