Catalogue of confusion after the removal of the photos on external hard drive. [was: help!]
I tried to be smart and I bought an external hardrive to free up some space on my laptop. I transferred all my photos to the hardrive thought that I would be able to work on these photos in lightroom, as long as I had the hard drive plugged into my laptop. Well this is not the case apparently. So I imported all the photos into lightroom from the hard drive. With the hard drive plugged into the laptop I can access all my pictures, but the catalogs that I was editing have lost all their changes. I tried to open the backup lightroom from yesterday, and nothing happens. If I select one of my catalogs that none of the images are there, he also says missing photos. So I tried to locate all missing photos, and nothing happened. All the photos are in lightroom, they appear in the library under the external hardrive. But I can't shoot in my catalogs and cannot roll back changes to the photos I was editing when I put all my photos on the external hard drive.
Hi Amanda,.
You get the workflow a bit confused here. It is hard to follow all of the steps you took, but I will try to explain the correct procedure.
1. you have a Lightroom Catalog and all images in the catalog pointing to a location on the internal drive (ideally, it would be a series of folders under the folder of a high level, to make it easier to step 3 below).
2. copy the image of folders containing images of the Interior on the external drive. You now have two copies of your images.
3. open Lightroom and you should see all your images again. Open the files Panel and right-click on the top-level folder that contains all the image files (this is where a single top-level folder is priceless). Choose 'location of folder update... »
4. navigate to the top level on the external drive folder and choose that. Your Lightroom Catalog is now oriented to the external hard drive.
At this point, you can go on using Lightroom normally. You can copy, move or delete the images of your internal drive, because Lightroom is their use is no longer.
Note that in step 3 above, if all your image files are not contained in a single top-level folder, you will need to repeat steps 3 and 4 several times, once for each top-level folder.

best way to transfer photos from the iMac on external hard drive
If you are mobile loose photo files, drag them in here and if you are going to be removed from the inside, keep a copy on a second disc.
If you move an iPhoto, Aperture, or photo library, make sure that the external hard drive contains a volume to the Mac OS Extended format, drag the library there, launch the application with the key Option key, choose it, confirm that it works and if you are going to be remove from the inside, keep a copy of it on a second disc.

The best way to remove the bitlocker password is to follow these steps.
(a) connect your external hard drive in the computer.
(b) click Start, click Control Panel.
(c) while on the Panel, the icon find Bitlocker Drive Encryption , click
(d) you will see all the partitions on your hard disk and their encryption status, whether encrypted or not.
(e) on one that is encrypted, you will find an option to turn off bitlocker. Click on it and wait for the machine to decrypt.

Gets the air space, copy Photos on external hard drive.
If I copy and paste the picture on a USB application (which works very well, I have all my pictures) is the photo still be there when I open the app copied on my computer once I have them deleted on my Mac? I would like to remove all the photos from the first photo app that I have to make room, but keep photos somewhere (not iCloud).
I would also like to know if after I open the old one and adds new photos of Photos on the Photos app, which is now on my external hard drive. (somewhat like fusion of the old and the new) Is this possible?
Thank you very much!
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled)
1. exit Photos
2 copy the library of your folder on the external drive.
3 press and hold the option (or alt) key while launching Photos. In the menu that appears, select "Choose Library" and navigate to the new location. From there it will be the default location of your library.
4 test the library, and when you are sure that all is well, trash on your HD internal for free space.

Change the password on external hard drive
Hi all
on my iMac 21.5 ", I recently updated my Mac HD internal to El Capitan 10.11. There are now several major programs (for example MPEG Streamclip and Photoshop elements 11) which worked fine under Yosemite, but are not compatible with El Capitan.
On an external hard drive, I installed Yosemite 10.10.2 in late 2014 when it was the last version of OS X. Only, I installed a system on the usual external drive boot on the internal HD failure. All of these programs (also installed on the external hard drive) work very well in Yosemite.
When I start on the hard disc to access these programs, I had problems when I need to make changes for which the system requires a user and a password. I don't remember what they were. Is it possible to change the password (given that I can identify the user name in the "Users" folder), please?
Best regards, paulranger1.
Please open the Startup disk preferences window and select the volume on the external hard disk. You must change this selection on the internal drive after the reset of the password.
Start in recovery mode. When OS X Utilities window, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
in the menu bar at the top of the screen, not one of the items in the OS X Utilities window.
In the window that opens, type this:
resetp
Press the tab key. The partial order you entered will automatically end this:
resetpassword
Press return. Opens a window to reset the password. Close the Terminal window to get him out of the way.
Select the boot volume ("Macintosh HD", unless you have given it a different name) if not already selected. You won't be able to do this if FileVault is turned on.
Select your username in the menu option allows you to select the account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It is safer to choose a password that includes only the characters a - z, A - Z and 0-9.
Select
▹ Restart
in the menu bar.
You should now be able to login with the new password, but will reset the keychain (empty). If you have forgotten the password for the keychain (which is normally the same as the password for the connection), there is no way to recover it.

Save the backup on external hard drive
I was keeping my backup on my external hard drive from Seagate. But now my Seagate doesn't appear in my computer drive D: and e: no, what do I do? and how to correct for the Seagate external shows up as E: did know my PC that the Seagate is my hard drive?
Possibly a flash stick had taken D at the time and hit Seagate to E?
You can always go back and change it, follow these steps for the drive - letter add, change or remove
It is not really important, unless he screwed up somehow the configuration of your hard drive, which I doubt.
But just to be sure that disk - management post a screenshot Image

I used Seagate FreeAgent as my external hard drive for more than a month now, but recently I am unable to access Windows 7 asks me to format it to use it. Somehow I can format the HDD without losing my data? Or does perform a work around?
Hi NuVille,
Before perform us any of the steps, first of all I suggest you to create a backup of the data stored in your external hard drive on another computer.
To save the data, you can connect your external hard drive on another computer and copy all the files and folders on the other computer. Later, you can connect the external drive to the Windows 7 computer and try to run the disk error checking and check if that helps you solve the problem.
Access the link below and follow the steps to check the drive for errors and fix it.
http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/check-a-drive-for-errorsAfter completing the disc you error checking, try to check if you can access the drive.
If the steps above do not I suggest you try to format the hard drive. Access the link below and follow the steps to format the hard drive.
http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/create-and-format-a-hard-disk-partitionNote: there is no way to format without losing any data on the disk. Formatting the drive will erase all data. This is why you must back up the data before formatting the hard drive.
I hope this helps. Let us know the results.
