Old computer died, and Microsoft still has the key as being active.

When I installed Windows Vista Ultimate Edition on a new computer, (purchased from the U.S. Government so he came with no operating system), I tried to activate Vista and I was told the product key is already in use. Well, it's not that the computer no longer exists. Maybe I should try to bypass the router wireless in the House? I sent an e-mail to Microsoft and have yet to receive response.

Hi danpage0,

It is a standard procedure, all intent and purpose, the key is in fact still being used on your old machine. There is no way to disable by simply saying he's dead. However, there is no problem. All you need to do is use the phone option and your copy of Windows will be reactivated. See this link from my Web site: http://vistasupport.mvps.org/product_key_already_in_use.htm

This forum post is my own opinion and does not necessarily reflect the opinion or the opinion of Microsoft, its employees or other MVPS.
