NetRestore & Thunderbolt: an unhappy marriage?

Problem: Netrestore does not work on Mac without Ethernet EG: new MacBook Pro and air. Works like a charm on all the rest.
Seems to me when the target computer starts it does not load the drivers for the card Ethernet Thunderbolt

Simple question: is it possible?

No one knows how to do and if so please can you tell me.

NB: This is a simplified version of a question I posted previously

OK well this question seems to have left stunned everyone, BUT we solved!

We discovered that if you put the machine we want to first image in Disk Mode target, then connect it to a computer with a NETWORK card we can image.

Basically, the new laptop is placed in CT and just acts as a piece of the storage bin.
When you netboot Mac that is connected with you select hard isk of laptop computer attached via TDM as a destination for the image.

Hey presto, no more problems!

  • NetRestore 10.11.4 and 10.11.5 Fail

I used successfully for a some years netrestore to deploy our macs.

Since I improved the image of the master and the server at 10.11.4 the process fails. Experience teaches that usually it gets noticed and fixed. Unfortunately 10.11.5 always has the same identical problem.

I can still deploy the image based 10.11.3 (but hey it's a bread PITA to have to manually do all updates every time).

    Installation program:

Mac OS X 10.11.5 + Server.app on mac mini server (tried multiple servers, even one on a clean install.

    • NetRestore image create with on and off a 10.11.3 system image utility machine hooked up via thunderbolt in target disk mode: continues to work as it used to do
    • NetRestore image created exactly the same way on and off the machine 10.11.4 or 10.11.5: cannot operate.

Clients tested: multiple MBP of ranging from a new machine to a machine of 5 years. All the same performance: progress under the apple logo bar goes to 70/80% and that's all.

Since the 10.11.5 server can still serve the 10.11.3 created image, it looks like not it's the server, it looks that the system image utility needs a fix.

If you're REALLY patient (several hours), it seems the machines just down: hard stop is the only thing that they meet more - black display.

    So the question:

Someone told 10.11.5 netstore base images work? What have you done to work around the problem?

It's going to be really bad Apple out of new material that could have a customized version or something like that before they solve this problem.

Well, I have to add one thing: while typing upwards above, I did some additional tests, and I tried on an old MPB had sitting on my desk for other reasons so he could start the server to a handful of times on one of the servers. As expected, there is a handful of times, but I left it hanging if you change the question here.

And somehow, miraculously, it seems to have jumped through somehow. So the failure rate is not 100% (but given the amount of tests, it is so high at the point of being unusable in practice. But the absence of failure rate of 100%... could be more difficult to debug than necessary, especially given that the images do not want to start in verbose mode (or I don't know how to trigger the verbose boot during a netstore.

  • Thunderbolt display don't wake up since I installed Sierra

I have a Mid-2012 13 "Macbook Pro with a Thunderbolt display. After that I installed MacOS Sierra, my screen often wakes up not when I hit the mouse or the keyboard. I can usually solve the problem by simply unplugging the display Plug and then plug it back it - very annoying. I searched for solutions to this problem on the web and tried everything to reset NVRAM and SMC, reset the display, memory even deleted some plist files obsolete, but the problem persists. Someone at - it similar problems, of the solutions.

    Same problem AGAIN!

This error has been there before after an update of macOS, seems he's back.

  • Thunderbolt display is no longer detected

I have a late 2013, MacBook Pro and a 27 inch Thunderbolt display, bought in September 2014. I use the screen without problems since then. But today the display is no longer detected. I got the MacBook disconnected from the screen, which has been briefly disconnected from the sector. (It was a power outage scheduled as it happens, but I don't see how that makes a difference).

Now, when I connect display of the power of the lead part works fine but the screen does not illuminate. To the search, in the report of the system, the Thunderbolt Bus shows two Ports both with "no device connected". I have a Thunderbolt ethernet adapter and shows.

I tried all the usual troubleshooting steps: disconnected power for a few minutes, resetting the NVRAM, reset SMC. A ran Diagnostics from Apple on the MacBook - all very good. I don't know what I can do. The Thunderbolt connector is slightly warm to the touch, which I think is always the case.

Everyone you have other ideas please?

    Hey donnysp,

If I understand correctly, the external display Thunderbolt is not recognized by MacBook Pro. Looks like you already have a troubleshooting. I recommend you to read this article, it may be able to help solve the problem.

Check the connections on your Mac and external screens:

    • If you use an Apple laptop computer, try to connect the AC adapter.
    • Make sure that the power cable from the external display is connected correctly and that your display is enabled.
    • If you are using a Mac Pro (end of 2013), make sure that your screens are plugged into the right ports.
    • If you use a hub of display, Cabinet or "KVM", try to connect the video cable from your screen directly to your Mac instead.
    • Unplug the video cable where it plugs into your Mac, then reconnect to reinsert the connection.
    • If you are using a video card, unplug the video adapter on your Mac, then reconnect to reinsert the connection.
    • If you use multiple video cards to connect your screen (the cards are "chained"), testing connection of the screen by using a single adapter if possible. Some video cards may not be linked together. For example, a mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter may not be connected to an adapter DVI to HDMI.
    • If your screen has more than one video connection, see if you are using another connection on the display works. If possible, check if you use a different view or a different adapter works.
    • Try using another cable that you know to be in working condition. Check with the manufacturer of the screen to make sure that you use the cable they recommend.

There is no way to add Thunderbolt to a computer. Lightning must be integrated with the system board.

There are a few Thunderbolt PCIe cards but those add only some Thunderbolts ports since the boards of logic has the Thunderbolt hardware

Thunderbolt ports cannot be added by an adapter. So, if you need it, you need a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro.

  • Thunderbolt & PIP screen

The Thunderbolt display is able to PIP?

You will need Sierra of OSX. Please see this link to MacWorld.

    Photo anywhere in the image

The new image in the picture in macOS Sierra function is essentially the same function as in iOS 9 on the iPad. It's great because you don't have to bother to prevent other windows to hide the video you want to watch. On iOS, you can paste the video in the corners of the screen, and that was demonstrated during the keynote, too.

If the corners of the screen do not work for you, however, do not be afraid! If you hold down the command key in moving the image in the image window, you can drop it wherever you want.

  • Connection 2 screens & Ethernet 2 Ports of 15 "rMBP Thunderbolt

I have a mid-2012 15 "MacBook Pro w / Retina display. I look at my desktop configuration using a Henge Vertical Docking Station for reclamation. The Henge dock uses only the ports on the left side of my MacBook (power, lightning X 2, USB and audio).

I would like to connect 2 existing Samsung monitors (w / HDMI), Ethernet and a USB 3.0 hub 4 existing ports using only the ports on the left side of my macbook. Is this possible to do with a kind of simple ethernet-Thunderbolt display separator, or I have to buy an expensive 'dock thunderbolt"as the Belkin Thunderbolt 2 HD Express Dock in order to make this configuration works?

    Thanks in advance!

Apple made the USB-to-Ethernet adapter a bit slower that can make Ethernet 100BaseT. As long as you don't plan the transfer of large files to other computers on your local network, it would work and seems to fit all the ports you need.
