only one account on computer but listed as a guest account

I have windows 8 on my HP and the only account on the computer is mine, but I am registered as a guest, so I can not delete the files from my computer, or I can approve the updates. Noone took the computer apart myself. When I go into the settings and change the computer parameter to users, there is not yet an option to add/remove users. I contacted HP support and they wanted $99.00 to solve this problem for me.

There are several ways to do it, maybe, another will prove more successful.  Here's all that come to mind right now.  The keys WindowsLogo + R to open the run.

  • Start/Run COMMAND. EXE > users and the security for the family accounts > change account Type
  • Start/Run NETPLWIZ > double-click account > set belonging to the Group and together as an administrator
  • Click Start > computer management > users section and local groups > double click on account, then add membership to the Administrators group
  • Run this command at the command prompt, replacing username with the real user name you want to change: net localgroup administrators username / add

That's all I can think of at this time, but once you are connected with a level account administrator (or the built-in by default), the avenues above should allow you to join your other account and set it as admin level so it can do things.

You can also use any of these methods by resetting the password of the other account, but I don't recommend that unless it is an absolute last resort, because it is permanent damage, including the possibility of losing your encryption keys and lose access to all your data, as if your computer has dropped in the ocean. You don't want this kind of data loss.  And if you go to the risk of changing a password with these methods, save ALL your files first.

  • Only one account on the computer is not a Director

I've seen a few posts on this problem, but none touch on questions or offer a viable solution.

    Here goes:

The computer has a microsoft account (configured with an e-mail address and password), which we will call "Tom" on this point. This AT ONE TIME WAS a Director of accounts with total control. He is now appearing as a guest. Currently, there is no administrator account available in order to make changes, make the high command prompts, etc. When a user account control box, it is said to connect to an administrator account, but does not list a, and the OK button is grayed out.

Sounds easy? FAKE... Here are the parts of fools.

I am UNABLE to activate the built in admin account through this account of Tom for obvious reasons not having admin rights for the guests UAC or elevated command prompt. Register States that he built in account is already on ('10' in hexadecimal code)

Restart in safe mode to get the account admin ACCOUNT TOM CAUSES to DISAPPEAR PERMANENTLY!

I can make changes at this time, but all of a sudden the account of Tom is no longer presents itself as an account.

After you restart the computer in normal mode, the account of Tom disappeared permanently and the account admin "safe mode" is in its place as a new account "Hi."

At this point, I can create as many accounts as I want with ANY type, but I can never get windows to recognize on behalf of Tom more. create a new account with the same e-mail address, the windows to the State that account on the computer already exists with this address email... but it does not appear ANYWHERE.  The user files are still on the computer in the users folder.

To recover from this State, I can restore the computer to a point 2 weeks ago and my account of Tom RETURNS, but unfortunately it is always invited.

I tried the repair account tool by using the account of Tom, but obviously he invites a UAC and does not allow me to continue.  I have not tried running this tool in safe mode or to restart with the admin account but the account not found Tom. But I feel that accomplish nothing given that Tom is no longer seen as an account.

It's not my computer. The only way I have noticed that this problem was trying to fix a webcam which is ' stuck on '... Yes, this could be an indicator of a deeper problem, or suspected of cheating. The webcam will start as soon as windows loads...? ! ? Scary! The owner had a "Computer SCIENTIST" friend working on this computer before these problems and I don't want to jump to conclusions about crippling computer and espionage through the webcam (which is now covered with Ribbon)... even if it's really a coincidence.

Currently, re-installation of windows is a last resort solution. I'll take the easy way out without first bouncing around a few ideas.  I am EXTREMELY computer competent and tried most of the normal solutions (net user / add, administrator activate via the command prompt, safe mode, control panel of users is unusable because of the UAC).

It's driving me crazy... I can't wait to see some good ideas!

    Tom

I can't imagine how it would disappear.  I hope that all your files are always safe under C:\Users\Tom (or other).

A few different things can happen depending on whether the account exists locally before joining (which, in my opinion, is a more reliable way to go).  For example, my username home folder is shawn_000 because it uses numbers if you do first an account of Ms.  But this does not happen if the account was local first and then just got "connected" to MS account later.  But you also have weird things where you have a local and an online account if you go exploring in the MMC to actual users on the PC.

Honestly, what would be probably the best is getting into the built-in administrator account and create a local account with admin rights, you can use without being in safe mode. Basically just one for yourself.  On my system, this is my only account. I trust just UAC instead of actually use an account limited, because honestly, does anyone really run under an account that is limited each day and go crazy?

But I digress.  I just set up your new account as a local account.  Start and login, get it all configured and drag your files on.  Then more later if you want to you can connect it to Ms.

  • I'm locked out guest user (only one account on my Mac)

I recently bought a macbook model 2013 end pro on eBay and the seller gave me the password for the user "guest".

I changed the password to a blank password that I didn't have a password but I did not create a new user account.

last night I installed clean OS X El Capitan, when installation is complete asked me a password at the login screen.

I managed to pass the login password, but now I am trying to create a new password in system preferences, but I can't because I'm required to use a password to allow the change.

Guest user is the only account on my Mac, so I have no idea what to do to get out of this mess.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can offer support.

You wipe the drive and then do a fresh install of Mac OS X. You can do this via the network of restoration:

    Installer Lion through Mavericks

    1. Restart the computer and after the chime hold down the keys COMMAND + OPTION + R until it appears a globe. Wait patiently - 5 - 15 minutes - until appears the Utility Menu.
    2. Select in the Menu Utility disk utility and click on the continue button.
    3. Disk utility charges and select the player (usually, it's the entry Out-bumpy with of the mfgr.) ID and size) of the list to one side. Click the Partition tab in the main window of disk utility.
    4. Under the scheme of Volume defined heading the number of partitions in a single volume. Click the Options button, set the GUID partition scheme, and then click the OK button. Define the type of Format Mac OS extended (journaled). Click the Partition button and wait until the end of the process. Quit disk utility and re-enter the Utility Menu.
    5. Select reinstall OS X in the Utility Menu, and then click the install button.

This should install it the original version of OS X comes with the computer originally.

  • The only user on my computer account is missing

Some of my work laptop and desktop computers have recently become unusable because I can not connect.  Each computer only had a user account and he is gone.  There is literally nothing to click on or go on the Welcome screen.  I saw the other missing messages of user accounts, and the solution is to always connect to a different user account to change some settings and others.  No one knows what to do if there is only one account user, admin and is absent?

    Thanks for all the ideas!

    On one of the computers.

Restart and start typing the F8 key when the PC manufacturer's logo appears.  Keep typing just on what you actually try capture the moment that disappears from the logo of the manufacturer of the PC but before starting Windows itself.

Select safe mode.  An account called administrator should appear as it is designed to do so automatically if other accounts are broken.  However, there is no password.  Log it.

As soon as Windows has finished starting up, and it's just sitting there, go to

Control Panel [view by - small icons, as applicable], user accounts, manage another account.  Create a new account and make an Admin account - Admin1.  Then do it again you give two chances - Admin2.  Don't bother with giving them passwords, but as you can do it later.

Restart again without any other tinkering because it is important avoid doing anything that might cause errors while you are in this special administrator account.

When you restart, you can identify yourself as Admin1.  Once you are happy that it works correctly, make a password reset disk for it and give it a strong password.  Instructions to do this are in Windows Help and are explained later in

As a precaution 2- Make & test a password for each account reset disk [PDF version]

Then sign and do the same thing with Admin2.

You can then proceed to make an account for every user on this computer, log in as a user and make a password reset disk for it.  Don't decide to use the Admin1 and Admin2 as an account on the day the day, keep them for granting administrative permissions only to make them here ready in case something like this happens again.  See

As a precaution - 1 Create two additional admin accounts [PDF version]

Then do the same for each of the other computers.

    - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- -

I fear that you will find that you have been infected by malware in order to check this carefully before backups [or you risk infecting your previous backups and anything else you connect to these computers].  The only reason why I think it is it seems to be a strange coincidence that you had the same rare failure on several computers at the same time.

  • I cannot perform certain functions because he says that I'm not an administrator, but it's my computer and I'm the only one who uses this computer__

I cannot perform certain functions because he says that I'm not an administrator, but it's my computer and I'm the only person who uses this computer

What are the functions? More global changes (changes to the system, software installation) require an elevation in Vista/Windows 7.

Changes to the built-in Vista administrator account

User - recommended configuration (Vista and Win7) accounts

You absolutely don't want to have only one user account. As XP and all other Windows 7, Vista, and modern operating systems are operating systems multi-user with integrated system of accounts as default Administrator and comments. These accounts should be left alone because they are part of the structure of the operating system.

In particular, you do not want account only one user with administrator privileges on Vista and Windows 7 because the administrator account integrated (normally only used in emergencies) is disabled by default. If you use as an administrator for your daily work, and this account is corrupt, things will be difficult. It is not impossible to activate the built-in administrator to rescue things, but it may require more work you want to do. Better not to get into a bad situation at first.

The user account that is for your daily work must be a Standard user, with the extra administrative user (call it something like 'CompAdmin' or 'Tech' or similar) only it for elevation purposes. As a user Standard is recommended for security reasons and will help protect your computer against infections. After you have created "CompAdmin", connect to it and change your normal user account Standard. Then log on to your regular account.

If you want to go directly to the desktop and ignore the Welcome screen with the icons of the user accounts, you can do this:

Start Orb > Search box > type: netplwiz [Enter]
Click continue (or provide an administrator password) when you are prompted by UAC

Uncheck "users must enter a user name and password to use this computer". Select a user account to connect automatically by clicking on the account you want to highlight and press OK. Enter the password for this user account (when it exists) when you are prompted. Leave blank if there is no password (null). MS - MVP - Elephant Boy computers - don't panic!
