Mystery - blue on his side, green on mine

I'll send messages to another iPhone user (both we have T-Mobile) and from time to time they appear as iMessages (blue) on his end, but as the (green) texts on mine. No idea why?  It doesn't happen very often, but it's weird.  Thanks in advance!

One or both of you are moving in and out of data service. Happens to me when when my friends me messages in transit. The line he takes in hiding in points. There is still enough cellular signal to get a SMS but no data or WiFi. Thus, according to which has been send or receive when he was underground, the colors change.
