  I connected two computers, one running on windows xp sp2 and others running on windows xp sp3 via com using RS232 port via link Modem DFM-562E ++.
  I am able to dial numbers from a PC successfully.
  But when I do a direct link between them (one as a host, the other guest) through the com port, I get error 777.
  Is this because the two PC's using different service packs?

  It is not the service pack - although you should have installed sp3 now.

  Your message is not clear: have you been able to connect successfully computers using your modem D-Link?  How did you do that?  Will there be a modem in the second computer?

  What cable are you using to establish a direct connection between the com ports on both computers?  If you have purchased this cable online, please provide a link to the site where you bought it.

  Please describe the physical connection between the two computers.  For example, this is how you connect to the Internet by dial-up services:

  computer 1-{(9 broches) RS-232 serial port}-{RS-232 cable supplied with the modem}-{modem}-{phone cord (RJ-11 modular plugs at each end)}-{telephone wall jack}

  Hi, I have 3 computers on the network; two Vista and one running windows 7.  The computer of windows 7 can be placed in the network map (and I seem to be unable to it remote desktop).  This could be the cause?  I tried everything in the help documentation.  My router is a linksys 610n.  Computers have no NVIDIA cards or controllers.  Here's a screenshot of what I see in the network adapter:

  Have you used the Tool McAfee Consumer Product Removal?  If this is not the case, do.

  A very old (but XP has been around for a long time) message by Malke MVP MS:

  For XP, start by running the Network Setup Wizard the on all machines (see warning in section A below).

  Problems sharing files between computers on a network are usually caused by 1) a misconfigured firewall or a firewall neglected (including a dynamic firewall in a virtual private network); or (2) inadvertently run two firewalls such as the firewall of Windows and a third-party firewall. and/or (3) do not have accounts to the same users and passwords on all computers in the workgroup. (4) tries to create actions where the operating system does not.

  A. configure the firewall on all machines to allow traffic to local area network (LAN) as being approved. With the Windows Firewall, it means which allows file sharing / print on the Exceptions tab normally run the XP Network Setup Wizard will take care of this for these machines. The only "witch hunt", it will turn on the XPSP2 Windows Firewall. If you are not running a third-party firewall or you have an antivirus with "Internet Worm Protection" (like Norton 2006/07) which acts as a firewall, you're fine. With a third-party firewall, I usually set up the allocation of LAN with an IP address range. E.g. would be 192.168.1.0 - 192.168.1.254. Obviously you would substitute your correct subnet. Do not run more than one firewall. DON'T STOP FIREWALLS; CONFIGURE THEM CORRECTLY.

  (B) to facilitate the Organization, put all computers in the same workgroup. This is done from the System applet in Control Panel, the computer name tab.

  C. create the counterpart of the user accounts and passwords on all machines. You do not need to be logged into the same account on all machines and assigned to each user account passwords can be different; accounts/passwords just need to exist and to match on all machines. DO NOT NEGLECT TO CREATE PASSWORDS, EVEN IF ONLY OF SIMPLE. If you want a machine to boot directly to the desktop (a particular user account) for convenience, you can do this.   D. Si one or more of the computers is XP Pro or Media Center, turn off Simple file sharing (Folder Options > view tab).

  E. create share as you wish. XP Home does not share the users directory or the Program Files, but you can share folders inside those directories. A better choice is to simply use the Shared Documents folder. See the first link above for more information on Vista sharing.

  F. you have the job of file sharing (and tested by exchanging a file between machines), if you want to share a printer connected locally to one of your computers, share of this machine. Then go to the printer mftr Web site. and download the latest drivers for the correct system. Install them on the target machines. The printer must be collected during the installation procedure. If this isn't the case, install the drivers and then use the Add Printer Wizard. In some cases, printers must be installed as local printers, but it is outside this response.

  just install it on your laptop.

  When you sign in using your laptop, you will see a message about that there are already two activations and will give you the possibility to disconnect from the other two.  If you do so, you can then connect and turn on your laptop.

  or disconnection of one of your two currently active computers.  You can then install and activate on your laptop without having to log out of time your other computers.

  I just got a third pc... it is a laptop, the other two are of desktop computers.  Desktop computers have Windows XP as the operating system, the laptop has Windows Vista as operating system.  I also have another office in my house which is at the other end of the House.  It is a desktop computer with Windows XP as OS.  I've set up Belkin Wireless.  I had no problem, a couple of years connecting desktop to my Epson printer of no wireless via Belkin router, which is connected to my landline DSL.  I spent the last two weeks, trying to get my Dell laptop to bind in the ink-jet printer with no luck.  The laptop immediately recognized the router for internet access, but does not recognize the printer. I even got another printer and installed the drivers, but still no luck.  So now I try to connect my laptop and desktop (in a firm one) to the printer via the USB cords.  The printer has only a USB output.  How to tie two cords USB two different different PC with two operating systems in a printer? Is there a such a creature as a box of AB there, set up for USB that would help?  Sorry, it's so verbose.  Henry

  Hi Henry,.

  I have not seen a splitter you can connect 2 pc to a printer. BUT you should be able to print to it through the wireless network. The printer is actually connected to the router or is it connected to the XP computer connected to the router? If it is connected to the computer, you should be able to share the printer (using the XP printer setup utility) and connect the printer to the computer of the Vista laptop. Try the following:

  Go to the control panel. Choose a printer. Then choose Add a printer.

  Click Add a local printer. Click on create a new port. The default value in the drop-down list is Local Port. Don't change that. Click Next.

  A dialog box appears for you request that you enter a port name. Type the name of \\computer name\printer (IE. The computer name is the basement and the name of the printer is EpsonSty then I typed in \\basement\epsonsty

  I have two machines on a network.  You can access the second, but this machine cannot access the first.  When I go to my network places, I find the network indicated Local is not the same as the LAN on the network connections page.  The network connection page is good.  How can I delete the network connection incorrect which is registered by mistake on the My Network Places Page?

  You have (at least) two separate issues.

  For starters, what version of Windows, including the service pack is one of the computers?  What follows is based on the assumption that you have Windows XP on both, but it will make a difference if one or both are XP Home.

  My network places is not a very reliable tool.  It is not uncommon, for example, to see the shared folders appear under the heading 'Internet' instead of the 'Local network' section... Although such forgetfulness is eventually fixed that actually access you the various shared locations.

  It is not clear what you mean when you compare bookmarks network with network connections.  These two special folders show different things.  My network places is supposed to show the resources on a network.  In general, these are files shared folders or printers on your local network, although there is an option to include the real websites as well.

  Network connections, on the other hand, shows the real network cards installed on your computer.  It does not show the resources on a computer that can be connected through these devices.

  So, what do you mean by ' the LAN on the network connections page?  What do you see in my network places that you do not expect to see or what don't you see that you expect to see?

  My Network Places icons are a few shortcuts.  You can delete exactly as you would delete any other shortcut or file (press DEL or right click > delete).  They will be recreated, however, if they are still relevant shared resources.

  Inability to access a network to another computer is usually caused by a firewall misconfigured or failing to have a common (including the password) account on both machines.  In other words, if you connect to A machine as user Madcap, create a user named Madcap on the second machine.  Use the same password for both accounts.
