opening programs open in Media Player

any program I try to open, think it must be open with media player... How can I solve this?

It sounds like your file associations have been lost.  You can try to restore your associations, but probably the best way to solve this problem is to use system restore to restore your computer to a point in time before it's a problem.

  • After removing a virus from my computer, I can't access any of my programs like Windows Media Player. Pop - up says choose program to open the file type.

After removing a virus from my computer last year, I struggle to access most programs such as media player and other things.  When I try to open something, I get a popup asking me to choose the program I want to use to open this file. For some programs, this file is actually listed.  But for the most part, they did not.  For example, Nero express is what I use to copy CDs or DVDs.  I have to go into a safe mode to use it as well as using programs to run virus checks.  I was told that the virus had somehow corrupted or affected my file extensions.  I almost had cheated using powerful PC Max but did some research beforehand.  Any suggestions?

    original title: File Extension problems

If you need to go to Safe Mode in order to use certain applications (for example, Nero Express), particularly antivirus scans, you most likely have not successfully removed all malware from your computer.

How did you remove the virus from your computer last year?

You then install an antivirus application?  Which one?  Are you still using it?  What's his current subscription? Its subscription has already been authorized expiration?

What version of Windows, including service pack, do you use?

What other anti-malware software do you currently use?

Have you analysed recently with the following free tools?  Otherwise, download, install, update and run scans (not simultaneously) with each of them:
    MalwareBytes AntiMalware
    SUPERAntiSpyware
Like many also restore file associations.

    • Right-click on a file and select open with > choose program.
    • Look in the lists of programs (split in 'Recommend programs' and 'Other programs')
    • If you can't find the application you want to use to open this type of file, click on the button "Browse".
    • The "Program Files" folder should open (if it isn't, go to C:\Program Files
    • Find the program you want to use.  If you are looking in C:\Program Files\------, you determine which file is the actual program.  You should be able to tell from the icon.  If not, see note below)
    • Select the program (the exe file or the name of the program in one of these lists) and check the box "always use the program selected to open this type of file"
    • Click OK
    • Repeat the above for each type of different file according to the needs

Note: If you need to determine the EXE file for an application, just right-click on the shortcut you use to start the program, and then select Properties.  Click on the tab "shortcut".  The 'Target' box contains the path name to go to the executable (EXE file) for the program.   For example, the executable file for Firefox is "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"

There are a few exceptions, including but not limited to Microsoft applications, which use a more obscure reference to the target.  Word, for example, indicates the 'target' as a 'Microsoft Office' gray of no matter the version.  The real exe for Word is 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICEnn\WinWord.exe' where the nn refers to the version of Word that you have (Word XP/2002 is 10, Word 2003 is 11, Word 2007 is 12, Word 2010 is 14).

If you need assistance with a shortcut that does not directly show the name of path, ask.

    Hi jimbosum888,

I never had any problems with Windows Media Player, but it seems that an antivirus program or a firewall is blocking Windows Media Player.

If you have installed AntiVirus or an additional firewall, just disable and try to start the media player again.

  • Every thing opens windows media player

I don't know what I did. I was down loading a disc photos. Don't know what I clicked but now all my desktop icons are all of the windows media player icon and when I go to system restore and you click on it it opens windows media player also.   help.........................

    Hello

See if you can run the Windows System Restore as follows.

Shut down the PC.  Tap away at f8 that you start the PC to enter the Windows Recovery Console.  Use the arrow keys to select Safe mode and press ENTER.  When it is loaded, click on the Menu start, open the all programs, open accessories, right-click on command prompt and select "run as Administrator".  Type in the following command and press ENTER.

    Rstrui.exe

I hope that this will launch the system restore.  Choose a restore point at least 24 hours before the file association problem and then restore.  When you are finished, Windows will restart normally.

    Kind regards

    DP - K

  • For some reason any all the items on the left side of the start menu open to media player, I have tried earlier to get videos to play. And it doesn't let me do system restore

Each item in the left pane displays a video icon and therefore tries to open the media player, also I am not able to do the system restore

Well, the video files will open naturally in Windows Media Player.

You might want to try to reset your default programs:

Default Forums of Windows 7 Associations - restore - file Type

    ----------

    Also:

    Click Start
Type: CMD, according to the results, right-click CMD
    Click on "Run as Administrator"
At the command prompt, type: sfc/scannow

This will check for any breach of integrity

    Restart your system

    -----------

Check your hard drive for errors:

    Click Start

Type: CMD, according to the results, right-click CMD

    Click on "Run as Administrator"

At the command prompt, type: chkdsk /f /r

When you restart your system, your computer will be scanned for errors and will try to correct them.

    -------------

You can also have a virus. There are some that will hide your files/folders so that you don't normally see them. I strongly suggest to run a scan on your computer with your antivirus/antimalware software. If you need to, you can also use the Microsoft Safety Scanner, it's free:

    http://www.Microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

Also, if your files are hidden, check out the following article on how to display the:

Hi ' David, thanks for your support.

Your 1st letter of instruction... would you still please forgive my ignorance. I have no reference to the Windows Photo Viewer on my computer. Some blocked images may have been deleted as just to get rid of bad pictures, but most are those to keep.

    Following the advice...

    1. in the opening of Media Player, right-click on the image, choose the location of the opened file. Result = nothing happens, no message at all.

    2. I followed the link from Microsoft windows to find where the blocked images. Followed all the recommendations of various research & got negative results.

    3. I tried the same search on Windows live photo gallery & the result was instant & blocked all of them are open, also even in Adobe photo shop.

I have not tried to go further at this stage.

Thank you, best regards. Tony T.

I tried to install an earlier version, but was not allowed to do.

How can I solve this problem.

    Hi Nick91606,

KERNELBASE.dll is a file system of the operating system.

    Method 1

I suggest that you save the file on your computer and check if Windows media player works.

    (a) click the Start button.

    (b) in the search box, type command prompt.

    (c) in the list of results, right-click guest, and then click run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

    (d) in the type command regsvr32 kernelbase.dll line press ENTER.

    (e) close the command prompt

    Method 2

If the previous step fails then I suggest that scan you SFC on the computer that would be a system file corrupt on the computer search and replace.

The analysis may take some time, so be patient. Windows allows to fix corrupt or missing files it finds. If the information of the installation CD is required to fix the problem, you may be asked to insert your Windows Vista installation CD.
