"OS Partitions" option when you build a new PowerEdge

It's been a while since I ordered a new EP, and I'm a bit confused about this "OS Partitions" option. I'm going with a 4 drive RAID 10 (500 GB disks) and Windows Server 2012 Standard. The selections available are:

  • None
  • 40GB Microsoft OS Partition Override
  • 80GB Microsoft OS Partition Override
  • Maximum Microsoft OS Partition Override, GPT active
  • Override size maximum partition for Microsoft Windows factory installed

I called Dell and did the cat online and not had a clue what meant these options. I found some old discussions on the subject, but none were really difinitive on how the server would be configured according to each option. The 40 and 80 GB are pretty simple, although same 80 GB seems a little low these days especially with most of the servers with 16 GB + memory (swap), so it would be nice if you could choose a custom size.

Then, how the server will come to set up if I select "None"? And what of these two options 'Maximum '?

I think that few people know what 'no' means here, because they are more likely to choose one of the other options.

None: this could just be the minimum score allowed by Windows (32 GB) size. Or (less likely), it could just be that Dell includes support of OS but no factory of the operating system installation.

40 GB Microsoft OS Partition Override: Simple. Probably too little to be viable for MOST uses, but if you know what you are doing and the need to rationalize the C: partition, then maybe it's not a big deal (the filename of the page could be moved to another "disc" as well). I have an installation of 2012 who was sitting at about 35 GB since December (including 8 GB page file) - it is not a widely used server, running in the form of DC and the WDS server (of course the images are stored on a 'second' disc).

80 GB Microsoft OS Partition Override: once again, simple. I would deploy a server with a disk of 80 Go C:? No, I would give it at least 100 GB (depending on what it is for, that I use usually about 120 GB). However, 80GB - if you were stuck with it - would probably manageable (if you can move extremely large page files to another drive).

Maximum size of Partition override for Microsoft Windows factory installed: this will create a C: partition encompassing the entire size of the 'drive '.  If you have a RAID 10 4x500GB, with about 1 TB of usable disk space, then your C: partition is 1 TB.  This works for any configuration of "drive" up to 2 TB, which explains why the GPT option is available.

Maximum Microsoft OS Partition Override, GPT active: say you have a RAID 10 4x2TB, which gives you about 4 TB of usable disk space. So that Windows to see and use a "drive" that big, it must first be converted to the GPT. However, Windows can only start a 'disc' TPG if UEFI is supported and enabled on the system. Would you then a partition C: from 4 TB... I'm not 100% sure that's how he'd come, but according to their description, it would be my guess.

Personally, I would choose the 80 GB partition. With 2008 and later versions, it is EASY to extend, retractable partitions in the diskpart/records management, so I get it to 80 GB, and then extend to 120 GB or anything else that seemed appropriate for the installation of the server.

If you have a virtual machine for Windows test, you could do the following, to ensure that the logic unit number has a clean partition table:

-set the LUN as a GROSS physical to virtual machine device

-Run diskpart, select the drive and run the CLEAN command

-detach the LUN to the virtual machine

-try to create the data on the LUN VMFS store

The size of the block of the data store where the VM test can be a problem with the above. Due to the size of the LUN, the size of the block of the data store must be at least 4 MB. Attach the LUN to a physical test system could be an alternative.

  • When you install a new application, is it necessary to start from a clean boot to ensure that no application works?

When you install a new application, is it necessary to start from a clean boot to ensure that no application works?  Somewhere, a long time ago, we advised me to always be in a boot environment when installing new applications and have always respected this notice since.  However, I recently learned that is not necessary and may even be counterproductive because some Microsoft Services are needed for new facilities.  My goal is to have no corrupted installations to avoid future problems, but I have nothing seems to give me resistance gremlin 100% and I still have my share of challenges.   Almost all applications that I install contains the warning to make sure that no application works before installing.  Can anyone tell me with authority the best way to ensure that new installations of new applications please?  In addition, the same orientation for Win XP Pro to do with Win 7 Home Premium please?  Thank you.

YW. Yes, I think an important thing to take away is to realize that it is better to only install the necessary Windows updates 'priority '. There is one exception, apparently. Recently, an MVP made me notice that updates to certificate root (which although considered "Optional" are virtually useful updates to security for IE) must be installed as well.

But others are optional and since then, they can be VERY problematic (especially updates of pilot and the dreaded Windows Search 4.0), you really should stay away from them!

Happy to help to explain things. Good luck!

  • The behavior of business rule when you deploy a new version

    Hi Experts,

My client is using bpm11g, they asked when you deploy a new version of bpmn process with build-in the business rule, what will happen to the existing and update of the composer?

The old rule will be updated with the new version or will be preserved as it was? If the latter is true, when the new version will be effective?

    Best regards

    Hello

What has to happen, is it time that you changed a BR in the composer, that a redeployment of the composite does not replace the amended administrative rules.

You can / should export your composite of EM then you JDeveloper project reflecting changes in the BR in composer: using Oracle SOA composer with Oracle Business Rules - 11 g Release 1 (11.1.1.6.1).

  • Performance issues when you build a large crossroads

    Hello

I have a performance issues when you build a large crossroads.

    So here's my situation:

    We use Discoverer Plus 10.1.2.45.46c
Database Oracle 9.2.0.6 on Windows 2003
    OAS 10.1.0.3
1.5 GB of RAM on my PC

-J' planned a workbook with 1 single worksheet that takes 2 minutes to run. The table generated in the database to store the results from 19 columns and rows to about 225000 (I know that's a lot, but it is what the customer needs).

-When I opened the workbook, it takes about 2 hours to recover the data. The data is retrieved in groups of 1000 and at the beginning, the lines are read much faster than at the end. There are also 15 minutes more to build the crosstab. So overall, it takes 2 hours and 15 minutes for the crosstab display on my screen.

    Can someone explain to me:
    -Why does take so long?
-What can I do to improve the execution other than changing the application or displaying the results in a regular tab? Is there some setting that I can do on the database of the Oracle Application Server?

Note: I have reproduced the worksheet in a simple tab and demand it. The table generated in the DB to store the results is the same and it takes only 2-3 minutes to open this spreadsheet and extract all lines.

    Thank you!

    Mary

    Hi Mary
If you have 225 000 lines in your basic spreadsheet, then it will take a lot of time to produce a crosstab. The reason is that Finder can not calculate how many buckets he needs until he has read all the data. I can almost guarantee that with 225 000 lines to read and manipulate that you are short of memory.

You might be better suited someone create and populate a table with the results you need rather than try to get the discoverer to calculate values in crosstab on the fly. If the final result of the crosstab is a few lines of aggregated data, then this is what is right for your table. The advantage of using a table and a few SQL (or PL/SQL) is that you will not be using your local computer during the aggregation / sorting phase. Don't forget a crosstab also sort based on the values in the left columns, the columns you have aggregations (buckets) you will have and most necessary sort. Using a table, you can index or even partition the results that will make for a much faster recovery.

As a tip, recommend Oracle, confirmed by myself during the exhaustive tests, no do not build large paintings to double entry due to the performance of touch that you will have. The tables are much more efficient because you can pull back x lines at once. You can't do that with a crosstab and all values must be read before that whatever it is is displayed.

    Does that help?
