Data being deleted on my external HARD drive when I copy it

I have a hard drive of 160 GB extertnal USB and when I copy new data he deletion of old data. What's wrong with it and how can I stop it delete all my old data?

Neil

HI Neil,

The only way, your data can be removed is if you copy new data to the same file/folder name to him and then click 'Yes' or 'Yes to all' in the warning box that appears informing you that the file/folder already exists.

If you use a third party application to do the copy for you (such as bckup/restore utility) then this will also have a similar warning window if such a situation arises, and you also have to confirm that you want to overwrite your existing data.

Short of a malfunction of the external hard drive, there are no circumstances in which the operating system can 'accidentally' too write your data.

Kind regards

  • Permanent delete photos on external hard drive

    Hello

in Lightroom, I imported some photos from my SD card and they stored on an external hard drive. After going through, I wanted to delete some of them. When I choose "remove hard drive ' photos get removed the external drive but copied in the trash of my PC.

How can I avoid that? I do not want to be put in the trash of my PC, I want just that they went directly.

    Any suggestions?

    Thank you

Each drive is connected to your computer, whether they are internal or external, and is formatted to NTFS format has a basket that relates to the trash on your desktop. No file got moved or copied to your internal drive. They got just placed in the trash they have been deleted from disk.

To avoid that you can set the Recycle Bin to delete the file directly without going through the trash. But I suggest you do that.

Just right click on the Recycle Bin, it is to say the trash, then select "Empty Recycle Bin".

  • final cut stop recognizing my external hard drive when updating to yosemite

I have a mac book pro, and I work a lot in the final cut, 6 months ago I bought an external hard drive (WD 4to) just to keep all the projects, events and original media in here, but came to yosemite... I had to update to yosemite for many reasons, the problem was that I had to update final cut as well because it would not run more, so I've updated (10.2.1), but now it does not recognize my hard drive and obviously not events and projects are visible... any help?

What is the computer? How the drive connected? How it is formatted? Is used for Time Machine? What version you used to create the projects and events?

  • Photo date change during transfer to external hard drive from the "Photos" application

    Hello

When I try to transfer the images to my request for 'Photo' on my Macbook (OS X Yosemite) to a hard drive external, the dates and times of the images change.

I would like to transfer only some of my images on the hard drive, so I can't make time machine.

Is it possible to keep the dates and hours of original photos when copying them?

Thank you very much for your help!

Select the photos and export (menu, file == > export)-this will include the Photo with date and time metadata in EXIF/IPTC fields for use by any porgram Photo (you can check this by using Preview)-as you create new files file metadata will obviously be new but we can't change the photo metadata

The device is a hard drive (250 gb) bought in 2006.   LaCie support has provided relevant solutions.

I disconnected the USB line, reconnected with the power of the unit it turned on and off while only plugged, unplugged, and made all possible combinations of many times. My computer does not recognize anything.

I can't find it in my computer, and also, the computer does not list the device in the Device Manager utility.

I have disabled the Windows Firewall.

The computer with which the external drive worked and one that currently does not recognize are model computers windows XP (2008).

Thank you very much for your help.

    Thanks for the reply.

In the meantime and after reviewing all similar positions, it turns out that find the 'live' usb device does the trick.

So, other people with similar problems, try the usb cables at the back of the computer (all), then by restarting the connection there.

    It worked for me.

I already changed the boot order, but it shows the blue screen and then goes out... help me if you think you have the solution for me...

    Hello

You can not install Windows vista on a USB hard drive. The reason is that manager (Bootmgr) boot will always be on the internal hard drive and will not read the USB drive letter properly and it continues to change.
However, you can install the two HDD internally, and then you can have a dual boot option by adding the entries in startup of the operating system Windows Vista, Startup Manager (boot mgr).

  • Migration of data from Time Capsule for external hard drive

On previous posts, I received advice to use a single TC to buy a new one, with the intention to use them both as backups Time Machine for three different Mac. So right now, I have a 5th generation unique Time Capsule of my network that serves as a backup for three Macs drive. The older TC is still connected, but only until he ends the disc, which transfers to a 3 TB Western Digital My Passport Ultra HD, connected directly to the TC via USB to archiving.

The old TC is filled up to 1.99 TB, and I imagine that it would take a long period of time to archive and copy all of this info, but the process is already underway for more than 24 hours, and it always shows 1 day 0:31:59 is this normal? Do I have to cancel and try another method?

Shared experiences or advice will be appreciated.

    See you soon!

BTW, I don't like the new layout of this post!

Unfortunately, these can take a long time. I suggest that you let it run for at least 24 hours and then see where is the check-in process. So again, it doesn't show much progress later, let know us and we can provide you with possible options.

  • Is there a possibility of the virus being transferred as well for moving files on an external hard drive?

Original title: Virus/malware/spyware portable with external hard drive?

I run Windows 7 64 bit. My subscription to Norton ran a while back (I know, dumb move) and I want to use MSE instead of pay crazy to renew Norton.  Right now, I'm waiting for Microsoft to difficulty MSE Windows 7 64 bit (there is a problem of file corruption with MSE for 64-bit Windows 7 version that Microsoft is working on fixing)... In the meantime, I suspect strongly I have some viruses and spyware on my laptop and wanted to try a system reset. If I back up my files to an external hard drive will be I might transfer of virus/malware to my computer when I put files on my laptop?

    Hi Cbx_ladyarabica

    Please contact the Microsoft Community.

I like to show you a point for Microsoft Security Essentials. Want to know if there is a possibility of virus being transferred on the external hard drive and back, as well as files. It's pretty simple and I'm here to help you. Thank you for taking the time to read this far.

It is a possibility that the virus may be transferred along with the files provided that they are infected, as well. To be on the safe side, I'd like you try to run a full scan on the computer by using various third-party programs (such as suggested by Andre) to ensure that the computer is virus-free.

NOTE: The use of third-party software, including hardware drivers can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from starting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the use of third-party software can be solved. Software using third party is at your own risk.

  • Problem with Lightroom and external hard drive. Files and folders deleted.

In the classroom (8.1 windows computers) import us images that .dng files on an external hard drive using Lightroom.

After the Lightroom, insert us the memory card containing photos and attach an external hard drive. (formatted to ntfs)

We create a new catalog on the external hard drive and then create a folder as the destination for the images on the external drive as well.

After passing to the newly formed catalog in Lightroom, we import the photos from the memory card to the external hard drive.

Photos are present in the folder 'import' on the external hard drive after the end of the import, so checking with windows Explorer.

After the closure of LR and disconnect the external hard drive of the computer, it appears that the newly created files and imported files have disappeared.

We tested with an external hard drive in exfat. The same problem.

There is no problem when you copy directly in Explorer windows of memory card files to the external drive.

The files are not hidden. Tested on mac and windows.

If you said that the photo files are on the external hard drive when you checked using Windows Explorer during the class? Is this correct? YES
Then you go home and the files are not on the external hard drive? YES

Well, it is a mystery, but there is no way that Lightroom can be the culprit.

Is it the same for the catalog file, in class, he was present on the hard disk according to the Windows Explorer, and when you get home, is no longer on the drive? YES

Same conclusions, it is not Lightroom.

A self-proclaimed expert put in place a partition on my hard drive, called data(F:).)    The same "expert" told me that it is impossible to delete this partition.    The score, data(F:), reprend 18,7 Go de mon disque dur de 40 Go.)    I can't find anyway to put any data in this pjartition, but I managed transferable data he ocnatined on an external hard drive.    How can I recover the 18.7 GB restore disk Local (c)?

What happens when you try to save a file in F:\?

The problem is that even if you delete the partition using Windows, the built-in Windows for partition resizing tool is both limited and turns to the command line only (no GUI).

Start the disk management tool: start > run > diskmgmt.msc > OK

You should see something like this: http://cid-18b259158254905b.office.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/diskmgmt.jpg

Look at the detail for disc 1.  There are two partitions on disk 1, D: and E: (they are lucky to have names that indicate what they are, but this is not necessary).  There is also an area to the right of the E: partition which shows as "not available."  This means that this part of the disc is not used.  If you add the sizes of D:, E: and the space unallocated, you get 186,31 GB because it is a 200 GB HDD ('GB' to a manufacturer disk 1,000,000,000 bytes; a GB Windows is 1024 ^ ^ ^ 3 = 1 073 741 824 bytes).

If you right-click on an existing partition, you will get the context menu shown.  Click on 'Delete Partition' and it will be removed.  If this has been done to the E: partition in the screenshot, the unallocated space would increase to about 93,18 GB.

Windows has a command line tool called DiskPart, which is able to extend a partition in the unallocated on the 'right side' space (looking diskmgmt) of the existing partition.  In other words, in the screenshot, E: partition can be expanded to occupy all or part of the 42,61 Go of currently unused space.  If the E: partition is deleted, then partition d: could be extended to deal with some or all 93,18 GB unallocated space.

If, however, you have a D or E between C and F partition, DiskPart cannot extend c in the space vacated when you remove F.  But maybe D: and E: are CD players.

However, DiskPart is not easy to use and can make your computer unusable if you do the right thing.  I'm not suggesting try you it unless you have a disk image or backup to disk clone in place.

Instead, get a better disk management tool, one that can resize and move partitions autour, and who uses a graphical user interface.  The one I used isAcronis Disk Director , which is not free. Easeus Partition Master is free and looks as if it will do the job. Paragon Partition Manager also is a good commercial product and is currently on sale for less than $10.  Partition Magic used the most recommended instrument, but Symantec purchased and then abandoned it.

  • How to restore a Firefox refreshed all bookmarks to an external hard drive?

I've just 'refreshed' Firefox and lost ALL my passwords, even if the instructions said that they would be saved. I tried to copy it in the folder of old data from Firefox and it does NOTHING. I have all the data I need on an external hard drive and the ability to navigate (already found my Firefox profile on the backup drive) and to copy and paste data from this drive on my C drive. Please tell me EXACTLY how to transfer my favorites for the latest version of Firefox. I have YEARS of bookmarks that I can't AFFORD TO LOSE. I'll be more than happy to just restore my old profile even if that slow Firefox. It would be a small price to pay, but I must have bookmarks in return. Help, please!

Hi, in case bookmarks trying to open the profile folder, then find the folder called "bookmarkbackups". Use the most recent file to restore bookmarks menu favorites - all bookmarks - import and backup - restore.
