NIC Teaming in ESX 3.5

Hello group,

I have two boxes of esx with 4 NICs in each.

Currently, I am only using two of the four NICs for each box of esx.

I use 1 for the core of the vm network adapter and 1 network card for the service console of network/vm for each box of esx.

How do you propose that I take two network cards available for every box of physics.

If I create a team for the network of the vm, I can do on the fly, and what I have to do something about guests?

Also, I read that this grouping only works for outbound traffic? Can someone explain?

Thanks in advance!

Best practice would be to have redundancy for the network of the virtual machine and the management network - you can do it on the fly and nothing should be done to guests (which I assume you mean virtual machines) with settings by default, you must restart the virtual machines to take advantage of the second NETWORK card - until then you'll have to gas be in active standby mode.

Outgoing is only an indication that the ESX Server has no control on the inbound traffic - it can select which network of phyiscal card to send traffic

  • NIC teaming on ESX 5.1 and NGC failover

    Hi all

A quick question. I know I read it before, but I can't find the reference again once. What is the recommended setting between allow vNic activate failover on cisco UCS and strategy setting on ESX 5.1 of the network?

I know that I had read somewhere when the grouping of network cards is configured on ESX failover authorized UCS, ESX goes haywire if a path is lost the UCS.

Our installation program running on UCS 2.04 Manager has with a mixture of blades M2 and M3 with M81kr and 1240/1280 cards respectively.

Never use a fabric with a hypervisor vswitch failover. Let the failover of the vSwitch handle network failure mechanism.

For ESX once you have two NICs attached to the vSwitch or a DVS it will automatically load balance and failover. You don't want you combine this with the UCS fabric failover.

  • doubt with nic teaming on ESX

guys, if we have a vswitch for virtual machines with two or multiple network cards and a virtual machine running on it there are switched to the other NICs if a network card fails. We have deafult settings link only configured state.

When I check from esxtop commands it shows vmnic1 that was used for the virtual machines even though I have two cards active network for the virtual machine. We have 1 and 2 for a vswitch vmnic and on which we have virtual machines are is classified first vm takes second vmnic1 takes a third vmnic2 one shot vmnic3 and so on. So suppose that will be my vmnic1 of fails for some reason any it automatically turn on to vmnic2 if we deafult status for the selected link. I have this confusion for a long time, but I forgot to ask here.

No, you can't control the way to configure a predefined order of failover. Everything that you could do is configure vmnic as ensures NICs, which would be used in case of failure. However, personally I don't see much sense in the establishment of a NETWORK card in standby mode. For me, it makes more sense to have all NICs active for a better distribution of the workload.

  • Are these viable designs for NIC teaming on UCS C-Series?

Is this a viable design on ESXi 5.1 on UCS C240 with 2 Quad port nic cards?

Option A) VMware consolidation of NIC with the load balancing of interfaces vmnic in an configuration active/active through alternate and redundant physical paths to the network.

Option B) VMware consolidation of NIC with the load balancing of the interfaces in a configuration vmnic Active/Standy by alternate and redundant paths of material to the network.

    Option A:

    Option B:

    Thank you.

She really comes down to what means active/active N ° and type of switches upstream.  For ESXi NIC teaming - Active/Active load balancing provided the opportunity for all network links be active for devices different comments.  Grouping can be configured in a few different methods.  The default value is by ID of virtual port where each guest computer is assigned to an active port and then also a spare port.  Traffic to this host would be only sent on a connection at a time.

For example, suppose 2 Ethernet connections and 4 guests on the ESX host.  Link 1 for switch 1 would be active for 1 and 2 and 2 link to switch 2 backup for 1 and 2.  However 2 link to switch 2 would be active for 3 guests and 4 and 1 link 1 switch backup for 1 and 2 comments.

The following provides details on the configuration of the card NETWORK is teaming up with VMWare:

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalID=1004088

There are also opportunities for LACP configuration in some situations, but there is a material special considerations on the side of the switch, but also on the host side.

Keep in mind that the vSwitch does not blindly broadcast/multicast/unknown unicast on all ports.  He has a strict set of rules that prevents loopback.  It is not a traditional L2 redirector so loops are not taken into account in an active/active environment.

  • Override the port NIC teaming with powercli group?

    Hi all

Any chance you could lend a hand?

I have a powercli script that goes out to all of my ESX 4.0 host and add a new port group to vswitch1 with a new VLAN ID. That works well, but I also need to override the NIC teaming on this port group, to set an active NIC and the other to be the backup. (we put NIC failover port groups not the vswitches).

I see ways to change NIC vswitches grouping settings, but am yet to find a way to change the settings of the NIC collection for groups of ports themselves with powercli?

    Can someone shine a light?

    Thank you

    Try something like:

    Get-VirtualPortGroup-name '' | Get-NicTeamingPolicy | Game-NicTeamingPolicy - MakeNicActive "vmnic1" - MakeNicStandby "vmnic0".

    I hope this helps!

  • NIC teaming and aggregation rate

    Hello

I need help on configuring NIC teaming on our ESX. We have a HP Server with 6 network adapters I already configured the vSwitch for VMkernal, VMotion and Service Console.

Now, since the ESX will run at various Web servers I want to do is aggregate throughput of EPS of 1 GB to give me a flow of 4 GB total. What I've done is created a vSwitch and alllocated 4 NICs to the switch and created a port called 'Prod LAN' and receives the NIC 4, also on our Cisco switch I trunked 4 ports.

What else do I need to do to make sure that I have configured correctly the NICs, so that when we assign the network adapters on the virtual Web server computer it can use aggregate 4 GB throughput. Also that I also want to make sure, if some fail NIC 1,2 or 3, I always have speed on the port.

    Thank you very much...

Duncan has identified the problem above with what you are proposing.  You may agree with your config if a physical switch entire fails but as stated above, if you lose an single link on one of the aggregates that ESX will add a unique link from the passive cluster causing the switch to become crazy.

  • NIC teaming on HP Blade

I use HP Blades as my servers to host ESX 3.5 update 3. I have only 2 NETWORK ports on each host and I would like to implement the NIC teaming, but I'm confused on whether I would run into any problems if the vmnic should fail.

I set up vswtich0 with three groups of ports - the primary NETWORK card for my Console Service (VLAN12) and port groups Vmotion (VLAN3) is vmnic0 with vmnic1 failover

I also created another group of ports for the VMservers vmnetwork (no VLANs) on vswitch0 with vmnic1 as a principal port with vmnic0 my failover group.

What concerns me, is the port group settings switch to vmnic1? For example, if vmnic0 tilt vmnic1, will I run into issues because the Service Console is running on VLAN12 and Vmotion works on VLAN3, and vice versa with the port vmnetwork group.

    Hello

You will need to implement VST where you master all the VLAN to the vSwitch through each Teddy.

  • NIC Teaming Poweredge R420

    Hello:

I am collecting information to configure NIC teaming on my server Dell poweredge r420.

Other posts I've read it is mandatory, installing broadcom software and update the firmware of the NIC (Broadcom Netxtreme gigabit ethernet).

I can't find the broadcom advanced control suite window to set up the consolidation of network cards.

    Can someone help me?

You can access the Web from Broadcom site and download it here: http://www.broadcom.com/support/ethernet-nic-netxtreme-i-server or there are updates on the Dell Web site: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/Product/poweredge-r710?driverId=2T17H&osCode=WS8R2&fileId=2961022443#

  • UCS C200 and NIC Teaming/FailOver

As UCS C200 with management of a 10/100 and 10/100/two interface 1000 interfaces and PCIe with 4NIC

I want to install CUCM 8.5 is the NIC Teaming/failover supported by UCS C200 and how to set up the NIC Managment interface with failover?

    Thank you.

    Hello

As you install apps from the CPU on the server of the UCS, speech application team listed their recommendations here.

    http://docwiki.Cisco.com/wiki/QoS_Design_Considerations_for_Virtual_UC_with_UCS#Guidelines_for_Physical_LAN_Links.2C_Trunking_and_Traffic_Sizing

You can create a NIC teaming in the ESXi via vSphere client software for traffic from from / destined for virtual machines.

For C200, we have only one management port and if you use the management for MMIC traffic port, switch option is not available.

However, if you choose to use host for MMIC traffic NETWORK ports, you can set up CIMC NIC mode for 'LOM shared' which provides the NIC teaming options.

  • ISE Cisco 3395 NIC Teaming/redundancy

Is it possible to implement the consolidation of NETWORK cards on a 3395, I see that it is available on the SNS 3400 series? However, I was unable to locate any information about NIC grouping for purposes of redundancy on of the 3395. This feature is taken in charge, and if so, how I would approach him allowing of correctly? Thank you very much for the help in advance.

Hello. For now, ISE does not support the NIC teaming/pipe of any kind. It asked that several times so I hope that Cisco will implement in a future version.

  • iSCSI / vmkernel multipathing vs NIC teaming

    Hello

I know of Configuration of VMware SAN Guide provides information about how to configure iSCSI multipath with vmkernel interfaces double on various uplinks.

What are the disadvantages of using basic NIC teaming instead? Just an interface of vmkernel on a vswitch (d) with two uplinks. It will work properly about redundancy and failover?

    Kind regards

I guess the difference is while using "Port Binding" iSCSI initiator uses vSphere Pluggable Storage Architecture to handle the load balancing/redundancy, that can make better use of multiple paths to NETWORK card available. Otherwise, the initiator will use vmkernel stack ensures redundancy network and balancing in the same way as a normal network traffic.

I suggest that you look at the great post on iSCSI multi-vendor, I think the 2 statements below will summarize the difference:

    "

    • However, the biggest gain of performance allows the storage system to scale the number of network adapters available on the system. The idea is that multiple paths to the storage system can make better use multiple paths, he has at his disposal than the consolidation of NETWORK cards on the network layer.
    • If each physical NETWORK adapter on the system looks like a port to a path to the storage, the storage path selection policies can make best use of them.

  • NIC teaming with the IP hash load balancing

    Hi guys

I have a virtual machine with a VMXNET3 10 Gbps. It is usually have a heavy traffic with a special server and saturate one of my two physical NIC of 1 Gbps in its PortGroup. I want to know what's going to happen if I turn on "NIC Teaming for this portgroup with basic IP hash load balancing". In my case the source IP address and destination are not change so the aggregates of traffic between my two physical network adapters?

To avoid saturating completely the two 1GbE NIC, it can also be useful to look in charge based on the grouping and the NIOC. It will ensure that the other streams of traffic VM are not crushed by this machine a virtual when it saturates a network card. The disadvantage is that it requires Enterprise Plus licenses (using a dvSwitch).

  • NIC expresscard on esx - is it possible?

    Hi all

On a lab, I only have two powerful laptops (Sager D900F) but with only 1 nic, is it possible to add either an Express card Gigabit NIC on an esx or a USB Ethernet device connected directly to the esx.

If so, as everyone else has managed to do, in this case, what model, for example.

    Thank you

There is NOT much choice for the ExpressCard NIC there (in GB at least)... You will have to choose one, try and see...

Personally, I wouldn't use any laptop for ESX/ESXi running... There's just too many questions that might come up to go down this path (you have already reached the first road block)...

You will find a lot more people using VMware Workstation to run ESXi facilities nested in try to bare metal on the laptops...

Personally, you won't find me trying to launch a laboratory using any laptop... Especially when you consider what you spend on a laptop which is close to the power you need (and functions), you can get a good equipped workstation class Tower, which will do the job without problems (or with less far, far, away)...

I do have a vCenter Server in my lab, I connect to when remote (and need to check something in my lab)... It's also a solution viable, even when it is remote... You can get a decent connection by your ISP speed (I do symmetrical 35Mbps) provided... All serious work, is done when I'm on the spot... As ISO download new files for installs, or anything that would require a transfer of large files my system to the host or store data.
