Need help | Time Machine: An external drive to an another external backup

I have two external drives connected to my Mini.

  1. Elementary school: a 4 to format ExFat (because it must be compatible; he must remain this Windows format).  Currently, it is half full.
  2. The second: Time Machine.  It is currently formatted as OS X Extended (journaled).  I can change the format of it if necessary, although the documentation I've read online indicates that this is the required format.  He is currently empty, eagerly waiting to be filled.

I recently had to upgrade both of these drives.  For the past three years or so this configuration worked.  Since migrating my data to the new material and permutation of readers, however, my main drive is now listed under Time Machine-> Options-> excluded items.  It is grayed out so I can't remove it from the list and can therefore be saved.

Can anyone offer advice?  On the phone that I was told all upward could never work, but, again, I do this for several years (even on this version of El Capitan).  It was a headache Time Machine restore (perhaps because of the formatting), but at least my data has been backed up with precision.

I was surprised (and dismayed) when, on the phone, I was told by the representative of Apple to get just Carbonite because what I do is impossible.

You can read and write on the main drive of the Mac computer?

Which lists Get Info for the primary drive?

In particular, what is listed under permission & sharing. Post a screenshot of the window would be useful to read the information with wider sharing & permissions

  • Time Machine don't prune the old El Capitan backups and works out of space and "backup fails.

With the help of El Capitan 10.11.1, I noticed a change in behavior with the handling of the time Machine of large files, specifically the files of virtual disk VMWare Fusion (about 50 large concerts).  After a few weeks of use of fusion VM virtual machine, Time Machine gives an error where it ran out of space and "backup failed."

I had the same problem occur on a second iMac that I own.

I reformatted my external drive for Time Machine and started fresh, but after a few weeks, I got the same error again.  It seems that Time Machine is not the size or remove older backups of VMware virtual disk to provide a space for the new.

Previous versions of Mac OS X and Time Machine had no problem with the backup of large files such as these.

Has anyone else noticed "backup failed" message with Time Machine on El Capitan?  I know that I can exclude the disk virtual VMware backup, but that defeats the entire purpose of Time Machine backups.  Any suggestions?

Time Machine automatically deletes older snapshots to make room for the new. If your backup history is shorter than expected, it may be because you want to save one or more large files frequently.

Software virtualization VMware, Parallels or VirtualBox creates a large virtual disk container that is constantly evolving. It will not be saved at all while the virtual machine running, and at other times it must be saved each Time Machine performance. Who fills up quickly any backup destination.

You must exclude files from virtual drive of your Time Machine backups. To do this, click the Options button in the Time Machine preferences window. You can also do this to virtualization, application settings. Back up the files on the virtual disk within the comments system, using a native backup application.

A compromise solution is to create a 'snapshot' of the virtual machine in the virtualization software (not a Time Machine snapshot.) This will give you a single large file that never changes and only has to be saved once. All future changes will be stored in a file that is much smaller initially, but will grow over time. You must always exclude this backup TM file. If you need to restore the computer virtual of Time Machine, you will have a working configuration, which will be easy for you to restore the rest of the data in the system of comments.

I started my iMac this morning find a message that I didn't stop my Seagate external hard drive properly. I always just shut down my computer, I do not close the hard drive first. Now the computer says disc is not readable by this computer. Looks like it's a goner but maybe not, I don't know. I can't tell if it's the same thing to my Lacie Time Machine. I ordered a new SSD to upgrade my 2011 MacBook Pro that runs on OS 10.7.5. I would like to install own El Capitan on the new SSD. Can I save my current hard drive using Time Machine and an external hard drive and then re - download my old stuff in the new SSD? Is this possible at all?

Basically, I want the new SSD to be as clean as possible. Obviously, I would only the files and applications on my computer current to be transferred. I would be grateful and recommendations on the best way to do this. Thank you.

Look at these links for orientation:

    http://pondini.org/TM/19.html

    http://pondini.org/TM/5.html

I would format the new SSD in Mac OS extended (journaled), personally Run Time Machine to install your data and then install El Capitan.  In the end, it's your decision.

Since I changed my hard drive on my mac pro book I can't access the time machine back up on my external hard drive. All the shows when I connect the hard drive, but I can't access it.  Any ideas?

I use El Captain MacBook Pro (15-inch mid-2012),

By changing the hard drive, you have also lost all preferences, including those for Time Machine. You can have success by cloning back from the old system to the new drive to get back them.

Or, simply erase the backup drive, reconfigure Time Machine preferences, then let time Machine do a new backup.

  • Disk utility was unable to repair the Time Machine USB2 external HARD disk partition?

    Hello.

My client has problem with its USB2 500 GB Seagate FreeAgent Go since early 2010. There 2 partitions: FAT32 and HFS (for most Time Machine backups). After connection and enter its password valid successfully, it takes a minute to set up, and then a message that says "OS X cannot repair the «...» "You can still open or copy the files on the disk, but you cannot save changes to the files on the disc. Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can. "I ran disk with their verification utility. Both are problems with "invalid sibling link" and said the repair option. However, this repair option is grayed out.  So, is it not possible to fix it with free software on the disk except for the reformat?

I used two different 15 "MacBook Pro (Mac OS X v10.8.5/Mt. mid-2012 lion and v10.10.5/Yosemite of the early 2013) with the same results, is not the MacBook Pros. http://imgur.com/a/OW0s6 for a couple screen

    Thank you in advance.

Disk utility can't repair an error of invalid sibling link. You use Disk Warrior that assuming that the disk is always good. Otherwise, you will need to save what you can then reformat the hard drive. Exactly what the error message said.

  • Are the contents of iCloud drive saved by Time Machine, or can they be by another application?

I have papers etc. on the iCloud benefit from the drive on which I want to be sure top = either thru clone Super Duper or Time Machine or through my cloud system CrashPlan = is the iCloud content player like Dropbox, essentially in reverse?  or are the content only on the drive and not backed up?

Applications like CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper cloning can copy/clone the content of hard drives; I don't think they can save things in the cloud. And, although I don't use time machine, I don't think it can be. Here are a few articles from Apple on icloud-storage and backup:

  • Moving backups Time Machine - the operation cannot take place because the backup item is not editable

I want to change the external hard drive that I use for my time machine backups. I went through the steps listed here:

Time Machine: How to transfer backups from a current backup disk to a new backup drive - Apple Support

It seems to work correctly. I shot TM back and adding the new drive. TM is now backing up files on the drive up, but there is a problem.

For some reason, TM has begun to put backups "freely" for lack of better in the external hard drive, and not in the backups.backupdb folder for a week, then returned to save them in the backups.backupdb > ComputerName > files from backups. So in other words, when you click on the hard drive in the finder, it opens the player and you see a folder named Backups.backupdb and then a bunch of mixed in which files are backups time machine named 2016-01-24-XXXXXX, etc.. When you go to the folder Backups.backupdb, there's a more random "loose" time machine backup file 2016-01-23-XXXXXX, and then another folder with the name of computers and in the folder are all TM backups except loose ones I mentioned earlier.

It seems that TM is working properly now, but I don't know why he put the files from the first days outside the backup folder. However, when I do drag, I get the error:

The operation cannot be completed because backup items is not editable

I want to just put all the files in the right folder so that I can A) keep my disk organized and (B) ensure what TM can find everything correctly should I have to go back.

No idea what is happening and how to fix it?

Although the documentation Apple says you can copy Time Machine backups in the Finder, it is very slow and sometimes does not.

This technique works only if the volume that you copy to the same size or larger that that you are copying to.

First of all, please open the Time Machine preference pane and click the Select Disk... button. You may be able to unlock the settings first, by clicking on the padlock icon in the lower left corner of the window. Log in as administrator.

Remove the volume you want to copy in the list of backup destinations. Then turn off Time Machine.

Launch disk utility, open the built-in Help and search for the term 'Double '. Follow the instructions. All existing data on the destination volume will be deleted. That shouldn't be a problem, because you do not want to mix non-sauvegarde and backup data on the same drive anyway.

If the volume you are copying has been encrypted by Time Machine, you must first unlock it. Click the release button in the toolbar of the disk utility window.

Turn Time Machine back on and select the new volume as a backup destination. Alternatively, you can continue to use the old volume, if you wish. Both will be alternated when both are available.

ATTENTION: If you copy the volume is corrupted, as shown by the ERD or first aid in disk utility, while corruption is copied to the new drive. Do not copy data from a damaged on a faulty disk volume. Put aside the reader and do not use until you don't know that you no longer need the data. Then securely erase it and bring it to a recycling center. Do the same if the restore operation fails with "disk errors."

  • Time machine: old back to merge with another of

    Hello

I have a problem my back disc is full. And I have similar backups. whenever time machine backs up all the files (I thought it automatically adds only new... boh.) Anyway could you suggest me how to merge the old backups in order to keep a backup with older and newer files in the corresponding folders? Can I do it manually, but what paths of files across? I know on the restoration in disk utility, but is used to copy a disc shape to another, I read. I have all in one disc, and I want to do new backup now that the mac is new. Thank you very much. Guido

I suggest that you forget about 'fusion' backups Time Machine. Time Machine backups are complex, they contain several levels of permissions and access rules to prevent users from editing, display or delete data belonging to others (or system files).

Time Machine also manages the size of backup itself, so even if you manage to make "a big backup" eventually he will get full & TM will remove the oldest copies (often without warning).

Apple don't support editing, merging, or otherwise change the backups Time Machine.

You would be wiser to upgrade the old backup in a safe place and start a new backup to a new disk. If you need old files you can retrieve them from the old backup.

Another option is to make a copy of your important data for archiving. Simply copy these files to another disk instead of depend only on the Time Machine backups.

  • Time Machine is unable to finish his first full backup

I am running OS X Lion 10.7.5 on my Mac Mini in 2011.  I recently had Melrose Mac increase its 16 MB RAM and HD sound internal to a 2 TB drive and they have cloned my original data and restored on the new drive.

Then, I partitioned the drive and installed El Capitan, Yosemite, and Snow Leopard on each of these partitions.  Who are all the Mac OS X extended (journaled).  Each partition correctly starts and runs.

Then, I took my LaCie 2 Bay drive, with 1 t readers in each Bay, wiped and set up as 'Fast' while it will be seen as a 2 t drive and chose this drive for Time Machine in Leo.  This disc is also Mac OS X extended (journaled).

About halfway through the first backup (350 GB), I get the following message from Time Machine; now it happens more quickly:

And here it is recreated Time Machine in system preferences:

I followed the instructions several times using repair in the disk on the primary drive of LaCie and its partitin utility, but it does not report errors.  Then the first Time Machine backup will fail again about half way through.

I've been reviewing Pondini suggestions, but they do not cover this specific message and they do not seem to find the problem.

    Any thoughts?

Moderators, please move this to the subheading appropriate; as Mac OS X Lion/Time Machine and remove this message.  Thank you.

  • Time Machine do not wake the Macbook to perform backups

I'm saving a Macbook Pro on a Mac Mini with OS X Server installed. Previously, I supported it up to a USB hard drive connected locally. It is 1 year and Yosemite, can it take hourly backups while you sleep as expected.

In both cases, Time Machine works fine, except one thing... Hourly backups do not, occur when the computer is in standby. In other words, the Mac does not wake itself for the backup as expected (Power Nap is enabled.)

I've seen similar to this, other issues involving a UPS connected by USB, but I have no one.

    What I tried:

    1. I did a clean (with format) installation of El Capitan of the recovery partition and did not restore from Time Machine (just dragged my music, photos, documents to their respective homes manually).

    2. I have also reset the SMC and the PRAM without effect on this issue.

    3. I upgraded 10.11.2 and the problem persists.

4 past of connected locally to target (USB) for a target of network (on OS X Server) without change

Starting from what a manual backup works perfectly and automatic backups occur as planned then I use the computer (that is, as long as it doesn't go to sleep).

Energy Saver preferences are using default values, Power Nap is enabled.

So my question is just... Before I contact support, does anyone know if there is a bug open for this report?  I * have * read the other threads and they speak very precisely a connected UPS number and that a fix was imminent in 10.11.2. The other owners of Macbook having this problem?

Time Machine wakes you up only the Mac to perform a backup, if the Mac is connected to a power outlet. If you did that, then it might be a bug that I don't know a solution.
