  Mute key functionality is provided by IDT Audio software, so the problem may be that Windows 8 has installed a reference driver that does not contain.  Often, the Windows 7 version works Ok, so I would try downloading and installing the following driver IDT.

  Hello I got my pc for more than 3 years and just discovered this forum!

  If you do not source of the sound, try to close each of the open windows on your computer one by one and see then when the sound stops and don't forget not what window you closed last before the sound stops.   If the crackling noise is not using headphones while this question must relate to speakers

  You should sett 'Power' Mode for the soundcard for "No. Power Savings.

  Start-> Control Panel-> Sound Max-> power management. Change the Mode 'Power' of 'Economies of normal energy' (default) or 'High energy savings' to 'No Power Savings'. Then it should work!
