path to convert physical Linux then host on desktop

Hello

I'm hoping to use vCenter Converter Standalone to convert a physical Linux server to a virtual machine and host it on VMware Server, VMware Workstation, or an appliance in VMware player on a Windows box. The server to convert is very light so it shouldn't add too much overhead to the host.

Please could someone provide guidance if this path is possible? Converter Manual states that "the hosted destinations are not supported for the live Linux sources" in the selection of VMware Server as the destination. I currently do not have any type of running VMware environment and would be grateful for any advice.

Thank you very much.

Matt

chinwaa,

Welcome to the VMware Community Forums!

The manual is correct, because you have to P2V a Linux system to an ESX host first.  Thereafter, you can v2v down to VMware server.  It is the necessary way because the p2v process should work with features that are only available on ESX.

    HM, looking again at the partition incriminated, it's actually a swap partition. It should be pretty harmless to call disable, delete the partition, re-create it again with the right size and call swapon. However, although there is a change in the disk partition information, a backup is a good idea...

  • Convert the physical Linux machine with VMware Converter Standalone 4.0.1 on VMware Workstation

    Hello

    I work in a virtualization project, now I test and I want to test the new version of the converter, because I need to convert some Linux machines and I know that with this version is not difficult.

    I do not have the ready virtual infrastructure so I test on a workstation environment. I would like to know if someone has converted a physical Linux machine to virtual and if the destination has VMware workstation 6.5. I know that this is not supported, but this does not mean that you couldn't do.

    When I have to specify the type of destination, I got the error that you could see on the photo.

    Please let me know if you have tested this before and you know how to solve this problem.

    Thanks in advance!

    See you soon

    Malulas,

    Welcome to the Community Forums.

    To do a physical to virtual conversion, you MUST GO to ESX.  It is a requirement under the guidance of the user manual.

    If the virtual machine was already in ESX, you might be able to export to a workstation image while the ESX VM is powered off.

    Sorry for the bad news.

  • Convert the Linux server

    Can someone tell me if I can use the converter to convert a Linux server into a file, and then install ESX on the server that has been under Linux and then run the original server as a virtual server.

    Other ways to get there?

    Use the Converter 3.0.3.

    It can also save on local (or network) file suitable for the Desktop/server/player.

  • Best Linux for host? ... and ESX vs. Workstation

    I've been running VM Workstation since 1999.  I just built a physical machine for my lab at home I want to only run on VMS.  I have two questions.

    What is the best linux for VM Workstation 8 host?

    I went the compatitibility guide at:

    http://PartnerWeb.VMware.com/comp_guide2/search.php?deviceCategory=software & testConfig = 17

    and put:

    Workstation

    8.0

    all the

    all the

    Linux

    Desktop

    64

    and it happens with Mandriva and SUSE.  It's weird.  No Red Hat?  No Ubuntu?  No Debian?  Mandriva is a French company funded by the Russians, which hurts me a little inside, and SUSE is not free.  It makes me wonder if this page is current.

    Which leads to my next question. ... Are there not some hypervisor product that does not even need a host operating system?  What ESX?  I can get all the features of Workstation (snapshots, etc.) with this hypervisor product? ... and of course, I can't spend $2,000 for a lab at home.   It seems to me that to remember that one of these products is free,... was it ESXi?  Can someone explain the differences between the workstation and ESX in a few sentences.  But if I need the version ESX is $2000, then too bad.

    I suppose that, ideally, I would like to install Workstation as a hypervisor (no host operating system).  Is there anyway to achieve this?  What do you suggest me?

    ESXi uses a very minimal video driver - a computer display virtual itself is not possible
    This is why you must use a second physical machine to view virtual machines

    inside the virtual machines, you get only a virtual video card - playing the latest games inside a virtual machine is not possible

    > or that, it cannot run on an i7? ... once again, really?

    This is not correct - do not know who told you that...
    ESXi is very picky when it comes to disk controllers - fake Raids and cheap stuff is not supported - but it will work with normal SATA drives

  • Converter and Linux Swap

    Hello

    Why the converter cannot see Linux Swap partitions? I created a VM without any problems, except for the fact that it is not at all the second partition of the physical server. This is the original arrangement. Virtual MACHINE contains only the first and the third partition.

    # fdisk-l

    Disk/dev/cciss/c0d0: 146.8 GB, 146807930880 bytes
    255 heads, 32 sectors/track, 35139 bottles
    Units = cylinders of 8160 * 512 = 4177920 bytes

    Device boot start end blocks Id system
    / dev/CCISS/c0d0p1 * 1 26 106064 83 Linux
    / dev/CCISS/c0d0p2 27 1054 4194240 82 Linux swap / Solaris
    / dev/CCISS/c0d0p3 1055 35139 139066800 83 Linux

    HM, the SWAP partition is recognized correctly

    -->
    -->
    -->
    -->

    However, there is no volume which corresponds to this partition. Are the recognized only the volumes ' / ' and ' / boot ' (no Exchange). The swap partition is activated?

    Converter detects the SWAP partitions active file/proc/swaps by iteration. What is the result of

    # cat /proc/swaps

    on the source?

  • Blue screen after converting physical to vm.

    Hello

    I use vmware converter and convert the physical server, a VMware server 2.

    This server is a single PC with a SATA drive.

    32-bit ST as OS W2K3.

    After the conversion has been done, I tried to start the machine (a virtual nine) but I get a blue screen and restart recursive.

    somrthing I can do?

    Thank you.

    This means that your system cannot boot from the drive, because it's not having the right set of disk drivers. Your virtual machine's configuration with a SCSI card virtual windows XP isn't the drivers for. The solution is either switch over IDE (not recommended for performance reasons) or to add the drivers yourself.

    If you migrate a physical machine to virtual and still have the original machine / machine around you can try to inject drivers before taking the clone. VMware converter normally changes your virtual disk in a free scsi drive (you can check that in the vmx file is generated, it is a text file with the virtual hardware configuration) you can also select use a buslogic scsi adapter.

    There is a virtual disk with the required driver for BUSlogic available here: http://download3.vmware.com/software/vmscsi-1.2.0.4.flp

    If you can start in safe mode, and then press F6 during the boot and load the driver OR boot from a recovery disk and install the driver then. While you're there, uninstall all old hardware management software because it does not in any case when virtual and can cause all sorts of strange side effects.

    Edit: it's too bad you can't see the thread here while meeting. My answer was for XP so that your guest OS seems to be Windows 2003. Windows 2003 should have drivers for LSI already on the operating system drive. Check which virtual SCSI adapter you are using, if it is not clear, please attach the vmware.log of your virtual machine file to this topic.

  • Possible to convert physical system disk already in vmdk format?

    Duplicating a lot of physical W2K3 led to VMDK as a guest, so all the physical disks are already in vmdk format.

    Now try and do start as guests. Is it possible with converter?

    If not with converter, then what?

    > Converter not set the active disk when it converts?

    Converter is not perfect.

    You try to find out why a system does not start.

    One of the first things you check if the startup disk is active - no matter if it's a virtual machine or a real machine.

    How do you verify that? -Yes - boot a LiveCD and leans on the disks

  • Remove file path when converting to PDF format?

    Is there a setting somewhere that I can change so that when I convert a TXT or HTML file to PDF path does not appear on the bottom of each PDF page? Currently the conversion I get something along these lines of file:///F|/Folder/254126.txt[06-Aug-11 20:34:02] on the bottom in a font smaller than the rest of the page.

    Is it possible to disable this or is just something I have to live with?

    I use Adobe Acrobat X Pro.

    Parameters for the conversion of the HTML and text pages are not in the preferences panel, they are buried in the web capture widget:

    Open the tool pane > Pages > more Insert Options > create PDF from Web Page.

    Click on "settings".

    Uncheck "headers to Place... ", click OK and then cancel to close the capture dialog box.
