And they are known for the Mac was systems. Symantec has a long history of making Macs of the anchors from boats. After you uninstall run another report from EtreCheck.

  • iMac 2010 slower that a turtle stuck in the mud after having swallowed the glue

Since upgrading to OS X El Capitan (from factory 10.6 Snow Leopard), my poor iMac have been incredibly slow. To the point where eventually it still would not start.

Since I have everything of importance on an external hard drive, I just went ahead and started from the install disc, go for a clean install.

It took several attempts for the system to boot from disk (starting with C) before finally reading the disk and load the language selection screen. It took almost three days to go through the own installation process. And I mean everyday! Each step takes several hours. I had two beds in this horrible process!

Finally, I registered and through on the desktop. How he was always slow that I felt a stop down was in order. I left for the day. I just go back and press the power button and watched the gray screen with spinner logo and daisy apple during the last 30 minutes.

Does anyone have any ideas why this might be. I appreciate, it's a six year old machine, but my experience with Apple computers over the past 15 years has been such that I don't expect to die after only six years.

My guess is that it is a problem of hard disk of a certain type? But if someone could point me in the right direction, I'd be happy.

    Thanks in advance.

It should of course not take three days to install OS X, even if the Mac is a former model.  My 2011 mini ran Mac OS X El Capitan (and currently macOS tracks Sierra) very well, and it has the lowest overall performance compared to an iMac of 2010.

It took several attempts for the system to boot from the disk (starting with C)

El Capitan is not installed on a drive, if you are saying you reinstalled Snow Leopard first?  That is what is running slowly or not at all?

Here are a few things to try...

Because you have previously installed El Capitan, depending on how you launched the "clean install", its partition Recovery HD hidden is maybe still there internal hard disk.  Press command-R to start.  Here's more information

On OS X Recovery - Apple Support

Alternatively, you can start with the Option key to display the Boot Manager screen, which gives you the choice of available startup disk.  See if Recovery HD is an available choice.

If you can start ("Recovery") as described in the linked document, run disk utility and Erase the internal disk volume.  Then reinstall OS X.  This gives you El Capitan directly, instead of first Snow Leopard install.

If the internal drive is actually defective, and you have an external USB drive that can be erased, you can (temporarily) install the OS on this external drive.  You should unplug your drive with the user data (if not already done), to avoid accidentally erasing.  You can do this installation of the recovery screen (if you are able to start up the Recovery HD).  If not, you need to install Snow Leopard, first (if everything goes much faster than three days).  Whatever it is, run disk utility (from the menu bar if you have reinstalled Snow Leopard).  Select the external target drive in utility box disc and Erase completely.  Then install OS X on this external drive.

After installation and reboot, you can reconnect to another external drive with user data and use this way until you replace the internal drive.  If you have installed Snow Leopard, he move to El Capitan, using the normal procedure.

  • Why my iMac 27 "slows down with Sierra?

I'm running an iMac 27 "(fin 2012) with 32 GB of RAM drive and 3 TB of fusion." Before loading to Sierra, Adobe InDesign CS6 launched and ran fast as most of the data have been stored in the partition of the flash player. After the installation of Sierra, I noticed the app stops or slows down when I click on the items in the Panel and I get the spinning wheel. Is it because Sierra sends data to Cloud Drive when I'm online, or is something else operating here? It is most annoying. I'll try to clear the caches etc. but I don't know what is happening.

    Photoshop CS6 seems OK.

I always forget to 'CONTROL THE FONTS'. I use FontExplorer Pro to make sure that I only have the necessary fonts to work. I forgot to re - organize my fonts folders for system font numbers are reduced to the minimum and FontExplorer only loads the necessary fonts. I will do this job very long, but I don't know that it will solve one of the main problems. For more information on Mac OS X font management see site and information http://www.jklstudios.com/misc/osxfonts.html of Kurt Lang

  • Why is my iMac so slow?

We have an iMac 27 inches that was about 3 years old and in recent weeks he began to be very slow. We often get the beach ball of rotation for simple things like opening an e-mail or from Finder. I tried a number of things without success:

    • reset
    • my hard disk space, it is only about 15% of the full
    • Active disk utility and I tried to fix it, everything seems good
    • has performed a virus check, nothing found
    • re-installed OS X (by the way, yes we took the latest version of El Capitan)
    • checked for background applications, has nothing found
    • has run Apple Hardware Test and found nothing

The only thing I suspect is maybe my hard drive? I checked and it is not one that is on the recall of Apple. Before I go and replace the hard drive, I would like to know for sure if that is causing the problem. Is there a way to know? or is there something else I have forgotten?

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks in advance!

Please post a report of EtreCheckof your system. We then look for obvious problems. Please click on the link, download the application and run the report. Once you have the report, please copy and paste into your response to this post.

If you would like more information on what is EtreCheck, just click on the link and you will find a description of the application.

You mentioned that you ran a Virus check, which indicates that you have anti-virus installed on your computer. This may very well be the cause of your problems that AV apps on OS X have a history of creating more problems than they solve. OS X is extremely secure and doesn't require any AV, cleaning or any OTHER type of third-party maintenance applications. If left alone and simply updated OS X tends to work well for a long time.

  • iMac running slow!

I have an iMac running El Capitan 2013. Sometimes, it seems that someone poured glue into the gears. Apple Mail is slow to respond. Programs to take a minute or two to open it. I try to look at the activity monitor at what is happening, but I don't know what to look for in terms of unusual activity.

I provided my Etretech report, which said 'Good', but yesterday during one of those slow periods, he said it was "below average".

  • New iMac too slow

My iMac is about 90 days (for me): iMac (21.5 inch, end of 2015)

It is extremely slow at startup and support applications, and not really that fast usually once all started upward. At first, I was busy all pass from my old Mac and assumed that there were some teething pain. But even after many hours with Apple (PRAM reset, reinstall OS X, disk first aid - i.e. the usual steps), I still have a problem.

Support Apple claims not to know anything on the comparative analysis of tools, which is naïve, I think. Novabench gives me a score of ~ 800. The top of the page Mac on Novabench is a Mac Pro (end 2013 model) with a score of 1588.

So, what should I do? I feel as if I bought a lemon. My 4 processors do not seem to make for a fast computer.

.... I was busy to migrate all of my old Mac...

Something old incompatible Mac with your current model might come. For now the simplest startign point is let us review your config. Download and run this free utility:

    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

It is safe and written by one of our most valuable members, allowing users to view the details of the configuration of the computer in Apple Support communities without revealing sensitive personal data. There is no remedy but rather reports potential problems for the evaluation.

Run the program and click the button "Report share" when it finishes. Choose "Copy to Clipboard" in the menu that appears. Then come back here and paste the report into a response to your original post. It can often show if all harmful files/programs are dragging down your performance or causing overheating.

  • iMac is slow on Login

I'm running OS X 10.11.5 on an Intel Core i5 to 2.7 GHz, 4 GB RAM, 27 "iMac. After successive updates over the past two years, the computer has become very slow. There so bad that I recently re-formatted the drive and re-installed the operating system from scratch. I always have the same question. I do not have much running on this computer: Office, Dropbox and use it mainly for the web and e-mail.

When I connect (for instance after return to the computer at the end of the day he wake up sleep mode), my drive goes crazy. Looks like it's reading or writing or swap files from memory. It does this for several minutes. While this is happening, I can't really use the computer. I can't understand what is the cause. I check activity monitor (CPU, memory, disk) to see if there is an application that is causing the disc to do this. Nothing seems strange to me. I see the activity monitor, Kernel_Task, Firefox, WindowServer and certain other active phenomena, but noting seems abnormal. I even try killing them one by one to see if that makes a difference, but it has no effect. I know Dropbox devours cycles when its indexation, but this often happens when Dropbox is up-to-date and don't do anything. When the disc is stopped, the computer seems to be normal.

Someone knows how to fix this? What else should I look for?

    Thank you!

On the alarm system is a household that was after midnight - you don't have to leave your mac all the time.

(its tips unix), you do not have enough RAM to run all applications that you want to have active at the same time.   Handling of RAM changed with Yosemite - so no problem with maverick running the same thing means not much.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is particularly bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These must be run as administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Run the Console application in one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first letters of his name in a Spotlight search. Select from the results (it should be at the top).

☞ In the Finder, select go utilities ▹ of menu bar or press the combination of keys shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be all Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ all Messages

in the list of logs on the left. If you don't see this list, select

List of newspapers seen ▹ display

in the menu at the top of the screen bar.

Each message in the journal begins with the date and time when it was entered. Highlight date back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered since then until the end of the episode, or until they begin to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy messages to the Clipboard by pressing Control-C key combination. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command + V.

The journal contains a large amount of information, almost all this is useless to solve any particular problem. When you post a journal excerpt, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't dump blindly thousands of lines in the journal in this discussion.

Please do not post screenshots of log messages - text poster.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the journal excerpt, an error message may appear on the web page: "you include content in your post that is not allowed", or "the message contains invalid characters." It's a bug in the forum software. Thanks for posting the text on Pastebin, then post here a link to the page you created.

If you have an account on Pastebin, please do not select private in exposure menu to paste on the page, because no one else that you will be able to see it.

  • New iMac so slow 2016... What is going on?

Bought my new iMac this year... Transfer all my data from the 17 PowerBook... and it runs slower than my PB. Spinning ball all the time... a program to another. I have SSD on the iMac that makes "so-called" run faster... more silent etc... But I see SLOWER

I tried everything, call Apple, not the free support is over... and everything I tested, worked in accordance with their instructions not made no results! If disappointing. I think we have "blown off" for the first time, and I've been a Mac user since the first Apple computer faithful came out!

Any suggestion of anyone else having the same problems
