Physical running Windows 7 install as a virtual machine

Is it possible to run a Windows 7 OS installed previously as a virtual machine inside a linux host?

I don't want to convert the physical system to a virtual machine. On the contrary, I want to be able to start installing natively both run like a VM when necessary, everything that can be done on a Mac with bootcamp/Fusion.

If this is possible, what warnings are there? I have seen support articles to do this for Windows XP profiles and hardware but I don't think that would apply to Windows 7.

Thank you!

With the license of the company, Windows will ask for reactivation when you switch between the VM and the native boot?

I think that he won't complain or request you the reactivation.

VMware Workstation has a computer Assistant virtual for putting in place of an existing installation of physics?

No - you create a new Win 7 VM and specify to use a physical disk.

First boot you will most likely meet a BSOD. You post the number of BSOD here - we help.

That will have to be repeated several times and if you're lucky - or use a physical host and Intel-chipset - ultimately both variants work.

If you have no luck pilots to start in a VM setting will result in a normal start unusable...

Stupid question: why do you want to use the original installation within a virtual machine also?

It doesn't have a single advantage over simply configure a fresh Windows 7 VM.

The times where dualbooting Windows natively, so much as a virtual machine have been fun are gone forever after Vista was introduced...

I have an old Dell computer that ALLOWS you to have Windows XP Professional is installed. I have installed on it now Ubuntu (Linux) and Windows XP has disappeared. The computer came with Windows XP Professional installed when I got it. However, I still have the installation disc. My question is, would it not possible or legal to use the installation disc to install Windows XP Professional on a VM on the computer even though I still have the product key?

    Hello

This is legal, Yes, the question is: 'is possible', and depends on every time that you have a Windows XP OEM key or not, if that is the case, then you can install it, but you can activate ever, the key can be used only once by the motherboard (VM motherboard change). If its if retail is key then its no problem at all.

The sticker will tell you this. If it says or OEM and the OEM COA. otherwise its so retail in most cases.

  • How to activate the Internet connection on Windows Server 2003 is installed in the virtual machine in VMware Workstation 8?

I have Windows Server 2003 is installed on a virtual machine in VMware Workstation 8. I need it to learn and practice the use of the Active Directory. I've also set up 3 Windows XP workstations connect to it, which means that they can communicate with Server 2003. What is lacking is the Internet connection on all of them. When I run ping 8.8.8.8 in one of these virtual machines, I get, 'Destination host unreachable.'

I'm not sure, what if the problem comes from the settings in Windows or the settings of the virtual machine.

    Can someone help me?

Thank you, guys. I was finally able to put in place. It was quite an ordeal to deal with IP addresses and virtual networks. Here's how I did (in the screenshots) in case someone else needs it.

(I also confess that it is perhaps one of the ways to implement. Maybe there is an easier way to do it with DHCP...)

    1. in your computer where is installed VMware Workstation 8 begin the "Virtual Network Editor." It is located in the folder of installation of VMware Workstation. And implement the network following (VMnet2 in my case):

2 then in VMware Workstation itself in the virtual machine when Windows Server 2003 is installed set up two network as connections:

This one is for external access to the Internet:

And this one for intranet communications AD:

    3. then in the machine virtual de Windows Server 2003 set up what follows for two network adapters:

    For Internet access:

Then, you need allow this connection to share:

And then for the ad access to workstations (ensure that the static IP address is in the range specified in the virtual network over VMnet2 network editor). I've also set up DNS to 127.0.0.1 because I installed on this Windows 2003 DNS server:

    4. from the Windows 2003 VM try ping 8.8.8.8. It should work now.

    5. go to each workstation, in my case, Windows XP, each in its own virtual machine and set up the network in the VMware Workstation as follows:

    6. then in the virtual machine, configure the network connection for Windows XP workstation. Don't forget to assign a new static IP address for each workstation, which not coinside with IP of the domain (this IP address must come from the range specified in the virtual network over VMnet2 network editor):

    7. try first ping the domain, in my case ping 192.168.237.128. And then Internet, ping 8.8.8.8. The two should work!

    Continue with steps [5-7].

There is no difference running Oracle in a virtualized environment or on a box. For the performance gain, the same number of steps are necessary as normally are required. Read the guide to performance optimization of Oracle doc site corresponding to your version of db http://tahiti.oracle.com.

  • Running under Windows 98 and more on virtual machines?

    Hello

I am wandering how I would go about installing and running Windows 98 and more on a virtual machine, if that is at all possible. Also if it is possible what is the oldest that we can run on a virtual machine?

It's just for fun and I'm kind of feeling nostalgic lol. I am aware that the new and latest OS is Windows 10 I have and like you.

I am currently a student at CompTIA now and think practically I realize that the chances of ever falling on a user with Windows 98 are extremely low.

I saw a show called Winworld PC that I can have a look at. However, I also wanted to check to see if you guys have any other recommendations.

  • Run a virtual machine or vAppliance on a VMPlayer installed on a virtual machine

    http://communities.VMware.com/thread/61041

Now, after the successful installation, I'm not able to run a virtual machine on this VMPlayer, I get an error message

"You can't power on a virtual machine with in a virtual machine.

I tried to run a test applainc called My NMAP.

I will attach the vmware.log file and the vmx file.

I don't know there must be something in the vmx file to work around this problem.

VM host is a Windows 2003 VM with sufficient resources.

Any ideas how to get around this problem?

    Ah.

    ESX 3.0. * does not support monitor_control.restrict_backdoor.

    ESX 3.5. * does not support monitor_control.vt32.

ESX 4.0. * takes in charge monitor_control.restrict_backdoor, but instead of monitor_control.vt32, you must use "monitor.virtual_exec = material."

On ESX 3.*, you should still be able to execute the nested virtual machine by adding the following configuration option to the configuration file for the internal VM:

    vmx.allowNested = TRUE

  • vCenter Server 5 install in a virtual machine or not?

    Hi all.

We have a health care environment small assisted living with a dozen sites/servers

A server has 3 VMw4 vms on it.

We received two new servers ESXi installed 5. They will host several virtual machines of Windows Server for most of the migration of the current VMw4.

I want to install vCenter Server 5 to manage.

My book of VMware by Lowe, he mentions that install the vCenter server in a virtual machine has limits.

It mentions cold migration, cloning and editing material are not available.

He also mentions the considerations with the help of a distributed virtual switch.

Ufortunately that he won't go into details.

But there seems to be benefits such as the backup server and fast food when you use a virtual machine.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello

It is one of the common design decision. now VMware recommended is to use a virtual machine.

some of the benefits you can get are: -.

The vCenter Server system can be revived in a cluster of high availability of vSphere

VM resources CPU and memory can be easily resized. The vCenter Server system also benefits from vSphere Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS) cluster workload balancing.

You can easily save or create a virtual machine as needed.

him as a physical Machine will be some disadvantages such as:-

To ensure availability, you must purchase and use additional software such as vCenter Server Heartbeat or a third-party clustering solution.

You must properly size the physical machine's resources.

You must have a separate system and use imaging software to take a snapshot of a physical machine.

  • Run a remote command on a virtual machine

I have a remote application that generated virtual machines by request. After that each machine is generated and custom, I need to run a command-line on this machine (machine all have Windows OS installed) of the application itself.

Is there a way to do it through the java/vsphere API?  (The machine is running on)

    Thank you

the vSphere API does not provide capabilities to execute commands within the guestOS which is what uses the SDK for Java (VMware Tech Preview of Java SDK) and VI (Version of Steve Jin).

However, VMware has an another API that is available for the management of comments called VIX API. This API allows you to perform operations within the guest, transfer files to/from host, etc. There is even a project open source similar to that of VI Java API called Toolkit Java VIX you could look in - http://sourceforge.net/projects/vixjava/
