Permanent delete photos on external hard drive

Hello

in Lightroom, I imported some photos from my SD card and they stored on an external hard drive. After going through, I wanted to delete some of them. When I choose "remove hard drive ' photos get removed the external drive but copied in the trash of my PC.

How can I avoid that? I do not want to be put in the trash of my PC, I want just that they went directly.

Any suggestions?

Thank you

Each drive is connected to your computer, whether they are internal or external, and is formatted to NTFS format has a basket that relates to the trash on your desktop. No file got moved or copied to your internal drive. They got just placed in the trash they have been deleted from disk.

To avoid that you can set the Recycle Bin to delete the file directly without going through the trash. But I suggest you do that.

Just right click on the Recycle Bin, it is to say the trash, then select "Empty Recycle Bin".

    1. exit Photos

2 copy the library of your folder on the external drive.

3 press and hold the option (or alt) key while launching Photos. In the menu that appears, select "Choose Library" and navigate to the new location. From there it will be the default location of your library.

4 test the library, and when you are sure that all is well, trash on your HD internal for free space.

  • Library of photos on external hard drive does not open

So, I recently backed up my 2012 macbook pro on an external hard drive using time machine and wiped the computer. The hard drive shows that my old hard drive was saved (there ~ used 400GB the 1 TB), however when I try to open my photo library, it tells me that files cannot be saved? I was wondering if there's another way to open these files in addition to using pictures? the file says it's big 235 GB so I know that my photos and videos are out there. If someone could help me that would be great! The last 5 years of my life are in this file. (,:

You cannot open a Time Machine backup of the library directly. You must first restore somewhere.

Time Machine is a backup tool, not a tool for archiving. It gives you a window of time retrieve data that has been lost in the backup source. You can't count on it to keep the files you want to keep indefinitely. All these files should be saved with the rest of your original data. The files that you delete from the source volumes will be finally removed from backups, after a variable delay which depends on your usage model and the size of the backup volume.

  • Can I download originals to iCloud for mac before move library of photos on external hard drive

I moved my library of photos from my laptop on a thunderbolt 2 TB external drive. I opened pictures (option click) and chose this place to open. Then I opened the photos and click preferences on use this as library of photos of systems. I checked iCloud and he said that I had referenced files that could not be downloaded and consolidate them. I do not know which files are "referenced". These would be photos of the former library of iPhotos that was imported in the Photos. I have more than 20,000 pictures on iCloud. Will they all finally downloaded to my new library of pictures on the external hard drive? Or I have to download the originals on my mac before moving the library of photos on the external drive. I maybe need all start over and do it - except that I don't have enough space on my drive SSD from Mac to keep them all.

Any suggestions? My plan was to have my photos on iCloud, the originals on disk external hard and then the mac and HD on my time capsule. Access iCloud on my iPad photos air and iPhones, iPad pro.

When I look at the size of the library of photos in my pictures folder, it is about 12 GB - there is also an iPhotos library in the images folder which is 63 GB. I think I have to combine these files but don't know how to do this. If I also moves the iPhotos library to the new external hard drive which will be done automatically. Obviously I have not deleted the folders in the library on my Mac until it works.

They must synchronize the external disk if it's where you said Photos your library is (that you have).

Try to create a new smart album to see what is not downloaded.

    I'm on 10.10.5 Yosemite

Re: Mac Photos - how best export / save selective photos on an external hard drive and clean disk space.

Problem: Photos to consume a lot of space and want to save / export pictures from 2011 to 2014 (value of 4 years) and just keep the current year (2015) for example. How do I get there?

Question: Mac 'Photo' stores all the photos in a single folder and access this file level understand I'm going to Show Package Contents > Masters after a right-click on the photo library.

Then, you can view all the files.

    Step 1

Is the best way to reach above it hang out in mac external drive 'Photos', I created via the Finder?

    Step 2

Then delete the files in the directory of Masters or the photo library

    Questions with above?

Thanks a lot for the advice and thoughts from anyone.

Never make changes to the internal structure of the iPhoto or the library of Photos with the Finder or any other app ever.

To do what you want to do first export the images of Photos:

    File-> Export

and send them to your favorite place.

Subsequently, remove them from the library using the library interface.

    This trick of the user

    https://discussions.Apple.com/docs/doc-4921

a details of the options in the iPhoto export dialog. In a few minor differences, the options of Photos are the same.

That said, these are the images also on the iCloud library? Because if that will complicate things greatly. In addition, what you will lose the functionality of non-destructive editing. Better to save the images in a library of Photos and keep all of your options.

You can do this in several ways - split the existing library or create a new one and hover over the images. There are different ways to do it depending on what you choose.

Alternatively, simply move the entire library to an external.

  • Download iCloud photos to External Hard drive maxing out on my Mac hard drive

My photo library was therefore mainly on iCloud due to its size, but I wanted have also stored it locally. So I bought a large external hard drive, plugged and copied my library of Photos of her. I made library of the external hard drive the library 'system' and click on ' download originals of this Mac. "

My photo library increased from 5 GB to 127.5 GB local. Strangely, my iMac's hard drive began to be filled with hundreds of gigabytes of 'Other' files. Near 458 GB of "Other" files. I had to move even more files on the external drive just to make my iMac service as the new mysterious files are maxing out my hard drive.

I'm sure that the download is at the origin of these mysterious "other" files. The download is almost complete. Is what I assume to be deleted by the Photos app temporary system files? I can't find the source of these files. My iMac utility disk tells me I have files over 121 million, while that the Finder tells me that I have only ~ 1 800 elements.

Should I just make the trip to the Genius Bar, or this should be resolved once the download is complete? Late 2009 iMac, 500 GB; 1.3 photos.

    Thanks in advance.

Let the full download and then check - it will probably be fine

  • Move photos on external hard drive after migrating from iPhoto to Photos

I have a lot of photos and have you run out of space on my MacBook.  After doing some reading, I discovered that I should be bale to move my library to an external hard drive, then the point of Photos to run from the external hard drive.

I have recently updated to El Capitan, and as part of this upgrade that my photos have been migrated from iPhoto to the Photos.  I just checked the current location of my library and I found two.  One is named Photo library and which resembles the pictures one use which makes sense.  However, I also have a file called iPhoto library and it is listed as a library migrated under file type.

My question is, when I copy my pictures on the external hard drive also I copy the migrated thus iPhoto library?

My question is, when I copy my pictures on the external hard drive also I copy the migrated thus iPhoto library?

Yes, if you want to free up your internal disk storage moving two libraries of the iPhoto library you have migrated your external drive and the new library of Photos.

The two libraries share the storage for the original images and previews.  As long as one of the libraries is always on the internal disk and using storage, storage is not released: see: Photos saves disk space to share images with your iPhoto or Aperture - Apple Support libraries

Drag the two libraries to your external drive, then double click the pictures library to open it in photos and test it. Once you are convinced that the copied library works well, you can delete the original in the internal drive.  Do the same for the copied iPhoto Library if you have installed iPhoto.

  • Catalogue of confusion after the removal of the photos on external hard drive. [was: help!]

I tried to be smart and I bought an external hardrive to free up some space on my laptop.  I transferred all my photos to the hardrive thought that I would be able to work on these photos in lightroom, as long as I had the hard drive plugged into my laptop.  Well this is not the case apparently.  So I imported all the photos into lightroom from the hard drive.  With the hard drive plugged into the laptop I can access all my pictures, but the catalogs that I was editing have lost all their changes.  I tried to open the backup lightroom from yesterday, and nothing happens.  If I select one of my catalogs that none of the images are there, he also says missing photos.  So I tried to locate all missing photos, and nothing happened.  All the photos are in lightroom, they appear in the library under the external hardrive.  But I can't shoot in my catalogs and cannot roll back changes to the photos I was editing when I put all my photos on the external hard drive.

    Hi Amanda,.

You get the workflow a bit confused here. It is hard to follow all of the steps you took, but I will try to explain the correct procedure.

    1. you have a Lightroom Catalog and all images in the catalog pointing to a location on the internal drive (ideally, it would be a series of folders under the folder of a high level, to make it easier to step 3 below).

    2. copy the image of folders containing images of the Interior on the external drive. You now have two copies of your images.

    3. open Lightroom and you should see all your images again. Open the files Panel and right-click on the top-level folder that contains all the image files (this is where a single top-level folder is priceless). Choose 'location of folder update... »

    4. navigate to the top level on the external drive folder and choose that. Your Lightroom Catalog is now oriented to the external hard drive.

At this point, you can go on using Lightroom normally. You can copy, move or delete the images of your internal drive, because Lightroom is their use is no longer.

Note that in step 3 above, if all your image files are not contained in a single top-level folder, you will need to repeat steps 3 and 4 several times, once for each top-level folder.

  • Select transfer photos on external hard drive

I want to only transfer SOME of my photos in my photo library on an external hard drive to free up some memory on my computer.

I started to do drag and drop single photos in a folder on my hard drive (Seagate Back Up more). Although it seems to work, I noticed that each photo that I transfer the file size seems to decrease as I transfer. I want to assure you that I won't lose resolution or quality in my pictures that I transfer, but what gives? Not sure if there's a more efficient or better way to go about doing what I do. I tried searching online and everything tells me how to transfer entire library and I really don't want to do that.

Any suggestions? I'm nervous to start transfer photos if my picture quality is potentially declining.

You select the photos you want to move to SMT and use the file export ➙ ➙ export original unmodified photo XXXX menu option.  This will give you full original sizes.

  • copy photos on external hard drive

Can someone give me a method step by step to copy the photos and videos on my photos/iphotos to my mac to an external hard drive please? As far as I understand it, is not simply a matter of copy and pasting. Or is it? Sorry in advance, I'm not very technical interest.

Do you want only the pictures and videos on the external drive, or do you want a backup of your iPhoto Library library or a library of Photos?

For a full backup, select the iPhoto library and photo library in the Finder and drag the libraries in the folder to your external drive.  To store libraries, the external drive must have the file system format "Mac OS extended (journaled).

If you only want copies of your photos and videos, export them Photos and iPhoto.

See Terence Devlinuser Tip: export for iPhoto

It explains how to export your photos from iPhoto.  Use the same method in Photos to export your photos in folders on the external hard drive.

  • Data being deleted on my external HARD drive when I copy it

I have a hard drive of 160 GB extertnal USB and when I copy new data he deletion of old data. What's wrong with it and how can I stop it delete all my old data?

    Neil

    HI Neil,

The only way, your data can be removed is if you copy new data to the same file/folder name to him and then click 'Yes' or 'Yes to all' in the warning box that appears informing you that the file/folder already exists.

If you use a third party application to do the copy for you (such as bckup/restore utility) then this will also have a similar warning window if such a situation arises, and you also have to confirm that you want to overwrite your existing data.

Short of a malfunction of the external hard drive, there are no circumstances in which the operating system can 'accidentally' too write your data.

    Kind regards

  • Library of photos on external hard drive: not possible repair

    Hello world

Today, when I tried to open my library of Photos, Photos crashed. After I have reopened, Photos asked that the library must be repaired. I started who, but after 2%, Photos crashed with "an unexpected error has occurred." A restart does not solve this problem. I still can't view the contents of the library package.

I saw on messages earlier (for example, 10.10.3 Photos can not repair permissions), the output of this Terminal command can reveal the underlying error:

    find ~ $TMPDIR...------(-+ flags sappnd, uappnd, schg, uchg o! - user $UID o! - perm-600 o - acl-) 2 >/dev/null | WC-l

Outputs this line in my case: 4471

Please note that I'm storing my photo library, including all images imported into a separate external hard drive connected via USB.

So perhaps the command above (where I'm not sure what it does) may not be to give the required output to track down the problem.

Following the crash of the pictures, here is the output of the Console:

I have a MacBook Pro with a solid state drive that does not have enough space to store my photos, so I want to put all my photos on a small 2 TB external HD Question: when I import my pictures from the camera card into Lightroom, how can I put and keep all the photos on the external hard drive? Can you please tell me how I created the HD to make...! I know that this probably isn't difficult, but I want to do it properly. Thanks a lot for your help.

Setting up an external hard drive is really very simple, I think. Of course, it must be connected to your computer. When you open the import dialog box and begin to set up your preferences, you should see the external hard drive as one of your choices. You can select the external hard drive, and then choose to import your images into a subfolder that will appoint you. Then all you have to do is to import the images and they will be exported to the external hard drive.
