  1. What version of Windows are you using?
  2. What do you see under sound, video and game controllers?

  You can try the above steps through the steps below.

  Method 1

  1. press on Windows Logo key + X. Click on Device Manager.

  2. search for the sound, video and game controllers.

  3. under it, you will find high definition Audio Device.

  4 right-click on it, you will see turn off the option.

  5. click on disable.

  5. again right click on high definition Audio Device to activate.

  Method 2

  1. Press on Windows Logo key + X.  Click on Control Panel.
  2. Click hardware and sound.
  3. Double click on sound.
  4. Under the playback tab, you should see your HDMI device.
  5. Right-click on it and select set as default device.
  6. Click Ok.

  I have a XPS 17 L701X- and I'm trying to connect it via HDMI cable for a 32 '' LCD TV Phillips girlfriend with backlight.   Well Mitch, I advanced and bought this adapter part and, lo and behold, the work of workaround! First try also (at least in my case)-without debugging or diagnose.

  Process, my three steps:

  (1) I plugged the adapter Mini DisplayPort for my XPS (around the back next to the HDMI port); (2) I connected the HDMI cable to the adapter (the other end of the cable is already connected HDTV); (3) I have pressing F1 on my XPS and duplicate selected (key Windows + P or "Connect to a projector" If you work via Control Panel).

  (I used StarTech Mini DisplayPort HDMI adapter)
