  You have apparent dbx file corruption.
   
  Spend most of your messages out of the Inbox, and then create the new box of sent, and sent items files after you move the messages you want to save to a local folder that you create.
   
  Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Note the location and navigate on it in Explorer Windows or, copy and paste in start | Run.
   
  In Windows XP, Win2K & Win2K3 the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show hidden files and folders under start | Control Panel | Folder Options icon | Opinion, or in Windows Explorer. It is a redundant layer of protection that devours the CPUs, slows down sending and receiving and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs, account setting changes and has even been responsible for the loss of messages.   OE and McAfee do not work well together.  See www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 at a minimum, you must disable the analysis of e-mail and antispam functionality and then remove your e-mail account and add it back again.  Then OE should work better.  Even better would be to remove McAfee and get something less invasive such as www.microsoft.com/security_essentials .  But this isn't a matter of OE you meet, but rather a McAfee publishes.  The messages are probably removed from the file and place the file is filled with zeros there where the messages were - that has been my experience anyway.  But then the OE database is not in agreement with what is actually there, and things OE even deleted messages from McAfee are still there.

  OE | Tools | Message rules | List of blocked senders. Highlight the first address on the list. Click: Edit | Type in the address you want to remove. (Amazon.com) invites: "this address already exists, are you sure you want to replace it? Click Yes. The address will now be at the top of the list. Remove it.
   
   
  In the message rules, if you have a delete it or move generally deleted items, check them carefully. If you have a rule for example that removes zon.com or thebay.com, they will also remove the messages from Amazon and eBay.

  A common cause of this is to have your program configured antivirus to analyze the messages, including outgoing mail.  If you can completely uninstall the AV program, and then reinstall it without the analysis feature mail.  If you can't do that, turn off scanning messages.  You will be just as safe.

  You can do this if the Server SMTP allows you to send from a location that you are not connected via their internet service.  So if you have this permission, go to tools | Accounts | Add mail.  Then under the account of property | You want to set the server for incoming mail to the POP3 account, and then the SMTP protocol for the other account that you use to send servers.  And then indicate whether or not the server requires authentication, and if yes, then you will need to put in the user name and password for the SMTP server it.  Under properties. Advanced to define appropriate ports that may be different from the default value according to e-mail accounts.  You can also check the "leave a copy of messages on the server" for accounts POP3, if you access messages from multiple computers.

  Once you have an account set up, then you can set others upward in the same way, but change the POP3 properties for each while leaving the SMTP ones the same.

  I needed to do a 'clean' of my OS, XP Pro SP3 install.  So I ran a back up prior to the re - install on an external hard drive.  I used integrated firm ware of the external hard drive to perform the back upward.

  After the re-install, I want to get some of the e-mail messages.  I can't find the external hard disk Outlook Express folder, but nothing in the folder has the appearance of a file that is an e-mail message.

  This makes me wonder, where Outlook Express to save e-mail messages, anyway?  Then maybe I could identify the record or file to restore.

  Prompt compaction is triggered whenever you close OE 100 times.  So if you compact manually, you don't get invited again until you close OE for another 100 times.  Unfortunately there is no way to change this.  Dbx files shall be compacted.  If they are not, they will move on to an enormous size, and then get corrupted, so it is important to pack on a regular basis.

  Go to view | Current view | Show all messages to make sure that you have just selected 'Hide read messages.

  If this does not help, check your Recycle Bin, the bak files which are dbx files, you can restore backups.  See www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#2

  If this does not help, then you will probably need my program DBXpress (www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/), which will extract the messages from individual dbx files, and if messages are no longer in the files, it can extract from the disc itself.

  From the beginning of this week, I get a pop-up message stating "To free up disk space, Outlook Express can compact messages".  This happens when that I start.  The fact is; I do not use Outlook Express or have installed.
