  I had the same problem, was driving me crazy until I found that I could enable a toolbar of menu by right-clicking on the toolbar and checking "menu bar". This brought menus that I was familiar with, including the "Tools". Then, I was able to apply these tips from the help system:

  Specify what happens to the message window when a message is deleted
  

  Location of the menu: tools | Options | Advanced | Read and display
  Check the "message close window/tab on move or delete.

  You may be able to recover the files deleted using the component of previous Versions.

  1. open the Windows Explorer and navigate to the folder where the files are stored.

  2 right click the folder and select the restore previous Version in the menu.

  3 in the previous dialog, select a version with a date and time before when you deleted the files.

  4 select the copy button. Select the desktop as the location for the copy , and then click the copy button.

  5 go on the desktop, open the copied file and search for the files.

  If the files are there, move them out of the folder copied to the desktop. You can then delete the copied, previous version of this folder.

  OE has never changed for Windows Live Mail. It is a totally different program.

  I was unable to send from my talktalk email account after the upgrade of win8 to win8.1. I reinstalled Thunderbird on top of the existing installation, but the problem remains. (I checked the server settings!).
  In a fit of madness, I deleted this Thunderbird email account after having read in the forum that this does not remove the actual e-mail, just the account details. However, after you re-create the talktalk email account I can't find my emails! Help - some of them are quite urgent.

  Problem identified - and this is not a problem of T-bird. Avast free antivirus has been set to scan outgoing messages and created an error that was not recognized by T-bird or Avast. Turning off this aspect of Avast sorted!
  Incredible sense of relief after hours trying other diagnoses.
  On the positive side, without it I would not have discovered MozBackup.

  Around 800 deleted messages came in my Inbox. I removed them again and emptied the box remove and compacted. They all come back whenever I go to the Inbox. Also all the subfolders in my Inbox disappeared.

  There is a box that appears almost every day asking me to compact all folders and click to do. I didn't know what that meant until today. It doesn't seem to change anything. Today, I also went to compact waste. Since posting my request the problem with deletions reappear ceased, thankfully.

  My other problem with files disappearing is not resolved, they seem to have disappeared for good. I did a couple of times file Repair as you suggested but no change.

  The Local TB Inbox deleted messages (check "leave messages on the server".) Hope that it would diminish my local mailbox size. All messages are kept on the server, local TB Inbox empty.
  Then unchecked "leave messages on the server", so I could remove future emails locally and on the server.
  Uninstalled TB, since it was not retrieve new email from the server.
  PRESTO! No more email in my Inbox Yahoo! Mail (on the Internet) Server! Yaaaayyyyy! NOT.

  THX fr the contribution. Yahoo! support team have been able to restore most of my lost mails, so no biggie.
  I have reinstall TB, but could not get back them, even though my profile was intact.
