License available when one of the ESX Server is in maintenance mode
The available license count changes if ESX Server is added in maintenance mode? I think that the answer is Yes, but I want to be sure of it. Unfortunately I can't test this in my environment.
I have ESX 3.5 update 5 and VC upadate 6
Thank you
I just tested it, and the number of licenses available for my 3.5 servers has not changed after that one has been placed in maintenance mode. I wouldn't really expect him if she is always powered, but unfortunately I can't supply a stop for the moment.

Lost ESX Server shared data store
Hello
I can't find the data store shared in one of my ESX Server. And I try to rescan and may find the logic unit number but just can't find the shared data store. This is the channel san fibre storage system.
Is it possible to return the lost shared data store?
Thanks in advance!

You mean it must be confirmed if the partition table is OK first? But how to confirm...
Just run this command:
fdisk-l
You should see your LUN with a VMFS (type fb) partition.

ESX Server 3.5 - strange time problems
Hello world
What is the final location, installing a new server ESX will pull its time to go? It seems complete weird for me! I just reinstalled the server that I use for testing because the clocks on my hosts are out of sync with ESX server 3 hours. I know this only because whenever I restarted the clocks would become out of sync even once, I would manually fix them but if I restarted, then they would be out of sync again on restart.
So I decided to start all over again and reinstalled. I also noticed that the time on the BIOS was out of sync by 3 hours, so I fixed that, then during the installation, I used the GUI and ensured to this that all settings are correct. I started and submitted my top vmdk files. Add a server to the inventory and ba-boom, it's always an hour out of sync! If I put it to an internet time server synchronization in windows, it corrects itself, but is incorrect once again after a reboot.
If I use VMWARE tools to synchronize with the host computer then the time is an hour off the coast.
Please keep in mind, I'm a windows guy, this great process of setting the time using putty is a little hard to swallow. Is there not an easier way to simply see what time the host uses and correct?
Thank you.
First when you install it gets it from the BIOS. Then when you have done this, you will want to configure NTP on the HOST. This by going to the tab "configuration" and then "time Setup". You can use the following internet time servers (just put you company firewall or something else allowing of course) 0.pool.ntp.org 1.pool.ntp.org 2.pool.ntp.org. The implementation is very easy and it will make sense to you that you do. Also, it will make ESX for NTP firewall when you submit.
So you want if sure is installed on your windows guests and the value of the box sync with the machine virtual host of the vm tool. Important, disable the windows time service.
Do this and your windows host will keep time properly.

VirtualCenter is necessary to put in place the virtual machine on an ESX Server?
Hello! I'm new to VMWare and and I'm trying to implement some virtualized servers. I have a machine I want to run a virtual machine with Windows Server 2008 and a virtual machine with Arch Linux. I have a copy of vSphere 4.0 and ESX Server operating system linux installed correctly on the server computer. I tried to use the Infrastructure Client from my desktop Windows 7 Professional to create the new virtual machine, but I get to the part 'Select the data store' in the wizard and shows me that I have not created from data stores. I have not found a way to create databases in client infrastructure, and most things on the internet speak do with VirtualCenter.
I tried to install the VirtualCenter on Windows 7 server, and initially, I got the error when he could not find the ADAM directory. Then I installed the version of Windows 7 to ADAM, ADLDS, who created c:\Windows\Adam and seemed to be backward compatible enough to allow installation to get a little further, how it failed and said that he was unable to create an instance of directory services.
I fought this thing and Googling all the problems that I ran now for more than 48 hours. I was hoping that since I don't have more than one physical server to manage, and I don't have a dedicated machine which can be VirtualCenter Server all the time anyway (my office is dualbooted with linux, where I spend most of my time), it would be possible to do without.
Any help appreciated,
Matt
Hi and welcome to the forum,
you don t need a vCenter if you have a single server. You can use the vSphere Client to manage the server.
If I understand you, you have already installed the ESX Server and a local data store.
Now you can download the vSphere Client by opening the Web page of your ESX Server. Type http://<> > address >
Install the Client and you are able to create Virtual Machines.
You can also use the ESXi Version.
But I recommend you read some VMware papers like this
http://www.VMware.com/PDF/vSphere4/r40_u1/vsp_40_u1_esxi_i_get_start.PDF

Adding 2nd NIC killed ESX Server
All,
Thank you for taking the time to read my post. Here are the environment and then my question.
3 - DELL R510 - Dual Core Quad - Intel systems
The area has "2" Integrated NIC
as well as "2" QUAD Port - PCI Intel network interface cards
NIC 0 - integrated NETWORK card is a system where installed- and it is plugged into a standard Switch CISCO GIG, the tag VLAN 108
NIC 1 - integrated is configured for iSCSI connectivity
LOCATION 0 - Port Quad PCI NIC
Port # 3 is connected to a GROUP of CIRCUITS on a CISCO SWITCH with VLAN 108, 104, 107 and 110 on it
Port # 1 is used for the 2nd iSCSI connection
LOCATION 1 - Port Quad PCI NIC
# 7 port is connected to a different GROUP of CIRCUITS on a CISCO SWITCH with VLAN 108, 104, 107 and 110 on it
All three servers are installed with ESX4 update 1
When I go into vCenter to one of the three servers and go to the primary Switch virtual networking, if I add #3 NIC or Port #7 NIC to the virtual switch (it currently integrated NIC 0 in) the system disconnects the network and to connect to vCenter losses and the entire network. If physically I reboot the ESX Server, it is NOT on the network. I have the tag VLAN in NIC0 defined 4095 to accept all the VLANS as well. (I tried with and without the tag of VLAN 4095 - same result)
Here are my questions:
1 - Why is - what happens? How it should be configured?
2. is there a way to get NIC0 to return to the network without having to re - install ESX?
I reinstalled the boxes several times now and tried many variations of combinations of nic, and they all end up with the ESX Server disconnected from the network and does not.
Really looking for some common sense here... Please and thank you.
Hmmmm, shooting a little in the dark, but I think your next 2 steps are:
(1) get the SC (vswif0) MAC and check your MAC address table switch to fly throughout of ports
(2) on the console, use esxcfg-vswitch for uplink associated with the Group of port SC the first list, and then delete the 2nd network card. This should get your SC direct return and leave the new map available NETWORK the vswitch, simply not group ports SC. (And you don't have to reinstall :-).)
Virtualization of happy!

Hi all, first post on VM Community Council.
I use the PC for about 2 years and I start looking to ESX server.
One thing, I want to clarify the performance issue.
This is a case that I got here:
We have 3 Dell PowerEdge 2900 III with exactly the same hardware configuration:
1 quad Core Intel® Xeon® E5450, 2x6MB Cache, 3.0 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB
4 GB 667 MHz (4x1Go), DIMMs unique access
Windows 2003 Enterprise Server
An application server
Only one DB server
A single server for 'other' purposes
We need to reproduce the same configuration 3 times.
So instead of buying new hardware, it would be realistic to install ESX server on each server and to create 3 VMs (with the same specifications of 'material' as their original conterpart) per server and still get a reasonable rate of return?
As I said I'm not currently using ESX and I couldn't find a 'clear' answer to my question...
If you need more information, please ask me... or don't hesitate to 'redirect' me to any specific post / thread / doc.
Concerning
Sébastien
As mentioned above, I would look to increase the physical RAM in each of at least 8 GB. RAM for these inexpensive boxes looks - £160 of Crucial for 8 GB, a bit more than Dell is no doubt.
Also the RAID controller in each server must have cache battery backed on this subject, so that may need to add more.
Please give points for any helpful answer.

Difference between vCenter server and ESX server
Hello
I'm new to the development of VMware. Can you please explain me how ESX server differs from the VirtualCenter Server?
According to my knowledge, ESX server is the one on which the real images are created and deployed while VirtualCenter manages ESX (one at a time) servers. ability to manage multiple ESX servers, both 'vSphere' a.
My understanding is correct. Kindly answer my question.
ESX (later - ESX4) is a system of bare metal operating that you can install directly on your physical hardware. This is the hypervisor layer that helps you to run multiple virtual machines on a single piece of material. The heart of ESX is the VMkernel which does all the magic (resouce management VM.. .and much). Talk about vCenter (previously Center Virtual Server) is a management application that you can install on a separate physical computer (you can even have a virtual vCenter). Once your vCenter is allowed, you can begin to manage the ESX servers.
There are two ways to manage ESX. One is that you can directly connect to your ESX Server with root password and manage it. Otherwise, connect the server vCenter, add the ESX Server so that your vCenter it manages.
vCenter resembles a management station from which you can manage your multiple ESX servers.

ESX Server 3.5 log collection
Hi all
I was hoping that someone in the community may be able to help me with a question:
We collect newspapers of ESX 3.5 servers, these newspapers come together for security and audit purposes. For security reasons we can't use rotated logs and log rotation will be turned off. Journal gathing can be quiet, completed by ensuring all the information together, nothing more polished, demons are sent signals to suspend newspapers are obtained.
I tried to find information on what demons in memory write in newspapers, if these demons keep newspapers to open all the time, should they syncs, can we send thos sighups demons without messing up the virtual machines running on the server or the communication of these virtual machines.
Q. what demons write in newspapers.
Q. what demons keep newspapers open permanently, or need for synchronization
Q. can I use sighup or another signal to get uptodate own newspapers.
I have a feeling that this will have to be answered by a real Director of VMWARE (ESX Server) and I hope that that person reads this.
Well, I'm glad that you came to a conclusion and actually use logrotate is one practice that CIS, STIG, Tripwire, security of VMware for lockout procedures guides.
If you found this information useful, please consider awarding points to 'Correct' or 'useful '. Thank you!!!
Kind regards

VMware ESX server CPU use test alarm
Hi all
For a new client, I need to show the alarm and ticket slot functionlity vmware ESX server logging settings
- Use of the CPU of a server ESX VMW
- Use of memory for the server ESX VMW
While I reduced the threshold value of VMW ESX Server CPU use as beloow format
WARNING - 5% and STDev.warning - 0
I made this two days before configuration, but still no alarm generated for this rule.
Help the creation of a test of the abveo metric ESX alarm
Hi - I ended up having to do such things in the past as well. I just built a virtual machine added lots of processors and memory, then for the CPU, I used the script CPUBusy.vbs from VMware (Google search which) and down it load times so that he began to max real physical processors... For memory, I just opened a massive text file in Wordpad and scroll up and down it. This gave me the circumstances to test the alarms, just don't do as a busy time or use some dev ESX servers... Data growing in vmware esx server disk 3
Hi, I have been asked by a colleague If I can be useful to expand d: ------disc on an existing virtual windows server 2003.
They use:
VMware ESX Server 3i Version 3.5.0 Build 110271
VMware Infrastructure Client Version 2.5.0 build 119826
Is it possible to extend the disc in vSphere clienten, start by clicking on the edit \ disk and then expand the *. wmdk file of 25 GB to 40 GB? After this connection in the server and expand the disk using a few better disk expansion program.
/ T.
Yes, it should work even with the virtual machine. After having developed the virtual disk in the graphical interface, connect to the virtual machine Windows 2003 (or open the console or via the administrative RDP session) and rescan storage in disk management. Assuming that the data disk has only one partition or is the last partition on the disk and does not have the file exchange/swapfile on it, you may even be able to extend disk space by using the diskpart command-line utility.

Hot migration is possible with VMWare ESXi 5.1.0 without an ESX server management
Hot migration is possible with VMWare ESXi 5.1.0 without an ESX server management?
I wonder for a future issue, a scenario where a system administrator must build a Win2008 + DC on local storage, server
then, once the physical box is integrated into the class network, the physical box is connected to the classified SAN storage.
Is it possible to hot - migrate the server Win2008 + CC local storage to SAN storage at this time, with only the
free version of VMWare ESXi 5.1.0?Welcome to the community - I guess that you are looking to do this, while the virtual machine is currently running - this is not possible without a management server, also called vCenetr, but all is not lost because you would be able spend the VM local storage to the San with the VM posered using the client storage management features

To upgrade ESX Server 3.5 u2 to u5
Hello, I have a client that is running ESX Server 3.5 with 3 servers. One with 2 with U2 and U3. Its ESX, ESXi not
We must install a 2008 R2 which is not supported on these versions, it is supported on U5.
So, I want to upgrade. IM more familiar with ESXi ESX 3.5 4.
From what I read, I can just download the Rollup 3.5 U5 CD. Can I just start with that and follow the instructions and it will update to the U5
Is it that simple?
In addition, we run a couple of VM on local storage on these servers, im assuming they will be left intact and that there is no reformatting of drives?
If she needs to reformat I can copy the virtual machine off the coast of the first.
Thank you
Mike
It's been a while since I was ipgraded a server of VI - 3, but it's as simple as that, I recall - but as with any upgrade, make backups of your computers - virtual

4.1 ESX Server thinks it is managed by VCenter, but is not
An ESX 4.1.0 server (Standard edition) think it is managed by our server to VC, but it isn't.
When connecting to the server with an ESX VSphere Client, I am greeted with the message:
"This host is currently managed by the VCenter server... IP address. It is not the case.
I believe that the problem started in trying to add this ESX server 4.1.0 to our server VCenter 4.0.0
This isn't a combination of supported, but the operation seems to have left the ESX with the VCenter Server Agent installed and configured server.
I guess I'll upgrade our server VCenter 4.1 at a given time, but how to remove or correct the VC Server Agent on the host computer in the meantime?
I see this suggestion: http://http://communities.vmware.com/message/707920#707920
and cannot find this directory on the server VCenter, but what script to use is not clear.
Thank you... Lyle
Hi Lyle,
Take a look at the following kb and try uninstalling vCenter Server Agent:
