Netspp old storage and issues of Cluster VMWARE

Hello

I saw a former NETAPP FAS 2020 connected storage and confiigured with the cluster of 4.1

Customer is polanning to install new vcenter and ESXi 5 new hosts and want to migrate virtual machines to new Cluster and get rid of the old because of some problems of old hosts

I heard some mouth sharing old storage Netapp Storage can cause some strange problems and can cause some virtual machines get corrupted

is that correct? strange problems known?

Sharing storage should be the correct way to migrate virtual machines safely to the news of ESXi

It's exactly the way I use to migrate virtual machines to a cluster. I've done a couple of times (also with 3.5/4.x/5.0 storage Netapp and ESXi) and never had corrupted VMs. what VMFS is designed for.

Of course, I would not share a LUN to ESXi hosts between different vCenters as final configuration but for migration, it is reasonable.

Just know that:

-Do not upgreade to VMFS5 until all ESXi4 hosts are disconnected.

-Storage i/o Control does not work across multiple vCenters.

-migrate does not mean "vMotion" but: power off > remove inventory > add to the inventory > voltage (of course...)

But one thing that I am uncertain the San connectivity, is it just to create the map of iscsi on the vsphere host software and then add the adapters iqn name to access the San volumes page and rescan for the accessible volumes in the vmware host?

In my environment I use CHAP credentials for clusters of ESXi.  In this way a specific set of ESXi nodes use the CHAP username/password to access EQL volumes.  Advantage is when you add a new node, you only need to provide the name of user and password c.  You will not have to change anything on the side of EQL to add/remove a node.

  • VMware 5.1 with compatibility virtual RDM and Microsoft SQL Cluster mode

    Hello

I am a bit confused by the VMWare documentation and hope someone can point me in the right direction.

I want to know if it is possible and supported to create a cluster of SQL 2008 R2 2 nodes (Server 2008 R2 SP2 are VM) on a 2 node cluster VMWare 5.1 with the use of Virtual RDM compatibility?

When you read the PDF on vsphere5.1 on the link below on page 9, there's a indicating note 'NOTE Clusters on multiple physical computers with no-pass-through RDM is supported only for Windows Server 2003 clusters. It is not supported for clustering with Windows Server 2008. »

    http://pubs.VMware.com/vSphere-51/topic/com.VMware.ICbase/PDF/vSphere-ESXi-vCenter-Server-51-Setup-MSCS.PDF

So that means that I want "a 2-node cluster sql 2008 R2 server" is not supported?

But I also found this link below and in the table of the column on the Cluster SQL line RDM is said 'yes' with a 2.

VMware KB: Microsoft Clustering on VMware vSphere: guidelines for supported configurations

    • RDM: Configuration using a shared Quorum for storage or data must be on Fiber Channel (FC) based on RDM (physical cluster across boxes "CAB" mode, virtual mode for cluster in a box "IPC") in vSphere 5.1 and previous versions. RDM on storage other than CF (iSCSI and FCoE) are supported only in vSphere 5.5. However, in earlier versions, FCoE is supported in very specific configurations. For more information, see Microsoft clustering solutions table above note 4 .

    What follow-up note4->

    1. In vSphere 5.5, native FCoE is supported. In vSphere 5.1 update 1 and 5.0 Update 3, two cluster configuration of the node with Cisco NAC (VIC-1240/1280) cards and driver version 1.5.0.8 is compatible with Windows 2008 R2 SP1 64-bit guest operating system. For more information, see the VMware hardware compatibility guide:

This means that it is suuported, I "m confused.

    Hi Bypy,

Two windows 2008 R2 SQL virtual cluster nodes with RDM is supported only for the IPC or Cluster In a Box that is to say if the two virtual machines reside on the same host ESXi. The same configuration is not supported for the cabin or Cluster across boxes (virtual machines running on different hosts ESXi).

The CAB, you go for the physical RDM mode.

    According to this link, http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1037959

SQL Cluster using windows 2008 R2 is supported for both physical and virtual mode RDM. Between physical and virtual mode depends on whether you want the CAB or IPC respectively.

    I hope this helps.

    See you soon,.

  • Questions about the implementation of clusters of storage and DTS on active cluster

I have a few questions about the implementation of clusters of data store and SRS storage in VSphere 5.1.

We have a data center with about 15 HP blades and a few servers non-lame.  The hosts are all either VSphere 5.0 or 5.1.  Our back-end storage is an EMC VNX 5700 with about 20 stores of data.  All the VMWare is managed by VCenter 5.1 running on a dedicated physical machine.

Currently, each data store is used individually; No piles of data store are put in place.  When a new virtual machine is created, the administrator usually chooses the data with the most space store.  Periodically, we will go back and manually storage vMotion machines to balance the load.

Recently, we have expanded the VNX storage, so we now have LUNS in different pools, with different levels of performance.

What I would do is set up for the data store clusters, so that us when a virtual machine is created, the administrator must not know what data store is in which pool.  Also take advantage of the DRS storage so that the burden of storage will be "refine" himself a little.

I know the setting up of a cluster of storage in a 'clean' environment is quite simple, but my concern is creation/conversion data warehouses existing in active production in the cluster, while they are used.

If I access the screen "data warehouses and store data from clusters ', right-click on the data center and create a cluster, and then move the various data stores in the new cluster, will there be an interruption in the production running systems?

I also wonder about activation of storage i/o control.  It is not currently enabled on data warehouses.  I know it's useful for the StorageDRS, but will be allowing any negative impact on the system?  If I turn on the warehouses of data, is there anything else I should do or set in addition to all that allows him?

Finally, we are in the process of Site Recovery Manager configuration.  SRS has an impact on the configuration of the data clusters and DTS store?

Thanks in advance for your comments.

    Gregg Robertson wrote:

    Hello

Clusters of data and using DTS store doesn't impact RS even if you create a cluster of data store for storage of replicated data and another for everyone else, this way you machines virtual you want to replicate are not moved on warehouses of data that are not replicated , but will still have the ability to move if there is a conflict.

    Gregg

With all due respect but SRM and DTS don't go together. SRM does not at all support the use of DTS. So if you are configuring SRM forget DTS for now.

Reason for this is that SRM knows no DTS and VMs can be in flight when a failover should occur, and bad things can happen. Also, the protection breaks when a virtual computer is moved between data warehouses in a cluster data store.

    In short: don't go there.

It may not by the availability of vSphere manual.  However the global VMware partner who sold me on VMware solution said that the shared storage is not required for HA.

This is the same guy who told me that I would not need to buy Windows Server licenses because everything was included in the package (vSphere Essentials Plus).  Now, I have no Windows license, no shared storage and a customer who will not be happy that we did not include these costs in the citation for this project.

No.... you need a storage shared for HA.

Maybe your partner speak the vCenter Server Appliance that is included on vSphere Essentials Plus and you can use this device to manage your vSphere, ESXi without need a VM of Windows (with Windows license) to install the vCenter server.

  • How to move VMS to new storage AND new hosts

    Hello

I'm having a hard time find, how can I move all the VMS NFS storage to a new storage iscsi (SAN HP). We are also the introduction of new material for guests, so throughout that this is an entirely new environment of vCenter (also from vSphere 4.1 to 5.5). My first thought was to attach new storage to the old hosts. Then do a migration of storage, one for a while (off voltage machines), remove the virtual machine from the old vCenter and then add them to the new environment of vCenter. But we have exhausted all NICs on the hosts of old, so I can't join the new storage, and I can't share a vmkernel for iscsi and nfs port.

You have any suggestions how I can address the issue?

It would work if you are very good to have downtime to your virtual machine.

If you incur no downtime, you can try to install the same set of ESX (i) version on a few new series of servers (for example 10 points on 50 new servers) and add them to the old CR and proceed step by step below

-Configure the old NFS storage on new set of servers

-Migrate (vMotion) all VMS on old NFS to the new set of servers

-Remove all the new set of VC servers

-Add the same set of servers (that have been migrated from VM) to new VC

-Migrate all virtual machines to the new storage and then upgrade your new set of servers

In my view, this way you can avoid having a downtime for your virtual machine.

  • public network for virtual machines, private storage and the service console?

    Hello

So far I had a pretty small facility with 2 servers with 4 physical network adapters each running ESX 3.5, a small box of EqualLogic SAN to shared storage and a few virtual machines on our network of regular reinforcement, routed, not on a private.   The network config was really simple.  I just put everything on real IP addresses on our network of building.

Now I want to move the SAN and the traffic on a private service console network, but I don't know how to do this.

Right now I use 2 NETWORK cards on each server:

vmnic0 is configured on vSwitch0 and has the network of the VM on it that all my use of VMS to talk to the outside world, and it also has the Service Console that uses Virtual Center and I use ssh to it.

vmnic1 is configured on vSwitch1 and a VMKernel Port and also a Service Console Port for iSCSI Software to talk to my SAN.  (never been clear on why both are needed to talk to the SAN, but doctors say they are)

My plan is to set up a vSwitch2 and bind it to vmnic2 and implemented a VMKernel Port and the Service Console Port for software iSCSI on the 10.x.x.x network, set up my new (larger) SAN box on the 10.x.x.x network and simply use Storage vMotion to move virtual machines to the new storage space.  As soon as I did this, I would like to not use the Service Console on vSwitch2 and not a Console Service at all on vSwitch0.  Is it possible to delete the one on vSwitch0 and just use a new vSwitch2 for Virtual Center and ssh access?

So my proposed configuration would be:

vSwitch0: VM network only, used by the VM guests for oriented public access network, no construction of Network Service Console, linked to vmnic0

vSwitch1: superfluous once I do storage vMotion of everything on my old SAN, will eventually remove and pair vmnic 1 with vmnic0, linked to vmnic1

vSwitch2: VMKernel and Service Console on the network 10.x.x.x, used to access the new SAN, used by Virtual Center to access the ESX, used to SSH in to ESX on private network, associated vmnic2

    If it works?

    Thank you.

    Hello

VMkernel ports cannot live on the same subnet. So if you have 3 vmkernel ports say: vMotion, iSCSI and NFS. You really need 3 subnets. 1 for each vmkernel port.

Otherwise how does he know all send properly?

    Hi abgolf3,

The question may be how the new hard drive has been formatted.  Take a look at the way in which the reader is implemented by clicking Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > double-click on computer management > double-click storage.  Is all the space on the disk are responsible?  If so, take a look at these two documents for your problem:

    1. nobody said.  You could probably guess, after understand how the BONE back in the Simulator, as well as an estimate of 'normal' size app time 10-20 that apps could be preloaded.  I hope that you will be able to remove some of the preinstalled too stuff.

    2. it is extremely unlikely that the original will have the capacity to any host, as they more or less indicated that it will act as a slave only, at the beginning.  Later, they suggested that it is actually USB OTG (On The Go) that would use as a host, but on the only clue that Lazaridis, has been saying that they have the ability (read "could, if never set free us") to support Ethernet-over-USB.

    3. jump who

    4. I guess no..  One positive aspect of the statements on the issue have been in the 5th webcast, but I still think that they have kept their options open and these statements are not official.  Because they are good in the production of material and still did not mention of the GPS in the marketing of the statements or plug in anywhere, I tend to think that he has been left out.  Saddens me... but at least this way I'll be pleasantly surprised if it stops there, rather disappointed.  I'm pretty sure that they have a task they could put a GPS module, so maybe that will be in a later model but not the first... just a guess on my part.

  • QueryResultNotFoundException was lifted when a workflow is called in vsphere client web and select a cluster

    Hello

I use vsphere vCenter 6.0 and 6.0 Orchestrator vRealize. I save the vRO the vCenter in web client vRealize Orchestrator plugin.

VRO 6.0 here is a "Add host to cluster" workflow under vCenter-> Host-> check management. I have add this workflow in the web client, so that I can call him when I right-click on a cluster.

I run this workflow and select a cluster in the first stage, and click Next. An error like this:

com VMware.o11n.Sdk.QueryService.QueryResultNotFoundException: could not find the object of type 'VC:ClusterComputeResource' with the id 'WIN-VCENTER6.MYDOMAIN.COM/domain-c28 '.

I tried a few other env but get the same error. I also tried 5.5 and 5.5 vCO vCenter, and it worked fine.

Does anyone know if this is a bug or if I can avoid this error by configuring my env? Thanks in advance.

    Kind regards

    Vicky

    Hi Vicky,

When you have configured the server vCenter by vRO (using 'Add a vCenter server instance' the workflow), how did you address vCenter server - as an IP (for example. 10.20.23.34) or as a fully qualified hostname (eg. WIN-VCENTER6. MYDOMAIN.COM)? Please make sure that it was the last; If you have added your vCenters vRO using IP addresses or short host names, there might be a few problems, so you need to de-register the vRO vCenter and add them again.

  • Design of new environment VSphere, VMotion, Storage, NIC issues

I have a new environment I design. The plan is to have two host 5.1 running VSphere. Each host will have multiple servers requiring HA. I intend to have an additional Buffalo storage server. Here are my questions.

So that HA using Vmotion, will it store the data store of the virtual machine on the storage server? Or the data store would be on the host where the virtual machine, and then if this host fails it copies on?

NIC how would I need per server for HA? I count at least 3. One for the network traffic, management and SAN. All I'm missing?

OK, so if I put my two hosts in a HA cluster and I have my VM installed on a separate storage server and one of my crashes VSPhere hosts will be able to restart my virtual computer on the other host?

Yes, assuming that both hosts have access to the storage and HA is configured correctly.

And VMotion is just for a scheduled maintenance?

Not only for maintenance, but also for example load management/distribution.
