  Looks like your laptop is a numeric keypad incorporated in the standard keyboard.  So, probably, you have NumLock to be able to use this feature.  Find a way to turn off Num Lock.

  Thank you for visiting the Microsoft Windows Vista Community.   New profile created, try browsing to the old profile (C:\users\username).  You should see all the old user data.  If this does not work, try to copy the files in Safe Mode.

  Try a Hard Reset as follows.

  Shut down the laptop.  Remove the AC adapter and then remove the battery.  Press and hold the power button for a minute.  Reinsert the battery, connect the power adapter and start Notepad.

  After the upgrade to win 8 from win 7 on my laptop, that some special character keys don't work in the exact way. For example, when I press SHIFT + @-> I get "result and vice versa.

  Also the sign of the backslash works. It gives the character # and hash gives me character £.

  Another possibility is the incompatibility with the constant guard of Comcast program, which is not compatible with Win 8.  I had the same problem (1-0 on the main keyboard keys don't work), but once I uninstalled the constant guard, everything worked again.   I am running Vista and you have acquired recently a nasty virus and a program called care online which starts the search from my computer start up.  My computer would crash whenever I tried to do anything.  I contacted my anti-virus (Trend Micro) company and their suggestion ran their call online from home and he finds and 9 Trojan infected files deleted. Then I also downloaded the removal of their AVFake tool, but it does not find or fix the program guard online.   Going to be honest here... You'll probably end up restoring the system to the factory settings (SHAVE - starting-format and install fresh - wipe/destroy all data on it and install the OS itself, followed by updates hardware device drivers and operating system and then the return facility on each of your applications and restore your personal data back on) then you want to check your backups and/or use a bootable external media (maybe Ubuntu LiveCD) to capture what you really want from the system for this.
