No .exe file will open.

My friend's computer had a virus pop up. I used malwarebytes to remove it. Everything is normal, except that every time I try to open a program with the .exe, windows says "what program you want to use to open this file? For example when I try to open internet explorer, I get this message, then a list of programs of your choice. I choose internet Explorer in the list, and then I get the dialog box that says: "do you want to run or save this file?" (iexplorer.exe). I click on run, and I get the message "this program would you use to open this file?" again, goes in a cycle. The computer is a fairly old Dell, but it is not getting used a lot except for facebook, and probably _ (where the constant malware it gets).

Hey got a fix. I used a .reg file to the executable fix. Save ALL text below in a .txt file, then change to. Reg. name it whatever you like and add to the registry:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.exe]
[- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\secfile]
[- HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\secfile]
[- HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe\shell\open\command]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command]
@="\"%1\" %*"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe]
@= "exefile".
"Content Type"="application/x-msdownload".

    Hello

Were there any changes made on the computer before the show?

This problem may occur when you accidentally change parameters of type for the file .exe in Folder Options. Sometimes it can happen because of the virus also.

    Method 1:
I suggest you try the procedure described in the link and check if it helps.

When you run an .exe on a Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7 computer file, the file can start another program

Important: This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems can occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you proceed with caution. For added protection, back up the registry before you edit it. Then you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. Method 2:
If the problem persists you can scan your computer anti-virus using the Microsoft Safety Scanner.

Microsoft safety scanner will help us to get rid of software viruses, spyware and other malicious software.

The Microsoft Security Scanner is a downloadable security tool for free which allows analysis at the application and helps remove viruses, spyware and other malware. It works with your current antivirus software.

    http://www.Microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

Note: The Microsoft Safety Scanner ends 10 days after being downloaded. To restart a scan with the latest definitions of anti-malware, download and run the Microsoft Safety Scanner again.

Warning: If you run the antivirus program that is infected by the virus scan will get deleted. Therefore, reinstall the program. Also, if files and folders are affected by the virus, while they might even get deleted.

It's extremely likely that your computer is clean and who knows what you deleted in the registry. The most practical thing and time-effective to do would be to backup your data and do a clean install of Windows. • All my .exe files will open in the same program, how can I solve this problem?

I double clicked a .exe program and she appeared with an error saying that it was not a correct path, so I right click on it hung over 'Open with' clicked "choose program by default" found and selected it clicked OK, and I don't see the "Always" use the selected program to open this type of file until after I clicked OK , but now all my .exe programs open the same and the .exe .lnk changed, I was about to restore my computer to the previous version, but none of them go back far enough, what should I do to cancel the default program?

Darn, I was hoping that the registry itself would correct after a reboot. I always try to this for you. Following is a somewhat similar to what was posted by hetti:

However, this does not mean you're going to in the registry. You create a file that will do the registry work for you. According to this link, the fixittool only works for Vista.

    Hello

When you get this program you want to use to open the file, you can select the appropriate program to open it?  If so, isn't there a box to check that says always use this program...

Network adapter. Missing drivers?  Go to your device manager and look to see if there is lack of device drivers. They can be labeled as just a controller ethenet or other device with a small exclamation point.

This means that they need a driver. In order to send you the link to the right driver, I need to know what model of network card you have.

If you are unsure, click on all the missing devices in Device Manager. Then click on the Details tab. In the property drop-down list, select the second element (Hardware ID). After the first string of characters you see.

Who will be ID the make and model of the device and I can send you the link for the drivers.

  • former Illustrator files will open only in the form of Simple Text Documents

I went back to an old project Adobe Illustrator I have not opened for years but suddenly need to recovery. To my horror, I discovered that I can not open ONE of these old files HAVE. In the finder, each of these files is shown not as an .ai file, but as a "simple text document. When opening, it does is display a text code page, not my graphics HAVE. I'm currently running AI CS5 on Mac OSX 10.8.5. I would greatly appreciate all useful advice - what someone might have on this subject. Y at - it HAVE a plug-in available for update old files? No matter what?

    Thanks for your help!

    Frank Gresham

Hi everyone who responded, or interested:

I think I found the fix, courtesy of the Mac guru at the University where I teach. If I just add the suffix .ai on behalf of all of my files, they instantly change to read Adobe Illustrator files! Couldn't be simpler, although it raises a question. These files will open very well without needing to be done with the file at the end of each title designations. Now, suddenly, they need ".ai" after them to open properly. Well. At least, I have a solution to this problem.  Thanks for all the good advice!

  • CS1 files will open in the later versions of CS, such as CS4 and 5?

I'm still working in CS1, but becomes nervous about the March of time with Creative Suite. I don't know if future versions of the CS will be open my files, in particular Photoshop and InDesign files. I'll appreciate sincerely any info on this.

I have a mac G5 running Tiger. (I realize I cannot use CS5 with it, but I'm always interested to know if my files would be toast with CS5 or feasible if I had a Mac Intel.)

Yes, these files will open in the new versions of the same applications.

  • My WinXP is damaged-exe files will not open

Apparently damaged by VJT.exe and my .exe programs will not load or run. I get the 'Open with' box or a file not found. I am able to run the programs with the .com suffix. Please tell me what to do to solve this problem. Is this some sort of file association problem? My AVG antivirus was quarintined VJT.exe.

    Hi Systemwhiz,

You will need to rename regedit.exe to regedit.com (my computer-> tools-> option-> view file-> remove tickmark to "Hide extension for known file types"-> ok-now right click on local disk C:\WINDOWS\ online search of regedit.exe rename regedit.com).

Then click on Start-> Run Type &-> Regedit-> ok.

    Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\Exefile\Shell\Open\Command
(you will have to press on + to achieve order)

Now, double-click default slot right windows and then change the value in this box for '%1' % *.

    Repeat the same for HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Exefile\Shell\Open\Command

Close regedit, restart your pc and check if its working.

  • Each exe file I open me gives a "corrupted file... run chkdsk', but the analysis of virus and malware are clean?

    Hello

I'm completely puzzled here. When I started my computer today I got a notification saying one of the start-up programs exe file has been corrupted. I think that "uhoh". Then my antvirus software is dΘmarre with the same and I get the notification that I'm not running and antivirus. Then I realize counts all exe files I click gives me the error "file is corrupted... Please run chkdsk" appear in the taskbar. At this point, I am thinking virus or malware.

Some programs still work even with the corrupted message, but every exe, whether old or newly downloaded, will give me this corrupt message. Also, when I tried to reinstall my anti-virus, he wouldn't. (I'm under Avast Internet Security Pro).

I found myself downloading AVG free and for some reason any that exe is not being corrupt. So I at least have a running antivirus software now.

I scanned my whole system with AVG with the latest virus definitions, and it sees no virus. I run only Malwarebytes with the latest updates... nothing there either.

Is my computer clean? For me this seems unlikely, but there is something that is not a virus or malicious software that could cause this?

Also, I started in safe mode, and it makes exactly the same thing. Each exe is corrupt when I open it.

I am all of these ideas, except to the reformat.

    Thank you

    Mike

I don't see you mention on running "chkdsk".
    So, do you?

How to run the check disk (chkdsk)... assuming you are using Vista

Start button > Search box, type cmd > look up, right-click on cmd.exe > Run As Administrator >

in the black and white window, at the command prompt flashes, type chkdsk/f/r > press the Enter key.
Note: there is a space between 'chkdsk' and ' / '.
The screen will say something like cannot do it now, but you want to run it on reboot. Click on 'y' as in Yes > press > window cmd of output.

Restart your computer. It will take a while. DO NOT stop the machine. Just wait.

  • executable files (.exe files) are opened in Adobe reader.

    • My friend, I don't understand how he did it, changed the .exe on its computer files settings. He says, click with the right button on a file .exe, selected option «openwith...» "and chose the adobe reader software. Now all .exe files are being opened on the adobe reader, including the filesystem as guest, paint, calculator, browsers, uninstaller etc. Now, we can not even uninstall the adobe reader software, since even the unistaller is an exe file and will open in adobe reader. System Restore does not work. What can I do to help him?

    Hi Christophe,

If you can access the internet somehow, if you are using Vista, go to http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/06/22/reset-and-fix-broken-windows-vista-file-ext-and-type-associations-include-exe-com-sys-zip-lnk-folder-drive/ and scroll to the EXE and click or double-click it to run the program to restore EXE file associations. Once done, do the same for LNK entry. That should restore your programs. If you are using Windows 7, go to http://www.SevenForums.com/tutorials/19449-default-file-type-associations-restore.html . If you are using XP, go to http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm.

If no internet access, copy the appropriate reg entries to a flash drive on another computer, transfer to Office the 'bad' computer to and run them from there to make the changes.  Reboot and you should be good to go.

If it still does not help, try the following guide to our Member Brian M - which shows four methods that can be used to fix the Windows file associations.

    I hope this helps.

  • .bat file changed in an .exe file that opens a file linked to the main program does not open after packed

    Here's what's happening.

I have an add on package I wanted to pack with a main program.  The problem is that the add-on is not an .exe file so I had to make a .bat file to open it, which, unfortunately, is not recognized as a user entry point.   So I converted the file .bat to .exe file so that I could create a user to this file entry point.

It is a situation similar to opening a word document and it will automatically open Microsoft word.  Only in my case I create a batch file for this word document and then convert it into a .exe file so I could create a user for this document entry point.

So in my case after it's all packed to the top and I run the user entry point, I get an error could not open file.  Is that what I would call a linked file?  I'm packing up under copy writing/isolation mode and not in merged mode.

    Any ideas?

    Hi Christopher2222,

In most cases, you won't need to run the application during the capture process. In some scenarios it will probably a solution to set some values "first round" for an application.

In this case, you try to start a batch (bat) file. All Thinstall/ThinApp scenarios with a bat file to add this to your package.ini

    giveitaname.exe

    Source=%SystemSystem%\cmd.exe

    Shortcut = YourPackageContainer.dat

    CommandLine=%SystemSystem%\cmd.exe/k C:\PathToYourBatchFile\start.bat OptionalParameter1 OptionalParameter2

The UNC path is not recommended.
