  • New retina iMac heats.

So I just upgraded my MBP to the top of the line 27 inch iMac Retina. In addition to a few minor problems, something that I noticed is the fan noise and heat from the iMac. Of the main reasons that I upgraded was because my MBP would burn my lap (or office) after about 3 minutes and do summer doing nothing more to boot the system. Essentially, the iMac was good. Now have a desktop computer, I decided to try to get a few games on my new computer. I downloaded Steam and booted up Smite. Subject to halfway through a football game, the fan is spent in speed and was clearly audible even on game noise, and when I felt the back of the computer (just below where the stand connects), I noticed that the area around the rear vent has been very warm to the touch. I know that Mac are not necessarily built for the games, but I thought maxing out the graphics processor when I bought the computer don't give me no problem playing a game such as Smite. (Admittedly, my knowledge of specifications and technical stuff is practically zero, so it was just me assuming that.) Should I worry about the computer being hot like this? The computer is less than a week, and I don't want to jeopardise his longevity by burning upwards. If there are ideas about how to prevent overheating without turning to a third party software, that would be great. I just want to know if the computer will be fine this treatment on a regular basis or if I should look back to another computer. Thank you!

Note: even outside of the game, it is always moderately hot in this area of the computer. Nothing too hot to the touch, but still seems to us excessive as not really using any juice on all programs or substantive functions.

First do a search on the web and install a controller of temperature on your new iMac.

I don't know what's available for OS X El Capitan.

For the time, anything more than 70 degrees C (160 degrees Fahrenheit or greater) is bad.

I always use a control software of fans for my older iMacs 2009 and 2010.

Again, do a web search for a software compatible with OS X El Cap control fans.

Guard SMC fan control always the fans run all the time on my older iMac.

I have the RPM value (between1500-1700 RPM) kind of feeding my iMac and the GPU diode (these are the hottest components of equipment running in an iMac) stay, more or less, in the range of 45-50 degrees C. This brings time and my hard drive CPU below 40 degrees C (less than 100 degrees Fahrenheit).

The key is to not to run the internal fans at a speed that transforms them by sucking dust vacuums.

    iMacs heat!

    VERY HOT!

Apple is too fixed on chassis and quiet computer operation more thin and thinner than on the question of if rather excessive internal heat builds up inside any computer Mac is sufficient to cause the early, premature component failures.

Heat is the ENEMY of all electronic component small hardware!

I like the idea of my iMac slow roasting its internal components, AT ALL!

iMacs is WAY TOO hot for my comfort and too hot to suspected is not that many component failures hardware iMac maybe heat associated with. Premature failure especially in the optical drive, internal hard drive AND GPU early or logic board failures.

In addition to the implementation of internal fans control software,

Go out and buy like a small desk fan (something like Vornado fans) and place it in the back near the area that gets the hottest.

That's what I did and it allows for my iMac run more fees.

You will not have a silent computer longer, but your iMac will certainly run cooler and, perhaps, to extend its longevity.

    Good luck!

  • New 27 "iMac / 5 can be used as a monitor for MacMini 2010 k?

I'm interested in the iMac 27 "screen of 5K, but would need to use it as a monitor for a mid-2010 Mac Mini server as well. These two computers would serve in the same office, essentially for two different reasons, so I need to switch back once or twice a day. I don't want two screens on the same desktop.

I knew the targeting mode screen does not work with the iMac 27 '' new. Is it possible to do what I have not discovered?

    Nope.

  • I'm new on iMac, a lot of questions.

I have, after 20 years of Windows, made the leap to everything Apple. I had all the other devices (iPhone, iPad, etc) for a few years and finally got an iMac. It's a mid-2011 21.5 "model low spec in entry for me. I had it a few days and put everything in place as well as an upgrade of the El Capitan.

There will be a lot of questions, so I'll post them in this thread instead of making several for each topic. The biggest problem is that I don't know anyone with an iMac to help me and even if I have a question I don't know the terminology to explain my question to the public online. So, having said that, my questions will be very simplistic in the wording of the description.

The bar downstairs, the dock, I believe it is called, features icons (apps?) and in some, there is a black dot. What is this point?

I was very surprised to see the word "Windows" in the menu bar at the top of the screen. What do you call this bar at the top of the screen?

There are 18 000 + photos on my Windows PC, if I move all these images the iCloud iMac will fill them to my other devices? Do I have a choice as to what photos I want to be on every device?

I don't see anywhere a reference to the video or video app on the iMac. I have videos on an external hard drive I want to import on the iMac or I have to keep on the external hard drive? It is a Western Digital and I'm not even sure that its format will work with Apple.

How can I turn off the monitor with the keyboard (2009)? Has it a function Alt + F4 to close a window? The F4 key, I get what he's called Launchpad. However, the key F3 that spread out the windows on the screen, which is that the called function?

Where can I find my "recent items" like on Windows menu start?

How do I get Numbers, Pages, and Keynote on the iMac because they are on my iPhone and iPad?

Well, that's it for a start, but I know that there will be a lot more questions so please be patient with me. Thanks in advance for the help!

The black dot means that the execution of the program indicated by the icon

The bar upstairs is the menu bar

If you have enabled the iCloud photo library, you can import your pictures to the pictures on the iMac and they will be loaded in iCloud, know as 18 000 images may take a very long time to load (days or weeks)

Any other device using iCloud photo library will get the whole thing, an option is not available with device.

You cannot turn off the monitor

Recent Articles are visible under the small Apple (top left of the menu bar)

Pages etc. can be purchased from the Mac App store.

  • Adding new RAM iMac 27 "mid-2011

    Hello

My iMac is very slow. I have 4 GB of internal RAM and you want to update. I'm not sure (without opening things), if the 4 GB of RAM is 2 x 2GB or just the only card of 4 GB.

Can I add 2 x 8 GB to the existing RAM to give me a total of 20 GB? Or can I add 2 x 4 GB to the existing RAM meet up with 12GB.

I'm continuing my mac to run CC photoshop, illustrator and indesign (usually all open at the same time).

What anti static should precautions I take?

You can check by yourself with the CrucialAdvisory tool, or OWC. They are two reliable suppliers. You could use an anti-static wristband, but who would exaggerate, IMO. I have never. It is really easy on an iMac.

  • I'm new on iMac, been using PC

My wife wants to transfer iTunes to a new Mac, we buy.  She advises him to copy the account on an external HDD that I ordered it. The HD is formatted for Mac.  All his music is of a CD she downloaded on iTunes. I was advised at an Apple store, only music purchased via iTunes would be available on the new Mac.

    How to make this happen?

Moving a library: quick response if you use preferences by default iTunes settings: copy the folder integer iTunes (and to ensure that all of its subfolders and files) intact at the other disk, hold down the option/alt key (shift on Windows) keys to start iTunes and on request to select a library select iTunes Library.itl file in the copied folder.

When it's to a new computer put the iTunes folder copied to the default location of Macintosh HD > users > * user name * > music (or home > music) so you don't even have to start with the down option, iTunes will automatically look for what it y.  (Make sure that it is no anything already in the iTunes folder it that you want to keep because you will replace it with the one you are moving).  Don't forget to authorize computer in iTunes to your Apple ID if you use it to synchronize with Apple devices or play multimedia DRM protected (e.g., movies).

Some elements used in iTunes related activities are not stored in the iTunes library folder, but in special folders.  If you move a library to another computer, you can copy these too:

    -Music Apple file cache: http://dougscripts.com/itunes/2015/09/new-flush-apple-music-cache-files/

-device iOS, various preferences files backups: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3285925

Windows users see tip to: https://discussions.apple.com/message/18879381#18879381

You can move everything from your Windows PC to your Mac in a single movement, including your iTunes library: on Windows Migration Assistant - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4796 - learn how to use Windows Migration Assistant to migrate files from a Windows PC on a Mac.  Extra tip by Ludovic 05/2014 - https://discussions.apple.com/message/28178940#28178940

Note that Windows cannot write to Mac disks to the format without special commercial software. Leave the drive in NTFS format for the transfer of the library. Windows can write in it and Mac can read. If you want to use the drive with the mac in the future, you should consider then reformat.

  • Using the scanjet 3110 with new iMac

I try to get my Scanjet 3110 to work with my new 27 "iMac, OS 10.8.3.  I followed the instructions on the HP re website: drivers, updates, etc..  However, when I run the HP software, I get the error message on shooting/activate the device, etc.  I tried all the solutions suggested to no effect.

My iMac recognizes the scanner and will work when I install the software of the ICA for the Capture of the Image, but using that software does not give me the functionality of HP so I can scan slides, scan several photos at the same time, etc.
