My WinSXS folder has 18 GB

Hello

Are all records and files inside my WinSXS folder really necessary? Is it possible to reduce its size without damaging the system? During my first installation of windows, it was not as big as now.

The WinSXS folder tree is essential to the operation of Windows.  It is maybe not as large as it appears because it includes junctions to other folders of Windows Basic.
Microsoft has recently come out a fix that allows cleaning of WinSXS. It's the only safe way to do it. See the links below.  (On my computer it cleaned 6 GB).

The Disk Cleanup Wizard addon allows users to delete the obsolete Windows updates on Windows 7 SP1

Read the advice given by Ronnie Vernon MVP in the thread above:

    aviv00

You posted some very, very bad advice on this Web site that you referenced.

The WinSxS folder is 'supposed' to have duplicates of files system and other components. It is one of the main reasons that it is created in the first place.

If you remember "DLL _' where you install software programs that would overwrite files dll system with their own versions and cause other programs to break in the process. It's a huge problem, and the WinSxS folder has been created to solve this problem.

WinSxS contains several versions of many files so that a program can use whatever version it was created, without worrying about other installed software on the system.

The removal of duplicates in this folder will have only one result. A complete reinstallation of the operating system and other programs.

  • Problems with VC90 runtimes after deleting the winsxs folder. Installers now may not have write access to the winsxs folder?

I very much regret to remove winsxs folder. I read that it might be recreated after being deleted and it was, but now VC90 doesn't quite

A bunch of programs does not start, saying: there is a problem with the 'side by side configuration. Sxstrace using and try to run one of these programs, the analyzed log file shows that it was looking for VC90 manifest files in the folder "winsxs/manifest", which he could not find.

It was weird because I feel that these manifest files should be created by the setup of the program (this program has been installed after I deleted the winsxs folder).

Programs that are looking for VC90 during installation will say I did not install and will try to install it, and then fail and leave. I tried to install the runtime myself, but get the following error:

    Product: Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x 86 9.0.30729.17 - Error 1935.An error occurred during the installation of assembly ' Microsoft.VC90.ATL, version = "9.0.30729.1", publicKeyToken = "1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b", processorArchitecture = "x 86", type ="win32" '.     I tried to get windows updates, but that did not fix it. I also tried to install SP2 (currently SP1) but it wouldn't install.

    Could someone help me please?

  • How to clean WInSXS folder was updated without having to install on Server 2008 diskcleanup

My question is possible to manually remove updates without installing diskcleanup on my 2008 R2 Windows server or any other server.  The reason is that they said that install diskcleanup causes the disk compression so I need to find alternative solutions to clean up the disk space.  I recently downloaded TreeSize Pro (freeware) on my Windows 7 computer to test.  The program works well by showing you which files are used, but it seems the Winsxs folder is a good place to start, or maybe it isn't.  I just basically want to delete files on another server of companies without users calling to complain that they lack shortcuts etcs and need a place to start.

Also is there a way to run speaker program via web or you must have something running on the real server?

    Thank you

  • What is the perpose of the winsxs folder

What is the perpose of the winsxs folder

The WinSxs is the central repository of records for Windows. All installed files are placed in the WinSxS folder, including updated files up-to-date. So, you will have a lot of different versions of each file, allowing you to roll back service packs and Windows updates to a previous state.

The current version of a file is hardlinked to the appropriate place in the rest of the file system. A hard link is a file name. All files have at least one hard link. Windows system files (usually) have two links in hard, one in WinSxS and one in c:\windows\system32. The two names pointing to the same bytes on the disk.

As the files have two names, they are counted twice by Solution Explorer, once once of WinSxS and System32.

There are other uses for it as well. It allows several programs to use different versions of DLLs.

I think one of my friends has been viewing my pictures on my computer and I want to know if there is a way to see whenever my "My pictures" folder has been seen.  I don't need the last time he was seen.  I want to see a story, as he saw the week last each time.  Is this possible?

There is no such capability within Windows, but there may be some third-party utilities that could - but I don't know any.

First of all, read this: http://aspoc.net/archives/2008/11/20/winsxs-disk-space-and-windows-7/ he might change his mind.

Secondly, yes you can but I (and others) would not recommend it: http://aspoc.net/archives/2008/11/20/winsxs-disk-space-and-windows-7/
  • My winsxs folder is 13 GB and growing. Any chance delete anything in this file?

My winsxs folder is 13 GB and growing. What can I delete this folder? IE8, Windows 7.

    Hello

I ask you to not remove the WinSxS folder or its contents. All the files needed for the specific additions, roles, applications will appear in the directory % windir%\WinSxS. The %windir%\WinSxS folder (also referred to as the component store) is used to store all of the installation source files that are required for Windows to address itself and its optional components, which takes the place of the traditional flat media.

Delete, move or adjust the WinSxS folder will be fatal. New installation of Windows 7 is the only resolution.

However, you can uninstall programs you do not use. This will help the size of the WinSxS folder. Consult the following link:

  • My images folder has changed to a double D:? Help, please! -windows - 7

Hey there. I have a new computer (asus x53u) laptop and am running windows 7 Home premium, 64-bit version. Service Pack1. Anyway, fairly new to windows 7 and new on a partitioned hard drive! Currently, all my documents/videos etc. were stored on the C: drive, the same as my operating system. I was changing the location of my pictures on the D: drive. I did it by going to start, by clicking on my name, right click on photo and clicking Properties. I then went to the place. (this method has worked for others, such as video) I then clicked on 'move', then 'computer', then 'storage D: D: – once opened, when I would normally choose the duplicate folder, I created, in this case 'images'. However I clicked the button 'Select folder', without actually selecting a folder first. : 0 (so what was the 'images' folder has now transformed into "Storage D:" - when I click Properties, it turns out that my hard drive!) It says "type: local drive, file system: NTFS"- and of course shows the pie scale. I tried to revert to the situation and move them to the folder images duplicate, I created for her. When I click on apply he asks me if I want to move all the files to the new location. I click Yes and then get an error message reading: cannot redirect parent down. The specified path is not valid. I also tried clicking 'restore the default' on the location tab, click on apply, when asked if I want to move the files to the new location I select Yes, then get an error message that says: failure of the list of regular subfolders under "D:\MSOCache" Acess is denied. (I am the administrator on this computer)... Thank you very much for your help and your expertise, I looked everywhere trying to find a solution! Best regards, Brendan

    Hello David,.

You can take a look at desktop Adobe Creative Cloud application: Questions and answers > what happens if I delete the files in my folder of Creative Cloud Files? > I quote the entire text, so you can find better it: "synchronize destruction file for the creative cloud and other equipment related to the account. The files deleted from the Creative Cloud Files folder are first placed in the section of the archive files from the files page. It is similarly of the files deleted from the files page. • Compressing files for the WinSxS folder

I wonder why the folder winsxs in Vista and Windows 7 do not use file compression? Due to the nature of the case, it would not affect the performance of the system and would save several gigabytes of disk space.  The only files that can be skipped is the manifest files that are less than 4 KB of size...

The INF file is very small, I think it wise to use compression for a file on this folder as well :)

Each regular on NTFS file can be considered be a single 'hardlink' a data element. You can have multiple hard links, which is like having the same file in two places with just the cost of the extra link and not the data. The '. 'and'.. ' directory? A few hard links in the current directory and the directory's parent. WinSxS is full of files that are installed as components, usually of Windows and other Microsoft software. When these recommended "settled" in a given place, what actually happens is that a new link (hard link) is created in the data file. It is one of the reasons why Vista can be installed that on NTFS - it made prolific use of hard links. The physical files has obvious implications - you're not only compressing the installation media, but only copies of the actual files that make up Windows. If you package, part of what you package consists of installed files - or files that you can install later. And Windows (or other applications) do not always provide a compressed file. For example, Vista will choke if you try to install the libraries shared IIS and its XML schema for winsxs files are compressed. They probably check that it still has the read-only attribute and I forgot to allow the presence of other attributes. Personally, I think it's a bug, but whatever it is, there is a risk that you must be aware of. No need to cherish luxuries (cause everythine come and go) even the life you have is borrowed (Cause you are not promised tomorrow)

  • during an update lots of my profile folder has been put in a folder on the desktop marked the old data. How to restore this data file

During a bet to update, automatic update of windows has started and some how much my profile data has been removed and stored in a file on the desktop. There is a simple and easy way to restore this folder from the current firefox?

You can use the contents of the Old Firefox Data folder to "roll back" the refresh, but this involves several steps. It's probably even faster than the recovery of individual files and load those into your new profile.

Check in the folder 'Old data Firefox' update adds a folder with a random semi name on your desktop. If there is only one, that probably has your old settings and Add-ons. If there is more than one, you'll want to work with one who has been updated recently.

Once you have identified the profile folder, that you want to restore, here is my "old profile resurrection suggested procedure:

    Overview

Here are the steps described in more detail below:

    1. Create a new Firefox profile
    2. Delete all of this profile folder
    3. Copy in all of the old profile folder

Create a new profile for Firefox (Windows)

Exit Firefox completely and start up in the Profile Manager by pasting the following in the Windows search, or the Run dialog box by pressing ENTER:

    firefox.exe -P

Note: any time want to switch profiles, exit Firefox and return to this dialog box.

Click on the button create a profile, give it a name like OldSettings and skip the option to change the location of the folder. Select the new profile from the dialog box, and then start Firefox.

Open the new profile folder in Windows Explorer

Firefox in the new profile should look like a new installation of the plant. Open the troubleshooting information page by using either:

    • button "3-bar" menu > "?" button > troubleshooting information
    • Menu help > troubleshooting information
    • type or paste everything: in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table, click on the view file"" button. Firefox will launch your new profile folder in Windows Explorer.

This folder open, switch back to Firefox and get out by using either:

    • "3-bar" menu button > button "power".
    • (menu bar) File > Exit

Firefox is closed, the profile folder must be front and Center, or you can activate it by using the taskbar.

Copy old data instead of new

In this new profile folder you just popped open - NOT the one on your desktop - select all content (you can use Ctrl + a) and delete (you can press Delete on the keyboard).

Leave this window open, open or switch to your folder of old data of Firefox. Consult your old profile folder. At this level, you should see a folder named bookmarkbackups among other things.

Select all (Ctrl + a) and copy (or right-click > copy or Ctrl + c).

Switch to the empty profile folder in another window and paste (or right-click > paste or Ctrl + v). This may take a few minutes because some files are large.

    Launch Firefox

Firefox should start in this 'new' profile with the old resurrected profile data. Success?
