My computer is constantly updated and act up. Is there a virus?

original title: computer Act up

My computer continues to run constantly and updated, has a virus on it? Need to install ActiveX for college level courses and can not, what should I do?

More information requested:

  • Windows Vista Edition _ (32-bit or 64-bit?) with Service Pack _?
  • What AntiVirus do you have?  Is this common?  Have you ever run without it (even for a little while?)
  • This system (which is the name of the manufacturer and the model?) was already another operating system?
  • Have you checked for new hardware devices from the manufacturer of your system drivers for your operating system?
  • What backups you have planned (what is your backup plan?)
  • What version of Internet Explorer you have on it?

Download, install, and run a full scan of the system with these two elements (free version):

Delete everything they find.

  • My computer has been updated and deleted firefox. Can I recover my favorites?

I updated my computer to the original terms, but documents etc. were kept. Firefox has been removed. I reinstalled it in beta. Can I recover my favorites thanks to sync? If I try to connect to synchronize I just get a blank page. I am running windows 8.1 on a Sony vaio SVF15n2b4e.

So I double-cliquiez this one first to display the contents of the folder. There should be a few files of dozens of parameters, and a subfolder named BookmarkBackups.

You will find many files including the date and the number of bookmarks that are incorporated in the name of the file in the subfolder BookmarkBackups. I suggest you copy these to a more convenient location, such as your Documents folder.

Then, from Firefox, use the restore function. Note that this will replace any bookmarks you have added since you have reinstalled this new Firefox. If those who criticize, you can do the steps 'optional '.

    (1) optional - export all new bookmarks you added. See: Firefox bookmarks export to a HTML file for backup or transfer bookmarks.

    (2) restoration of the backup that you copied into your Documents folder (in the recovery menu, at the bottom, choose a file): restoration of the bookmarks from a backup or move them to another computer

    (3) If you have created an HTML file in step 1, re - import only: import bookmarks to an HTML file.

    (4) If you have imported a file in step 3, you can move the Bookmarks imported to the desired location using the dialog library (Ctrl + Shift + b).

    A little luck?

You will not be able to read docx files in Word 97 as such, but you can download an alternative such as Open Office.

It's free and allows you to open and edit docx files. You can even save the file in a format that Word 97 can read if you particularly want to continue using Word 97.

The alternative would be to upgrade to a newer version of the office...

WinXP SP3, not to mention SP2 should be installed years ago!

If you're still under WinXP SP1, you cannot have a functional installed anti-virus application so follow these steps:

Backup of personal data (which none should be considered 100% reliable at this point) then do a format and clean install of Windows.  Please note that a repair installation (upgrade AKA on-site) will NOT fix it!

    @marcella61, welcome to the forum.

Is there a way to disable the Windows updates.  You should go to Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Services / click Services.  In the new window that opens, scroll down to the entrance of Windows Update.  Right-click on it and select "Properties".  Then choose "Startup Type" in the middle of the page.  Then choose "disable".  Windows Update is disabled.

Now, you have the responsibility to ensure that your computer is protected by manually download and install all security updates and other critical updates.

    Hi Gary,.

    ·         Have you checked if there is updates failed?

Check to see if the following is useful.

Step 1: search for the installation error code.

To do this, follow these steps:

    a. click Start, click all programsand then click Windows Update or Microsoft Update.

    b. on the Windows Update Web site or on the Microsoft Update Web site, click view update history. A window opens that displays the updates that have been installed or that have failed to install on the computer.

    (c) in the State of this window column, find the update failed to install and then click on the red X. A new window opens that displays the installation error code.

    d. Note the error number. You will have to type or paste the error number in a search box to the next step.

Step 2: Run the next Fixit tool and then install updates.

    Hello

Your router could be suspicious here, you have successfully updated its firmware as a possible solution? And I would like to
Update your WiFi drivers on computers. How you are positioned in the router? Are there
    obstacles in the path?

Actually try updating your driver and disabling the network logon.

Control Panel - network - write down of the brand and the model of the Wifi - double click top - tab of the driver - write
version - click the driver update (cannot do something that MS is far behind the pilots of certification). Then
Right click on the Wifi device and UNINSTALL - Reboot - it will refresh the driver stack.

Look at the sites of the manufacturer for drivers - and the manufacturer of the device manually.

Download - SAVE - go where you put it - right click – RUN AS ADMIN.

You can download several at once however restart after the installation of each of them.

After watching the system manufacturer, you can check the manufacturer of the device an even newer version. (The
manufacturer of system become your backup policies).

Repeat for network (NIC) card and is a good time to get the other updated drivers as Vista like
    updated drivers.

I would also turn off auto update for the drivers. If the updates Windows suggests a just HIDE as they
are almost always old, and you can search drivers manually as needed.

  • The Mediam player constantly updated from Windows: unnecessary files, creating unnecessary playlists and double and no way to stop the updates.

Upgrading to windows 7 and unfortunately found with the latest version of media player. Here is a short list of what I need fixed (because I can't come back until I have decide of windows 7 is just as useless):

1 player constantly updates whenever the program is opened (not even try to play a song or whatever it is, it starts). This creates files garbage off all, I mean ALL media files in all my shows. the first open I found myself with 2 700 new titles prior to this, all were games or software sound effects. I tried all the options of the user for what this is about updating and stop anything that even resembled an auto-update feature (although nothing seemed really appropriate).

    2. the update also adds auto-playlists, but also of new playlists 'trash' to my normal playlist section who have no related audio files or some effects files above game/software.

    3. it adds not only my multimedia player, but apparently my global media 'profile,' like the first time I went to update my itunes started all these files garbage pulling himself into thinking they were WMA to convert.

    4. the mini player mode needs an option "opacity" so it doesn't go away in circles when I don't have my mouse hovering over him.

    5. attach your download links for skins/visualizations, etc. I used the direct link for something that might not have the opacity of the skin problems regular mini Player and ended up with a file that has frozen on the media player. After using System Restore, I tried another skin on the direct link is a media player and got the same result. I gave a third try (after restoring again) and got the same result. Nice link/beta test...

Moreover, to use this computer to the direct sound, so I need a little my files, clean, organized, and without all the garbage you are dull upgtade is cramming my complete with hard drive. Thank you...

    Hello bouttokillbill,

Thank you for visiting the Microsoft answers Site.

When you start Windows Media Player for the first time, it automatically searches certain default folders in the library music, pictures, videos and recorded TV.  If you add or remove files from these libraries, the Player automatically updates its available media files.

For more information about adding items to the Windows Media Player library, see the link below:

Add items to the Windows Media Player library

To view the folders monitored by Windows Media Player, click on organize: manage libraries in the Windows Media Player menu.
