Out ESX clusters behind VPLEX?

Hi all

We currently have several ESX cluster, sitting on a VMAX battery behind VPLEX. We want to keep the clusters on VMAX, but them out behind the table VPLEX (direct attach VMAX).

I'm primarily a storage analyst, so forgive me for my ignorance. The following three options (potential) I see:

  1. Provision of the new LUN directly from the VMAX, vMotion VMs on the new LUNS and LUN VPLEX decom. -I know that it will work, but it will take the most effort.
  2. Leave the LUNS connected VPLEX and join the same LUN to the cluster of the VMAX. -It would be easier, but I'm not confident, it would work, because the NAA disk is virtualized on the VPLEX. This would mean that the ESX cluster would see the same disk with two different numbers of NAA.
  3. Get a failure throughout the cluster, remove the VPLEX drives, fix again the same LUN directly from VMAX. -I think that it worked as long as VMWare can still recognize the virtual computer data once the disks are added re?

My question is, does anyone have experience with the #2 or #3? Either will work, or is there a better way?

Any information is appreciated.

Thank you

Tanner

Hi Depping,

We were going to conduct the tests, but we got useful information from the community of EMC support. They had this to say:

«.. . the VPLEX has its own cache of reading, so if a volume is written to out the VPLEX (directly at VMAX) cache will contain invalid data for blocks, because the VPLEX unaware they had been updated since the last time they were read from the disk, and you could get data corruption. »

In the light of this point, we decided to just direct new provision attached LUN of VMAX and vMotion if necessary. As with most stores, we cannot take a chance that something is messed up and we loose data.

Thank you

Tanner

  • ESX clusters - sharing Lun

    Hello

    Here's our scenario.

Existing 6 node cluster to access the Lun 12

New cluster of 4 nodes.  Due to CPU differences were created in the new cluster.  However, we always want to use the same storage shared in the first group.

Anyone know if there are problems around to take this route?  I appreciate if clusters were great could cause performance issues, he's here all the problems have been a cluster can write or overwrite information about a unit number logic that is used by each cluster.  I looked at best practices of VMware, but he didn't really say that this road does not have to be followed.

    Thank you very much

    Graeme

You increase the reserves of SCSI.

There are 'only' 4 host more, so this won't be a problem.

  • Can final answer - I share LUNS across different Clusters ESX

I have travelled to communities for the answer, but not the do not have seen anything official from VMware.

Can I share a LUN through multiple ESX Clusters? Is it supported? Can you tell me what make it official?

    Thank you.

Yes you can share a LUN through consolidation and yes it is supported. As long as the ESX servers see the LUNS it can use it even if they are in different groups.  The question does make sense - you will want to ensure that loads is scale on the LUN.

  • How to associate cluster esx with the data report store

    Hi all

I'm running a repore that displays data stores less than 50 free concerts. The storage team would like a coloum for esx clusters associated with the LUN. I can't see to find it and what is possible.

    Thanks in advance,

    Scott.

I would create a WCF function, script type, with a timeRange parameter and a new data store VMWDatastore context parameter, required, not a list.  Set the output in common: string.

    Add the following script:

    QS = server. QueryService

    Query = "!" "VMWCluster where esxServers.datastores.uniqueId = ' ${datastore.uniqueId}"

    cluster = server. QueryService.queryTopologyObjects (query)

    clusterNames = clusters? collect {cluster-> cluster?. name}?. Join(', ')

    return clusterNames

You can then use this in your report, feeding the entrance of context for the current row data store.

    Hello.

I tried and tried all day.

I even started to check the adobe edge animate to help you.

but so far I couldn t find a solution.

    Hopfully somebody can help me.

    Here´s idea:

I want to create a clean and simple website.

There should be pictures, one under the other.

When the visitor hovers over one of the images, it should disappear (fade out).

Behind this image is a slideshow in the same format.

When the cursor changes from space, the image is displayed again (fade in).

Another idea is, it's a slide show, which begins when you mouseover

and stops and shows the first picture when you mouesout the area.

There should be no button or anything.

Sounds easy, but I found no solution.

    Is there a possibility?

    Kind regards

You can try using compositions, the active State for the triggers of otherwise fair and transparent setting for the target containers. Same thing for all.

  • Lost the basket of the lun, how do for cleaning ESX?

Hello, we have been decommiting a Hitachi today presented on MON 20 or if our ESX clusters. The guys jumped the gun and released before, I had the opportunity to remove the data on them vmfs stores. All the vm was off course.

I heard on orphan data warehouses and am not clear exactly what they are or how the cleaning.

Will simply be a new HBA cleaning analysis data warehouses the ESX once knew, or is it more in depth?

    Thank you

Yes, the first thing I'd do is rescan all your adapters storage again and see where you are, after the new analysis.

  • vCenter via WAN

We try to connect some boxes ESXi on remote sites to a centralized VC. Some are connected via VPN, and those works without a hitch. The other sites are connected through 1:1 NAT, with IP restriction pass any rule that firewall on both ends. The problem we face is that any height, define us the interval of pulsation on the VC Server (it is set to 24 hours), guests WAN connection eventually times out and are disconnected. There is no problem of communication between the sites, and the hosts will remain connected without problem for as long that the heartbeat interval is set. All involved ISPS that they aren't antics with UDP port 902 or or any combination of these (or any other port/protocol also). Certainly we are not the first or only those to try this - I saw some documents of VMware guests WAN-connection to the sites of VC, but I was unable to find anyone with this specific problem. Any additional info or newspapers that might be useful, I'll give you a pleasure.

(New version of VC, different versions of ESXi 4.1 until the new generation)

Have the ESX servers behind a NAT device is not supported, according to KB http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1010652

However, KB itself provide a workaround, which is to change the file vpxa.cfg inside the host of the IP correct vcenter. Check if this helps you.

  • Validation of the design of the DMZ

Here is a summary of my current client environment30 total of physical machines. I have a data center with 3 different VLANa DMZ public face to face a company intranet and DMZ.  Security is important in this environment, and we should not go through certification and accreditation audits.  I'm afraid that the security officer will push a physical separation for each network, as by running different ESX clusters for each.  It will be very costly and inefficient, especially since both DMZ networks have 3-4 VMs each.  I wouldn't run 4 VMs on a pair of DL380 G6s simply because they are in a different trust zone!

I propose to create a vSwitch distributed with 4 NIC team, with each vlan segmented using tagging vlan and combining the three sites on the same physical host. We can also consider having the VLAN MGMT and VMotion on these same 4 natachasery.  I already read this document and he described in detail how this could be done.

    http://www.VMware.com/files/PDF/dmz_virtualization_vmware_infra_wp.PDF

I think we're going to need to use a product like vShield zones, or a 3rd party firewall virtual (such as Altor) to transmit our audits and satisfy the security people.  We can get the physical network interface cards on the hosts so that will provide the best separation.  I guess in a perspective of network traffic, it might be a good practice at least put the console service and VMotion on separate natachasery.

Where should we go with VLAN here, or advise you to use natachasery on the separate virtual switches for the separation?  Finally, my question boils down to this - is my solid design and are there any additional recommendations to the execution of the three zones of different trust in a single cluster?

    Thanks in advance!

    Hello

IS always implies that you use VLAN within your physical network to DMZ and other areas of trust... So continue to use VLANs within the virtual world.  You can't really treat the vNetwork 'less' safe as the pNetwork because it is actually NOT. It's safer, "back of the box" from a perspective of layer 2 as the vNetwork is not sensitive to the many attacks of layer 2 while pNetwork 'out of the box' is sensitive.

If you use VLAN in the physical world and 'trust' as your pSwitches stay or are configured correctly.

So use VLAN in the vNetwork as well. VST works fine in this case.

However, if your DMZ is PHYSICALLY separated from your other pNetworks then maintaining this separation to help IS the DMZ pSwitch. I wouldn't take the DMZ pSwitch plugged into the pSwitch directly upstream of the ESX host and then use IS/VST. This is not correct.

In both cases when you combine demilitarized and DMZ not trust areas on the same cluster, you need to increase your vigilance to ensure that things do not move to where they do not belong.

Even within the same group, I tend to keep my DMZ VMs on their own host or hosts to ensure their care does not impact on the rest of the environment or at least start like that and let DRS figure the rest. I also LUN separate VMs DMZ outweigh the problems of disk IO.

However, if you need to be compliant, your auditors MAY require a physical separation at the moment as a PCI PCI has yet to turn off any other type of orientation. This decision is left to the listener actually. That probably means that you WILL Have to physically separate. Talk to your accounts, they are there to help.

  • Configuration of thermocouple to MAX

I'm in the process of upgrading an ancient system of labView to a new beautiful brilliant (v4 for 2009) but I encounter some problems of setting up my thermocouples.

The old PC them works very well and becomes sensitive readings - a new is not so happy. I use the former Council of SCB - 68 even for both and have just upgraded the DAQ (now a PCI-6221) card and the PC.

MAX and LABView can read very well the thermocouple voltage and voltage correctly responds to changes in the thermocouple temperature (ambient 1.38v and response is 50mv/C) - However, when I try and tell him it's a thermocouple it tells me that the room is a constant of 398 000 degrees! This reading shows no response at all to the variations in temperature of the thermocouple.

I've got the thermocouple connected to AI2 on pins 65 and 31 as MAX connection diaigram seems to suggest. This is how I wired it upwards, or is it my setup that does not?

Thank you in advance for your help!

    Pete

Heh, I solved. Unfortunately, it was me be stupid all along.

The installer of the equipment that we measure is such that the thermocouple is about 10 ft away from the computer. Its attached to a wire that goes behind some cabinets and then to the back of the PC.

When I plugged the thermocouple directly in the room it worked fine - exactly as it should. Then when I put it on its extension cable there nuts again. I pulled out the wire behind the cabinets and carefully hidden to halfway along the wire is a housing of the amplifier. He never FAILED me to check the thread - I guess that even if there was an amplifier I wish that it is at the ends! I feel that this kit was concocted by several people talked to each other, so it does not surprise me none. I guess that, in the old VI, somewhere, there must be a correction factor hidden somewhere.

Thanks for your help guys - you definitely guided me in the right direction.

  • executable of teststand calling labview

I have a labview VI that I build in a file exe, and I would like to call from my sequence teststand in settings - need to other test steps to use its capacities in the rest of the sequence (main).  If it were just a VI, then no problem, the entries would be visible for me, and I could go.  Since it is an executable, however, my approach is to type "Call the executable", but I don't see anywhere that it allows me to spend in the entries, that he needs.  Thoughts?

I had the same problem before. I think I had to remove some "entries" that were not "recognized" with TestStand, specifically, I do not use the error in error Out of clusters or as inputs the DLL as these are not map correctly.

When I try a DLL at random on my system, TestStand gives me the following warning:

'This function has no information about the settings in the DLL or uses types not recognized by TestStand.

What other entry 'types' do you have?

    Thank you

  • Check if a GPIB device is turned on

Hi all.  Fairly new to LabVIEW, to be understanding.  I searched and searched for a solution for what must be a very common problem, so I must be mssing something very simple.

I am writing a vi to control up to three units GPIB.  The problem is that they will not be lit permanently, and people fly for other platforms (sometimes they even give them back, occasionally with their address unchanged GPIB).

The thing is, I don't want the vi user to rely on all units being there, with the right address GPIB specified and put on the market.

I know that LabVIEW will give me an error 14, put an end to execution, if she does not see a unit at a given address, but this seems surprisingly gross and I would rather deal with the error in other ways (disable the part of the measure, giving an error message etc. - details to be defined!).

Then... How can I check that there is a GPIB device turned on at the specific address without sending a command that triggers the same error (for example, error 14) program that I try to avoid?

Everything works fine when all units are powered on and properly addressed.

I am very vague about what is VISA (or if it is still relevant to this question) and have in it (and will not if I have to).  I just used "GPIB write" and "read GPIB" functions.  I would like a minimum of jargon, please.

    Thank you all!

    Andy

You need to disable the automatic error handling (Tools > Options > block diagram) and the wire to the top of the error in/out of clusters. A Unbundle by name you will get the error code.

This is a simple error handler that displays a message. If this error occurs, I put the next State (you use a state machine, aren't you?) to test the connection.

You should probably take the LabVIEW tutorial to get a better understanding of the error in/out cluster.

  • Windows 7 network authentication problem

Having Windows 7 installed and have problems connecting to wireless internet. I see our wireless network, but whenever I click on it, I get a box titled "Network authentication" where it says "Please enter the credentials of the user" with a name and a password. My computer does not have a password. I don't have the credentials saved in the computer (I checked via the control panel). I tried all possible combinations of things and I can just go. If I 'x' out of it, behind it states that "additional connection information are necessary. I entered in the control panel and already ticked the box in the network and sharing Center to "disable password protected sharing. Has nothing. Any help to get rid of this annoying credential dialog would be MUCH appreciated!

    XbowSteve and Yelliez,

I had the same problem: I bought a new computer (laptop ASUS U43F), and when I tried to connect to my home wireless network, I got a window that says "Windows Security" and "network authentication: Please enter the user credentials" also including a block a username and password.  I have three other machines humming happily my wireless network on Windows 7 and some on Mac OSX Snow Leopard.

Problem was, I bought this computer today and do not enter a password system.  In addition, I was the one who put my wireless network and I did not need only an encryption key, user authentication.  In addition, there is no credential stored again, and I had only my admin account set up.

#1: don't listen to those who say that it is a router problem, it is not.  IT DOES NOT ASK THE ADMIN ROUTER USERNAME AND PASSWORD!

#2: don't take you in the long list of issues poorly answered in the nets of the 'credentials of the user.

#3: IT IS NOT A QUESTION OF SHARING PROTECTED BY WORD!  ACK!

    Instead, follow these steps:

    (1) go to Panel and then network and Internet, then network and sharing Center.

    (2) click on manage networks wireless in the upper left of the window.

    (3) If your computer is new, then simply click 'Add '. If not, then click on "add", go through the steps below and choose the new network as your active network.

    (4) select 'Manually create a network profile.'

    (5) the form in the next window, including your network SSID, encryption, encryption, etc..  Select Conect automatically.

    (6) save.  It should say "Network successfully added."

Presto!  Who should do it - I'm not so different.

  • Issue of NFS Datastore

    Hello

We have a couple of ESX clusters which, for the most part, connect to FC storage. However, we also connect to a single NFS store, hosted by a Windows Server in their respective site.

    Site1ESXCluster connects to the Site1WinNFSStore

    Site2ESXCluster connects to the Site2WinNFSStore

Last week we had network problems that appear to have been shared NFS become inactive on the ESX hosts:

    inactive.JPG

I assumed that the servers are entered ODA and them restarted but still no luck.

I disassembled the and tried to link, but I get this error:

    NFSerror.JPG

Windows servers receive the request and respond to the event log with "mount operation managed to < ESXIP >.

If I try to add NFS Site1WinNFSStore to Site2ESXCluster, it works fine. And vice versa. But they will just not connect to stores they once had.

I also connected a host ESX cluster no at the end store.

There is no limitation of access on the store NFS on Windows servers.

It is alsmot, as if the ESX host refuses to connect to a store once problem!

    Any ideas?

I know it sounds crazy, but you have restarted windows NFS servers.

I had a similar problem with NFS windows shares using a Centos 6.4 mounting box.

In this case, a loss of network connectivity caused a stale mount on Centos system.

The best way to clean is to restart the system Centos and windows NFS server.

If you haven't tried it, so it can be worth a go.

  • StorageTek 6140 array performance

    Hi guys,.

I'm looking for a thought, comment or similar experiences when using tables StorageTek 6140.

We have an environment made up of HP Blades using virtual connect 5.1 running ESXi. Our layout of the storage is: either Boot from SAN, drives SSD Local Host Cache and data warehouses:

    • VPLEX distributed (SAS and SSD - auto-montage cascading)
    • VPLEX distributed (SAS only)
    • Local VNX (NL - SAS) disks only

These discs are housed in VNX 5700 with Fast Cache active

For the DEV machines and test, we use StorageTek 6140 with FC drives.

Data warehouses are all VMFS 5 and 1 TB and 1.6 to 2 TB sizes

The latency on the 6140 is terrible and having a very negative impact on the virtualization project.

The problem is that the four 6140 boxes have been paid and maintenance and operating costs are cheap, so it is difficult to obtain management consent to scrape the.

Each host has 4 HBAs (FCoE on CNAs) 6140 LUN using VMware SRM, PSP and all EMC LUNS using PowerPath/VE 5.8. VPLEX LUN have 6 lanes (4 local remote & 2) and VNX and 6140 have 4 paths.

VPLEX and LUN VNX test performance slate the 6140, we used several different VMDK sizes in different scenarios (2,4,6,8,16,32 son): 1 GB, 10 GB, 100 GB, 150 GB and 500 GB

We also used the article with VMware test:

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 2019131

With a greater number of workers we get 160ms on the 6140 latencies.

The only time wherever the 6140 provides best performance is when we use disks of high capacity and eliminate the benefits of caching on the storage array. Also in the case of real test (financial applications lots full work sets reading of large files running) the 6140 was faster than NL - SAS on VNX. The only explanation (theory), that I have for this is that, with small files, access is read from the Cache and not as much hitting drives so the VNX is faster than the 6140. But when you read large files it gets the disk and FC drives used on the 6140 are faster than the disks of NL - SAS on the VNX.

So is anyone using StorageTek 6140 with vSphere 5.1? What experiences do you have? Any thoughts on the improvement of the performance? We asked EMC to support the 6140 behind VPLEX but which was rejected.

    Thank you very much

Nobody else seems to use StorageTek 6140 with VMware (which I understand), we decided finally to retire the 6140 s and replace them with boxes of TinTri after a successful CEP. We will use the TinTri T540 (although there is a new series of T600, the order was made until they were released)

    • Trying to power on 2 virtual machines that use the same LUN RDM due to a lock on the file.
    • Creation of drives on a SCSI controller authorized sharing power on multiple machines with the RDM LUN configuerd, but unable to migrate virtual machines between hosts...

Anyone has an idea how can I configure my system VMs can therefore use the same ROW at the same time without losing their ability to vMotion?

    Thank you

    O.

What you're trying to do, can be done.   Each of the RDM machines must be unique for each machine.  the first invited who starts and attached to the device it locks for other machines to use.
