Nested 5.5 ESXi in Workstation 10 Networking question

Hi all

I have an instance of VMware workstation 10 running on an HP z600 with guest OS in RHEL 6u3 where I am trying to accommodate a nested instance of ESXi 5.5 for a lab environment.  I have no problem with the guest OS (Windows or Linux) network using deck vmnic on workstation instance.  I have set the ESXi Server also uses a vmnic bridge.  I can connect to the end ESX Server from any workstation on my network with vSphere, but I can't connect to all nested ESX Server virtual machine hosting.  I tried Linux and Windows virtual machines with the same result.  Virtual machines do not seem to be a problem to get my (interesting) DHCP Server IPv4 configuration.  From the virtual machine, I cannot ping the default router.  Ping indicates the destination is unreachable.  I ping the IP of management on the ESX Server from any workstation on my network, but not VM.  Network mgt ESX and vmnetwork are on the same vmnic.  Very simple configuration.  Any thoughts on where to start?

You have the vmnet devices configured to allow the "Promiscuous" mode?  See http://kb.vmware.com/kb/287.

I use standalone desktop with 16 GB memory with windows 7 and installed workstation 9.  I created my configuration of base, DC, ESXi-host1, host2 ESXI, ESXI-host3 and host4 ESXI.  I also installed vcenter as a virtual machine within the workstation and I can access all the hosts and vm (DC, vcenter) by name and IP.  Also DC and vcenter, I can connect to internet using vnet0 (workstation).  My management is vnet3 and my storage is vnet4.  I created a new virtual machine called vcenter in ESXi-host1.  I then installed vcenter server and vsphere client.  Everything works well.  I went to install web client and adobe flash player, to internet access.  For switch 0 I vmnic0 active and vmnic1 in mode standby.  The ports VM group vm network which has vcenter vm and vmkernel port with network management.  I went into properties and accepting promiscuous mode network times vswitch and vm.  I can not even access the internet.  This is where I don't know what to do then.  Suggestions?  If you are in need of more data, let me know and I'll give it to you.

Given that I have not found it necessary to connect to the external network, I have not deployed router. To test, I have now deployed a virtual router to connect external network and my VM on nested ESXi can connect to the external network and was able to ping the DC VC etc...

    (1) deploy a Virtual Router download by http://freesco.sourceforge.net/

    (2) connect two network to the router as a display in the snap-in and configure the router

    (3) configure the default gateway of all VM (that is to say DC VC and ESXi host) to use the IP of the router.

    (4) Finally the VM on nested ESXi can connect external network and ping to other virtual machines too.

Happy to hear, your problem is solved (perhaps you mark the wire also as 'responded').

I have not already successfully updated to 3.5 U4 because if the update fails I would not recovery options.

IMHO, this is not correct. Usually, the minor version upgrade will use a bootbank and you should be able to backup to the previous version by pressing 'Shift + r' during the boot process.

Reading on the HCL, it shows that the version of the tg3 driver is 3.86 for ESXi 4.0 and 3.43 b 3.5 U3 and U4. If an update to U4 will not solve anything for the NICs BCM5704. Version 3.86 is usually the driver I did other tests (Ubuntu and OpenSUSE) and it works now also in ESXi 4.0. I think the problem is the tg3 driver b 3.43.

Good to know, maybe someone VMware will add this information to the FAQ or other useful sites.

Is that what I miss having networking in my VM to work?

Got it working! Probably because I import existing VM to ESXi and the network must be reconfigured to identify the current network of ESXi. So I need to edit the virtual machine's .vmx and add following:

    ethernet0.networkName = "" # # ""

    Ethernet1.networkName = "" # # ""

where # is VM network name specified under virtual machine port group.

In image, "VM Network" here is the example:

I also configured and I ran the echo "vhv.allow ="TRUE"' > >/etc/vmware/config order on my PuTTY that I connect to physics ESXi hosting ESXi nested VM instances." Thanks again nested VM experts!

ESXi does not support on your processor hardware-assisted virtualization.  If your processor is AMD - V, there was a design flaw with the first generation of AMD - V parts that we have chosen to not to bypass.  You will not be able to run virtual machines nested on this material.

ESXi 5.0 supports AMD - V only on later processors and family 10H.

  • ESXi 4.0 host network adapters

I'm kinda a noob here, so forgive me if this is a stupid question. I have an ESXi host with two network adapters. My configuration is to have an adapter connected to the Internet and an adapter connected to my internal network. I want to do in order to implement an router ISA in a VM and use a NAT to clients internal and other virtual machines. Is this possible?

I thought it would be as simple as the external adapter with DHCP configuration to obtain the address of my ISP and configuration of the adapter internal staically and then simply using vSwitches to connect the adapters with my computers invited to use the appropriate physical card. The problem is that when I go in the shell of ESXi, you can only configure dynamic or static for the management network and there is no options to configure two adapters separately. I see my internal adapter properly configured with a static address in the vClient, but the external adapter shows a range of IP addresses observed of 10.229.128.1 - 10.229.129.254. Where did that come from? Do I need to use the command-line utility to configure this? If so, what commands can do that? Thanks in advance!

No need to reboot the host. Basically, all you need are two vSwitches. The first one connected to the LAN internal groups of 2 ports, one for the VMKernel (with the configured IP settings) and one for the network of the Virtual Machine. The second vSwitch only requires a Virtual Machine port group.

Configure the virtual machine (your router ISA) with two network cards virtual, a related internal and external vSwitch. Make sure the settings for virtual network cards are set to "Connect at Power On" and are in the 'connected' State when the virtual machine is up and running.

Depending on your ISP, you should get a DHCP IP address on the external vNIC by configuring it to "Automatic" in the guest OS.

  • Networking question in VMware Workstation / nested ESXi network configuration problem

    Hi guys,.

I am trying to set up a virtual lab, I setup a domain, a vcenter server and up to 1 ESXi host controller.

I am really struggling with the network aspect in establishing a vmnic for storing shared, please see the attached screenshots and a few questions:

    1. Is a vmnic a real network map? or vmnic correspond to "network adapters" that you put in place since the setting of your virtual machine?

I followed a tutorial and implement 3 NICs on the ESXi host, in Bridge mode, I tried this in my configuration of vmworkstation and I lose the connection to my server vcenter to the ESXi host.

See screenshot attached to how I configured my ESXi host, screenshot is called 'screenshot2esxihost network', I run got each of the maps defined on NAT network.

    screenshot2esxihost network.JPG

See also the screenshot of how I have my configuration of network settings in my VMWare Workstation, screenshot is called "screenshot1. the tutorial does not show how it has its editor of the virtual network configuration, but it puts its ESXi host NICs in BRIDGED mode, and I'm guessing that you can set this time within the virtual network adapter. If someone could tell me what changes should I make in there and on the network cards in my ESXi host, which would be really useful.

    screenshot1.JPG

My domain controller, server ESXi hosts and vcenter are currently on the 192.168.86 range, which currently stood at NAT

See also a screenshot from the vsphere client - I don't see a vmnic "vmnic0", my goal is to be able to add a "vmnic2" for a separate storage network.

screenshot3 unable to add anymore vmnics.JPG

any help would be received with gratitude, I VCP510 review at the end of the month and really hope to be able to get my lab setup as soon as possible.

The vmnic is the rising 'physical' of an ESXi host. So with the 3 network cards that you configured for the host in VMware Workstation you will see under "Network adapters" and you can use them to vSwitches in the section "network".

  • Nested 6 ESXi on workstation 11 - host can see 1 interface 'physical '.

I'm trying to set up a nested ESXi 6.0.0 laboratory under 11 workstation.  The ESXi host sees only 1 custom NICs, one as vmnic0 which is operational and configured in the management interface.  I have three other network adapters configured for the virtual computer but ESXi is not clear make them they show as active and connected from the point of view of 11 s Workstation.  I need at least one more because it does not use the network for iSCSI vKernel management.  The cards, the first of which are configured the same (custom) in my computer.

I dropped the hardware compatibility of 11.0 to NIC 10.0, but always without extra charge.

    Any suggestion is appreciated.

If you have another suggestion I'm all ears.

I'm pretty sure that it will solve the problem to add the missing lines already. Please make sure that change you the . VMX file with tab of the virtual machine closed in order to ensure that the configuration file is reread after the change.

  • Option missing in ESXi 6 bridge/NAT networking

For years I had been running ESXi 3.5 on a server of mine.  Recently, I formatted the server and installed ESXi 6.  A fresh start with new virtual machines.  When I went to create a new virtual machine, not asked me what type of network connection, I tried (bridged/NAT/host-only/etc.).  Instead of only gave me a network label drop down.   I don't have this problem with ESXi 3.5 when running on the same hardware.   I really need my virtual machines to use Bridged Networking. The options you mentioned are available with hosted as VMware Workstation products. ESXi is not NAT or Host-Only (actuylly never had such options) and still work comparable to Bridged networking where the uplinks can be shared by the host and the virtual machines...

  • ESXi test with disconnected network run?

I practice the migration of my current server VMware ESXi 5 2 environment.  Everything seems smooth with the conversion to the test area that will hold everything until the new server is in place.  I wish I could on ESXi machines just to make sure I can document the traps and understand the fixes before doing it for real in fact.

I use the 5 ESXi as a virtual machine on my 8 processor AMD FX-8350 4.0 Workstation (4 allocated) GHz with 16 GB of RAM (8 GB allocated) and a TB of space assigned to the datastore1 of the VM.  I installed a second NETWORK card and configured the virtual computer to use it. I installed the client vSphere on the workstation itself.  I also created a virtual machine inside the VM ESXi running server 2008 std, vsphere client and veeam tools.

    Hello

    Here are two options.

    First option

Right click on virtual machine---> edit configuration---> network adapter---> uncheck the box to connect to the power on option.

    Second Option:

Create virtua vswitch on ESXi host without adding any nic vSwitch. Create machine virtual portgroup in this vswtich. Add this port group to this machine of virtua.

Both this option will be the machine of course that is not network.

  • Need help with execution of vMA on ESXi in workstation

    Hi all

Currently, I am trying to build a laboratory for vSphere 4.0 on my laptop. I have an i7 620 chipset and 8 GB of RAM, running Windows7 64-bit business. I use VM Workstation 7.1.1. I have the full vSphere with vCenter and two ESXi hosts on workstation running. When I try to import the vMA device and run it, it tells me that the system must be 64-bit. I knew this but thought my computer would be able to show this to vMA as 64-bit since everything works in 64-bit. I guess I assumed wrong. Can someone tell me if I can get vMA to work in my computer in my Studio to test on my laptop? Maybe a setting I missed somewhere?

    Thanks for the help.

Run the vMA in workstation - not in the nested ESX - VM.

Running 64-bit virtual machines inside a virtual ESX or ESXi is not possible

If I understand correctly, you need a direct link between these two VMs running on the same host ESXi!

In this case you don't need no physical connection. Simply create a new vSwitch without any rising (vmnic) and connect two virtual machines to a portgroup VM on this vSwitch.

  • Nested with 2 management cards workstation + ESXi5.5 = not to ping requests

    Hello community,

I recently stumbled upon a bug (?) strange:

I needed to install several 1331820 ESXi5.5 in my computer and noticed that the management interfaces are not to ping/accessible queries if more than one NETWORK adapter is used for the management network. As soon as I remove/disconnect ping NIC begins work and the server is accessible.

Have not tested multiple ESX versions yet but Workstation 10/09/11 suffers from this.

Yet several descriptions of this question, but not solutions. A suggested workaround has been upgrading manual driver interface NETWORK of E1000 vmxnet3 but nothing is in my case.

Someone has any idea how to solve this problem?

The cause was found to be using linked clones.

I reinstalled all my guests individually and separately, do not use any cloning and they work like a charm.
