PE 2950 III with ESXi free version?

I have a PowerEdge 2950 III server on the way and I want to launch the free VMWare ESXi version. I know that Dell makes their own version (paying) with the built-in drivers... Will the free version to be an option for me, or it will never work because the drivers needed/missing? Or maybe I just need to build my own ISO and integrate the drivers of 2950 in it?

Version of Dell isn't a paid version.  It is also free; they have, as a service to their clients, customized to include drivers for most of their systems.  You can build your own by integrating the drivers into the image manually, but that would be stupid given it already exists and is made by someone who knows what they are doing.

  • Devices USB 3.0 not being seen by 5.5 ESXI (free version)

I'm under 5.5 ESXI (free version) and I have recently just got 2 external drives 5 to, these are going to be my new NAS readers who are easily made by samba on a virtual machine Windows Ubuntu LTS 14.04. When I plug the readers to a port USB 2.0, the ESXI OS will detect them and allow me to add them to a virtual machine but USB 2.0 are slow and these drives are capable 3.0 and my motherboard has 2 3.0 ports then why not try to get the extra speed. When I plug these drives into the USB 3.0 ports OS ESXI cannot see them and when you try to add USB devices to the virtual computer it says no device available. No idea as to why this is? IM guess 3.0 is supported on ESXI 5.5 (free version) because it allows me to add a USB 3.0 controller support. Thanks in advance for any help.

    FIXED!

I have SSH on the server and typed this command:

    lsusb

It gave me a list of all my usb ports and devices. My 3.0 ports not appear. So I started the USB 3.0 xhci driver by typing this:

    vmkload_mod xhci

    then I typed in:

    lsusb

again and then is! my cameras are now available!

Add this command to the file /etc/rc.local.d/local.sh that it will always start with the loaded discs.

  • ESXI free Version host failure - how to recover virtual machines?

    Hi all

I ran a VMWare lab at home with a free version of ESXI 4.1.

My server does not and I have to reset all the settings management of ESXI and I lost my virtual machines.

I solved the problem, but I lost the virtual machine.

When I navigate through the data store I can see the virtual hard disk for my servers.

Is there a way to recover these virtual machines?

I guess that I'm not the first to ask this question, so if you could point me to any page with some instruction, it would be great.

    Thanks in advance,

    Fabio

Welcome to the VMware forums communities.  In each folder of the virtual machine, you should see a VMX file for the virtual machine.  This is the configuration file.  Right-click on it and select Add to the inventory.  Then follow the instructions of the wizard and after the virtual machine market.  If your network configuration is the same as previously, then you should be good to go.

  • Save one ESXi (free version) to another

I have two servers ESXi I want to keep synchronized. Both servers have internal storage. A server is currently in production and contains all VM.   If I have a hardware failure on the production server, I want to switch to the backup server as quickly as possible.

It seems that the only commercial backup product that supports the free version of ESXi is Veeam Backup.  However, Veeam Backup currently does not support ESXi as a replication target.

My only option now, I guess, is to back up the production server for the internal storage of the backup server and then do a restore on the backup server, if necessary - correct?  Is ghettoVCB.sh my best option for this?  If so, this will work with the free version of ESXi?

    Thanks for any help.

One option is to use ghettoVCB, although you'll have to SCP manually backups to your target host, it does not backup on another host. If you have shared storage such as NFS/SAN you can easily keep the two hosts synchronized, but if you're just using local storage, you'll need to script replication between the two once backups have taken place on your source host.

You should look at setting up a server NFS in this way you shared storage between two hosts

  • Adobe Reader - how to add page with the free version numbers?

    Hey guys,.

Imagine that I have a PDF file and I want to create a new one by selecting some pages out of it. I know that this is all just possible using PDFcreator but I want to add page numbers. As far as I know that's not possible with the free version of Adobe, unless I would add the page number on each page by using a text box. I want to do different PDF catalogs for page numbers are really necessary. You have an idea how to solve this problem? You know that's about the only thing I need to add which means that it is not worth buying the Pro version. Unfortunately, I only got the PDF and I can't work on it for example with MS word before I have to export it. Do you know if there is a way to add the page numbers with a free version? There might be additional free software that allows this?

    Thanks for your support!

You might be able to use Acrobat Standard (if Windows). Adobe have no free solution for your problem.

There is unfortunately quite hard limits, for example 8 GB vRAM, it's the total amount of RAM to virtual machines. I suggest that you look at version 4.1 and not 5.0.

(VMware is however always claim that the virtual machines on the free vSphere Hypervisor could use unlimited RAM. It is probably not correct.)

  • vCenter with ESXi (free)

Hi, I recently bought a copy of Essentials Plus and really vCenter and want to manage the free ESXi hosts that I try to deploy.

Essentials resembled a great product, but I quickly hit the limit of 3 Server and do not plan on using shared storage/HA or vMotion.

I noticed that I can buy vCenter Standard or Foundation, but I don't see any info regarding if I can handle the free ESXi version with it. Also Storage vMotion looked interesting and wonder if that can be used to move VMs from local storage on 1 host local storage on a host and I have to buy an ESXi LIC for that or is it available in the free version?

    Thank you

Based on licensing, free ESXi cannot be managed by vCenter.  Storage vMotion is a feature under license for a purchase of a license of the company would be required and in addition, a facility such as a NAS or a SAN shared storage is necessary for svMotion to work.

  • ESXi free version - remote access

    Hello

I wonder if it is possible to remotely control the free version of ESXi. Everything what I need to be able to do is clone, start and stop virtual machines, and I'm happy to use telnet or other command line tools. Is it posible to use vmrun as with VMWare Server? Or a similar tool? Or is the free version has deliberately hampered in that regard.

Thanks for any help you can offer,

    Phil

    Or activate the ssh.

    (1) on the console of the ESXi host, press ALT - F1 to access the console window.

    (2) enter unsupported in the console and press ENTER. You won't see the text you type.

    (3) If you typed in not supported properly, you will see the Tech Support Mode warning and request a password. Enter the password for the root connection.

    (4) you should see the prompt of ~ #. Edit the inetd.conf file (enter the vi /etc/inetd.confcommand).

    (5) find the line that starts with #ssh and remove the #. Then save the file. If you start using vi, then move the cursor to the line of #ssh and then press the Insert key. Move the cursor on a space, and then press BACKSPACE to remove the #. Press ESC , and then type in : wq to save the file and exit vi. If you make a mistake, you can press the ESC key and then type that information: q! exit vi without saving the file.

    (6) once you have closed the vi editor, run the command /sbin/services.sh restart to restart management services. You will now be able to connect to the ESXi host with a SSH client.

  • DL120 G6 Proliant Smart Array RAID with ESXi (free)

    Hello

We have ESXi running on a DL120 G6 with 8 GB of RAM, installed via the website of VMWare Go.

The server has 4 disks configured in the BIOS of the server for RAID 1 (2 and 2 mirrors).

How can I tell the server to use the RAID configuration as at the moment we seem to use only a single disc of 4.  Currently, I am able to add one of the spare disks 3 as independent data stores.

Is there a BIOS setting that I need to configure to enable ESXi to use RAID?

    Thank you

    Daren

The default RAID controller DL120 G6 is a Smart Array B110i, who is not a hardware RAID controller supported (see http://www.vmware.com/go/hcl for the supported RAID controllers) you will be able to use this controller with ESXi RAID functionality.

  • Free version of ESXi 4.1 CPU with 8 cores

    Hello

I would like some advice on the question of whether the free version of ESXi 4.1 supports servers with 4 CPU core CPU 8, because I find some contradictory documents on some he said supports only 6 core CPU and not 8. Can someone advise or confirm.

I think the EULA may need to be clarified.  If we ignore free ESXi for awhile, this document - https://www.vmware.com/download/eula/multicore.html - suggests that it's OK to run vSphere Standard for example on processors with 12 cores.   I only give 2 CPUs per physical CPU licenses as each license would cover only 6 of the 12 hearts.  Here is the example that includes the document

    > Example: A customer has already purchased vSphere Enterprise license. Remember that each license of vSphere Enterprise can be deployed on a > processor with up to 6 cores. However, the customer now wants to use these licenses on a newly acquired server with processor with 12 cores. > The client has two options:

    > Upgrade from the company of vSphere vSphere Enterprise Plus license, which provides a right to 12 strands and extra GOLD

    > 2 two vSphere Enterprise licenses for each processor with 12 cores.

It would not appear that vSphere 6 basic editions are hard coded to ignore carrots on it 6 but rather you must just the correct license in place.  With ESXi free since you can register an unlimited number (99 I think?)  processors and in essense, you have enough licenses processors to double for each physical processor.  It would not be what they want and it can be "fixed" in the future, but I'm not sure it would be a EULA violation vSphere.  The doc covers products 'vSphere '.

    This affect which products VMware?

    > This strategy affects the VMware vSphere products i.e. vSphere Essentials, vSphere Essentials Plus, vSphere Standard, Enterprise vSphere, vSphere > advanced and vSphere Enterprise Plus

so maybe they need to clarify their position for free ESXi.

  • The free version of ESXI 5 can do grouping

We are a small engineering company planning on buying 2 servers in a rack mount with two processors and had planned to start with the free version of VMware and then passing to the paid version in a year.  The free version can do the grouping with the servers with many CPU sockets?

Sorry if this question has already been asked but I'm new to the site, and we expect the purchase soon.

Hello and welcome to the Forums!

In order to consolidate the ESX host, you'll need vcenter but also of shared storage.  So, no you cannot cluster 2 hypervisor (ESXi) ESX hosts.

  • Free version of ESXi can support for configuration of start and stop virtual machines via vSphere Client?

I have read and found some documents on ESXi.

According to the documents, I know that ESXi free version does not support some advanced virtual machine configurations and does not support write to ESXi host permission. But when I download ESXi from vmware.com, I can't find the free version. He will always be a trial of the licensed version edition because I can always do the configuration of start and stop virtual machines via vSphere Client installation. I can also run scripts (lamw) pl in vMA to stop the ESXi host (authorization to write ok?)

Then I confused. How can I get the really free version of ESXi? Or will the free version after 60 days of evaluation?

Start/stop above configuration is in vSphere Client via 'Configuration'-> "start/stop VM"-> "Properties"... «-> "Allow the virtual computers start and stop automatically with the system" actions setting and stop virtual machines can be configured to "comments"turn off computer"or"Suspend".» Can any body tell me if it's supported by ESXi free edition?

Is the free version of vSphere Client too? Because when I use the vSphere Client, he told me that I have 60 days of evaluation. This confused me again. I think that vSphere Client is always free, am I right?

Any suggestion or advice is much appreciated.  _

    Micky

Configuration of start and stop virtual machines is available with the free version and licensed, with the free version you would be configured everything via vSphere Client, where as with a licensed version, you can optionally use scripts to configure it and also issue restarts/stops using scripts.

Second, shutdownHostViaSOAPAPICall.pl for the version licensed and free of ESX (i), this script will work in both free and licensed because it uses direct SOAP calls emulating the vSphere Client communication. Take a look at the documentation for details, but this of course is not supported by VMware.
